Huron Dominos Pizza and NFPA Partner with Huron Fire Department to Promote Fire Safety During Fire Prevention Week
Residents may receive free pizzas for properly functioning smoke alarms Huron Dominos Pizza and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) are teaming up with the Huron Fire Department to promote fire prevention during Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12). Anyone who orders a Dominos pizza Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 6-8 may be randomly selected and surprised at the door when their pizza arrives aboard a fire engine. If the smoke alarms in the home are working, the pizza is free. If the smoke alarms are not working, the firefighters will replace the batteries or will give them a fully functioning alarm compliments of Huron Dominos. Fire safety is vitally important, said Mike Wilde, Huron Dominos Pizza owner. We are thrilled to work with the NFPA and the fire department on a program to promote the safety of our friends and neighbors and to reward those who make fire safety a priority. Fire Prevention Week is a great time of year to change the batteries in your smoke alarm, said Fire Chief Steve Osterling. Functioning smoke alarms save lives, but many people forget to maintain the batteries. We are excited to be working with Dominos Pizza to promote good fire safety precautions by rewarding residents who have working smoke alarms with a free, delicious pizza. Customers can call the Huron Dominos Pizza store, located at 500 N. Main Street at 419-433-5494 to place their order and be eligible for the fire truck delivery. Huron Dominos is open for delivery and carryout Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Dominos Pizza offers customers a full menu to choose from; including five types of pizza crust (hand tossed, thin, deep dish, gluten free crust and Brooklyn). Dominos American Legends; Dominos Artisan Pizzas, Penne Pastas, Dominos Oven Baked Sandwiches, Stuffed Cheesy Bread, Breadsticks, Parmesan Bread Bites, Chicken Wings, Boneless Chicken, Chocolate Lava Crunch Cakes, Cinna Stix and Coca-Cola products.

About Fire Prevention Week NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925. Visit www.firepreventionweek.org for more safety information.

Walleye Anglers are set to invade Huron this week end!

The 5th annual Fish Huron Ohio Walleye Challenge sponsored by South Shore Marine, Grady White Boats and Pursuit Boats is set to happen on Saturday this week end. 101 teams of anglers from all over the Midwest will participate in this tournament with a total purse of over $22,500 with $5000 going to the winner. There are also cash prizes for the biggest walleyes caught. This is sponsored by MarineMax of Port Clinton. The tournament is set to begin at 8 a.m. on the river in front of the Huron Boat Basin with the weigh in starting at 3:30 p.m. in the covered picnic area of the basin. In case of inclement weather, everything will happen on Sunday. The festivities will begin Friday evening at Mesenburgs Hall. A second group, Walleye Central, which has been coming to Huron for the past 7 years for their annual fall get together will combine with the Fish Huron Ohio group for a fund raising dinner. The proceeds from the event will be given to the Wounded Warrior program. The fundraising part of their fall get together has raised over $50,000 in the past and has been donated to many charities. Silent auctions for fishing equipment along with the famous Randy Mesenburg food is just a small part of the evening. There is no cost to attend but a donation for the dinner is greatly appreciated. The public is welcome to attend. Fish Huron Ohio would like to thank all their sponsors for helping to put this tournament on. Tournament Director, Steve Carlson, said, Without the support of these local businesses, we would not be able to grow this tournament as large as it has become. It shows that our local businesses value the anglers that are here to compete. A list of these sponsors is:

Berardis Family Restaurant, Hy-Miler Stores, Huron Market, Cornells, Huron Lagoons Marina, Holiday Harbor, Brass Pelican, Motel 6, Bennetts Novelties, Plantation Motel, Harbor Drive Thru, Arbys, Chamber of Commerce, Huron Township, City of Huron, Costa Azul, Crawford Insurance Group, FirstMerit Bank, Nobils Trophies, Gull Motel, Rye Beach Pizza N Deli, Huron Pizza House, Jims Pizza Box, Dominos, Vics Sports Centers, Mesenburg Catering

