MSS Underslung (2 sets in service)

MSS beam is situated under concreted bridge structure.

Maximum bridge deck width Maximum bridge span Minimum bridge clearance above the terrain 16.5m 45.0m 6.0m

MSS is used for span by span construction of continuous beams. Economically effective use is for viaducts with length of up to 250m. For MSS the great speed of the construction process is characteristic since it usually takes 11 days for completing each span. Both MSS girders are supported directly on bridge piers or on pier foundations. It makes MSS independent of geological and terrain conditions and allows for surmounting avariety of natural and man-made obstacles under thebridge. Underslung MSS is especially suitable for single beam bridge structures with either alinear or cranked bottom line. MSS superstructure consists of two steel box girders, placed under the bridge superstructure and supported by triangle brackets, fixed to both sides ofthebridge pier column. On the brackets are launching wagons with hydraulic equipment for vertical and horizontal MSS axis adjustment. Formwork for bridge beam and for side cantilevers is fixed to MSS beams and real adjustment of bridge beam geometry is realised by mechanical screw jacks. No other formwork operations are necessary before, during andafter launching MSS into the next span which speeds up the work procedures.

MSS Overhead (2 sets in service)

MSS beam is situated above concreted bridge structure.

Maximum bridge deck width Maximum bridge span Minimum bridge clearance above terrain Minimum bridge local clearance * * street clearance, other local obstacles MSS Overhead is suited especially for double beam bridge structures with either alinear or cranked bottom line. MSS superstructure consists of one steel box girder, placed above the bridge deck and supported by asteel frame, standing on the pier head and penetrating the bridge slab. Transversally to MSS girder there are steel brackets, on which the bridge formwork is suspended by thread rods. Formwork geometry is horizontally adjusted by the transverse position of the rods and vertically by their length. At the front end of MSS issuspended the prestressing platform, from which the strands are pulled into cable ducts andcables are tensioned by jacks after concrete has hardened. More than 10km of bridge structures have been built since the first set of MSS was put in operation in 2001. The most challenging was the construction of the cable stay bridge spanning the Odra River, with the main span of 105m. This project documented agreat adaptability of MSS for building structures the parameters of which donot fit basic MSS data. 14.5m 45.0m 5.5m 1.5m

Equipment for balanced cantilever method Mobile concreting carriages (MCC)

Skanska owns 1 pair of MCC used for building the first bridge across the Orava river, and 3 pairs of BB used for building by which the cable stay bridge in Povazska Bystrica. MCC is specialised equipment for building bridges by means of in situ cast segments starting symmetrically from the pier to the centre of the span where the adjacent ends of next-door cantilevers areconnected by concreting of the closing segment. MCC are adaptable for any box girder bridge with respect to data below: Type of MCC max bridge width MCC Orava 14.00m MCC Povazska Bystrica 30.40m segment length 4.80m 4.90m segment weight 180t 360t

Cantilevering is asuitable method for building bridges crossing deep valleys or rivers by long spans, where other known technologies have their limits. Skanska has become an experienced contractor building these bridges in the Czech and Slovak Republics and in Poland.

Form Traveller (FT) for concreting bridge deck on composite bridges

Type of FT Pier FT Span FT Traveller length (m) 32.4 20.4 Concreted section length (m) 19.1 31.0 16.0 16.5 Transverse distance of bridge beams (m) 6.0 9.0 6.0 9.0 Side cantilever length (m) 2.5 3.5 2.5 3.5

FT is equipment used specially for concreting the bridge deck on composite bridges of steel andconcrete type. Usually, pier sections of the deck are concreted first and, after the concrete has hardened, the central sections are completed. Therefore two types of FT are in use pier FT and span FT. They are designed for bridges with spans of up to 45m but can be modified forshorter or longer spans if needed. Two longitudinal beams are of steel truss construction while Iprofiles are used as transverse beams on which formwork panels (FW) are suspended by thread bars. After the concrete slab has hardened, formwork panels are loosened and the FT is longitudinally launched in further position by use of hydraulic cylinders. Supporting blocks with sliding bearings are welded tothe upper flange of bridge girders and protrude above the deck surface. External FW (under side cantilevers) is launched together with FT while internal FW (panels between bridge steel girders) is launched independently on rails welded to the bridge girder webs.
