Temperance

What is really meant by temperance? Why people need the virtue of temperance? Is it a need for them to know or act with to have a virtuous life? Temperance is one of the universal or cardinal values that a person has, it can be our personal strength that protects us against the abuse of taking foods, drinking alcoholic beverages and even sexual pleasure. As we moved to this kind of virtue, we barely know that it is our responsibility as a student to know how this virtue change us as a class. A virtue that we possess, as we have a deep understanding of it. This is a big challenge for us as we go to Lower Kibalang, we challenged ourselves to control our temper at all times, our own pleasure in smoking and drinking. Some students can't take back to these some habit but it is a need in order for us to escape and to feel the essence of the whole day experience without smoking, drinking, eating too much, and quarrelling. The experience in Kibalang made us realized that there are times that we don't need to have our temper control ourselves. In some cases, for example, there are shallow things that make us angry, when children are so messy and noisy, and you are the type of a person that wanted to have privacy at all times. We felt that anger will make as a monster but that Immersion proved to us that we can be a patient person in order to have harmony in the community. Controlling those temper will not ruin our life, instead we help each other in the group to have peace in heart and mind. Also, as a group, a big challenge is taking of foods moderately. All of us are fun in eating but as we go to the Lower Kibalang District, those are the times that we need to limit ourselves. The eating of too much junk food and fast food chains made us understand that abstinence should rule to us. In the community, they eat a maximum of 3 times a day, but we never appreciated that we can eat more than that. The habit of eating fast food chain specialties and junk foods is one of our detachment to our pleasure, we deal it, with so much patience and gentleness as one way of expressing love to our selves. With those happenings in the Immersion, we can see that, we can have a life full of patience, humbleness, forgiveness, and self-regulation that will help us control our emotions, thoughts and actions. With that, God wanted to tell us that self-discipline is one of the major role in our life because disciplining one's self equals to success and happiness. Therefore, virtue of temperance is a need for us because a righteous habit of the person will govern his or her natural apetite for pleasure of the senses in accordance with the norm prescribed by reason.
