Moorabool teams have once again dominated the Central Highlands Netball League Grand Finals. The yellow and black girls took away three premierships on Saturday from the five teams they had vying for the glory. Springbank had five teams playing for the end of season trophy and shield from six grades. Bungaree had two teams with Dunnstown and Gordon fielding one side each. The day started with last years runners up Gordon 13&U taking to the court against Buninyong. Both teams didnt settle until the second quarter, making unnecessary nervous turnovers throughout. At half time Gordon was down 9 goals to 7, but made their presence felt shooting 7 goals to 3 to be up by 2 goals going into the last quarter. The crowd was on the edge of their seats in a nail biting game that could have gone either way. Fortunately for the junior Eagles they regrouped and came away with the 20 to 16 season ending victory. League B&F Runner up Jaye Dalgleish from Gordon took out the trophy for Best on Court. (More photos and report page 28) Photos Michael McLeod & Helen Tatchell Gordon 13 & Under

Millions starve while spuds rot

MOORABOOL MAYOR Pat Toohey is backing the idea of sending excess potatoes to starving developing nations, to create agricultural jobs here and stop vegetables being left to rot. The Springbank farmer said the same principle could apply to the apples, citrus, stonefruit and tomato industries which are also facing oversupplies. Theres a lot of discussion being generated in the community about quality farm produce going to waste especially when we have good seasons, he said. In Moorabool, potatoes are going to waste because there is no market. They have been grown for McCains (to make chips including McDonalds French Fries) and McCains are not taking them. Why cant we turn our potatoes into mash or potato powder for use in hungry countries? There must be opportunities to send food as foreign aid. If you send money, you dont always know where it goes, but if you send food it has to be eaten by someone. Cr Toohey said the Abbott Government had promised to look into the idea and also consider sending wool. Farmers would also get a sensible level of payment for their produce and it would be above the cost of production. It would also help to create Australian jobs. He said he would wait to see who was in the new cabinet before taking the issue further. NSW MP John Cobb is expected to become the new Agriculture Minister, while Joe Hockey is likely to become Treasurer.

Red tape cut for potato farmers

INTERSTATE QUARANTINE restrictions will be cut for Victorian potato farmers slicing through expensive red tape. As of November, farms free of the disease Potato Cyst Nematode will no longer have to pay for routine soil surveys. Since November 1994, growers have been forced to spend $2.7 million on 21,000 tests, according to State Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh. To help the industry grow, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries has worked to implement a new regulatory model that places fewer restrictions on growers while still protecting the industry from disease, he said. The Coalition has also committed to collaborative research and development to support innovation in the potato industry. Mr Walsh said about 320 Victorian businesses would now be free to trade without PCN certification into all markets except Western Australia. In 2011-12 potatoes were Victorias largest vegetable crop by weight with a gross value of $116 million. Most of Moorabools potatoes are sent to McCains Wendouree where they are used for products such as McDonalds French Fries.

kicks off at Maddingley Park on Saturday 21 September from 3.45pm. The Neighbours Place is also set to benefit from a new idea at the event this year. Usually, sand is used to weigh down the candle bags used by participants for the candlelight ceremony but this year, team members are bringing a can of food, or purchasing one at the event for a gold coin, to use to weigh down their bag. At the end of the Relay, the cans of food will be donated to the Food Bank run by The Neighbours Place in Bacchus Marsh. Pat from the Neighbours Place welcomed the idea and said that the program cannot work without the support of volunteers and local churches. We rely on donations from people in the community and also have food bins at Coles, FoodWorks, ANZ Bank and Darley IGA, where food can be dropped off, she said. Local businesses were encouraged to paint the town purple to show their support. We ran a little competition and it was great to see the support in and around the Main street of Bacchus Marsh, organiser Gilliam Loughman said. Committee continues fight with DEPI

