DYNOS AND DRIVES

DYNOPERFORM
EDDY CURRENT DYNAMOMETERS

"The best choice of dynamometer world-wide" AVL EC dynamometers are based on the eddy current principle. A direct current to the coils creates a magnetic field within the cradled body. When the rotor rotates the field density varies and eddy currents are induced in the surface of the stator rings surrounding the rotor. The magnetic field lines of the eddy currents are directly opposed to the exciter field and have a braking effect on the rotor. This braking effect is proportional to the excitation current. The torque, which is thus applied to the cradled housing, is measured using a strain gauge load cell. A digital speed pick-up is used to measure the rotational speed. From these values the power of the test engine is calculated. This power is converted into heat and taken off by the cooling water which flows through the stator rings.

Areas of Usage / Applications

Research & Development Excellent control characteristics mean that a single EC dynamometer is suitable for testing a wide range of engine sizes and types (gasoline/diesel). EC dynamometers are employed to test the function and endurance of practically every engine component from the development phase to series production (e.g. bearings, belts (fan/timing), catalytic converters, ECUs, exhaust systems, filters, injection systems, lubricants, pistons, piston rings, plugs (glow/spark), pumps, radiators, seals, starters, turbo chargers etc.) Suitable for steady-state and transient test applications Quality Control Validation of engine performance Verification of fuel consumption, emissions etc. Production End-of-line "hot test" to validate manufacturing standards
