But.. This illness came from him (it passed over genetically) What does my grandfather have to do with our son Paul? Cant you see the link? Look for the origin But Ondiek, my husband, this is by Gods design By God? How? How come other peoples kids dont have it Ondiek husband, there is a proverb that states, if a shoe is torn it belongs to the ` cobbler, once it is sewn and restored it belongs to the owner. (looking at his shoes) Yes my shoe is torn and it is still mine even before I take it to the cobbler I am not talking about your shoes, I am talking about Paul, our son that the origin is from my side of the family. Is it only from my side of the family really? Cant the illness also come from your side of the family? What are you trying to say? From primary school class 1 to 7 he was okay, he went to high school from form 1 to form 4 (grade 12) till university for a degree. You were proud of him then calling him dearest sondaddydaddy now that hes unwell, it becomes my blood and no longer yours I have really deprived myself of finances, all my toil and sweat to support our son and it pains me deeply Then I urge you to call him our son and not mine alone. We both bore him. Yes our son. Yours and mine. We wanted him to be somebody, to lift us from this yoke of poverty and struggle to make ends meet. Until when should I work at the quarry blasting rocks and carrying them on my back Husband, listen, I have also been working hard hand washing other peoples laundry just to make that extra shilling. So it is not just you, I dont do this type of casual work for fun and it is not my wish Listen wife..(cut short by Lucy) No husband, answer me, do you think that it is my wish to also scrub their floor until they shine like a mirror? Is it? I am really pained by this dear wife

What you should be saying dear husband is that we need special prayers of deliverance Yes we can be prayed for. What about your grandmother? I seem to remember that she had the habit of talking to herself, didnt she? (irritated by that comment) lets us leave out my grandfather and grandmother out of this. This is our family yours and mine If it is not on your side of the family, then I blame it on curses and witchcraft No. I disagree. He is not bewitched Yes. He is bewitched because he was my only source of hope for a better future Listen husband.(cut off by Ondiek) Did you not hear him saying that he has been in China then Afghanistan. It is only the illness manifesting from his mindwhy dont you go to the pharmacy and get his medicine Yes. You know very well that we didnt get any sleep yesterday Yes. If he doesnt sleep then we will also not be able to sleep Go into the house and get me his prescription so that I can try and get his medication. (Speaking to himself) Dear God try and remember me, have mercy. The world has issues, who knew my only son would become a mad man, a crazy person. If only I knew. Do all you can to get his medicine. You know that I am the one who will stay up and watch him the whole night if our son doesnt sleep. One last thing before I go regarding this compound gate door, keep it shut and I dont want this door open Ondiek, we have no valuables in this house like a TV or radio No! Its not about theft! Its about the neighbors who keep passing by our homestead. I dont want them to know that our son is mad. We will never hear the end of it and be the talk of the village. Our son is crazy and lost his mindI dont want this kind of talk because I will also be called a crazy person for siring a crazy son True, when you leave here I will ensure that the gate is shut behind you We have to protect the family name, this is our family secret. Even the landlord might look for a way to terminate the tenancy due to this scandal

I will protect our name and do exactly as you have asked You already know what our neighbors think Thats because the mothers of Rahab and Wanjiku are loud mouths they go gossiping all over (Walking towards the gate before exiting) Make sure that you shut this door behind me I am locking the gate behind you, be on your way then Lock it quickly as I leave I will place this rock behind the gate as I shut it to hold it shut. No one will dare come in. It is shut from our nosy neighbors. The mothers of Nyambura and Wanjiku are gossipers they will announce it everywhere and scandalize us (walking toward the pharmacy) How are you Nyamburas Mom? (muttering to himself) she wont even say hello to me. Its good to be happy and thank God

(Pushes the gate really hard and pushes the rock keeping the gate shut) Olexander: Paul: How is this door closed? Not even a padlock. it is shut but not locked uuh uuuh uuuh

(Paul toying with the soil and holding a brick to his ear like a mobile phone) Olexander: Paul!....(momentary pause)..Paul! .. Paul! Why arent you responding when I call you? China(momentary pause) Japan Ondiek! Can you come out of your house! How can you sleep till 10am? Who is out there? Ondiek! Come out! Uuuuu uuuuu uuuu China How did you get in yet I had shut the gate? This door was closed for a reason It was not closed, I only pushed the gate open and the rock gave way You should have knocked so that I open the door for you I knocked and called out but no one came to open the gate. Why are you complaining? I dont like your familiarity here, next time [lease knock the door and wait out there till someone opens for you. Have you ever seen me come to your house? Then you should use a padlock and chain if you really want to keep this gate closed (changing the subject) what do you want here? I came here to see your husband Ondiek so that we can go to work together He has gone out on an errand and will be back shortly Why has he left the young man sitting out there at the door Leave the young man Paul alone Paul.Paul Uuuu---uuuu---uuu The young man is truly out of his mindhes gone crazy completely This is what I dont like Olexander, this type of contempt Obama!...uuuuuu..u-u-u-u-u No! its not contempt, if the young man has lost his mind theres nothing you or anyone else can do His name is Paul not a crazy person or a lunatic. He is my son of whom I bore and brought into this world. So what if he has lost his mind; what business is it of yours anyway?