Around Town
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and it is important to identify this learning difference early in light of the 3rd grade reading guarantee. Dyslexia is a word of Greek origin, dys means problem, and lexia means language, so dyslexia simply means a problem with words. It falls under the umbrella of language disorders and research shows that language comprehension and expression problems in young children are often associated with later reading difficulty. It is a natural biological variation in the wiring of the brain in which language is processed differently, both written and oral, than in the general population. Basically the brain of a dyslexic person is not wired efficiently for language, but they may have strengths in other areas such as math, music, art, problem solving, or in fields that require visual/spatial ability such as design and architecture. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability affecting nearly 1 in 5 people to some degree, and it tends to run in families. Dyslexia is more common than autism, which affects roughly 1 in 88 people, and is also more common than ADD/ ADHD, which affects roughly 1 in 14 people. Of those people with ADD/ ADHD, nearly half will also be dyslexic. In a typical classroom of 20 students, as many as 5 of those students could be dyslexic. Dyslexia affects nearly 20% of the population, males and females equally, as well as people from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Below is a list of warning signs and a dyslexic child will have at least several of these symptoms. Also, dyslexia tends to run in families, and if a close family member is dyslexic, chances are 50% that a child will be dyslexic as well. Preschool Age: Delayed speech Articulation problems Mispronunciation of words (bisghetti for spaghetti, aminal for animal, continents for consonant) Saying the wrong word or forgetting the word (expressive language) Difficulty rhyming words Difficulty manipulating the sounds of speech (what is the word if the /t/ sound in CAT is changed to an /n/ sound?) Difficulty remembering letter names and their speech sound(s) School Age: Difficulty learning sight words Difficulty spelling words, especially retaining the correct spelling after a test Misreading words Slow and choppy reading Problems with word recall Problems with rote memorization A child with an unidentified learning difference may experience frustration, anxiety, stress, and low self esteem. Research has shown that a childs reading ability at the end of kindergarten is highly predictive of where their skills will be in 3rd grade. A child that is a poor reader in 1st grade will continue to be a poor reader in 3rd grade unless they receive the appropriate intervention. Now that Ohio has passed into law the 3rd grade reading guarantee, it is important to identify the struggling readers so they will not be held back due to their learning difference. For more information, please refer to the International Dyslexia Associations frequently asked questions and fact sheets found under the Information tab at the top of the page at www. interdys.org and www.ldonline.org is also another good source of information. Dyslexia runs in my family and both of my boys are dyslexic so please feel free to contact me by email at literacy.matters.oh@gmail.com.

Geneva Grape Jamboree

Since her crowning, Destini Smith, the Huron River Fest Queen and her court, 1st attendant Lianna Schwere, and 2nd Attendant Ashtyn Stadler have made their way across the state to various area festivals as representatives of the Huron community and the River Fest. Over the past weekend Queen Destini Smith traveled to Geneva, Ohio for the 50th annual Geneva Grape Jamboree. This year there were more than 150 visiting kings and queens! This coming weekend, the girls will be traveling to Vermilion for the annual Woolly Bear Festival.

Huron River Art & Pumpkin Fests Team Up For New Fall Tradition
Two of Hurons special fall events have teamed up to create a day of fun, activities and great art on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Huron River Art Fest draws artisans from around northern Ohio to share their treasures at this third annual event. The Pumpkin Festival, sponsored by the Huron Parks & Recreation Dept., is one of the highlights of the fall season for area families. Activities include a magic show, Jungle Bobs reptile show, a juggling show, a scarecrow decorating contest and face painting. A real crowd pleaser for the children is the Barnes Nursery pumpkin drop at 2:30 p.m. and several inflatable slides and houses. Fused glass art, many styles of custom-made jewelry, pottery and many items of Huron memorabilia are just a few of the unique items that will be available. Each of the artisans has donated an item for a giant raffle. Gourmet coffee, cider and doughnuts, along with perch sandwiches and hot dogs will be available throughout the day.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Fellow Community Members:
When Mr. John Caporini submitted his recent letter to the Editor he was not speaking for or acting as a Board member of the Huron City Schools. His letter represented his own perspective and was not an official statement by the Board of Education. Mr. Caporini failed to mention that recent cost savings measures have been implemented saving the district $652,000. He also failed to mention that the districts classified employees and their union representatives, along with the districts administration team recently completed a successful contract negotiation resulting in savings of over $100,000 annually for the next four years. We held our expenditures to an increase of only 1.9% in 2012, which is lower than the rate of inflation and an improvement over 2011. Also, we have identified more cost saving initiatives to be implemented in 2014. These measures combined with the renewal levy will ensure that we do not need new money before 2015, as forecasted. As good stewards of your tax dollars we will continue to identify and implement cost savings measures as we strive to extend the current funding cycle even beyond 2015. One of our districts goals is to improve community engagement, and good two-way communication is the key. There are many great things happening in our schools. If you would like accurate and honest information about the district please feel free to visit the schools website or call your school officials. Thank you. Scott Slocum Huron City Schools Board of Education President

