Textbook: Mechanics of Materials; F.P. Beer, E.R. Johnston, Jr., J.T. Dewolf and D. F. Mazurek, 5th edition in SI units, McGraw-Hill. (Other editions of this text are suitable for theory, but chapter and section numbers may differ and the problems are different)

Attributes to be taught: The students will develop the following attributes in this course: problem analysis, design, individual and team work, and life-long learning. These attributes will be taught in the lectures through explanation of the concepts and examples. They will practice through a set of suggested problems in the tutorials and exercises in the laboratory. These attributes will be evaluated through the mid-term and final examinations, laboratory reports and five assignments. Objectives: This course should lead to a sound understanding of the BASIC CONCEPTS and PRINCIPLES used in the study of Mechanics of Materials, and of the way these principles are employed in the analysis of engineering problems. The ability of the students to understand and to apply the concepts involved in this field will be developed and it will be enhanced through adequate training in the solution of representative problems. This is one of the first courses in design dealing with design and analysis of simple mechanical and structural elements and beams. The fundamentals learned in this course are essential in all future Engineering design courses. Assignment, course tests and examinations will assess mainly the students' understanding of the theory and their skill in solving simple problems. The students must however develop a feel for reasonable answer and interpretation of results. Development of self study skills is also an intregal part of the course. The students are required to study the lab manual and relevant sections in the text as a preperation for the lab and report writing. Grading and Exams: Course Grading: Lab and Reports Assignments (5) Test # 1 (Closed Book ) Test # 2 (Closed Book ) Final Exam 15.0% 10.0% 10.0% 15.0% 50.0% (Manual to be printed from Moodle Site ) ( 2% of total grade per assignment) (22-MAY - Wednesday) (3-JUNE - Monday) (Closed Book)

Formulas and table of material properties and cross-sections will be provided if required for midterm test and final exam. Only non programmable calculator can be used for tests and exam.

Notes: A list of recommended problems for each topic is included in the above table. Students must do these problems as a minimum for which help will be provided during tutorials. To benefit from the tutorials, students must attempt the problems in advance. There will be five assignments in this course which must be handed in on the due date at the beginning of the tutorial. Late assignments will not be accepted. Makers for this course must pick up the assigments at the start of the tutorial. The two Mid-term tests (Test 1 -10% and Test 2 15% of the total grade) are mandatory. There will be NO make-up test. You will get zero mark for each Mid-term test, which you miss without a valid reason. Should you miss the test with a valid reason; the portion of mark for that test will be assigned to the Final exam portion. For example, if you miss Test 1, the Final exam mark will have a maximum 60% of the total grade. The two Mid-term tests will expose students to the exam format and level of difficulty of the questions they are going to face in the final. The schedule for the lab will be posted in the course website and in front of the laboratory: H-927. The student must be present during the lab and participate in the experiment and data collection to get credit for the lab. Students must go over the laboratory manual prior to the laboratory, and follow the instructions given for the lab and the reports. Lab Manual is posted on the course website. Repeating students must attend labs and submit new lab reports (previous lab marks will not be counted). It is mandatory to do all 6 labs and obtain a minimum of 9/15 in order to pass the course. The final examination (closed book) will be held during the University examination period. Course related formulas and material properties will be provided during the final examination.
GRADE IN FINAL EXAM MUST BE > 50% IN ORDER TO PASS THIS COURSE. ONLY FACULTY APPROVED CALCULATORS ARE PERMITTED IN THE EXAMS
