Remarks:
Responded on Southbound side of Westside Hwy. Parked apparatus on West Street.
Reported to command post and was assigned to North Tower. Chief at command post
gave Lt. Desperito Fire Warden phone with instructions to call command post when we
reached 11th & 22nd floors. At 22nd floor we reported to Port Authority Command PostAt
this point we felt building shake.
OPERATIONS:
Port Authority told us to evacuate. We thought there had been an explosion in Tower 1. E-
1 & e-16 started down the stairs together with Port Autority Personnel. We came across
an elderly woman named Josephine on about the 8th floor. At this point Lt. Desperito
ordered us to evacuate the building while he stayed with P.A. Supervisor to assist
Josephine in evacuating. As we were exiting lobby of Tower one we assisted in removing
an elderly gentleman and a heavyset woman from the lobby. Once outside we were
heading northwest when building came down, (cont pg. 2)

As building was coming down we were blown around by blast of wind and hit with debris. We
became seperated as we made our way out of the dust and smoke. Members of E-1 regrouped at
the staging area on West street. At this point we were told Lt. Desperito had been killed in the
collapse.

High Rise 1 Crushed; Universal C.D-73 for all members
OPERATIONS:
Engine 3 & High Rise 1 responded to initial plane hitting North Tower.(1) Eng.3 and HR -1
responded on 7th Ave. to Canal and than down the West Side Hwy. Both Units in West
Street when 2nd airliner Struck South tower or building 2. Ordered by Chief Ganci to
move apparatus out of North Bound lanes of West Street so as to set up a conga line of
ambulances. Ordered by Chief Downey to remain fast at staging area with High Rise 1.
Members set up High Rise under the North Pedestrian Walkway. Eng.3 had members
remain fast in front of World Financial Center Building 3, about 150 feet North of actual
staging area , a driveway into The Financial Center. Lt. Walsh Eng. 3 reported in to BC
Downey. Chief Downey was issuing orders for 3 engines and 3 trucks and a Battalion
Chief to utilize the North Pedestrian bridge into the North Tower. At this moment is when
the South Tower began to collapse. Myself and many other members began running
through the garage of the Financial Center building, and finding stairs on the West sideof
the building , came up and out of building in a mall area near the Battery Park Marina. I
Lt. Walsh began to search for my members who I had previously staged North of the
staging area. All of my members were able to escape to Vessy Street during the South
Tower Collapse. In the interim of the time I escaped from the collapse and thus seperated
from my members, they continued to assist civillians out of the Financial Center. About
20 minutes after the initial collapse is when I had found all of my men on Vessey Street.
At this time I ordered my members and anyone else near by to begin moving West toward
the Hudson. Shortly thereafter the North Tower Collapsed. We were odered by Chief
Raynus to move North to Chambers Street, to a 2nd staging area. Chief Nardone in
Charge. Ordered back down to Vessey Street and to report in to Chief Fellini. Ordered to
stand fast. After building 7 came down operated under DC Hay with Handlines on rubble
near Barclay Street. Continued operating under BC Byrnes. And DC Hay, until ordered
by Chief Hay to return to quarters. Arrived back at 19th Street Eng. 3 Ladder 12 & Batt 7 at
2145 Hrs.

Operations: E-4 responded to box 8087. Upon seeing heavy fire and smoke from upper floor in
Tower One, E-4 reported to lobby command post. E-4 proceeded to fire floor, when second
plane crashed into Tower Two. E-4 possibly returned to lobby but unk"no)/vn fo.r certain. Tower
One collapsed and trapped members of E-4 with the exception of FF Humphrey, who
managed to aquire protection in the Post Office Building/This is all the^rtrormat[pj>wg have on

