SUMMARY
Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Rancchoddas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) are three engineering students who share a room in a hostel at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in India. While Farhan and Raju are average students from modest backgrounds, Rancho is from a rich family. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer, but has joined engineering college to fulfill his father's wish. Raju on the other hand wants to uplift his family fortunes. Rancho is a wealthy genius who studies for the sheer joy of it. However, Rancho's passion is for knowledge and taking apart and building machines rather than the conventional obsession of the other students with exam ranks. With his different approach Rancho incurs the wrath of dean of college, Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) (Boman Irani). Rancho irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unorthodox answers, and confronts ViruS after fellow student Joy Lobo hangs himself in his dormitory room. Joy had requested an extension on his major project on compassionate 3 groundshis father had suffered a strokebut ViruS refused, saying that he himself was completely unmoved by his own son's accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho denounces the rat race, dog-eat-dog, mindless rote learning mentality of the institution, blaming it for Lobo's death. Threatened by Rancho's talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an "idiot" and attempts on a number of occasions to destroy his friendship with Farhan and Raju, warning them and their parents to steer clear of Rancho. In contrast, ViruS model student is Chatur Ramalingam or "Silencer", (Omi Vaidya) who sees a high rank at the prestigious college as his ticket to higher social status, corporate power, and therefore wealth. Chatur conforms to the expectations of the system. Rancho humiliates Chatur, who is awarded the honour of making a speech at an award ceremony, by substituting obscenities into the text, which has been written by the librarian. As expected, Chatur mindlessly memorises the speech, without noticing that anything is amiss, partly aided by his lack of knowledge on Hindi. His speech becomes the laughing stock of the audience, infuriating the authorities in the process.

Meanwhile, Rancho also falls in love with ViruS' medical student daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) when he, Raju and Farhan crash her sister's wedding banquet in order to get a free meal, in the process further infuriating ViruS. Meanwhile, Rancho also falls in love with ViruS' medical student daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) when he, Raju and Farhan crash her sister's wedding banquet in order to get a free meal, in the process further infuriating ViruS. Meanwhile, the three students continue to anger ViruS, although Rancho continues to come first in every exam, while Chatur is always second, and Farhan and Raju are inevitably in the last two positions. The tensions come to a head when the three friends, who are already drunk, break into ViruS's house at night to allow Rancho to propose to Pia, and then urinate on a door inside the compound before running away when ViruS senses intruders. The next day, ViruS threatens to expel Raju lest he talks on the other two. Unable to choose between betraying his friend or letting down his family, Raju jumps out of the 3rd floor window and lands on a courtyard, but after extensive care from Pia and his roommates, awakes from a coma. The experience has changed Farhan and Raju, and they adopt Rancho's outlook. Farhan decides to pursue his love of photography, while Raju takes an unexpected approach for an interview for a corporate job. He attends in plaster and a wheelchair and gives a series of non-conformal and frank answers. However, ViruS is unsympathetic and vows to make the final exam as hard as possible so that Raju is unable to graduate. Pia hears him and angrily confronts him, and when ViruS gives the same ruthless reply he gives to his students, she denounces him in the same way that Rancho did over the suicide of Lobo. Pia reveals that Viru's son and her brother was not killed in an accident but committed suicide in front of a train and left a letter because ViruS had forced him to pursue a career in engineering over his love for literature; ViruS always mentioned that he unsympathetically failed his son on the ICE entrance exams over and over to every new intake of ICE students. After this, Pia walks out on the family home, and takes ViruS's spare keys with her. She tells Rancho of the exam, and he and Farhan break into ViruS's office and steals the exam and give it to Raju, who with his new-found attitude, is unconcerned with the prospect of failing, and refuses to cheat and throws the paper away. However, ViruS catches the trio and expels them on the spot. However, they earn a reprieve when Viru's pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labour at the same time. A