We look forward to seeing what sort of transparent process there is around this election. However, he is not supporting a bid by locals to fight the DEPI decision to overturn the election result. Its not for us to tell DEPI how they elect their committees. We raised concerns about the fact that a democratically, publicly elected committee were set aside. If they want to go through this process and make it transparent, thats fine. Brendan Hehir was elected to the committee in the original election and is among those fighting the decision and taking it to the top. Were talking to the department head, to the State Ombudsman, the Governor, and the Minister, among a lot of other people so we see it as a longterm fight to overturn the decision. Mr Hehir said that he is not going to re-nominate in the new EOI process. To re-nominate would indicate that weve given up on fighting the overturning of the election, and thats not the case. Meanwhile, Brendans wife Jinny has started petitions around the town against DEPI having the power to overturn the result of a democratic election. However pages of the petitions have been going missing. Were not sure that theyve been stolen, but theyve disappeared, from the Hotel and the Post Office. I knew that the post office one was almost full, so I went down there thinking it was full now and that was when I realised it had gone missing. Two full pages are missing with 12 signatures per page, so its at least 24 signatures gone missing which in a small community like this, that is actually a lot, she said. The petition is also available for signing at the Blackwood Merchants, and online where it so far has 125 supporters and sends an email to three relevant DEPI staff each time it is signed. Its not about who was elected, its about democratic rights and the decision being overturned. To sign the online petition go to http://www.change. org and search for Blackwood petition.

Fallout over a Department of Environment and Primary Industries decision to overturn the election result for the Blackwood Crown Reserve Committee of Management continues. Moorabool Shire Councils Mayor Pat Toohey and CEO Rob Croxford met with DEPI staff to discuss the issue. They assured us that they are following a new Expressions of Interest process that will be fully transparent. But they didnt articulate how that would be, Mayor Toohey said. The original election saw 14 nominees for nine positions, with 59 voters however none of the incumbent members were re-elected. DEPI announced that it would overturn the election result because of the high number of voters and EOIs for the committee positions close this Friday 20 September. I certainly encourage any members of the community to put in an EOI, now that DEPI have determined that thats their preferred method of candidacy for this committee.

Foul smell returns

Long Forest residents are again battling a noxious smell in the area that they are attributing to Victoria Wool Processors. Following investigations last year, the company was forced to remove waste from the wool scouring process that had been dumped on the Long Forest property. But the Long Forest Residents Group says that offensive odours are continuing and now Moorabool Shire Council is investigating. A senior officer from councils environmental health unit attended a community meeting on Monday 9 September regarding the issue, and has been actively collecting evidence. Council is investigating the situation and will provide advice to councillors and the community shortly in relation to what the product is and what action will be taken, said Council CEO Rob Croxford.

You can see what happened and how they did it, but its not clear enough to see who it was they were in full stretch throwing the bottle through the window. It looks like a young guy, but he had a hoodie on. The damage is estimated at $200. Lauren said that the couple has no problems with anyone within the community and no idea who could have thrown the bottle. It seems very deliberate, very personal. The attack was made even more brazen by the fact that Lauren and Darren live directly behind the shop,

Town crier deafens judges

MOVE OVER METALLICA, here comes the Moorabool Town Crier. Gavin Barker has taken out a national award for the loudest cry at the 23rd Australian Town Crying Championships in Alice Springs. The loveable loudmouth has lived up to his surname belting out a 93dB cry thats about the volume of a jackhammer at 15m or a smidge softer than headbanging in a heavy metal moshpit. Its definitely at the level where sustained exposure could lead to hearing loss. So what is Barkers secret? No secret but a little bit of red wine helps, he said. Im soft compared to some of the others Ive met in the past. One crier I know was recorded at 115 dB. The August 22-25 titles were organised by the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers and hosted by Alice Springs Town Council. Events were held in full costume in the central Australian heat. One event was a rendition

Dear Editor, Several regional media outlets have recently reported on community concerns regarding use of the methamphetamine Ice in country communities, including several in western Victoria. These reports quoted former addicts, family members, and police and described the devastating effects on young people within our regional towns. The Victorian Coalition Government is broadening the fight against the growing use of Ice in the community with a new package of targeted initiatives. Through this new package the Coalition Government is investing more than $1.1 million in prevention, education and treatment initiatives targeting key groups in the Victorian community. Through these new initiatives we are improving knowledge about the prevalence and impact of ice, educating key groups about its devastating effects and training our police and paramedics to effectively respond. The education campaign, the expansion of counsel-

