ISHRAE National Student Design Competition 2013-14

Design of a 1.5TR Energy efficient Split Air conditioner using 5 mm inner grooved copper tubes in condenser and evaporator

For members of ISHRAE student chapters

Background In a world where resources are increasingly becoming scarce it is imperative to design systems that optimize the use of materials and energy. Conventional condensers and evaporators of air conditioners are made of coils with copper tubes and aluminum or copper fin and have been the standard in the HVAC industry for many years. Small diameter coils have better rates of heat transfer and can withstand the higher pressures required by the new generation of environmentally friendlier refrigerants. They have lower material costs because they require less refrigerant, fin, and coil materials. And they enable the design of smaller and lighter high-efficiency air conditioners and refrigerators because the evaporators and condensers coils are smaller and lighter. Copper has advantage of having greater heat exchange, better longterm durability and resistance to corrosion, lower cost of maintenance, and antimicrobial benefits. It is recyclable: Recycling copper uses only 10% of the energy needed for extraction. This energy saving leads to the conservation of valuable reserves of oil, gas or coal and reduces the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. The task assigned in this competition will test the capability of the students to apply their basic understanding of heat transfer and fluid mechanics to research, design and select material to put together an energy efficient split air conditioner.

Task
Design an Energy efficient Split Air conditioner of capacity 1.5TR for ambient temperature environments (+ 46oC) using 5 mm inner grooved copper tubes in condenser and evaporator. Refrigerant chosen can be the newer substitutes for R22 such as R290or R 32 or R410A Design should address the following: i. EER of Air conditioner 3.5 ii. Design room temperature of 25 1deg C iii. Detailed heat transfer and pressure drop calculations iv. Select suitable compressor from those available in the market v. Comparison of your design with designs of same capacity available in the market ( with 7 mm copper tube ) (Assume other suitable parameters with justifications) Guidelines Student Members of ISHRAE are eligible to participate in the competition. Team Size: 2,3 or 4 Pre-registration is mandatory by sending attached registration form to ishrae_m@vsnl.net.
