capital area greenway system

The Capital Area Greenway (CAG) is a system of linear parks located along rivers, creeks and streams that provides the opportunity for recreation and connecting people to Raleighs parks and other community features. The system is currently made up of 68 miles of paved and unpaved trails and over 270 miles of protected stream corridors. The framework of the CAG system includes Walnut Creek, Crabtree Creek and their tributaries to the west of the Neuse River and Richland Creek, Harris Creek and their tributaries to the east of the Neuse River. Many of the citys major ecological features can be experienced in their natural state along these water courses. We invite you to experience this network of interconnected trails whether for recreational use, wildlife viewing, or commuting.

A Greenway is a linked linear corridor of open space that is planned, designed and managed for many purposes including conservation, recreation and connectivity. Greenways usually follow natural geographic features such as floodplains, rivers, streams and ridgelines which create opportunities to protect, preserve and link these environments including the cultural and historic features that are located on them. Greenways can also follow along utility and railroad corridors when natural corridors are unavailable to make the trail connection. Most greenways include a 10-foot wide asphalt path used for recreational activities such as hiking, biking, inline skating, jogging and strolling. These paths can also be used as a means of getting to destination points such as home, work, school, parks and shopping centers without the use of a car.
