Q 1: Define the following fluid properties with units and dimensions: Density, weight density, specific gravity, dynamic viscosity, kinematic viscosity, compressibility, capillarity and surface tension. Q 2: Prove that bulk modulus for a perfect gas undergoing isothermal compression is times of that in isentropic process. Q 3: State Newtons law of viscosity. Define Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid. Explain Rheology of fluids. Q 4:Through a very narrow gap a thin plate is pulled at a velocity v on one side of plate there is oil of viscosity 1 and on the other side oil viscosity 2.Calculate the position of the plate so that (i)The Shear force on the two side of the plate is equal (ii) The pull required to drag the plate is minimum. Q 5: The velocity distribution over a plate is given by u= 0.67 y- y2 in which the velocity in m/s at a distance of y m above the plate. Determine the shear stress at y= 0, 0.1 and 0.2 m. Take =6 poise. Ans: 0.4 N/m2, 0.028 N/m2, 0.159 N/m2 Q 6: An oil film of thickness 1.5 mm is used for lubrication between a square plate of size 0.9 m x0.9m and an inclined plane having an angle of inclination 20. .The Weight of the square is 392.4 N and it slides down the plane with a uniform velocity of 0.2 m/s. Find the dynamic viscosity of the oil. Ans: 12.42 poise Q 7: A square plate of size of 1 m x 1 m and weighing 350 N slides down an inclined plane with a uniform velocity of 1.5 m/s. The inclined plane is laid on a slope of 5 vertical to 12 horizontal and has an oil film of 1 mm thickness. Calculate the dynamic viscosity of oil. Ans: 0.897 poise Q 8: A 400 mm diameter shaft is rotating at 200rpm in a bearing of length 120 mm. If the thickness of oil film is 1.5 mm and the dynamic viscosity of the oil is 0.07 poise, determine; (a) Torque required overcome friction in bearing; (b) Power utilization in overcoming viscous resistance. Ans: (a) 58.97 Nm (b) 1.234 KW Q 9: The velocity profile in laminar flow through a round pipe is expressed as u = 2 U (1-r2/ro2) Where U is the average velocity, r is the radial distance from the centre line of the pipe, and ro is the pipe radius. Draw the dimensionless shear stress profile /o against r/ro where o is the wall shear stress. Find the value of o, when fuel oil having an absolute viscosity 4 x 10-2 N-s/m2 flows with an average velocity of 4m/s in a pipe of diameter 150 mm. Ans: o=8.533 N/m2 Q 10: A U tube is made up of two capillaries of diameters 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm respectively. The U tube is kept vertically and partially filled with water of surface tension 0.0075 kg/m and zero contact angles. Calculate the difference in the level of the menisci caused by the capillarity. Ans: 10 mm Q 11: The surface tension of water in contact with air is given as 0.0725 N/m .The pressure outside the droplet of water of diameter 0.02 mm is atmospheric 10.32 N/cm2. Calculate the pressure within the droplet of water. Ans: 11.77N/cm2 Q 12: Two discs of 250 mm diameter are placed 1.5 mm apart is filled with an oil. Power of 500 W is required to rotate the upper disc at 500 rpm while keeping the lower one stationary. Determine the viscosity of the oil. [ 0. 71 kg/ms]
