Healthy Health for Healthy Happiness

Susanna Mystica Victor, Department of Biotechnology, St.Josephs College of Engineering, Chennai Abstract Most of the studies and research conducted on the relationship of human health and happiness have come to a common conclusion that healthy health results in a healthy happiness. From a study conducted in 2005 by Andrew Steptow and Michael Marmot, findings have found that happiness is clearly related to biological markers that play an important role in health. The most peak moment or the unsaturated level of happiness in human life appears only once and that is stage of the foetus in the mothers womb. The foetus is protected from all kinds of detrimental factors, but the saddening part of this stage is that it always remains as a theory to be read but never remembered consciously by an individual. One of the important factor that always constraint happiness when taking human health is the age and its related illness. Keywords:Transition factor, acceptance factor, common illness, precautions. Section I The entire human life is a continuous process. One stage leads to an upgraded and a follow up stage . Stages can be classified by many ways such as physical , growth factors , memory capacity and age. The division of human life based on age is as follows Birth, Childhood Adolescence Young adult Middle Age Old Age Death. Each stage is accompanied by the needed happiness however many demanding factors which creates negative effects turns them into a short lived on. The aim of this paper is to indicate the two deciding factors which are the reason for the disappearance of happiness. They are: Transition from one stage of life to another. The late acceptance of the demands of the body. The scenario of age related happiness decade ago followed a U shaped pattern as described below.

The old age had a fair percent of happiness in the above graph, but the changing life pattern , the economic stress, status pressures, have largely affected human health in many ways and the graphs appears to be as follows

Based on the two factors the below points have been summarized respective to the age and the related happiness. Section II: Age and the Related Happiness. 2.1. Birth and childhood (0-10 years) After the child is delivered to the external environment it starts combating a variety of microorganisms, and falls a victim to it. The main reason for it is the underdeveloped immune system. The unsaturated happiness that the child enjoys in a mothers womb deteriorates after its emergence into the world. The major risk factors that the child faces in its childhood are Chicken pox Scarlet fever Whooping cough Three day fever Tetanus Polio Pneumonia All these disease arise due to the ineffective immune system. Hence the entire period of childhood is being spent in protecting and guiding oneself from the combating microorganisms. 2.1.1. Two factor effect: The effect of transition is null as it is the starting stage. the onset of this effect will be seen in the stages to follow.

The acceptance factor is quite noticeable here because the state of immune system is quite known. People do get adjusted to the demanding attention. 2.2. Adolescence (11-20): This phase marks the onset of the development of sexual characters. Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological human development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to legal adulthood. Puberty is rapid physical growth and psychological changes resulting in sexual maturity. The average onset of puberty is at 10 or 11 for girls and age 11 or 12 for boys. The common problems associated with this phase are: Stomach pain Chest pain Fatigue Sleep disorders Headaches 2.2.1. The two factor effect: After the childhood once when the body gets accustomed to the demanding immune effect and becomes compatible with external surrounding, a new problem originates from ones own body. The time when the person believes that he is ready to enter into a new stage of life experiencing happiness due to the developed immune system, he/she is banged down again due to the adolescent factor. This transition creates a lasting impact .this stress should be handled in an appropriate way to avoid problems like drug addiction, sexual abuse, peer pressure, violent crimes and other illegal activities. The acceptance factor in this phase seems to be very low when compared to the other stages. A complex mechanism occurring without proper knowledge coupled with an immature mind and thought process makes an individual to accept to the sudden turbulence. Takes a lot of time to get

Young Adult Age (20-40) : A young/prime adult, according to Erik Erikson's stages of human development, is generally a person in the age range of 20 to 40. This stage is known for renewal and energetic part of human life. This excess spirit though strives positive happiness for an individual tends to wear away the essential parts of the human body. The excess strain work load and budding responsibilities create a effective strain in the normal functions of the human body. This proves to be detrimental for the short lived happiness experienced in the initial point of the stage. The common disease that young people face are : Liver problems Hypertension Insomnia Obesity Computer vision syndrome 2.3.1. The two factor effect: Transition in this phase is commonly accepted. This stage being the exploration and a blooming stage in human life it is commonly welcomed with happiness and zeal. But the trouble arises at a point where the excess enthusiasm takes a strain on the health pattern. This initially slows down the rate of happiness and lead to complete banishment. Acceptance is also widely accepted here. This phase though starts with a great happy start finally gives a tiresome conclusion. The people of this phase though have the acceptance for their age fail accept the capacity of one s body .the working people are common victims to the negative effects of this stage. 2.4. Middle Age (40-60_) Middle-aged adults show signs of aging such as loss of skin elasticity and graying of the hair. Physical fitness usually fades away. Accumulation of body fat, reduction in aerobic

performance and a decrease in maximal heart rate are the common characters that an adult adapts himself to due to the strain exposed on his health. Strength and flexibility also decrease throughout middle age. They have a very significant risk due to the overloading stress. They are often subjected to : Diabetes Hypertension Blood pressure Anemia Obesity Arthritis 2.4.1. The two factor effect: Transition from a young age to a middle age which could also be a preview of the old age is quite disturbing. When the mind still glorifies in the same enthusiastic spirit of young age, the body fails to cooperate and match the lively spirit. In his young age he gains happiness at the ending stage as he has mastered the art of combating the work and social stress. When he enters the next stage with the characters he learned, everything disappears once the realization happens, the fact of being aged. The acceptance is commonly very low in this stage. The mind fails to register the fact the body machinery is completely exhausted . this stress itself plays a major role to passive reaction for happiness. 2.5. Old Age (60 +) The boundary between middle age and old age cannot be defined exactly because it shifts according to context and to society. People can be considered old because of certain changes in their activities or social roles. Examples: people may be considered old when they become grandparents, or when they begin to do less or different workretirement. This phase was once considered to be relaxed state of human life. This stage is commonly associated with: 244

Indo-Bhutan International Conference On Gross National Happiness Pages: 242-245 Wrinkles and liver spots on the skin due to loss of subcutaneous fat Change of hair color to gray or white Hair loss Reduced circulatory system function and blood flow Reduced lung capacity Reduced immune system function Though the above mention symptoms are already known to be the deciding factor , the research and analysis shows that a fair percent of aged people are subjected to memory related sickness such as : Alzheimers Depression dementia these diseases have taken incidence in the old aged people for the current decade. The major factor for these complications are the stressful and over exaggerated work load experienced in previous stages. 2.5.1. The two factor effect: Transition is quite easy here and a decent portion is satisfied with happiness derived in the aged period. The common acceptance for status of aged people is commonly accepted. The acceptance factor plays a major role in abolishing happiness in this stage. Acceptance factor is very low in this stage. Just when a person settles down to reduce the trauma that the workload created right from his early adult age , he loses his memory cells and remains in a different world always. The excess strain that he forced himself to at an early age is the most important factor leading to these memories, related problems.

Section III. Precautions 3.1. Reduce the risk receive healthy happiness: Since every age group is related to variant level of problems due to the human health, precautions can be taken to redeem the lost happiness. They are listed below Childhood: vaccination and health care Adolescence: prior knowledge and a healthy view about the working of human body Young age: stress management, proper care of the organs, healthy diet and living and balanced social life. Middle age: acceptance of the ageing process, physical exercise, regular monitoring of the human body. Old age: constant engagement with the current world, relaxation, acceptance. 3.2. Conclusion: Thus the age related risk plays a major role in the loss of happiness. If prior precaution steps and realizations get commensurate, a healthy life could be maintained with healthy happiness. Reference: [1] Wikipedia.
