Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

essage from the

Back-to-School Sentiments

ector
The Revd Canon Dr. Kevin George

It's hard for us to imagine that Aug is already gone and we're well into the middle of Sept. As good as it is to enjoy summer vacations, time with family, and some rest and relaxation, it is always exciting when Sept comes upon us and we all prepare for the busy Fall that lies ahead. For us, at St. Aidans Church, this time of year brings much excitement as we ramp up for the last few months of the year. Last week, I had the opportunity to spend a few moments downstairs in the atrium with the children of our parish. You could sense their excitement as they all planned for return to school, and the return to the routines of family life that go along with it. I suspect for many of us this time of year in the church is very similar to back-to-school for the kids. I hope that most of us express and feel that same sense of anticipation that our children do this time of year. Sure, there are always one or two who hang their heads and say, "Oh no, I don't want to go back to school/church But truth be told we all know that most of us have a sense of anticipation and excitement about the newness of this time of year. Our Collect Last Week Read: Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people that, richly bearing the fruit of good works, they may by you be richly rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord who is alive with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. I am praying that we may all be stirred to move, act, love, forgive, heal, embrace, and make new the community of Christ. My prayer is that as a community we will discern the many places that we can be stirred or jarred from our complacency and work with the tremendous strengths we have to make stronger the Body of Christ. I am excited about the stirrings of the Spirit at St. Aidans ~ I want to highlight a few: The Revd Anne Jaikaran will be helping us discern how we might hold up new models of ministry to seniors as we build up the Silver Saints Ministry. Already there is an excited group of volunteers who want to be the pioneers behind it. Stir up the will of Your people oh Lord, that we would richly bear good fruit. ST. Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

We were saddened to recently receive word of Trish ONeils resignation as Director of Children Youth & Family Ministries. We give thanks for the many stirrings of the Spirit in her work with us at St. Aidans. At the same time we are fortunate to have a dedicated group of Church School Teachers who help our youngest ministers get stirred up every week. We recently hired Alexandra Strong as Interim Director of Childrens Christian Education. She began in July and has already helped our Church School Teachers be stirred and excited about the important ministry in which they are engaged.

Music is such an integral part of any liturgy. We have great music at St. Aidans and great leadership in David Weaver. Our Choir begins practicing again on Sept 19th at 7:15 pm. Music is capable of jarring us out of complacent places as well. Perhaps you have been thinking of joining the choir? If you have, now may be the very time for you to come out. Once a month our church takes a Sat evening at the Out of the Cold program at St. John the Evangelist. These afternoon/evenings allow us to feed the hungry literally. Perhaps you have been thinking of ways that you might be able to become involved in a hands-on ministry that addresses the needs of our common humanity this may be it! Each organization needs good leaders. Our Parish Council is blessed with many. One of the exciting ways the Spirit is stirring our leadership group has been through the hard work of The Finance Committee under Andra ONeills direction. We are also very grateful for our Wardens and the work that they do: Doug Wilson-Hodge, Wendy Kilgour, Sandi Cole & Kara-Lee Simpson have all been very busy with the many transitions taking place. We are saddened to announce that one of our Wardens will be moving in a little over a month. Kara-Lee, along with her family, is following the Spirits call to move. We thank Kara-Lee for her hard work and dedication these past couple of years. She will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best moving forward.

There will be opportunities for Adult Christian Education this Fall. In Oct, on Wed evenings at 7:30 pm, we will be discussing a great book by Brian McLaren : Finding Our Way Again: The Return of the Ancient Practices. Please see the poster at the end of this newsletter for more details. There will be an additional book group that will take us through Advent ~ stay tuned to the Sun Bulletin for more information soon.