heavy storm cuts all power and traffic, and Pia is still in self-imposed exile, so she instructs Rancho to deliver the baby in the college common room via VOIP, after Rancho restores power using car batteries and a power inverter that Rancho had dreamed up and ViruS had mocked. Rancho then delivers the baby with the help of a cobbled-together Vacuum extractor. After the baby is apparently stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it. ViruS reconciles with Rancho and his friends and allows them to take their final exams and they graduate. Rancho comes first and is awarded ViruS's pen, which the professor had been keeping for decades before finding a brilliant enough student to gift it to. Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years after Chatur vowed revenge on Rancho for embarrassing him at the speech night and promised to become more successful than Rancho a decade later. Having lost contact with Rancho, who disappeared during the graduation party and went into seclusion, Raju and Farhan begin a journey to find him. They are joined by Chatur, now a wealthy and successful businessman, who joins them, brazenly confident that he has surpassed Rancho. Chatur is also looking to seal a deal with a famous scientist and prospective business associate named Phunsukh Wangdu. Chatur sees Wangdu, who has hundreds of patents, as his ticket to further social prestige. When they find Rancho's house in Shimla, they walk into his father's funeral, and find a completely different Rancho (Jaaved Jaffrey). After accusing the new man of stealing their friend's identity and profiting from his intellect, the host pulls a gun on them, but Farhan and Raju turn the tables by seizing the father's ashes and threatening to flush them down the toilet. The householder capitulates and says that their friend was a destitute servant boy who loved learning, while he, the real Rancho, was a lazy wealthy child who disliked study, so the family agreed to let the servant boy study in Rancho's place instead of labouring. In return, the real Rancho would pocket the qualifications and the benefits thereof, while the impersonator would sever all contact with the world and start a new life. The real Rancho reveals that his impersonator is now a schoolteacher in Ladakh. Raju and Farhan then find Pia, and take her from her wedding day to Suhas by performing the same tricks with his material possessions, and having Raju turn up to the ceremony disguised as the groom and eloping with Pia in public. When they arrive in Ladakh, they see a group of enthusiastic Ladakhi children who are motivated by love of knowledge. Pia and the fake Rancho rekindle their love, while Chatur mocks and abuses Rancho the

schoolteacher. He asks Rancho to sign on a DECLARATION OF DEFEAT document. And sees that Rancho is using the pen which ViruS had gifted him. Chatur snatches the pen from Rancho and starts to move back. When Rancho's friends ask what his real name is, he reveals that his real name is Phunsukh Wangdu and phones Chatur, who has turned his back, and tells him that he will not be able to sign the deal with him because he has his pen. He asks Chatur to turn around meet his prospective business partner. Chatur is horrified and falls to his knees, accepts his defeat and continues to plead his case with Phunsukh to establish the business relationship he was after. This movie not only questions our education system but also the motive of doing higher education. Now-a-days, students are pursuing Engineering and MBA as they want give more importance to money than their real interests and strengths in life. It is time for our educators also to wake up, as some of them transform the most interesting subjects into painful experiences. Parents sometimes also ruin the childhood of their kids by trying to achieve their personal dreams through their children. To make them achieve things, they pressurize them which sometimes to leads to suicide.

College Life .. College, they cross paths with various characters. The
Dean of the College, Professor Viru "Virus" Sahastrabuddhe is an overachiever, having taught himself to write with both hands to save time, among other skills. He has his own idea of the perfect student and routinely patronizes students who do not meet his criteria. This comes down to most of the students at the College. Fellow student, Chatur "Silencer" Ramalingam, provides the comedic element of the film. Chatur is ambitious and believes that textbook memorization of engineering concepts is the way to success. He considers himself superior to others at the university, taking shortcuts to impress the Dean. His efforts often make him the butt of jokes and pranks among the trio, one of which earns him the nickname "Silencer". Of course, no film is complete without romance, and this is provided by the appearance of Pia, Professor's Viru's beautiful and intelligent daughter, with whom Rancho falls in love. In the middle of all these, they crash a wedding, deliver a baby on a makeshift operating table, settle a bet, fall in love and have hopes and dreams broken, all in Bollywood style. The film draws on themes of filial piety, obedience, friendship and the importance of following your heart. It also subtly hints that perhaps while we study, not all of us learn. The trio live, laugh and love with each other while discovering more about themselves. As usual, there is dancing, music, drama, a catchy phrase and soaring breath-taking scenery. The film ends with several twists and leaves you inspired to take a closer look at your life.

