2012 GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE (GDOM)

COURSE OBJECTIVE With the introduction of the Workplace Safety & Health Act, all factories and workplaces of various risk levels and industries will be covered. Emphasis is also place on the importance of offering an integrated workplace safety and health program. The Graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine, offered by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies, National University of Singapore, aims to provide comprehensive skills to doctors in general practice and specialists who wish to have a better understanding of the occupational aspects of their specialty and to be able to implement program to protect and promote a healthy workplace. Successful candidates would be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine and would also be eligible to apply to be a Designated Workplace Doctor (DWD) with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). ELIGIBILITY Medical Officers or General Practitioners with a recognized MBBS degree (or equivalent) At least two years post-registration clinical experience

INTAKE DATE The course commences in June/July every year and is conducted once yearly. CME POINTS CME points will be awarded to doctors registered with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAMME The main elements of the programme include: 6 weeks of direct learning, site visits and assignments, making up to 120 hours Continual assessments Submission of a written portfolio More details will be provided in the timetable.

TRAINING COURSE The formal training consisting of 120 hours is equally distributed across the 6 modules as shown below. The modular system is designed to encourage the participation of medical practitioners who may have difficulties taking extended periods of absence from their work. All 6 modules are offered every year. Each module is usually offered in a one-week block (first Monday - Friday of every month beginning June/ July, from 1330hrs - 1800hrs), and must be taken in sequential order. Some parts of the modules may be conducted over the weekends or in the evenings, if required. All modules have to be successfully completed within a 3-year period ASSESSMENT Candidates MUST satisfy at least 75% attendance at the lectures and site visits in order to be admitted to the assessments at the end of Modules 1 & 2 and Modules 3 & 4. Upon completion of Module 6, candidates are required to submit a written portfolio comprising 2 reports, totaling 2,000 to 3,000 words, of which a) 1 report should be based on a visit to, and assessment of, a workplace, b) 1 report should be based on a clinical case seen by the candidate. Reports should demonstrate that the candidate is able to apply the principles of occupational health and safety in practice. Candidates may be required to sit for an Oral examination at the end of Module 6 (where necessary). All assessment components, including the Oral examination, must be satisfactorily completed for the diploma to be awarded.

Fees are subject to changes without prior notice. # Non refundable The application fee of S$40 (non-refundable) must be paid at the point of application. The course fees are applicable only upon successful course enrolment.

The mode of payment is via cheques/bank drafts or credit/debit card ONLY. All cheques and bank drafts should be crossed and made payable to the National University of Singapore. An official receipt of payment will be issued by the Division upon your request. Please indicate on the top right-hand corner of the application form if you require a receipt. Cash will not be accepted.

Application forms are obtainable from DGMSs office or downloadable from the DGMS website http://www.med.nus.edu.sg/dgms. All supporting documents, as stated above, and an application fee of S$40 (non-refundable), must be submitted together with the application form to DGMS at the point of application. All applications that are late, incomplete or without fee payment will not be processed and will be returned to sender. Applicants should also note that it is a university regulation that they cannot be concurrently registered for more than one programme/course in an academic year. Other respective rules/ regulations of DGMS will apply. DGMS is not obliged to give any reasons for unsuccessful applications.

WITHDRAWAL Any notice of withdrawal from the course must be given in writing to DGMS by Monday, 18 June 2012. No refund shall be given for withdrawals after the above mentioned date. Original receipt for fee paid must be submitted together with the withdrawal notification.