Beyond the aforementioned happenings and stirrings at St. Aidans, Id like to take a moment with you to reflect on the importance of taking the time to pray about how each of us can be moved from our own places of comfort to become more aware of the world around us and needs of those in our lives, communities and on a global scale. This past week, I read Diana Butler Bass book Christianity After Religion. It is a book that gives our church much to consider. Id like to share an adaptation of a prayer by Robert Raines from it:

Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

O God, make me discontented with things the way they are in the world and in my own life. Make me notice the stains when people get spilled on. Make me care about the slum child downtown, the misfit at work, people crammed into the mental hospital, the men, women and youth behind bars. Jar my complacence, expose my excuses, get me involved in the life of my city and world. Give me integrity once more, O God, as we seek to be changed and transformed, with a new understanding and awareness of our common humanity. This prayer stopped me in my tracks. The language itself is raw, honest and real. It was one of those moments when I stopped reading, took a breath and read the words again. This is a plea to God to have our eyes opened, hearts changed, excuses removed and integrity restored. We are not used to such plain and honest language in prayer. Our prayers are sometimes so gentrified that its hard to discern what plea we are making. In its origins, prayer literally meant to plead, beg or ask earnestly. What is it that we plead and beg for of our Creator? I believe that much of what we pass off as prayer is really a laundry list of what we would like God to do for us. What is more, we often dont spend much time listening for an answer when we are done with that list. If prayer is conversation with the Divine, for much of my life, I confess it has been one-way. God has listened while I blabbed on and on (No comments necessary here ~ some of us are aware that we talk a lot!) The good news is that, at least, a couple of times I have listened and those times have led to great movements of the Spirit. I need to learn to listen for the voice of the Divine more often. I believe we all do. I think that if we did, we might allow God to bring about a new awareness in us; the sort of awareness that this prayer alludes to. I believe God wants us to become aware of how others get spilled on. God cares for us so much that God wishes for us to be discontented with those things that are unjust and sinful in our lives and in the world around us. God cares for us to see the plight of the ill, the imprisoned, and those who do not fit in. But, we know that just seeing anothers need or anothers suffering is simply not enough. God wants us to act. Archbishop Desmond Tutu put it this way, If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. May we all seek to search out those areas of injustice and bring the love of Christ to bear on them. We can all be difference makers. My prayer will be that we can become aware of where we can make a difference ~ and that we find the strength and courage to act. I look forward to the rest of 2013 as we ST. Thanks for the Warm Welcome & Volunteers Needed

For me, Sept means back to school, back to work and back to church. Id first like to say I appreciate the warm welcome Ive received since starting this position. Ive had the pleasure of meeting many of you and your children. For those whom Ive not yet met, Ive discovered the power of nametags and will make your acquaintance very soon. We continue to use the Light curriculum in Church School which consists of three age groups: Bubbles (under age 5), Splash (5-8) & Xtreme (9-12). Our dedicated teachers enjoy this curriculum for its user-friendly style and the minimal amount of prep-time it takes to teach engaging, informative lessons. Speaking of teaching...the Church School is always in need of teachers. If you can sign up for one Sun a month, great! If you can sign up for more, thats great too! Just remember: Jesus Needs YOU to volunteer at Church School! In Sept, we are learning about Joseph ~ his beautiful but troublesome coat ~ and how God is always present. Coming up in Oct, we will be learning about Johns Gospel and how Jesus cares about us. Stay tuned for news about the Church Schools Fall Outreach Project! We also have some exciting events to look forward to this Fall: Apple Picking (Oct 5th ), a Waiting Tree Activity (Nov 30th ) and of course, the Christmas Pageant (Dec 22nd). These events provide excellent opportunities for us to gather, both as a church family and as individual families. Please mark your calendars so you can join us! I am really looking forward to working with and getting to know St. Aidans children and families in the coming months. Thank you again for the warm welcome!

While this event provides a needed service of very affordable goods to the community of London, it also gives our St. Aidans family a chance to work together and get to know each other in a different setting. All forms of help would be appreciated. Please consider getting involved. The proceeds of this sale go into general funds for St. Aidans; along the way we also support the Mens Mission, Womens Shelter, and other non-profit organizations hosting clothing or book sales and the local thrift stores. This event gives back in so many ways.