Did you meet Rahabs mother out there? The one who lives down the road? Yes Have you ever seen me talking with her? You talk as if you met and talked with her. She is a loud mouth that gossips everywhere she goes How can it be gossip to say that your son is crazy? Its the truth anyway Rahabs mother is even better of the two of you. You are worse than her and youre too much by theway Just ask around. Paul told me that your husband, Ondiek is in China yet he is somewhere nearby currently. Even if he says Japan or England, what business is it of yours? Please leave, get out of here. It concerns me because.(cut short by Lucy) I said get out here, leave my compound at once..

6|Page| USPKENYA VIDEO TRANSCRIP T VIOJA TROUPE

Ondiek:

This medication is not available currently at all the government hospitals that I have tried going to The doctor has really prescribed a lot of anti-depressants for your son Yes! All those medications are for my son Ooh goodness me. My son is speaking gibberish , I cant understand a word my son says this days. We dont even sleep at night due to the noise he makes. Were not sleeping well at home and its no joke The doctor has prescribed some really expensive medication Yes. So that he can recover quickly. Yo know weve been friends for many years and am hoping we can work something out. There are 5 different types of medication prescribed Yes. I also observed the same. Its okay theres no problem Oh my goodnessok no problem Yes. The sum total for all these medication is six thousand Kenya shillings How can it be KES 6,000? Please I dont have that money but my son really needs these medicines. Hes even become violent and I havent slept for some time now Okay I was thinking of giving you what I have, i.e. KES 500 even if it gets me a dose for a day or two as per your mercy Remember you still owe me KES 4,500 from the last time you filled your prescription Yes. I am aware This is what were going to do now, I will take this KES 500 as payment for the previous debt, so now you owe me KES 4,000 How can you apply that money to the old debt and my son is really sick. He is even violent!

Pharmacist:

I understand your problem Ondiek, but you cant keep accumulating additional debts. You already owe me KES 4,000 and unfortunately, I cannot extend an additional line of credit until you clear that balance Isnt there a way you can help me. Please I know its an additional KES 6,000 but I will eventually pay it off Listen here Pauls Dad(Ondiek cuts him short) Please I beg of you. Have some compassion on my plight Did I or didnt I help you last time? Yes you did Even when I go to restock my pharmacy from suppliers I pay on receipt of stock. I am never supplied these medications on credit. I always have to pay in full. I really sympathise with you but these types of drugs are very expensive and have to be paid for I wish the government could do something about it to help people like myself access these medicines even on subsidy or free of charge True..true..I agree. Do this Ondiek get some money and offset your outstanding balance then we can talk more on the new prescription and getting medicines for your son Paul (in protest) fine is this even a shop anymore. How about you give me KES 50 as you have already decided that I am crazy No Give me KES 5 then (shaking his head) No How can you take my money and put it towards an old debt that is robbery without violence. My hard earned KES 500 am even going to the media with this story. I will announce that my human rights have been violated and the government will have to intervene Go get the balance of your outstanding debt then come back in the evening I have gone but remember even you can also become a lunatic (walking away as he mutters to himself)

Please leave my house I can leave but.what do you do with his time? Why are you intruding in my sons life? How have I intruded? Talk about your own issues or yours and my husbands just leave my son out of it completely. Why did you invest so much in his education, hes really educated now look at him See yourself out..theres the door I can see the door and I will leave but if your son has lost his mind there is nothing you can do..its not a secret. Why are you getting upset about me stating the fact that your son is crazy. This is a small matter to disagree in this manner. You are my husbands best friend and I dont want to insult you out of respect for my husband. Open the gate and leave now I am not leaving and I will not open the gatelets leave that matter to rest instead tell me where your husband is Cant you hear? Hes not here, he went out on an errand and will be back laterplease leave Get a seat for me so that I can wait for your husband. Is it possible that your husband smoked marijuana to the extent that he sired a son who is a lunatic? What is this that you are telling me? Maybe youre the one who smoked marijuana Do I look like I have ever smoked marijuana? What about the illicit brews of alcohol like Changaa which destroyed your sons brain (bursts out laughing) What is so funny?

