VLAN Manager Installation Guide

Chapter 1
Introduction
This chapter provides an overview of the tasks associated with SPECTRUM VLAN Manager installation.

SPECTRUM VLAN Manager is available as a standalone application or can be integrated into your SPECTRUM network management software. Standalone VLAN Manager components include the VLAN Manager software, SecureFast switch firmware images, and related documentation. The SPECTRUM-integrated version includes all of the standalone components plus the models and functionality necessary for monitoring VLAN switches using SPECTRUM. The VLAN Manager software, supporting documentation, and Adobe Acrobat Reader (for viewing the documentation) are provided on the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager CD-ROM. This version of VLAN Manager is designed to work with compatible SecureFast firmware and, in the case of the Integrated VLAN Manager, with compatible versions of SPECTRUM network management software. SPECTRUM and SecureFast firmware are distributed separately from the VLAN Manager CD-ROM. Refer to your SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Release Notes and SecureFast firmware release notes to ensure that your VLAN Manager software is compatible with your SecureFast firmware/SPECTRUM versions.

Installation Overview
Both the standalone version and a SPECTRUM-integrated version of SPECTRUM VLAN Manager are included on the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager CD-ROM. The installation is similar for either version. The differences are explained in the installation procedures. The SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager can only be used with certain versions of SPECTRUM network management software. It is very important to read the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Release Notes, available on Cabletrons SPECTRUM Manuals web site at http://www.cabletron.com, before installing SPECTRUM VLAN Manager software and SecureFast firmware.

9031997-09 1-1

Installing the Standalone Version of SPECTRUM VLAN Manager

Although the specific steps may vary depending on your management platform, all VLAN Manager installations have the following processes in common: Installing VLAN Manager (which includes online documentation) Installing SecureFast VLAN switch firmware images You must bring down the VLANServer before reinstalling VLAN Manager software over an existing installation area. Failure to do so will result in the installation being halted until you remove the .VMNDB.LOCK file.

CAUTION

Installing the Standalone Version of SPECTRUM VLAN Manager

The VLAN Manager Install Panel provides a point-and-click user interface for controlling the VLAN Manager installation. Chapter 2, UNIX Installation and Chapter 3, Windows NT Installation describe the procedures for installing the standalone version of VLAN Manager. When you have finished installing VLAN Manager, you can download the SecureFast switch firmware images to your SecureFast VLAN switches using the VLAN Manager Control Panel or the tool of your choice.

Installing the SPECTRUM-Integrated Version of VLAN Manager

The SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager includes the models and functionality necessary for monitoring VLAN switches using SPECTRUM, as well as the VLAN Manager client application itself. The installation of the SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager is similar to the installation of a SPECTRUM management module. You need an extraction key in order to install the SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager. IMPORTANT: This release of the SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager requires SPECTRUM 5.0, rev 1, supplement CS3/MS3.

NOTE

The standalone installation procedures in Chapter 2, UNIX Installation and Chapter 3, Windows NT Installation also include the information you need to install the

SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager. Refer to the SPECTRUM Installation Guide if you need assistance with the management module portion of the installation. When you have finished installing VLAN Manager, you can download the SecureFast switch firmware images to your VLAN switches using SPECTRUMs Application view or the tool of your choice.

Upgrading VLAN Manager Software and Firmware

If you are upgrading an existing VLAN Manager installation, proceed with the instructions below. If this is a new installation, follow the installation procedures provided in Chapter 2, UNIX Installation or Chapter 3, Windows NT Installation. 1. 2. 3. Stop the VLANServer. Save your existing database using the Save Database button on the VLAN Manager Control Panel. You can name the saved file whatever you want. Copy the database file to a directory location other than the installation area. Should a problem occur with your upgrade, you can use this file to restore your database following the upgrade. Follow the procedure provided in Chapter 2, UNIX Installation or Chapter 3, Windows NT Installation for the version of VLAN Manager you are installing, then return here and continue with Step 6. If for some reason your installation is unsuccessful, you can restore your database using the instructions in VLAN Manager Users Guide (Restoring the VLANServer Database in Chapter 2). Start the VLANServer and VLAN Client. Download the SecureFast firmware supported by the newly installed release of VLAN Manager to each SecureFast switch in the domain. Refer to Chapter 4, Downloading SecureFast VLAN Switch Firmware.