Sept is a time of transitions: the summer of fun and different routines yields to the familiar pattern of the regular calendar year. Children go back to school, programs start, and community events begin their Fall programming. The church is no different. As your Wardens reflect on endings and beginnings we thought it would be a great opportunity to reflect on the last few months and let you know what is emerging this Fall. Many of you will know that Trish O'Neil resigned her position as Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministry at the end of Aug. Trish's talented leadership and gifts will be greatly missed in that ministry and we thank God for her time and leadership with us. Before Trish's retirement, the Wardens and Parish Council made the decision to hire an Interim Director of Children's Christian Education. This was done to assist the Sun School teachers and coordinate all the functions of our Children's Ministry. Alexandra Strong was hired in mid-July for this purpose. Alex is a teacher, tutor and purveyor of energetic ideas related to Children's Ministry. We're thankful she has joined the Sun School leadership team and ask that you connect with her to find out more about this enlightening ministry! Despite Trish's retirement, Alex's role will remain unchanged in the near term until your Wardens and Clergy discern with Parish Council what the stipendiary ministry for Children and Youth at St Aidan's might look like. Regarding other endings and beginnings, Kara-Lee and John Simpson have announced that the Simpson family will be moving to Niagara-on-the-Lake at the end of Oct. This will have a noticeable impact on the Wardens, ACW, Sun School and so on! Kara-Lee and John have loved visiting and spending time in Niagara-on-the-Lake so it was a logical move for them and one they are very excited about! The Wardens wish to thank Kara-Lee for all she's done, especially in the last several months in support of the many ongoing projects at St. Aidans! ST. Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

On Sept 5th, your Clergy and Wardens, along with many of you, attended the Service of Deconsecration at the Church of the Hosannas. Bishop Terry Dance presided and preached to a full house, with many other clergy present, including, of course, Anne and Canon Kevin. The service felt like an emotional farewell to an old and cherished family member and was made that much more difficult by the discovery, that several days prior, there was a theft of the liturgical vessels and accoutrement from Hosannas' sacristy. The especially frustrating aspect of this is that your Wardens had ensured the locks were changed months ago to prevent this very thing from happening... Needless to say, we have changed the locks again and further secured Hosannas Church (now... building). Many of you will recall the motions passed at the Special Vestry Meeting in the spring regarding the usage of funds from the Church of the Hosannas for 1) a new sign 2) kitchen renovations and 3) to fund the Silver Saints ministry: a pastoral outreach ministry for seniors. We're pleased to report that all three items are progressing in various stages of planning or implementation: The Sign: we have engaged Davies Signs, selected through a competitive quote process, to design and build us our lawn sign. We are in the permit application stage. Once permits are secured, a memorial maple tree will have to be cut down to permit the best placement of the sign. As it turns out... there is a cherry tree close to the church that has died, so we will be re-planting the memorial tree at that location. The Parish Council has selected the colour and soon-to-be-completed new church logo which will be ready to send to the sign company for incorporation onto the illuminated and LED sign (yes... Tasteful LED messaging only!) shortly. The integration of parish families into our newly combined parish of St Aidan's has been very rewarding to see over the last six months. As we continue to transition, leadership in various roles continues to change and evolve. In order to ensure our community's spiritual and broad community needs are met, your Wardens have been mindful of the parish's health in other areas, such as financial stewardship, parish community and family life. To address the financial points, we have set up a Finance Committee, chaired by Andra O'Neill, to provide solid oversight and sound fiscal leadership as we merge parish finances and work through this integration activity. Our treasurer Brenda Fazekas has been working with Kaitlin Psotka to set up the new integrated PowerChurch program that will combine budget and actual expenses of Hosannas and St Aidan's ~ no small task, let us assure you! The result of all this will be a solid financial system from which we'll be able to generate periodic updates to the parish to assure you of our financial health and progress throughout the year. Regarding our parish community and family life... There are so many good things to report! The Rev Anne Jaikaran has begun the Silver Saints initiative, looking to commence pastoral training for those lay people interested. We also have a number of other events that will cause us to come together, share time and build our community relationships: The Fall Rummage Sale, scheduled for Sat Oct 19th; a Potluck Chili Lunch set for Sun Sept 22nd following our 10:30 am service and a Parish Dinner tentatively dated for Nov. ACW Report
Heather Mills
For many years prior to Christmas, the parish of St. Aidans gathered toys for children in the Limberlost community as an outreach project for families in need in our own neighbourhood. There has been a hiatus of this activity recently, but this year Anne Kershaw and Charlotte Southern have agreed to resume organizing this opportunity for our parish to extend generosity to local children at Christmas. This is accomplished through a "sign-up" sheet which lists the age and sex of each child and specifies a gift that he/she hopes to receive. The gift donor shops for the gift and brings it to church by a specified date; Anne and Charlotte will then deliver them to the Limberlost Association for distribution. The Limberlost and Southdale Chaplaincies are now amalgamated into the unified London Community Chaplaincy. You will be hearing more about this in early Nov! We will not be gift wrapping toiletries this year for the Cathedral at Christmas. They have a new program planned instead. However, please feel free to donate any new toiletries, at any time, by placing them in the Daily Bread donation area. Sue and Percy will take the donations to the Daily Bread on a weekly basis. This is not a Christmas activity only. We would like to thank all of you who have helped out in any way with a funeral reception this year. Your kindness has been appreciated. If you are not on a list to help out and are willing to assist, do let me know. Finally we are sad to say goodbye to Kara-Lee and family. They have been a wonderful asset to our church family. Kara -Lee has worked hard as our ACW Treasurer for many years. Thank you KaraLee for all the time that you have given us. On that note, I would love to hear from anyone in the church who would like to volunteer some time being our Treasurer starting Jan 2014. There are other positions available as well so please think about helping out the ACW Executive. Please give Katherine or myself a call. Audio Newsletter Jazz by the Bog: 12th Season!

Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

Sue & Jim Smythe

Welcome to the 12th season of Jazz by the Bog! It is truly amazing how the idea for one concert became a season of three concerts, then a regular series on the London jazz scene. St. Aidans is truly one of the best venues to hear some of the best musicians in the area...and they all love playing here! This year our theme is The Out-Of-Towners. We have ventured outside of London to bring in some amazing talent that we know you wont want to miss. Fri Oct 25th ~ 8:00 pm Michael Wood: Vibraphonist Michael comes from Stratford and spent 33 years with the Stratford Festival as well as being an instructor/lecturer of jazz at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo. He has played for the National Ballet, Toronto theatres, and toured extensively with his trio and quartet, playing at prestigious resorts, hotels and for private functions. He is also an ambassador for Yamaha Music. Fri Jan 31st ~ 8:00 pm David Priest: Jazz Pianist Were excited to welcome back David who has recently returned from the West Coast. He spent 21 years in the Vancouver area playing all kinds of venues and has relocated back to London where it all started for him. He will be joined by guitarist John Culjak and Peter Hysen on bass.

Fri Apr 25th 2014 ~ 8:00 pm Rebecca Noelle: Singer You will want to be in the hall when Rebecca comes to town. Residing in Ottawa, Rebecca started her career singing blues and rock music, but found that her real love is the smaller, more intimate venue of jazz clubs. She has performed many times at Maggies in London, the jazz club where her grandfather, John Noubarian was the house pianist. John will be joining Rebecca as she wows the audience with her amazing renditions of standards as well as original material. What better way to wind down the work week than listen to these fine artists melt your cares away? Make sure you get your tickets early and tell all your friends about the best jazz venue in town ~ no clinking glasses or noisy talkers ~ just pure enjoyment of some of the finest music on offer. Tickets are $25 each or $65 for the concert series. Your series pass will also include a voucher for a free refreshment at intermission. Tickets will be available soon through the Church House Office. We are very pleased to be able to present this amazing season to our fellow parishioners and to the jazz lovers in London and area. Jazz by the Bog has raised over $10,000 over the years for various uses in the church and we hope to continue to be able to contribute our profits for the many things on our wish list at St. Aidans! Audio Newsletter Silver Saints Ministry

Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

Revd Anne Jaikaran

I am excited to have been invited in my role as Assistant Curate to co-ordinate a new ministry for senior citizens called The Silver Saints. This ministry will be based at St Aidans but it is hoped that it will eventually expand to all of Northwest London, with the possibility of working with other denominations in the area. Priority initiatives are in two areas. The first initiative involves those parishioners no longer able to get out to attend church services and activities. To ensure that these people still feel theyre an integral part of our community, I plan to train teams of lay Eucharistic ministers to take communion to their homes on a monthly basis, while others keep in regular contact with them through either visits or phone calls. An offer will also be made for them to become an Alongsider. The Alongsiders Programme is offered by the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer specifically for shut-ins. The shut-in is given prayer resources from the AFP and is then asked to pray for St Aidans ~ the people and its various ministries ~ so whatever is taking place in the parish there will be people praying alongside. The second initiative is focused more on seniors who are more mobile; putting in place times for them to come together in a social setting and providing transportation to those who do not drive and find it difficult to reach St Aidans on their own. One initiative that is already up and running is our ministry to nursing and retirement homes. Carrying over from the ministry started by Church of the Hosannas, on the third Wed of every month a service of Eucharist is held at People Care, a long-term care facility on Oakcrossing Rd and now, since July, we also hold a service at Amica Retirement Home on Fanshawe Park Rd on the fourth Wed of each month. These services are well attended and we encourage parishioners to attend these services as the residents love to meet them. By the time this article appears, a first meeting will have already been held on Sept 15th with those whove expressed an interest in becoming involved. But if you were not able to attend that meeting and would like to learn more about Silver Saints, I can be contacted at either ajaikaran@hotmail.com or during my office hours on Thurs mornings 9:30am - 12:00pm either in person or at (519) 471-1430.

Audio Newsletter Hosannas Deconsecration Service

Autumn ~ Sept 2013 Edition

Revd Anne Jaikaran

On Thurs Sept 5th, over 70 people came together for a Service of Deconsecration at the Church of the Hosannas led by Bishop Terry Dance. At the reception afterward, someone was heard to remark that it was like a wake after a funeral and that was true in many ways. The life of the church building came to an end that night and it was sad to say good bye. But, at the same time, as also at a funeral, it was a time to celebrate resurrection. Much as we do grieve the loss of that community of faith located in Hyde Park, we also give thanks for the new life which has come from the two congregations of Hosannas and St Aidans reorganizing and becoming a fresh new entity. Many thanks to all who contributed to the service and reception in any way.

"Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God's creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth? I will, with God's help." With the passing of resolution C001 at this year's General Synod, these words were added to the baptismal covenant in the Book of Alternative Services (BAS) as the ninth question of the "covenant inquiry." Though it quotes directly from the fifth Mark of Mission (part of a framework used to describe and encourage ministry throughout the worldwide Anglican Communion), the addition to the baptismal covenant comes from a grassroots movement in the church.

"Sometimes the national church catches up with what's going on at the grassroots level, and in some ways that's what's happened with this," says the Very Rev. Louise Peters, dean of Kamloops Cathedral in the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior, and mover of the resolution. This came from families and young people and adults who were coming to receive baptism, wanted and needed something more, and were asking about our role as stewards of creation. It reflects what the church has been exploring for the last 30 to 40 years ~ the understanding that to be faithful as Christians and as God's created beings is to be co-stewards with God. "There is an enthusiasm out there [for the addition]. In casual conversations I've had with people, it's been Well, absolutely ~ that makes sense.' We've been having those conversations for quite some time." The official process of incorporating this language into the baptismal covenant began with a motion by Peters at 2010's General Synod, asking that Synod direct Faith, Worship, and Ministry (FWM) to consider the best way to include language recognizing the imperative to care for creation, and to make a recommendation to General Synod in 2013. In the interim, FWM formed a working group that considered baptismal liturgies from other churches, from other provinces in the Anglican Communion, and read them aloud to each other. "This is language that needs to be heard and spoken as well as read," says the Very Rev. Peter Wall, seconder of the 2013 resolution and dean of Niagara. In the course of this reading, the working group found that there was significant emphasis on creation care in provincial rites from around the world. This year, FWM brought a resolution to General Synod recommending an addition to the baptismal covenant based on the fifth Mark of Mission. "We had a number of different options in terms of how to look at the language," says Peters. "We felt that the Mark of Mission, adapted, was the most appropriate. It says it the most succinctly, and also connects us with the Anglican Communion. In 40 years the language will be clunky, because language changes. But for now, it's elegant, it's articulate, it names what needs to be named in terms of living out our responsibility as Christians in relationship to all of life.

Naming ~ and taking up ~ that responsibility is already a way of life in the Diocese of Niagara. "We're doing some really aggressive work in this diocese in matters environmental," says Wall. "This [addition] actually says it out loud, and requires the people who are participating in the baptismwhich is the assembled people of God in the congregation ~ to actually think about that. To even just make people think about it is a really important thing for us to do."
