Abingdons Treasures: Neighborhoods

A family owned and operated restaurant in Abingdon, Maryland opened its doors in August 1984. The Kanaras Brothers, Tom and Chris, owned and operated Box Hill Pizzeria. Father George and mother Demetra supported their sons as young entrepreneurs. With a strong commitment to customer service and satisfaction in a family-friendly environment, what once was a small eat-in, carry-out restaurant has expanded to a popular regional eatery with longtime, faithful customers. They come in weekly to enjoy the "World Famous Crab Cakes," incredible Italian dishes, authentic Greek specialties and delicious hot and cold subs to name just a few of the menu favorites. Demetra Annos Kanaras, age 74, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on July 1, 2013 at her home. Born in Sparta, Greece, she came to America in 1954. She was the daughter of the late George and Evagelia Mandris Annos. She helped her husband with the Red Fox Restaurant in Bel Air and in 1984, she left there to help her two sons, Chris and Tom, open the Box Hill Pizzeria in Abingdon which has been in business for 29 years. She loved her customers and had worked up to two weeks before she passed away. She volunteered at her church, had many friends and loved to bake and entertain guests. She and her husband enjoyed going to Aruba and Ocean City, MD and she loved her grandchildren who were the "apple of her eye". The family would like to thank Johns Hopkins, with a special thanks to Dr. John Fetting, and Gilchrist Hospice, and to Dana who took care of her at the end. Mrs. Kanaras is survived by her husband of 54 years, George Kanaras; sons, Thomas G. Kanaras of Bel Air and Christian G. Kanaras and wife, Margaret, of Fallston; sisters, Catherine Annos Nichols of Baltimore and Voula Papadakos of Sparta, Greece; and grandchildren, Nico, Alexis, Kristen and Nicole In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Thomas G. Annos.

Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Set for October 12, 2013
The Harford County Office of Recycling and the local Emergency Planning Committee offers residents the chance to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste products. Its part of Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Residents can dispose of oil-based paints, cleaning products, bleach, pool chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and mercury thermometers. You cannot dispose of explosives, ammunition, medical waste, radioactive materials and antifreeze. The event is free and open to Harford County residents. The collection will be held at the Mulch

and Compost Facility of the Harford Waste Disposal Center on Saturday, October 12 from 10am to 2pm. It is located at 3135 Scarboro Road in Street, Maryland. Proof of residency will be required. Sheriff Recognized for Proactive Traffic Safety Initiative

(Sheriffs Plan Integrates into Marylands Overall Strategic Highway Safety Plan )

Harford County Sheriff, L. Jesse Bane, was recently recognized by the Maryland Highway Safety Office for his work as Chairman of the Harford County Traffic Safety Task Force, an initiative established by the Harford County Council for the purpose of identifying resources to target efforts to enforce traffic laws, reduce traffic crashes and eliminate traffic fatalities. The award, recently presented to the Sheriff at the Maryland Sheriffs Association Conference, recognized his leadership in leading this initiative and integrating the recommendations of the task force as part of the overall objectives set forth by the Maryland Highway Safety Offices Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The goal of Marylands Plan is to reduce motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries. Additionally, it focuses on issues that cause the greatest number of traffic safety problems, as well as the geographic areas where traffic crashes are most prevalent. Like Maryland, areas on which Harford County will concentrate are distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving, highway infrastructure, the wearing of seat belts and pedestrian safety. At the request of Councilman Chad Shrodes the Harford County Council, by resolution, created the Task Force. Representatives of the Traffic Safety Task Force include the Harford County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police Bel Air and JFK Barracks, and the Police Departments of Aberdeen, Bel Air, and Havre de Grace, along with representatives from Harford County government, community organizations, and community members. Task Force members studied Harford Countys Traffic Safety Issues and just recently released its final report to the Council. The Sheriff said he was honored to receive the award noting what everyone already recognizes one traffic fatality is one too many. We need to work together as a community to raise driver awareness and change bad driving habits, Bane said. Traffic enforcement is a countywide issue not the sole responsibility of any one agency. I appreciate that everyone police, government and community members - are involved and have joined forces in this initiative. I am confident by working together we can reduce traffic injuries and eliminate traffic fatalities in Harford County, he concluded. The Maryland Sheriffs Conference was recently held in Ocean City. October 31, 2013 The municipalities listed below have recommended the following Trick-or-Treat times: City of Aberdeen - 5pm to 8pm, Town of Bel Air 5:00pm to 8:00pm, City of Havre de Grace 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Outside these municipalities, Harford County Sheriffs Office recommends trick or treaters go out between the hours of 6pm to 8pm. Law enforcement agencies will have additional patrol officers working on October 31st to assist the community and to help insure you have a safe and Happy Halloween. Citizens are encouraged to report unusual or suspicious activity to the Sheriffs Office by calling 410-838-6600. In cases of emergency, call 9-1-1

Thirteen Helpful Tips to Make Sure Your Kids Have a Healthy and Happy Halloween.
Getting all dressed in your costume to go trick-or-treating? Pure spooky joy. To keep it fun, everyone needs to stay safe.
1. Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you dont think theyre old enough to trick-or-treat on their own. 2. There is safety in numbers. If theyre old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, tell your kids to stay in a group. 3. Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating, and make sure they stick to it. 4. Take the long way 'round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots. 5. Try tick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch. 6. Stay outside. Make sure your kids dont go inside someones house. They can get their candy from the porch. 7. Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight. 8. Remember, shorter = safer. Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure your kids costumes arent so long that they can trip over them. 9. Don't cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear make-up so they can see better. 10. Quality-check treats. Check your kids candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with. 11. Say "no" to strangers. Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger. 12. Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available. 13. Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and lots of candy.