Woodlands Third Grade Students Correspond with Students across the Globe
The third grade students in Mrs. Molly Pisanos and Mrs. Laura Harkelroads Language Arts classes began their year-long correspondence with students from around the world. Student teacher for Mrs. Harkelroad, Mrs. Heather Byington, taught the reading selection, Schools around the World as the students learned about schools and cultures and how other countries shared similarities and differences to the United States. The third grade students at Woodlands Intermediate School have teamed up with students in Australia and Italy to exchange letters and culture packages through e-Pals Global Community, an educational, project-based learning network. Last week the students received a cultural package from students in Traralgon, Victoria, Australia. The package included: an Australian flag, replicas of the countrys currency, stuffed koala bears, pictures, the book Donkeys cant Fly on Planes and a Kangaroo Jack. Over the course of the school year, the Huron students will post photographs of themselves with the stuffed kangaroo on a blog spot for the Australian students to see where their Jack has been. We will be sending the Australian students an American Eagle to post photos to a blog for us to see their country, explained Byington. Other items in the cultural package being sent to Australia include: American flags, American made crayons, American money and a description of how much candy it would purchase. Some of the students in Australia they are correspond-

ing with are from refugee camps from war and poverty inflicted areas such as Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Their stories and illustrations are shared in the book, Donkeys Cant Fly on Planes . The Huron students read the heartfelt stories and studied the illustrations from the book the Australian students sent. Our students were very intrigued and touched by the refugee stories, explained Byington. All of the students wrote letters to their new found pen pals. This portion of the assignment fulfilled the friendly-letter writing process for the students. The students took a lot of time to work on their letters and are thrilled to send them to Italy and Australia, stated Byington. Down the road this could ultimately work into an email type of correspondence for the students and could quite possibly lead to a lasting pen pal relationship for these students.

Lady Tigers Learn About Speed, Power, and Consistency

Hurons varsity volleyball team finished this past week still undefeated in the SBC with wins over Perkins (3-1) and Oak Harbor (3-0). But class was in session on Saturday when Padua Franciscan came to town. The team from Parma is currently ranked #1 in Division II for the state of Ohio while Huron is ranked a very respectable 7th in Division III. However, according to Maxpreps, Padua is the 9th best team in all the USA and best in our state regardless of school size. Many on their team are highly recruited and will play at the uppermost levels of the NCAA next season. But this has become the norm at Huron under head coach Don Wood. The SBC can only get a team to a certain level of play for the state tourney. But facing the best teams in the state helps Wood prepare his teams to play at a State Championship caliber volleyball. The speed and relentless consistency of Padua tested the girls like no other opponent has in recent memory. While the outcome was clear early, the Lady Tigers fought valiantly with solid frontline play and a definite no give attitude. Padua serving was outstanding and kept the Tiger offense on their heels, unable to set up many kill opportunities. They also had knack for little, well-placed dink shots where no back line Huron defender could get to them. Padua Franciscan won 3-0 (16-25, 25-14, 16-25). The solid play of senior Piper Miedema should be noted here. She led the team with four blocks, added five kills and in general seemed undaunted by her worthy opponent. While Hannah Cantrill (10 kills, 9 digs) and Hadley Sterett (9 digs) are the leaders and fill the stat sheets, it has been the role players like Miedema, McCarthy, Wisehart, Hemker and Schoelwer that make the team well rounded and potentially formidable. Continued development of the freshman setters, Gabriella Wood (12 assists) and Alli Grendow will make the team even stronger as the regular season nears its conclusion. Left: Megan McCarthy goes on the offensive. Right: Junior Hadley Sterett fires one of her four kills against Padua. Contributed by Chris Mischler

Huron Falls to Pirates 28-14

Mighty-Mighty Tigers

The Huron Lady Tiger Juniors Softball team went 10-0 in the regular season and 2-0 in the tournament to remain undefeated in the 2013 Fall Softball League and capture the 10u championship. Pictured front row, from left: Cora Mamere, Reagan Roldan, Mallory Majoy, Alyssa Zeigler Makenna Pender, and Madison Belden. Middle row: Kennedy Camp, McKena Muratori, Gracie Glenaman, Meadow Bess, Jennifer Cobleigh, and Madison Washburn. Top row: coaches Rich Roldan and Dan Pender.

Possibly the biggest showdown in the SBC this year took place last Friday at Perkins. It was a beautiful Fall evening on the Northcoast, perfect for football. Perkins came in undefeated and looking to establish their rushing attack. And run they did, for 306 yards against the Tiger defense. Huron played hard and it was a very physical game as witnessed from the sidelines. The Tigers opened the game moving the ball right down the field, but a missed field goal thwarted that potential score. But in the end, the Pirates just didnt allow enough of those scoring opportunities. QB Cody Thompson had 119 rushing yards, still it wasnt nearly enough. Perkins did a nice job of containing Thompson and limited his big play opportunities. Perkins scored 21 unanswered points until Thompson broke away on a 19 yard run. Hurons second score came in the fourth quarter on a Thompson 5yd pass to RB Tommy Bogden. Above: RB Andrew Dowell runs after catching one of his three passes. Right: Perkins did a nice job of keeping QB Cody Thompson contained. Contributed by Chris Mischler