VLAN Manager Installation Guide

Chapter 2
UNIX Installation
This chapter describes the steps involved in retrieving the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager software from the CDROM and installing it on a UNIX workstation running Solaris.

Overview
The general procedure for installing VLAN Manager on your UNIX workstation is as follows: 1. 2. 3. Check the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Release Notes to see if your workstation meets VLAN Manager hardware and software requirements. Log onto your workstation as root. Run the VLAN Installation utility to extract and install VLAN Manager, the related documentation, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The following sections contain step-by-step instructions for these procedures.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Before attempting the installation, you should be familiar with the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Release Notes which specify current hardware and software requirements, including operating system patches needed, for the platforms VLAN Manager supports. The release notes also describe new features and identify any known anomalies associated with the installation process. The release notes are available on Cabletrons SPECTRUM Manuals web site at http://www.cabletron.com.

9031997-09 2-1

Logging on as root (UNIX Systems)

Logging on as root (UNIX Systems)

You must be able to log on with root privileges to perform the installation on a UNIX system. This is necessary to accommodate current operations as well as planned functionality. On some platforms, root privileges are required for the installation software to be able to query the host system and evaluate available resources in terms of VLAN Manager requirements. Also, the custom installation scripts that are invoked by the installation program to install certain components must perform operations that require root privileges.

CAUTION

When you log on as root, do so by using the su - command. Using the su command without the - option may adversely affect the user environment.

Extracting SPECTRUM VLAN Manager

The SPECTRUM VLAN Manager CD-ROM contains the software for installing the VLAN Manager application, the documentation, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. The first part of the installation process extracts the VLAN Manager software from the CD-ROM using one of the following scenarios: Local installation utilizes a CD-ROM device on the same workstation on which VLAN Manager is being installed. Remote installation utilizes a CD-ROM device on a workstation other than the one on which VLAN Manager is being installed. In this guide, the target workstation refers to the workstation on which you are installing VLAN Manager. The following sections cover UNIX platform installations from CDROM, providing instructions for both local and remote installation scenarios.

Local CD-ROM Extraction

Follow the procedure below when the CD-ROM drive from which you are installing is physically attached to the system on which you are installing VLAN Manager. 1. 2. 3. Insert the VLAN Manager CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Log onto the workstation as root, using the su - command. Check to see if the /cdrom/cdrom0 directory path exists on your system by issuing the following command: cd /cdrom/cdrom0

UNIX Installation 2-2

Extracting SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Local CD-ROM Extraction where 0 is zero. If the directory exists, go on to step 4. If it does not exist, create it by issuing the following command: mkdir -p /cdrom/cdrom0 where 0 is zero. then cd to the newly created directory and go on to step 4. 4. Issue the ls command to see if the CD-ROM drive is mounted. If the files are listed, go on to step 5. If there are no files listed, perform the following commands: cd / mount -r -F hsfs /dev/sr0 /cdrom/cdrom0 then go on to step 5.

NOTE

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SPECTRUM-INTEGRATED VLAN MANAGER USERS: If you are installing the SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager, skip the next step and go on to step 6. Performing step 5 will cause your installation to proceed incorrectly.

5.

Create an installation directory for VLAN manager. For example: mkdir /usr/VLAN_Mgr

NOTE

This step is not required for VLAN Manager software release upgrades, only new installations.

6.

Navigate into the VLAN Manager install directory: Standalone version: cd /usr/VLAN_Mgr

NOTE

If upgrading VLAN Manager software, navigate to the existing VLAN Manager install area.

SPECTRUM version: cd /<SPECTRUM_area> (where <SPECTRUM_area> is the pathway to your SPECTRUM directory)

Extracting SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Remote CD-ROM Extraction

You are now ready to start the installation. Go on to Installing SPECTRUM VLAN Manager on UNIX.

Remote CD-ROM Extraction

CAUTION

Although installations employing remote devices are supported, the installation of VLAN Manager software into a directory that is NFS-mounted to another file system is NOT supported. Cabletron strongly recommends against this type of installation, not only because it may fail, but also because it may adversely affect the behavior of installed products. We recommend and support installation into local filesystems only.