Upon arrival at WTC command post with 5 members, roll-ups, standpipe kit, irons,oxygen
bag and 1 extra Scott cylinder per man,was ordered to team up with Eng 10 and report to
the 79th floor and "go to work". While working our way up,due to the # of people coming
down,we were separated from Fr. DelValle and he was killed in the collapse. At about the
23th floor Fr. Brogan had
OPERATIONS:
severe chest pains. I called for O2 and 2 P.A. ESU cops administered oxygen and when
he felt better I decided to bring him down to EMS with Eng 5 members. Just then the
building started shaking and I ordered my members to evacuate.When we exited the
building I found out the south tower had collapsed.We raced to the rig where I found Fr.
Carletti & Lynn. I ordered all members to board rig and drive north out of collapse zone.
Upon reaching Warren st. the 2nd collapse occurred.We then did recon. and surveyed
the area and ended up on broadway & thames st.

OPERATIONS:
Found a seviceable hydrant and relayed water to E 247 . We then walked to Church &
Dey st where we found Eng 41 connected to a gravity tank.We supplimented with another
hydrant and supplied TL 119 in extinguishing the fire @ 5 WTC Until 7 WTC was in danger
of collapsing. We then took up on orders of a chief officer to get our eyes checked and
cleaned at NY Eye and Ear.Eng 5 apparatus remained at scene and pumped for 2 days

OPERATIONS:
Upon arrival Engine Company 6 hooked up to hydrant on West St. Median and setup for a
High Pressure Pumping Operation. Engine 6 then proceeded to Stairway "B". As best we
can determine E-6 reached the 43rd. fl. before being ordered to leave the building. FF's
John Butler and Robert Emans repositioned the Rig under the West St. walkway as to
avoid being struck by falling debris and human bodies. Both Butler and Emans escaped
injury. Firefighter Green is the only member from E-6 to escape from stairway "B" to the
street before WTC-1 Collapsed, (see pg.2)

Firefighter Green was caught in the falling debris and massive cloud and by Gods grace
was able to avoid being struck and injured or killed. We believe Members from £-7 & L-1
managed to pull FF. Green out of the dust cloud to safety. FF.Green was admitted to St
Frances* Hospital with Pulmonary dysfunction and was released on 9/13/01.

WHEN WE HEARD THE ROAR OF A JET ENGINE ABOVE US.AS WE LOOKED UP WE
COULD SEE THE PLANE HEADED STRAIGHT FOR THE WORLD TRADE
CENTER.IMMEDIATELY UPON IMPACT ALL UNITS OPERATING AT BOX 171
RESPONDED TO 1 WTC . UPON ARRIVAL I ORDERED MY CHAUF TO TAKE THE
HYDRANT LOCATED AT THE S.W CORNER OF THE BLDG AND TO SUPPLY THE
STANDPIPE SIAMESE ALSO LOCATED AT THAT LOCATION.AT THAT POINT DUE TO
THE FLOOR AREA OF THE BLDG I DECIDED TO TAKE THE 4TH ROLL UP WHICH I HAD
TO CARRY.

