The Arithmetic Mean:

The arithmetic mean of a statistical data is defined as the quotient of the sum of all the
values of the variable by the total number of items. It is denoted by A.M.

For an individual series
(a) A.M. =
n
x

(b) A.M. = A +
n

, where d = x A, A is the assumed mean
For a frequency distribution,
(a) A.M =

Median is defined as the middle most or the central value of the variables in a set of
observations, when the observations are arranged either in ascending or in descending order
of their magnitudes. It divides the arranged series in two equal parts. Median is a position
average, whereas, the arithmetic mean is the calculated average. When a series consists of an
even number of terms, median is the arithmetic mean of the two central items. It is generally
denoted by M.

L = lower limit of the class in which the median lies
n = total number of frequencies, i.e., n = f.
f = frequency of the class in which the median lies
C = cumulative frequency of the class preceding the median class
i = width of the class-interval of the class in which the median lies.

Direct method:

In case of individual series, the standard deviation can be obtained by the formula.

where d = x - x and x = value of the variable or observation, x = arithmetic mean, n = total

Short-cut Method:
This method is applied to calculate Standard deviation, when the mean of the data comes
out to be a fraction. In that case it is very difficult and tedious to find the deviations of all
observations from the mean by the earlier method. The formula used is

Q.62 The mean and variance of 7 observations are 8 are 16 respectively. If
5 of the observations are 2, 4, 10,12,14. find the remaining two
observations.
Q.63 The mean and S.D. of observations are 8 and 4 respectively. If each
observation is multiplied by 3, find the new mean and new standard
deviation of the resulting observations.
Q.64
For a group of 200 candidates the mean and S.D. where found to be 40
and 15 respectively. Later on it was found that the score 43 was misread
as 34. Find the correct mean and correct S.D.
Q.65 The scores of a batsman in ten innings are 38,70,48,34,42 ,55,63,46,54,40. Find the
mean deviation about the mean. Also find its co-efficient.

the mean and variance as 45 and 16 respectively. Find the correct
mean and the variance.
Q.71
The mean and standard deviation of 20 observations are found to be 10 and 2