ling and the training of staff will be provided right across the state. An inquiry into the supply and use of methamphetamines, particularly ice, in Victoria has been referred to the Law Reform, Drugs and Crime Prevention committee of Parliament for consideration. I would urge people with views on this matter, and agencies providing assistance to ice users within your area to make submissions to the inquiry. David OBrien, Member for Western Victoria Dear Editor, NBN=No Bloody Network. I had to have a laugh at this headline in The Moorabool News 10, September 2013. Although I sympathise with Mr Corey Gathercole, (I also run a small business heavily reliant on phone and internet access), I am sure his situation is an isolated case in the roll-out in Bacchus Marsh and the petulant ravings that the NBN is junk, going to attack cabling with a demolition saw, and that others in his area are having second thoughts seems a bit over the top.

The statement that the NBN will not support Fax Machines is false; there are solutions for their support along with eftpos machines. The only technology that will not work are old decadic devices, for example rotary dial phones that use pulse dialling, I am sure there are not too many of them in use now. Mr Gathercole must have a path to compensation available as anyone would have due to third party failure to provide service as promised and in a timely manner. The NBN involves new technologies, there are bound to be teething problems, but the complete negativity of this report is not befitting to what is the biggest infrastructure build in Australia since the Snowy Mountains Scheme. What would be useful to all is a survey performed by The Moorabool News canvassing those that are already connected to the NBN and for them to relate their experiences good and bad. I am yet to be connected but roll-out is getting closer, I cannot wait for my connection day. Stephen Smitham Darley

Baby girl Amariah Jewel was welcomed to the world on Thursday 12 September by her parents Melissa and Petara TANUVASA of Hillside. Amariah weighed 3.49 kgs.

By Kate Taylor Local landcarer Anthony Dufty has won an award at the 2013 Victorian Landcarers Awards. Mr Dufty picked up the Heather Mitchell Memorial Fellowship Award at a ceremony held at Government House last month. The Pentland Hills Landcare Group, of which Mr Dufty is a member, won the Qantas Landcare Innovative Community Group Award a national award. The Group won for their efforts with the Myrniong and Korkuperrimul Biolink. What a whopper!
PITY THE POOR chook that laid this egg. The 102g whopper was found in a Ballan henhouse last Tuesday and was almost twice the weight of the regular-sized 55g egg found in the same nest. The owner has two 10-month old chickens Happy and Henny and it is unclear which one laid the giant egg. They dont eat any particular diet, but we do feed them scraps kindly left out at Ballan Kindergarten and also sometimes at the childcare centre, the owner said. Not sure why this one was so big and its definitely a chicken egg. As far as we know, there are no stray geese, ostriches or dinosaurs roaming the backyards of Ballan. The egg falls far short of the worlds biggest a 180g egg laid in China. A 160g example has also been recorded in Perth.

Ellysa and Alyxander of West Melton welcomed baby Ruby Jayne BANITSIOTIS on Tuesday 10 September. Ruby weighed 7lbs12oz

sent the awards. It is a great honour to take part in this important event and to be able to acknowledge the outstanding work of the individuals, groups, networks and organisations that have made significant contributions to the sustainable care of their local environments. Without the enduring commitment and efforts of volunteers, Landcare would not exist today, nor would so many of the wonderful natural resources we boast in Victoria, Mr Smith said. The Pentland Hills Landcare Group will represent Victoria in its category at the 2014 National Landcare Awards.

Do renters impact on your homes price growth?

3 1 2

110 Gisborne Road, Bacchus Marsh

Situated only a short stroll from Main C.B.D is this lovely presented 3 bedroom home consisting of kitchen/dining, formal living, rumpus, bathroom, ducted heating, wood heater, split system, top quality fittings & fixtures, and appliances and much more only an inspection will reveal. Externally we have double garage (remote), perfectly manicured gardens, alfresco area, all set on a generous block of land at $315,000 make it yours. PID 671620.