UPON ENTERING THE LOBBY WE CAME UPON 2 CIVILIANS ON FIRE .1 ORDERED FF
BRAITHWAITE TO USE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER LOCATED IN THE LOBBY TO
EXTINGUISH THE 2 BURNING CIVILIANS.AT THAT POINT I REPORTED INTO CHIEF
PFEIFER (BATTALION 1 ) AT THE LOBBY COMMAND POST.HE ORDERED ME TO
ASCERTAIN IF ANY OF THE ELEVATORS WERE WORKING.I APPROACHED THE
BANK OF ELEVATORS CONTAINING THE FREIGHT ELEVATOR AND NOTICED
THAT THE DOOR HAD BEEN BLOWN OFF. I PUT THAT BANK ON FIREMAN
SERVICE AND NONE OF THE ELEVATORS RESPONDED.I THEN TRIED ANOTHER
BANK OF ELEVATORS WITH THE SAME RESULTS.AT THAT POINT I SAW THE FIRE
SAFETY DIRECTOR AND TRIED TO ASCERTAIN FROM HIM IF ANY ELEVATORS
WERE WORKING. HIS RESPONSE WAS , "I DON'T KNOW ". I RELAYED MY
FINDINGS TO BATTALION 1. AT THAT POINT CHIEF PFEIFER ORDERED E-7 TO
TEAM UP WITH L-8 AND BEGIN CLIMBING UP THE STAIRS. AS WE ENTERED
STAIRWAY B WE ENCOUNTERED CIVILIANS EVACUATING, WHICH SLOWED OUR
ASCENT.UPON REACHING THE 10™ FL. WE DECIDED TO TAKE A REST. AT THAT
POINT I CHECKED STAIRWAY C AND NOTICED IT WAS LESS CROWDED.AFTER
RESTING WE AGAIN STARTED OUR CLIMB, THIS TIME IN STAIRWAY C.WE
STOPPED AGAIN TO REST AT THE 15™, 20™, AND 25TH FL'S.AT THE 25™ FL WE
HEARD A LOUD BANG AND FELT THE BLDG SHAKE.ALL MEMBERS DOVE FOR
COVER INTO THE STAIRWAY. AFTER THE SHAKING STOPPED WE STARTED OUR
CLIMB AGAIN ,STOPPING AT THE 30™ FL TO REST. AT THAT POINT THE CHIEF
FROM THE 11™ BATTALION APPEARED AND ORDERED ALL MEMBERS OUT OF
THE BLDG. WE STARTED OUR EVACATION IN AN ORDERLY FASHION FROM
STAIRWAY C.UPON REACHING THE 10™ FLOOR, LT. KEVIN PFEIFER CALLED ME
INTO A ROOM AND SAID " LOOK OUT THIS WINDOW WE CANNOT GO OUT THE C
STAIRWAY DEBRIS IS FALLING FROM THE BLDG AND IT WILL HIT US , LETS
SWITCH TO THE B STAIRWAY". AT THAT POINT WE SWITCHED TO THE B
STAIRWAY AND DESCENDED TO THE LOBBY.UPON REACHING THE LOBBY I
NOTICED THAT THE COMMAND POST HAD BEEN ABANDONED AND
IMMEDIATELY LEFT THE BLDG WITH MY MEMBERS.UPON REACHING WEST.ST,
MY MEN AND I TURNED RIGHT AND HEADED NORTH. UPON REACHING VESEY
ST.I TURNED AND LOOKED UP AT 1 WTC. AT THAT POINT THE TOP FLOOR OF 1
WTC EXPLODED INTO A FIRE BALL FOLLOWED BY THE COLLAPSE OF THE
ENTIRE BLDG. WE STARTED RUNNING ,MADE IT ABOUT HALF A BLOCK, LOOKED
BACK AND NOTICED A HUGE CLOUD ABOUT 10 STORIES HIGH GAINING ON US.
AT THAT POINT MY MEN AND I DOVE FOR THE FLOOR AND COVERED UP.AFTER
ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND IN COMPLETE DARKNESS I ROSE TO MY FEET DONNED
MY FACEPIECE, AND TRIED TO FIND THE REST OF MY COMPANY. AFTER ABOUT 1
HR I WAS ABLE TO LOCATE ALL OF MY MEN.AFTER REGROUPING AND MAKING
SURE ALL MEMBERS WERE OK , WE REPORTED BACK INTO THE SCENE AND
BEGAN SEARCHING FOR VICTIMS.

