Existing and new diesel engines can be retrofitted to run on dual fuel natural gas and diesel with the ability to operate on 100% diesel fuel if natural gas is interrupted. The system is used to lower exhaust emissions, extend diesel fuel tank run-time, reduce fuel expenses and prolong engine life and maintenance. Applications: Peak shaving, prime power, co-generation, distributed generation diesel powered electric generators. Sources of gas can be from offshore platforms, landfills, digester or other sources of methane gas. Technology: Caterpillars dual fuel system is based on a fumigation principle first observed by Mr. Rudolph Diesel, the inventor of the Diesel engine. Natural gas enters the engine with normal combustion air through the air filter, before the turbo charger. A significantly reduced amount of diesel fuel continues into the engine, which serves as a pilot ignition source for the natural gas. Our patented eNRGy Pac Controls maintains the proper balance of natural gas, diesel and air to meet the engines BTU power requirements. Applications using controls for dual-fuel fumigation technologies are subject to U.S. patent # 6,003,478, with foreign patents pending. Results: The Caterpillars fumigation system does not add spark plugs or change other specifications within the engine, so factory warranties remain in effect. Engines maintain full rated horsepower at factory recommended operating temperatures. Emissions such as NOx can be lowered by as much as 60%. Oil changes can be extended approximately 3 times normal. Black exhaust smoke (particulates) can become clear. Clean Air: Natural gas utility companies and agencies promoting clean environments, support the use of natural gas in place of diesel fuel. General Technical Information Natural gas pressure at the engine shall be 1-5 psi. Fuel consumptions are based on the fact that 140 standard cubic feet (scf) of pipeline natural gas contains the same BTU energy as one US gallon of #2 Diesel fuel. On average, one gallon of diesel fuel is 130,000 BTU and one SCF of natural gas is 930 BTU. For metric, one US gallon of #2 diesel is 3.8 liters. One liter of #2 is one CM of gas and 140 SCF of natural gas is 3.956 CM. Example: If an engine is reduced to 30% diesel fuel and 70% natural gas and normally burns 100 gph of diesel, dual-fuel consumption becomes- 30 gph of diesel, 9,800 scf of gas (70 x 140= 9,800).

The scrolling screen is used to control and set the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Trough a variety of screens the user can view any of the control settings. Following the easy to use menu screens a user can verify the following: Gas pressure settings versus the actual real time gas pressure in PSI Oil pressure settings versus the actual real time oil pressure in PSI Maximum water temperature allowed versus the actual real time water temperature Maximum exhaust temperature versus the actual real time exhaust temperature Current kW load on generator Percentage of the valve opening for gas versus diesel fuel Total operating hours for the dual-fuel system

The panel screens are also used in cases where the PLC registers an engine/dual-fuel fault. For example, if the water temperature exceeds the maximum allowable setting the dual-fuel system would be shut off (not the engine). The operator will then be guided to the water temperature screen for verification, possible correction and restarting of the dual-fuel system. Depicted is one of our most basic panels for dual-control. The patented controls are designed to meet the specific requirements for each project by offering basic mechanical systems to complete electronic control and monitoring technologies. The above screen is one of over 25 custom screens used in the eNRGy Pac Ten system. The software permits remote control, monitoring, remote adjustment, event logging of all functions, alarm annunciation, temperature pre-sets, air & oil filter status, fuel ratios and more.

Pac Ten is PLC or MS Windows driven and is designed for applications where life safety or substantial financial loss is a major issue.

This 800 kW #3508 Caterpillar is used daily in eastern New York to reduce a clients utility electric power rates. The normal load range is 670 kW at 13,200 volts. The control package is a Pac Ten with an approximate 60/40% gas-to-diesel substitution ratio. As with all our dual fuel systems, if gas is lost the engine can continue on 100% diesel fuel until gas pressure is restored.

Four 2-meg Caterpillar 3516 engines provide emergency power and peak shaving capabilities to a Roche Pharmaceuticals manufacturing facility. Each engine is equipped with an eNRGy Pac Ten dual fuel control system to provide complete remote monitoring and control for the system. Y2K prompted the initial conversion to gain more run time from existing diesel fuel tanks. Lowered emissions, reduced maintenance and extended engine life were also positive factors.