Have you ever wondered whether living in a neighbourhood with a high number of renters lowers your homes potential for capital growth? If you have, then you are not alone as this is a common question asked to REIV members from concerned home owners. REIV research of this relationship shows that this is not necessarily the case and could actually be the opposite. Having a higher number of renters in your neighbourhood may even improve your homes potential for capital growth as it becomes a more appealing area for investors, not just owner-occupiers. This is the case for both metropolitan and regional suburbs. In the regional suburbs, where less than 30 per cent of households were renting, the median house price grew by 17 per cent over the past five years. In suburbs where over 30 per cent of households were renting, the median house price grew by 27 per cent. Take for example the suburb of Kennington in Bendigo. According to the 2011 Census, Kennington had a

high share of renters with 36 per cent of households renting. The median house price in Kennington increased by 46 per cent from $218,500 in June quarter 2008 to $320,000 in June quarter 2013. Leopold in the Bellarine Peninsula, on the other hand, had a lower share of renters comprising 14 per cent of households in 2011. Over the past five years, the median house price in Leopold increased at a slower rate of seven per cent from $310,250 in June quarter 2008 to $333,000 in June quarter 2013. The impact on unit price growth is not as clear. It is also worth noting that there are, of course, some exceptions where house price growth has been substantial, even though the share of rental households is relatively low. This serves as a reminder that there are a myriad of factors that could impact on your homes potential for capital growth, but having a high number of renters in your neighbourhood is not likely to have a negative impact on this.

Stars & Puzzles

You and the other person in your life may not see eye to eye on a key issue and this may be the week to clear the air. Actually, it can be a most positive time if you just face the facts and the music. VIRGOAugust 23-September 22 You get a glimpse into some of the next twelve months upcoming big events during this preview week. Your psychic powers are strong, but logic is nearly non existent - especially during the weekend. LIBRASeptember 23-October 22 The good and/or bad news is that you are asked to revise and expand on recent efforts. Fun and games and hearty eating figure into the weekend plans. Children bring good cheer through the week. SCORPIOOctober 23-November 21 Schedules are rearranged, meaning additional pressure. Try delegating more of the workload. If travelling or making plans for a trip, be sure your information is up to the moment. SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 22 Thursday - Friday finds you involved in a debate. Try to keep it on an intellectual plane. Some of your best ideas are inspired by youngsters. A recent financial setback is reversed. CAPRICORNDecember 23-January 20 Continue to develop plans despite a recent setback. Your ideas are sparkling right now. Clear up a weekend misunderstanding promptly. Consider launching a new athletic or fitness programme. AQUARIUSJanuary 21-February 19 Be alert to a financial opportunity in the domestic environment. Work tensions ease and an important relationship perks up noticeably. Your will power is low. PISCESFebruary 20-March 20 An alert Pisces can make a real coup. Stepping in at the right moment, someone drops out of a competition or declines an offer. Go after unanswered communications and especially unpaid debts. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are gregarious by nature and often impossible to tie down. Your most controversial feature is your gift of the gab. Education and partnerships are accented. If planning a return to school or go for higher education - this is the time.

QUICK PUZZLE

ARIESMarch 21-April 20 You are easily worked up over issues. Any cause you back now, you do so with passion. Domestic disputes can be settled with creative thinking. Romance beckons by the end of the week. TAURUSApril 21-May 22 You advance three steps toward an important goal, thanks to your rich abundance of charm. But watch that stubborn streak on Wednesday, Thursday. If not careful, you could move back two paces - at least. GEMINIMay 23-June 21 The expression method in his/her madness takes on a special meaning as you observe work habits of an employer or older relative. A favourite theory could be smashed - but you can come up with even more innovative solutions.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The cross country season is over for another year. Last weekend the club celebrated the athletes achievements with presentation of awards. Senior champion awards went to Evana Miesen and Lucas Shugg, and Junior champion awards to Taylor Farrugia and Isaac Nixon. Encouragement awards went to Zane Rich and Annabel Tarantino in the Junior age groups, and Max Closter and Caitlin Spargo in the senior age groups. The centre has had a successful cross country season with 104 athletes competing. Highlights of the season included winning the Benalla Open Day Trophy for the 9th year in a row and several gold and silver medals at the State Cross Country championships. The centre is gearing up for the start of the track and field season on Saturday 5th October. Registration sessions are being held at Ballan Primary School at 2.30pm on Friday 20th September and in Bacchus Marsh (Masons Lane Club Rooms) at 5.30pm on Friday 20th and 10.00am on Saturday 21st September.