OPERATIONS:
FF Hayden E-9 observed from quarters airliner striking WTC Tower 1. Lt. Fody PCOT E-9
and Capt. Jonas L-6 ordered both units to respond. En route units recevied response
ticket 2-2 8087 box. E-9 responded with Satellite Apparatus. On arrival at WTC Lt. Fody
ordered Pumper positioned at Vesey and West STs. and Siamese supplied. Officer and
FF's Blaich, O'Sullivan, Hayden entered building with 3 lengths 2 1/2" hose, S/P kit, Masks
with extra 45 min cylinder per member. Co. reported to DC Hayden at Fire Command
Station ordered to team with E-15 and advance to

Operations: continued
Fire area via stairs. E-9 began advance via B stair. At approximately the 11 floor
Capt. Jonas L-6 transmitted "Mayday" for a member of E-9 for chest pain. Lt.
Fody descended approximately one flight to asses member's condition. Lt. Fody
located FF Hayden at stair landing. FF Hayden was helped into floor area by Lt.
and members of E-9. At this time FF Hayden stated the pain had abated and that
he was able to continue. Lt. Fody further assessed members condition (pulse,
breathing etc.) and decided to resume advance. At approximately the 20 floor E-9
entered floor area to rest and rehydrate. Upon reentering stairwell severe
rumbling and swaying of building was felt. Following this a transmission via HT
notified of "partial collapse on 66 floor". (This motion of the structure was
actually caused by the collapse of WCT 2 although this was not known at this
time). Motion of building ceased and building was determined to be sound. E-9
attempted to continue advance. At approximately the 23 floor E-9 encountered
members descending stairs and were informed that order to evacuate by
members had been given. E-9 then reversed direction and descended stair.
Members exited building via West ST. and proceeded north on West to just past
Vesey. St. Lt. Fody attempted to reassemble company and members began to
remove bunker gear to cool down.
Within 2-3 minutes 1 WTC began to collapse. Lt. Fody instructed members to run
up West St. and take cover. Members moved away from building and took cover
behind vehicles parked on West. St. The ensuing dust, smoke and debris cloud
and shock wave blocked sunlight, caused difficulty in breathing and disoriented
members. As smoke lifted and dust settled. (10 to 15 minutes) Lt. Fody again
attempted to reassemble members in anticipation of roll call of units. FF's Blaich,
O'Sullivan, and Price were quickly located. (FF Price had entered building
separately and exited safely)
FF's Allese and Hayden were located within 30-40 minutes after physical search
and repeated attempts at HT contact.
E-9, as a unit, returned to area of collapse in attempt to assist search and rescue
of L-6 now known to be trapped within collapse area. Attempt was made, under
command of BC Blaich to reach L-6 members via garage entrance on Vesey St.
with charged handline. With this avenue blocked and area potentially unstable,
members were ordered away from area. (Information was soon received that L-6
had extricated themselves and were in a safe area)
E-9 now moved to Vesey St. west of West St. to regroup once again. FF
Hayden's condition was reassessed, examined by EMS and transported to the
hospital via ambulance.
Within approximately 20-30 minutes 7 WCT had begun to collapse and members
were forced to move further west of Vesey. St.
With conditions stabilizing, E-9 reported to BC Blaich who then ordered attempts
to be made to supply Satellite. This was accomplished via 5" Sat. hose stretched
to Marine Unit.

