Bank Streets Prayer Garden A Thrilling Encounter with God.

How can you let the beauty of creation lead you to worship the Creator? The more a truly reverent person knows about a flower or an insect, the more overwhelmed he isgiving the reverent saint a burning heart, a thrilling encounter with God. - Warren Wiersbe, Real Worship we manufacture a thrilling encounter with God? The above implies that such an encounter with God is likely to happen in Gods creation. When you think about it, gardens play a key role in the Bible ... human life began in a garden, and Jesus sought a garden to pray for his cup of suffering to pass. Bank Streets Prayer Garden was designed to invite such an encounter; of having our eyes, ears, and spirits opened to God in ways that dont occur indoors. The peaceful setting of a prayer garden allows Gods gentle breeze of communications to be realized. The Prayer Garden is a beautiful, blessed place, and I invite you to make a visit; the sights and sounds are so peaceful and full of beauty and truth. Gods creation (nature) overwhelms us with an encounter with God. In turn, our encounter with God compels us to care for his creation. A prayer garden is a place of peace and serenity. a place for spiritual communion with God. It's a place of meditation amidst nature's beauty. As with any prayer space, the importance is not so much in how it looks as in how you use it ... allowing the beauty of creation to inspire your prayers. Listen for Gods voice in the sounds of nature. Examine the small things growing around you and consider the wonder of Gods attention to detail. Quiet your mind by concentrating on the travels of an ant or a ladybug crawling along the stem of a flower. Rejoice in creation while you spend time with the creator. PRAYER: O Lord, when I gaze upon the beauty of your creation, I get only a tiny glimpse of your own beauty. Nevertheless, thank you for making this world so aesthetically wonderful, and for giving me the ability to delight in it. Help me to let worldly splendor of all kinds point my heart to you. Amen

Celebrating Five Years of Pastor and People Working Together for the Lord Wow! Has it been five years already? We
have just completed five years of service at The Historic Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA and were not tired yet! God has truly blessed us with a tremendously successful transition over the past five years. In fulfilling our vision of connecting the church to the community and the world; through service, mission, outreach, and the love of Christ, we are moving in the right direction. Our goals are to expand our outreach and mission efforts, while serving Gods people with the unfailing love of Christ. Our outreach ministries are thriving and growing strong, and we are definitely making a connection with our community and the world. Over the past several years, we have had more people join our church, than in previous years and many of them live right in our community. There is a great deal of energy surging in the spirit of our church membership and we are prepared to do far greater works for the Lord. People that weve connected with are saying that they see a dynamic change at Bank Street; more uplifting services, more vibrant ministries, more young people and families in praise and worship; and the best is yet to come! He has done great things in our church and we have an even brighter future ahead of us. Through tough times and a tough economy, we have still remained faithful to Gods cause and mission. God is doing a new thing at Bank Street, and this is only the beginning. Thank you Bank Street for making our first five years of service great! To God be the glory, great things He has done!

surroundings made the perfect setting for the Bank

Street family to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of our pastor , Dr. Joseph Lee, Jr., and the First Family, 1st Lady Kimberly, Jonathan, Joshua, and Joseph. As guests entered Henderson Hall they were treated to tables and chairs covered in white, with bronze colored accents, precisely arranged place settings, and artistic centerpieces. Mistress of Ceremony, Deacon Pamela Riddick began her comments proclaiming the Pastor and 1st Family to be a triple blessing ... God has blessed us with a package deal, and we are here to say Thank You and Happy 5th Anniversary. One by one, local, community, and church leaders, friends and family took turns at the microphone describing their special relationship with Pastor Lee and his family. Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed entertainment from the inspiring singing of Tim Carr & PRAIZE; featuring our very own Office Manager, Minister Paulette Hill. Pastor Lee acknowledged his appreciation of the church family by saying how blessed he was to be serving at Bank Street; I am always humbled by the love and generosity I see time and time again among the people at this church. And I pray that they know how thankful 1st Lady Kim, the boys and I are for all the love youve shown us. In addition to gifts from various church ministries, Pastor Lee also received a Plaque of Appreciation, and an Apple IPAD.

A shining star is a great way to describe DeiYauna

Davis ... shinning bright to see, what she can truly be. If youve been around Bank Street, you have surely seen her bright smile and ball of energy ... shes a Praise Dancer, Usher, choir member, pulpit participant, and all-around front person for the Youth Ministry. WHEW! Shes also active in her school. This past summer, the high school Freshman decided to spend her Tuesday mornings working in Bank Streets Food Pantry, giving back. Once you step foot into the pantry on a Tuesday and see how hectic it is ... packing bags, stocking shelves, and cleaning up the building, you automatically want to get involved said DeiYauna. I moved from position to position, and I finally found the right one for me, which was working the food lines outside while I congregating with our friends and family, one of which was her grandmother. In summing it all up, DeiYauna said, I had a lot of memorable times at the Pantry. Working with the pantry, I have gained a lot of maturity, the mindset of being a humble young lady, and the true definition of not being lazy. I also interacted with some of the greatest people alive. DeiYauna enjoys reading, writing, and shopping, and she doesnt just have a big heart, she also has big dreams of working on hearts, when she graduates from Cornel University and becomes a cardiologist. A special thank you to Deacon Art Jarrett for giving me the opportunity to work with the pantry. It's wonderful when a young person does things like this on their own. Its the kind of work that stays with them for the rest of their lives. The important message to teens is to get out there and show their support in any way possible because every bit counts and you might learn about a cause you didnt know about in the past and will leave you with a satisfying feeling of having been a part of making the world a better place. Community service is a very rewarding experience. DeiYauna is a great example of what it means to be Christ-like in her walk with the Lord; to serve and to help those in need with her time and resources.

Bank Streets food pantry serves over 100 people each week and give out over 5,000 bags of food each year. Located inside the Pantry is also a Clothing Closet, where clients have access to gently used clothes donated by the congregation. The Food Pantry is open each Wednesday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm If you're interested in volunteering, contact Deacon Arthur Jarrett.

End Of Summer 2013: Celebrating Community

Connecting the church to the community, is not just Bank Streets Vision Statement, its a way of life, and the End of Summer Festival was a clear cut example. Members throughout Oakmont and surrounding communities came out and made the 2013 festival one to remember. In addition to the free food (hotdogs, hamburgers, ribs, chips, soda, etc.), Bank Streets members purchased more than 150 book bags filled with school supplies for the community children returning to school. ... through service, mission, outreach, and the love of Christ!

One of the most important activities going on in the life of Bank Street is our ongoing Raise The Roof Project. The structural integrity of our worship edifice and Jubilee Center depends on us stopping the intrusion of rain water. If you take a look at several spots inside Bank Street it is obvious that there is more than blessings coming from above. And the sooner we fix it, the better! The Raise The Roof Project has been underway for several months now, and were still encouraging members to make a commitment to the project. The good Lord has enabled Bank Street to survive for 173 years. Its now our responsibility, as members, to take care of this gift so that it is available to those who follow us.