The search for Rancho.. Raju and Farhan have tried to find Rancho for five years with no results; with Chatur's help, they travel to the Chhanchad estate in Shimla, where they find a completely different man: the real Ranchhoddas Chhanchad (Jaaved Jaffrey). They coerce the man into revealing the truth: their friend was an orphaned servant boy who loved learning, unlike the man they encountered, the real Rancho. After seeing the boy's intelligence, Rancho's father arranged for the servant boy to go to college and earn a degree in Rancho's name. The real Rancho reveals that their friend is now a schoolteacher inLadakh. On the way, the three rescue Pia from an unhappy wedding, over Chatur's objections: he wants to get the trip finished quickly, because he is in a hurry to seal a business deal with Phunsukh Wangdu, a scientist with hundreds of patents. In Ladakh, Raju and Farhan find villagers working with gadgets that show the stamp of Rancho's ingenuity, and learn from their friend MM that Rancho has all of Farhan's photography/research books, reads Raju's engineering blog every day, and kept Pia's helmet. The three friends reunite and Pia and Rancho rekindle their love, while Chatur mocks Rancho until Rancho reveals his true name: Phunsukh Wangdu. Chatur, mortified, accepts his defeat and pleads with Phunsukh to forgive him and accept his company's contract. Phunsukh, Pia, Farhan and Raju run laughing into the distance as Chatur begs Rancho to sign the contract and save Chatur's job.

REACTION What value systems are being portrayed and compared in this film? Education Should Inspire and Not Despair Current education system is developing pressures on students head to the extent that some students end up by quitting. Basically, this movie covers the pressure that the students of higher education are facing because of high end expectation from their parents, colleges and faculties. One of the important issues covered in this movie is student's suicide due to pressure and failure in fulfilling the expectations. As such kind of incidents are not good for the society, country and families. Knowledge cant be imparted at the cost of life. It is time for educational institutions to wake up and develop such methods of imparting education which creates curiosity and inspire the students to develop their talent and reach new heights. We are aware that some institutions are doing this but there are also other institutions that make education a living hell to many students. Instead of creating a learning environment they apt to generate an environment full of pressure, building wrong impressions from the students. Thats why we sometimes think school is punishment, matter of factly. It is time for our educators also to wake up, as some of them transform the most interesting subjects into painful experiences. Parents sometimes also ruin the childhood of their kids by trying to achieve their personal dreams through their children. To achieve this, they coerce them which further move them towards insurgence. In this race, everybody in the system misses or skips the importance of knowledge and its practical usability in life and work. The essence of this movie is that instead of running behind degree and marks, we should focus on getting knowledge and developing skills through knowledge. This will develop excellence in students and make them eligible to do their work more effectively and efficiently. -M.A

REACTION 3 Idiots is a story of true friendship, leadership and fulfilment of dreams. This is one of the best movies I have seen. I gained a lot of lessons in this masterpiece Rancho, one of the main characters in the movie, is undeniably a great person, a great friend, a great leader and a great student. Though he did nasty things, he still done it for a good purpose. He never thought of his own sake. He was never selfish. He possesses a lot of qualities of an effective leader. Because of his principles in life, he was able to set the lives of the people around him. The part of the movie that really amazed me is the moment wherein they have to perform a vacuum delivery. Rancho really did well in making the students coordinate and make the delivery successful. That was really stunning This just crossed my mind, if all people will be like Rancho, I guess the whole world will be better but I know it will be hard because Chatur and Virus exist in real world. They represent the challenges all people are facing every day. They also represent those people who will do everything just to let you down. Competition is very usual in every field of life but everyone can be Rancho. We should just have a concrete vision enclosed with competency and a strong desire of reaching every goal you have set. Make your passion your profession is one the quote from the movie that really marked on my mind. You cant accomplish anything if you cant put your heart on your work. You should conquer fear to be able to achieve your dreams. This movie helped a lot in making me understand the qualities and characteristic of a good leader. This also inspires me to be a better student.