Ondiek: Olexander: Ondiek:

I thought I told you to close this gate and let no one else in after I left the house! We agreed that..(Ondiek cuts him short) Why are you investigating my private and personal life. I could hear you from outside alleging that I smoked marijuana and made my son mad! Are you my friend really even though my son is unwell? What type of illness is this? I was just explaining to your wife.(cut short by ondiek who talks to his wife) I told you people like this one here (wife cuts him short) I dont even know how he opened this gate. He gossips too much anyway. Now that he knows, the whole world also knows. Listen Ondiek, I asked your son Paul to tell me where you are and he told me that youre in China and I found that very amusing How is that funny? What kind of a friend are you? Your friend of course! Even if my son is crazy, hes my blood and my responsibility Its just that it made me laugh not that I am mocking your predicament (pulling his wife aside for a private chat) I went to the pharmacy the medication will now cost us KES 6,000 our situation is bad because he refused to give us the medicine due to the previous debt outstanding. Were finished What are you people discussing about medicine? Who is sick? (visibly irritated) were discussing medicine for our son medicine for what? Hes a lunatic what will medicine help with! It will be better to use that money for something else more productive. Leave your friend alone. Please finish for me the developments from the pharmacy He said that we have to clear the KES 4,500 from the last time we took medicine and he took the KES 500 I had in my pocket towards that debt So he took the only KES 500 you had and you didnt get any medicine? Again, why are you wasting your money on your son cant you see that he has already lost his mind?

(Visibly angry and irritated) hes my son, what is it to you and stop calling my son crazy. Hes my blood Do this Ondiek, bring that prescription here. Get your tools for the quarry so that youre not late for work Will you listen to me or your wife? Use that money for something else I have gone to get the tools for work at the quarry. What you have forgotten Olexander is that I have kept your secret of not wearing under wear all these years. I have never told anyone Where does the story of under garments come in? You see these tight trousers of yours, these bikers? Theres no undergarment that you wear and I havent told anyone about it Listen Ondiek, all am saying is that KES 6,000 is a lot of money to waste on medicine. Your son is like that and you cant change the situation How am I wasting my money? Were talking about my only sons health. Hes my first born, I have educated him from nursery to college I know all that and how youve toiled to educate him. All am saying is that you should set him free to roam about like the other lunatics we see at the market Ooh so you want him to go to town so that my name can be tarnished and ridiculed. Listen Olexander, just as our boss owes us money for daily mining of rocks at the quarry, let us speak in one voice. I have kept your secret so please keep mine. This issue must never be mentioned at work place. You have never bought a single pair of underwear, you dont even know how much one costs. You have flipped the story here too swiftly I will lose this job if they know about my son. I work setting the dynamite for breaking rocks. You will also lose your job when I lose mine by virtue of your association with me (Speaking to his wife) bring the padlock I chain our son to this tree Youre still talking with your friend here? Why are you locking him up? Never you mind. I lock him up to the tree so that he stays around the same place. If he ventures outside our homestead he can be beaten by the villagers in case he gets into trouble for acts hes no longer in control of. Let him roam around freely like the other mad men at the village If he goes out, people will beat him up in his present condition A mad person is a mad personwhy chain him set him free for heavens sake People wont understand his present condition they will insult and beat him up

Ondiek: Olexander: Lucy:

(Paul moving closer to the tree where he is chained at the ankle of his foot) Olexander: Lucy is not speaking well, I speak as a parent as well. Let him roam about, he has already lost his mind why chain him? (ignoring Olexander and addressing his wife Lucy) Please bring Paul his food before we leave Obama.ObamaObama Bring his ball as well so that he can play with it. Olexander, if we dont lock up the young man people will beat him up. We have to do this everyday Everyday!! I urge you not to speak of what you have seen here to anyone out there. I still think it is better if you let him roam around freely even if picking up papers and rubbish in the streets and the market as long as he doesnt get hit by cars on the road. A mad person is a mad person so just let him be I dont want people knowing that my son is mad because I will be associated with madness by relation to him and you will also be in the same boat for associating with me. I beseech you to please keep my secret. Let it be our secret. It will be very bad even at work okay? Not everyone understands that this is an illness

Do you understand Paul? (Nodding affirmatively) I have gone to wash clothes (toying with the ugali in the bowl by prodding it with his hands. He holds it in his hands like a ball and presses it repeatedly on his lips without taking a bite. Slowly he starts to nibble on it then holds it in his hand and places it on his ear as a mobile phone while still chewing the dry ugali and says) ObamaObama