Pentland Calisthenics
The Intermediates team completed the second part of their State Titles, coming away with a 3rd place in both aesthetics and revue. The Junior team competed at Barwon and consistency was the name of the game. Rewarded with HMs in all items except revue, where they took first place. The clubs Masters team competed at their State Titles with fantastic results: 2nd place in March, Clubs, Free Exercise & Aesthetics. 3rd place in Rods & Revue. For most of these ladies its only the fifth competition they have competed in and to come away with the Reserve Aggregate is a huge achievement. Their coach Jodie Lightowler said they are a team of truly amazing women and what they have achieved, and are working to achieve, is inspiring.

(L-R) Junior Champion Boy Isaac Nixon, Senior Champion Boy Lucas Shugg, Senior Champion Girl Evana Miesen, Junior Champion Girl Taylor Farrugia.

in a rate of 1-57.3. Metromint bred and trained by Leigh at the Murphy stable, was given a sweet passage trailing the pacemaker Aqua Luvvy (gate three) after leading out from the pole. Using the sprint lane, Metromint sailed away in the home running to register a 3.4 metre victory in a slick 1-54.3 from Aqua Luvvy and the hot favourite Nimble Jack which raced in the open. It was Metromints 4th success in 21 outings.

Ballans Anna Farrell has something very special in home bred 6-Y-0 Sundon/ Emily Eden mare Josephine Jones who brought up a hattrick of wins by taking out the $15,000 Xmas Parties @ Tabcorp Park Trotters Mobile for TM0 class over 2240 metres at TP Melton on Friday September 13. Assessed as a low grade T2 class which running in metropolitan company is unheard of, Josephine Jones had a lot against her and after starting from the extreme draw, settled at the tail of the field with the heavily supported Michael Thomas finding the lead. Setting off three wide uncovered racing for the bell, Josephine Jones making only her 5th race appearance, outstayed her rivals, scoring with authority by 5 metres in advance of Abbotshall which followed her home, with Michael Thomas a further 2.5 metres away in third place. Raced by the Farrell family, Josephine Jones, trained and driven by Anna, returned a mile rate of 2-00.6 and has a huge future ahead of her.

Coimadai duo Adam Kelly (trainer) and Gavin Lang (driver) were successful with 6-Y-0 Kiwi bred McArdle/Another Sheila gelding Eliminator in the $20,000 Battle Of The Claimers Final over 1720 metres at Melton. Moving from mid-field to park outside the leader Friday Lunch at the bell, Eliminator proved too strong over the concluding stages for Pacific Soul along the sprint lane after trailing the weakening pacemaker, with Pete Of Pan third off a three wide trail last lap on the back of Thirsty Mach a stablemate of the winner. The mile rate 1-55.4.

The 15&U Springbank Tigers played Skipton in another thriller. The girls were runners up in 2012 and were keen to make amends. They trailed at each quarter in the first half with the game set for a showdown in the last with only one goal separating the teams to the Tigers advantage. Scores were locked at 23 all and it was a certain the match would go into extra time, before Maggie Quinlan shot the victory goal right on the final whistle, under extreme pressure. Bungaree 17&U had a convincing win over Springbank in their fourth premiership win in a row. It wasnt until the third quarter that the Demons took charge over Springbank shooting 8 goals to 4 and then 11 to 3 in the last. League B&F winner Kathryn ODwyer received the Best on Court trophy for her efforts. The C Grade Springbank team couldnt shake a determined Hepburn in their match, going down 29 to 18. The B grade Tigers were

runners up last year and turned the tables on Saturday for the clubs first ever championship in that grade. They beat Bungaree 34 to 27 with Best on Court going to Kelly Howard, also the Leagues B&F in 2013. The clash of the titans was scheduled for the A Grade match with Dunnstown taking on last years winners Springbank. Both sides fought gallantly until the end, despite a heavy shower of rain, with the Springbank team claiming back-to-back wins with a one point victory 34 to 33. Moorabool could only manage one team in the football finals this year, which saw Bungaree Reserves lose to Waubra by 20 points. It was neck and neck until half time, when Waubra kicked 4 goals 2 points to Bungarees 2 goals 3 points in the third, a lead the Demons couldnt get back. Both teams kicked only two goals in the last, with the damage done to Bungaree in the third for Waubra to take the premiership.