OPERATIONS: Engine Co 15
E-15 responded to the WTC 1st due on the 2nd alarm. E-15 arrived at the
North tower and was immediately told by the lobby command post (under D-l
command) to start our ascent to the upper floors via any stairway available. E-15
found stairway 'A' and began their ascent continually verbally assuring civilians as
they exited the building. When we arrived on the 12th floor we assisted a member
of Squad. 18 who was light headed and dizzy. This me'mber was not radio
equipped. After a short break to assist the member E-15 continued their ascent
along with the member of Squad 18. We notified the officer of Squad 18 that this
member would operate with E-15 until a later time. E-15 reached approximately
the 17th or 18th floor when we notified by civilians evacuating the building via this
stairway that a person collapsed on the 15th floor. Lt. Foder ordered 2 men to assist
the civilian into the office area so other people could continue evacuating the
building. The nearest re-entry was on the 13th floor and the firefighters removed
the civilian into this area. After several minutes, when we were unable to make
radio contact with these members due to heavy radio traffic, I ordered all members
down to the 13th floor to assist. As we assisted the civilian a loud roar occurred,
which we believe to be Tower 2 collapsing. Unknown what was actually
happening either above us or in Tower 2, we heard radio transmissions by
unknown member(s) that the South Tower had just collapsed and to evacuate the
North Tower, as there was collapse potential for this tower also.
One member of E-15 continued to assist the civilian, as the stairs were very
crowded and we started our descent single file down stair 'A'. FF Kelley of Squad
18 assisted Port Authority Police with the evacuation and carrying of an
overweight man who could no longer walk. As we reached the base of the stairway
in the lobby there were police officers directing civilians out of the building E-15
remained here while assisting these civilians and awaiting the remaining members
of the evacuation crew. A member of Rescue 5 (TAG 2) was also present in this
stairway and as the removal the obese man was taking some time I sent two men
with the member of Rescue 5 to look for a second means of egress. Debris and
bodies were coming from the upper floors near our means of egress. The members
returned a short time later having found a second means of egress, although not
much better than the main egress.
All civilians that were occupying stairway 'A' appeared to have been
evacuated as the FF's and Police came to the lobby with the obese person. E-15
continued to assist with the removal of this person through the lobby of the North
Tower and into the courtyard near building 6. As we crossed the courtyard under
falling debris and bodies either falling or jumping from above, we requested
assistance from E-24. E-15 (Officer and 2 men on site while ECC and one other
member of E-15 were at apparatus already), E24 officer and a member, 1 member
of Squad 18, 1 member of Rescue 5 TAG unit, 2 or 3 PA Police officers and the
civilian were crossing the courtyard when we heard what appeared to be a jet plane
landing on top of us, when in fact the building (North Tower) was collapsing. E-15
was blown into a building (possibly #5), We were struck by falling debris and
covered with much dust and materials. After clearing some of the unknown
materials from my throat and knowing I was able to still move, I called out to see
who was still with me. Two men of E-15 were able to call out to me, no one else
answered at this point and we continued to move away from the falling debris as
quickly as possible, knowing that the building was collapsing but still not realizing
the entire building was collapsing around us.
Hearing several men around us as we moved through the thick black cloud,
several unknown firemen were able to join us and follow us away from the
immediate area while still hearing explosions and having building materials
continually falling. As the dust lifted somewhat the firefighters who joined us all
dispersed in different directions looking for other members of their units.
Disoriented, having difficulty breathing, chest pain and pain from being
struck by debris Lt. Foder, FF Wisniewski and FF Brennan were removed from the
scene by Metro Care Ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital. In addition FF Salvador
E-28 was assisted by E-15 with ankle injury to the ambulance. He was also
removed via Metro Care Ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital.
FF Mathe and FF Hynes continued to operate at the disaster scene as did other
members of E-15 who were on recall.
We were able to later learn that all members, PA Police and the civilian were alive,
although some were banged up and some hospitalized from the debris and force of
the collapse.

E-24 Responded on the intial alarm (a 2nd Alarm). E-24 responded south on Greenwich
St. turned RT. onto Vesey and Parked on CIO West and Vesey.
E-24 prfcoeded to the lobby of Tower 1 and awaited orders. E-24 was assigned to operate
with L-20 and proceeded up STWY "A". Many civilians were self-evacuating in single file
as L-20 and E-24 proceeded up the stwy single file.
E-24 stopped for a couple of minutes between the 15th and 20th floor to assist with a
woman in respitory distress(asthma). E-24 requested EMS but soon realized that Urgent's
and Mayday's had already been

