DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS:

Solve the following problems: 1. A bacteria population P(t) undergoing natural growth numbers 49 at 12:00 noon. a) Suppose that there are 294 bacteria at 1:00 pm, write a formula P(t) after t hours. b) How many bacteria are there at 1:40 pm? C) At what time will there be 2000 bacteria? 2. In 1998 there were 40 million Internet users in the world and this number was then doubling every 100 days. Assuming that this rate of growth continued, how long would it be until the worlds 6 billion human beings were using the Internet? 3. The half-life of radioactive cobalt is 5.27 years. Suppose that a nuclear accident has left the level of cobalt radiation in a certain region at 100 times the level acceptable for human habitation. How long will it be until the region is again habitable? 4. A small metal ball at room temperature 20 is dropped into a large container of boiling water (100). Given that the temperature of the ball increases 2 in 2 seconds, what will be the temperature of the ball 6 seconds after immersion? How long does the ball have to remain in the boiling water for the temperature of the ball to reach 90? 5. Suppose that you discover in your attic an overdue library book on which your grandfather owed a fine of 30 cents 100 years ago. If an overdue fine grows exponentially at a 5% annual rate compounded continuously, how much would you have to pay if you returned the book today? 6. An investor has found that business is increasing in value at a rate proportional to the square root of its present value.. If the business was worth 1 million dollars two years ago and is worth 1.44 million dollars today, how much will it be worth 5 years from now? When will the business be worth 4 million dollars? 7. A 1200-gallon tank initially contains 40 lbs of salt dissolved in 600 gal of water. A solution containing lb of salt per gallon is poured into the tank at the rate of 6 gallons per minute. The mixture is continually stirred and is drained from the tank at the rate of 4 gallons per minute. a) Find the length of time needed to fill the tank. b) Find the amount of salt in the tank at any time. c) Find the amount of salt in the tank at the instant it overflows.

8. Consider a reservoir with a volume of 8 billion cubic feet and an initial pollutant concentration of 0.25%. There is a daily inflow of 500 million cu. ft. of water with a pollutant concentration of 0.05% and an equal daily outflow of the well-mixed solution in the reservoir. How long will it take to reduce the pollutant concentration in the reservoir to 0.10 %? 9. A body of mass m falls from rest in a medium for which the resistance is proportional to the square of the velocity in meters per second. If the terminal velocity is 50 m/sec, find a) the velocity after 2 seconds, and b) the time required for the velocity to become 30 m/sec. 10. A boat is being towed at the rate of 20 km/hr. At the instant (t=0) that the towing line is cast off, a man in the boat begins to row in the direction of motion exerting a force of 90 N. If the combined mass of the man and the boat is 225 kg and the resistance to motion is equal to 26.25v, where v is in m/s, find the speed of the boat after minute.
