Significant Changes to the Wind Load Design Procedures of ASCE 7-10

Sponsored by ASCE Continuing Education and ASCEs Structural Engineering Institute (SEI)
Purpose and Background

THURSDAY, April 19, 2012 12 Noon - 1 pm Eastern Time

Benefits of Live Web Seminars:

NEW WEBINAR!

Current building codes require all buildings and structures to be designed and constructed to resist the applicable design wind loads. For the vast majority of the U.S., the design wind loads are determined in accordance with the applicable provisions of ASCE 7. This webinar will address the significant changes in the wind load design procedures of the 2010 Edition of ASCE 7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. The implications to strength design and allowable stress design resulting from the new strength design-level wind speed maps will be discussed. A new simplified procedure for Main Wind-Force Resisting System (MWFRS) and Component and Cladding loads has been added for buildings up to 160 feet high. The design of the MWFRS is now specifically covered by two Design Procedures: Directional Procedure and Envelope Procedure. A corresponding simplified method is provided for each procedure. This webinar will also address the changes to the Envelope Procedure (formerly the MWFRS provisions for low-rise buildings of Method 2 in ASCE 7-05) and discuss the causes for improper application and interpretation of this method in ASCE 7-05 and ASCE 7-02. The webinar will conclude with a discussion on the refinements to the provisions for roof overhangs, signs, rooftop structures, and the minimum design wind loads.

ASCES STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE

SEI was created in 1996 to serve the unique needs of the structural engineering community more effectively while also being their voice on broader issues that shape the entire civil engineering community. The mission of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) is to advance and serve the structural engineering profession. It has 20,000 members and strives to advance its members careers, stimulates technological advancement, and improves professional practice.

(Brief discussion)

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the changes to the wind load design procedures in ASCE 7-10, and how these changes will impact the design of buildings for wind loads. You will also learn the rationale for making the changes discussed.

Strength design-level wind speeds Risk categories and classification of buildings Load combinations Comparison of design pressures n Directional procedure Analytical Simplified

The webinars offered by ASCE are the easiest ones for me to present to groups. I appreciate how consistently organized ASCE webinars are.

Webinar Instructor

Structural engineers, architects, code officials and code consultants will benefit from this webinar.

T. Eric Stafford, P.E., is a registered professional engineer specializing in wind hazard mitigation and code development activities. He is currently President of T. Eric Stafford & Associates and serves as a building code consultant for various groups including the Institute for Business and Home Safety, the Florida Building Commission, and ASCE among others. Stafford recently partnered with ASCE Press to publish the Significant Changes to the Wind Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10 and Significant Changes to the Earthquake Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10. Mr. Stafford has also partnered with the International Code Council, Building Officials Association of Florida, and AIA Florida to publish Commentaries on the Florida Building Codes, and Commentaries on the North Carolina Building Codes. Previ-

ously, he served as Vice President/Technical Services for the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes. He has a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science (Structural emphasis) from Auburn University. Stafford is a member of the ASCE 7 Task Committee on Wind Loads, previous member of the National Hurricane Conference Planning Committee, Chairman Emeritus of the National Hurricane Conference Engineering Topic Committee, Former Staff Liaison to the SBCCI Wind Load Committee, and former Staff Liaison to the International Building Code Structural Code Development Committee. Mr. Stafford is a national lecturer on the wind provisions of the International Building Code and ASCE 7. Mr. Stafford also was Manager of Codes for the International Code Council and Director/Code Development for the Southern Building Code Congress.