Follow the procedure below when the CD-ROM drive from which you are installing is physically attached to a system (CD-ROM host workstation) other than the system where VLAN Manager is being installed (target workstation). This procedure assumes that you are seated at the CD-ROM host workstation and are installing to a remote target workstation. Some steps may not apply if you are seated at the target workstation and installing from a remote CD-ROM host workstation. 1. 2. 3. Insert the VLAN Manager CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Log onto the CD-ROM host workstation as root, using the su - command. Check to see if the /cdrom/cdrom0 directory path exists on your system by issuing the following command: cd /cdrom/cdrom0 where 0 is zero. If the directory exists, go on to step 4. If it does not exist, create it by issuing the following command: mkdir -p /cdrom/cdrom0 where 0 is zero. then cd to the newly created directory and go on to step 4.

If there are no files listed, perform the following commands: cd / mount -r -F hsfs /dev/sr0 /cdrom/cdrom0 then go on to step 5. 5. Prepare to export the CD-ROM filesystem by adding the following entry to the /etc/ dfs/dfstab file: share -F nfs -o ro /cdrom/cdrom0 If a dfstab file does not already exist, create the file using the entry above and then reboot your system before proceeding.

NOTE

6. 7.

At the command line, type exportfs -a Set host access for the target workstation by typing: xhost + <target workstation> where <target workstation> is the name or IP address of the workstation on which you are installing VLAN Manager.

8. 9.

Telnet to the target workstation as root, using the su - command. Type mkdir /cdrom_rem to create a directory for the remote CD mount point.

10. Set the target workstations DISPLAY variable to have the Installation Control Panel appear at the CD-ROM host workstations display. From the C shell: setenv DISPLAY <CD_host>:0 From the Bourne or Korn shells: DISPLAY=<CD_host>:0.0; export DISPLAY where <CD_host> is the hostname given to the CD-ROM host workstation.

Preparing Your Windows NT System

9031997-09 3-1

Preparing Your Windows NT System for Installation

for Installation
If this is the first time you have installed VLAN Manager on your Windows NT system, you need to configure your system first. These steps are described below. If you dont want to run the VLANServer and VLAN Manager as Administrator, you may wish to create a user with Administrator privileges first. If you have already done an installation of VLAN Manager on Windows NT, you can skip this section and go on to the next section, Installing SPECTRUM VLAN Manager on Windows NT.

Converting Your File System to NTFS

Your systems hard drive must be configured with an NTFS-formatted partition where VLAN Manager can be installed. The instructions below include conversion procedures for reformatting your entire hard drive to an NTFS format. You can run this conversion without causing any damage to, or loss of, data. Once converted, an NTFS file system cannot be converted back to DOS (FAT). If you want to retain a DOS file system, refer to your Windows NT documentation and create two partitions, formatting one as DOS and the other as NTFS. Do this before installing VLAN Manager. In the following procedures, the capitalization style of the names of directories and files is as close as possible to what appears on your screen. If you use alternative methods to perform the procedures, or if you have customized the capitalization style on your system, the capitalization you see on your screen may vary slightly from the instructions.

NOTE

To convert your file system to NTFS, follow these steps: 1. Determine if the file system on your hard drive where you are installing VLAN Manager is formatted for NTFS. a. b. Start Windows NT Explorer, right click on the drive on which you plan to install VLAN Manager, and select Properties from the drop-down menu. Under the General tab, look at the File system format. If it does not say NTFS, perform steps 2 and 3. Otherwise, go on to the next section, Creating an Emergency Recovery Disk (ERD).

NOTE

These instructions assume Windows NT is installed on drive C. If Windows NT is installed on another drive on your system, substitute the appropriate drive identifier in the instructions that follow.

Chapter 4
Downloading SecureFast VLAN Switch Firmware
This chapter describes retrieving and downloading firmware to the SecureFast VLAN switches on your network.

This version of VLAN Manager is designed to work with compatible SecureFast firmware, which is distributed separately from the VLAN Manager CD-ROM. Refer to your SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Release Notes and SecureFast firmware release notes to ensure that your VLAN Manager software and SecureFast firmware versions are compatible.

