Upright drilling machine comes under the category of drilling machines.

This machine is designed to work on medium size work pieces. It is very similar to sensitive drilling machine which is used for small size work pieces. In both drilling machines, we have vertical column mounted on the base. Practically upright drilling machine is used to drill holes in the brass, aluminum, steel, wood, plastic and in other engineering materials. Other than drilling operations, there are some other operations that we can perform on this machine like reaming, countersinking and boring.

In this drilling machine, we can apply power feed arrangement and by this arrangement power is delivered to spindle through gear box. There are two types of upright drilling machines

Round column section Box column section

Round column section type This machine has round column which rises from base and ends to floor. This drilling machine has a drill head assembly and round table assembly. There are three adjustments to work piece position under spindle in arm and table. Both arm and table can move up and down on the column according to operator will. This up and down movement is used to manage different heights of work piece. But we can also move them in arc up to

semi circle and this is due to the clamping of work piece at any position. This type of machine cannot drill holes for more than 50 mm. Box column section type This type of machine has square table fitted box column section on slides at the front face. In this machine, heavy box column provides strength and rigidity to machine. Moreover the table can change its position by elevating screw. By using this screw, machine gets extra support. Due to these special features, this machine can even work with heavier pieces and can do holes more than 50 mm. Parts in upright drilling machines There are some common parts in the drilling machine which are following

Base Column Table Head Spindle, quill and drill head assembly Spindle drive and feed mechanism

Base It is a part on which drill column is mounted. Generally base has circular cross section if we see from the top. Base also has T-slots which is used to provide ease for holding large piece of machining. Column This is the most important part of the machine and works to support and to hold devices. It is used to give support to table as well as to all other feed mechanism. Since the column has important applications so it needs to be rigid enough to sustain all force produced during working. Table This is the part on which we mount the work piece. It is placed at fix position with the help of column. There are two types of table geometry rectangular and circular. On the table, slots are provided to hold work piece effectively. Table can do three types of movements vertical adjustment, radial adjustment around column and circular adjustment across own axis. Head It is a part on which all feed mechanism holds and it also drives spindle. Like table, drill head is also mounted on the column. Spindle and drill head assembly Spindle is used to hold drill and behaves as linking pin whose sole purpose is to give energy from top shaft to tool by using bevel gears. We use sliding key to connect bevel gear and spindle. The non-rotating sleeve which surrounds spindle is called quill. Spindle drive mechanism In upright drilling machine, we get multiple speeds due to only one reason and this reason is the spindle drive mechanism. There are three types step cone pulley drive, step cone pulley drive along with one or

more back gears and gearing. Out of all three types, gearing type is the most economical because they occupy less space and provide accurate power transmission. Feed mechanism Feed mechanism is done by hand feed but we can also give feed by using two methods one is the quick traverse hand feed and the other one is sensitive hand feed.
