Because we are positioned within a school of public health and a school of medicine, we can provide students with a broader range of faculty expertise and instruction and greater opportunities for critical, ground-breaking and innovative research. Our goal is to advance nutritional solutions to problems in public health and educate the next generation of leaders in nutrition. The department offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral degree programs, as well as training to support certification as a registered dietitian (RD). Current research includes the role of nutrition in cancer prevention, inflammation of white blood cells and the relation to obesity and cancer, and how different foods affect the way the brain functions as we age. The department supports a student group, the Nutrition Coalition, whose activities are open to all students and dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles on both the UNC campus and in the surrounding community through volunteer, social and educational activities.

Tar Heels Travel Together! The Dept. of Public Safety encourages UNC students and employees to use alternatives to driving alone (take transit, carpool, vanpool, bike or walk). Fewer cars make the campus safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Also, theres safety in numbers. When more people bike and walk together, theyre less likely to be hit by motorists. Ridesharing and taking the bus are other great ways that tar heels stick together. Free ride-matching is provided through Zimride.UNC.edu and UNC.ShareTheRideNC.org. Also, Chapel Hill Transit and Point-to-Point (P2P) Express is fare-free! The Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) rewards employees and off-campus students who choose to give up their on-campus parking permits and use alternatives to commute. CAP members get discounts at local restaurants and shops, as well as entries into prize drawings. In addition, CAP members can join UNCs car-sharing program, Zipcar, for just $10/ year. Employees and students who commute from outside of Chapel Hill can choose to get $20/month for vanpooling, or a free GoPass to ride Triangle Transit from Durham, Raleigh and surrounding areas.