Retrieving a Firmware Image

SecureFast VLAN switch firmware images are distributed separately from the VLAN Manager software. Prior to downloading SecureFast VLAN firmware images to your network switches, move them to a TFTP server on your network. Each type of switch being used on your network requires a unique firmware image. This means that you must retrieve a firmware image for each switch type.

Downloading Firmware
You can download SecureFast VLAN firmware to the switches on your network using any one of the following methods: TFTP Download Application, launched from the VLAN Managers Control Panel, the VLAN Managers Tools menu or, for users of the SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager, from the SPECTRUM Device Models Application view. The instructions for using the TFTP Download Application launched from the Control Panel are in this chapter.

TFTP Services, launched as a standalone application. Refer to the SPECTRUM Element Manager Tools Guide for instructions.

Using the TFTP Download Application

Before you download SecureFast VLAN firmware to your switches, make sure your network has a workstation set up to facilitate a file transfer (configured to run TFTP). Use this workstation to download the new firmware image file to your VLAN switches. The TFTP Download Application provides a point and click interface for downloading firmware. The VLAN Managers Control Panel (Figure 4-1) provides a TFTP Download button for accessing the application.

Downloading Firmware Downloading

NOTE

If your switches have been previously downloaded with a SecureFast VLAN Switch firmware image, you must establish a connection between the TFTP Server and each switch prior to downloading a new firmware image. Do this by executing a ping from the TFTP Server to each switch.

Downloading
To download SecureFast VLAN firmware to your switches, follow these steps: 1. Click TFTP Download on the VLAN Managers Control Panel. The TFTP Download Parameters dialog box (Figure 4-2) appears.

NOTE

If you are already using the VLAN Manager and want to download to a specific switch, you can select TFTP Download from the Tools menu instead of using the Control Panel. If you use this method, you bypass the TFTP Download Parameters dialog box.

NOTE

The SPECTRUM-integrated version of VLAN Manager does not include the VLAN Manager Control Panel. Users of the SPECTRUM-integrated version should navigate to the Application view, select the CtDownLoadApp icon, and choose Download Application from the Icon Subviews menu.

Specify the full directory pathway, including the filename extension. Choose Download Then Reboot (or choose Download Only and reboot the switch later).

10. Click the Start Download button to start the download. 11. Check the Download Error and Status fields to verify the success of the download. Also, if the download is successful, the Filename in the Current Image should show the new firmware image filename, and the Flash Count should be incremented by one.

Configuring Switches for VLAN Operation

Cabletron switches are not shipped with SecureFast VLAN firmware. Without the SecureFast VLAN firmware, you can ping a switch but VLAN Discovery process will not recognize it.

NOTE

To work in a SPECTRUM VLAN environment, each switchs Community Names Table must have an entry, which allows R/W access and matches the community string used for switch discovery in the VLAN Manager. Refer to the section on Discovering VLAN Domains in the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Users Guide.

Configuring Switches for VLAN Operation Clearing NVRAM

Clearing NVRAM
On the Cabletron SmartSwitch 2200 and SmartSwitch 6000 switches, you can also clear NVRAM via local management.

NOTE

To clear NVRAM, follow these steps: 1. Pull the SecureFast VLAN switch from the chassis and toggle switch 7, the NVRAM switch (on most switches, switch 7 on the dip switch near the top of the board). Refer to the installation guide for your specific switch hardware for more information. Return the switch to the chassis.

2.

Setting the Switch IP Address and Operatonal Mode

To set the IP address on your SecureFast VLAN switch, follow these steps: 1. 2. Access the switch Local Management via the front panel COM port. Navigate to the Switch Configuration screen and set the IP address. Refer to the Local Management Guide for your specific switch hardware for information on setting the switch IP address. If you want community names other than public, navigate to the Community Names screen and enter community names. Verify that the operational mode is set for SecureFast VLAN. (Some firmware (e.g. 802.1Q and 802.1D) defaults to an operational mode other than SecureFast VLAN.) If necessary, toggle the mode to set the switch for SecureFast VLAN. Save the configuration. Exit from Local Management.

3. 4.

5. 6.

Once you have installed SecureFast VLAN Manager, you can start it, discover your switches, and begin to configure VLANs. Refer to the SPECTRUM VLAN Manager Users Guide for more information.
