RE: AVSEC ACTIVITIES IN THE 107th CONGRESS PRE 9-11
--GAO oversight: The GAO issued one report in 2001 on aviation security prior
to 9-11 (Responses of Federal Agencies and Airports We surveyed About
Access Security Improvements (GAO-01-1069R) August 31, 2001). GAO
issued four major reports on aviation security in the year 2000.
--"The fact that there have been no major security incidents in recent years—
such as the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 101—could breed an attitude of
complacency." April 6, 2000 GAO report to Congress on Civil Aviation
Security (p. 3).
The following hearings/markups on aviation in the 1077th Congress prior to 9-
11-2001:
House: Subcommittee on Aviation , hearing on H.R. 2107, End Gridlock at Our Nation's
Critical Airports Act of 2001, 1:30 p.m., 2167 Rayburn. Testimony was heard from
Representatives Hyde, Gutierrez, Weller, Jackson of Illinois, and Davis of Illinois; from
the following officials of the State of Illinois: George H. Ryan, Governor; and John F.
Harris, 1st Deputy Commissioner, Department of Aviation , City of Chicago; and public
witnesses.
House: Subcommittee on Aviation hearing on the FAA's efforts to modernize the Air
Traffic Control system, with emphasis on the Standard Terminal Automation
Replacement System (STARS), 1:30 p.m., 2167 Rayburn. Testimony was heard from the
following officials of the Department of Transportation: Kenneth M. Mead, Inspector
General; and Steven Zaidman, Associate Administrator, Research and Acquisitions,
FAA; and public witnesses.