Cinematography:
The cinematography of the movie 3 Idiots is well fitted to the story. Every time there is a musical production, the colors of the environment and the decors are appropriate to the message they want to imply. For example when they are singing aal izz well the crowd are really happy, all of them are in a positive attitude just like what the song says, all is well. After singing aal izz well, they saw Joy committed suicide then the music, emotions and the tempo changed and gave a dramatic feeling to the scene. The story is in Farhans point of view. He tells the story of Rancho, his friend. Overall the cinematography of the movie was excellent. It gave the viewers a clear message about the story of life and friendship. The editing of the movie is well coordinated. The story line has a little mystery about Ranchos real identity but it was made perfectly clear in the end. The movie has a parallel style of editing. It is when Rancho tries to steal the test questionnaires while Professor Virus walks towards his office which did not really happened at the same time. Overall, they did a good job on the movie editing. It gives the viewers a chance to enjoy the movie because of its exciting arrangement of scenes.

Musicality: Of the film is one thing that the international film also found balance it was that it hard to imagine the film without the melody or the music

Moral Lesson.. many student now a days are attending colleges not with the degree they wanted to take up but with the degree they should take up primarily because of going to have when they graduate from the certain degree this is better reality. Yes you may be successful but youll never happy colleges many student learn because they pressure themselves to learn some times, we study and pressure ourselves to eventually learn what we have studies so that well pass exams, well get passing marks but the more we pressure our selves the leaser we learn. The studying is not about the ranking its more about you will become when you finish your studies everyone wants to be the best who doesnt right each one of us wants to excel higher than our classmates than our friends but when you fail when that person gets higher than us the feelings worst Ive always the ranking was important being number one is what important and becoming two is just like being nothing at all. However that only good in the college in reality, rank does not define who you are ranks, does not label how good you are and rank does not determine your success

CHARACTERS Aamir Khan as Ranchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad/Chhote/Phunsukh Wangdu One of the group of the three friends in the university. He went missing and his two friends traveled across India looking for him. Rancho, as a student, was intelligent and had brilliant methods to be successful and content in life. He fought against the wrong system of teaching and was often punished for this. Also he is in a romantic relationship with Pia throughout the movie. In the end of the film, he is shown to be a famous scientist and prospective business associate.

Kareena Kapoor as Pia Sahasrabuddhe Viru "Virus" Sahasrabuddhe's youngest daughter who pursues being a doctor and Rancho's (Phunsukh Wangdu) love interest. She was engaged to another person but gets attracted to Aamir Khan's character in the movie.

R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi the film's narrator and a friend of Rancho and Raju. His father wants him to be an engineer despite his love for wildlife photography. Towards the climax of the movie it is shown that he convinces his parents about his love for photography and embarks on the journey for the passion of wildlife photography with the help of his friends.

Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi the third member in the gang of Farhan and Rancho. In his college days, he came from an impoverished family with a mother who's a retired school teacher and a paralyzed father who was a postman. His sister is unmarried in the film during his college days. In the present day, he is shown to be a settled married man in Delhi.

Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam better known as "Silencer". Omi plays a nerdy character born in Uganda and completed his schooling in Pondicherry. He believes in mindless memorizing and also sneers Rancho's ideas just like Virus. It is heavily implied that he was called Silencer because he popped "bengali baba's" pills and farts, blaming the output on others, plus cramming on exams by handling out pornographic magazines to the fellow students in order for him to rise his grades. After being insulted due to his speech, he swears retaliation and vows to be more successful. In the present part of the film, he is shown to be a very successful person holding the vice president position of a company. He mocks Rancho into signing a declaration defeat only to learn that Rancho is actually his client, Phunsukh Wangdu and later accepts the fact that Rancho is more successful than him. Vaidya was chosen by Hirani for the role mainly because of his dialogue memorization and his typical slang.
