TheTarascanshadbeencorrectinassumingthattheywouldneedtodefendthemselves againsttheAztec.Bothempireswereundergoingexpansionduringthe15thcentury,anditwas inevitablethattheywouldconfrontoneanothersoonerorlater.DuringthereignoftheAztecking Axayacatl(14691481),theAztecarmiestriedonseveraloccasionstoconquertheTarascans, andwererepelledeachtime,oftenwithgreatlossoflife(Coe1994:171).Eveninthedecades immediatelyprecedingtheConquest,theAztecsstillmountedoccasionalattacksagainstthe Tarascanseasternfrontierandweresenthomeindefeat(Warren1985:xi).Gorensteinand PollarddiscussthedifferencesbetweenTarascanandAztecmilitaryorganization,withsome intriguingimplicationsaboutwhytheTarascanswereinevitablyabletoholdtheirownagainstthe armiesofalargerandmorepowerfulempire: AmongtheTarascanstherewereprofessionalsoldierswhowereoccupiedfulltimewiththe militaryandwereconsideredmembersofgovernmentThemilitaryasanarmofthe governmentwasemployedtocarryoutthedirectivesoftheadministration,whichwastoextend administrationandtherebyBasinpoliticalcontrolintotheterritory.