given for firefighters and other civilians in worse shape.
After several minutes the woman, assisted by another civilian, was feeling better and continued
her descent. This other civilian stated he was from the 90th floor. He was bleeding from the
forehead with minor injuries and claimed that he saw a big fireball on the 90 th floor. He
believed that everyone from that floor was able to make it to the stwy and escape.
E-24 continued with L-20 up STWY "A". Upon reaching the 27th floor E-24 needed to rest. Two
civilians accompanied with a ^pman in a wheelchair were located in the hallway. FF. Billy was
ordered to stay with these civilians until he received additional assistance to remove them.
E-24 then proceeded to the 35th floor. At this time very few civilians were still coming down
STWY "A". E-24 noticed that a staging was being set up on this floor. A Batt. Chief was on this
floor. He may have been from the 11th Battalion. E-33, L-5, and L-20 were also on this floor
recuperating from the quick ascent up 35 floors. These units stayed on this floor for 5-10
minutes. A Mayday to evacuate the building was heard over the Battalion Chiefs radio, which
was on the command channel. Everyone on the floor, including A couple of EMS personnel and
a few civilians started towards the exits when the building shook violently. The Chief ordered
everyone to the Stairways. It is believed E-33 evacuated towards STWY "C". L-5 and EMS and
civilians exited STWY "B". L-20 and E-24 exited STWY "A".
LT. Fischer of L-20 was last seen going up Stwy "A" to retrieve a couple of his men. E-24
quickly started its descent. At the 27th floor E-24 stopped for FF. Billy who was still with a
wosj^n in a wheelchair. It is believed that E-21 took control of the removal of this woman down
the "B" staircase. At the same time FF. Claes had gotten separated from E-24 and passed the rest
of the unit on the 27th floor. Proby trainee Byrne, in the commotion, had left his MASK on the
35th floor. He was ordered to continue his descent and to get out of the building and to stop for
no one. When E-21 decided to remove the civilian from the 27th floor, E-24 and its two
remaining members again started its descent down STWY "A".
Upon reaching the 17th floor E-24 accounted a Firefighter at the stairway exit who requested
assistance in the removal of civilians from a room. E-24 ordered his members to stay at the
Stairway. The lights were now out on the hallways. Upon reaching the room, E-24 noticed a
room with approx. 15 FF's and 10 civilians. E-33 and Rescue 3 were present. E-24 was informed
by Res-3 that there might not be any way out of the building. E-24 insisted that all personnel
were ordered to evacuate and should do so immediately. At this time E-24 saw some of the
destruction on West Street. E-24 saw some members and civilians begin to descend STWY "C".
E-24 rejoined his members at STWY "A".
E-24continued its descent down STWY "A" and encountered FF. Kelly SQ. 18 who requested
assistance with a large male civilian, who was injured and unable to walk. FF. Kelly also
informed E-24 that STWY "a" was blocked off. E-24 with FF Kelly and a couple of Police
officers (port authority or ESU) removed this civilian to the lobby. We made our way to the

Northside exit. Visibility was approx 10-15 ft. outside the tower. At this time we also
encountered some members from E-15. We all exited toward World Trade Center #6. E-24
officer dumped his mask at this time. As we got to the side wall of WTC #6 a thunderous roar or
explosion was heard. The area went completely dark. The area was filled with smoke and debris
and immediately following was a gush of wind. This officer attemped to run and made it to the
east side of WTC #6. This officer then dove down against the building and was covered with
debris. When the falling debris stopped it was still completely darkened down. There were
craters all over. E-24 eventually saw a flashlight from WTC #5 . There was a Police officer at
this location who stated this was the way out. E-24 officer crawled to this location and was able
to exit.
E-24 officer could then hear FF. Billy calling a Mayday. E-24 attempted to contact FF. Billy and
direct him out. FF. Billy did not respond to E-24 communications. E-24 then called his own
Mayday. E-24 then called the Command Post. E-24 received no response to any
communications. E-24 then looked for help along Church St. E-24 located FF. Byrne and
continued to look for help, a Mask, or any search ropes. E-24 then located L-164 rig and called
Manhattan dispatcher and called a Mayday. E-24 made its way to E-7 quarters where a triage
center had been set up. A doctor ordered E-24 officer to be transported to hospital with
respiratory distress and reddening of the throat.
E-24 officer was admitted to Forest Hill Hospital. When released E-24 officer was transported
back to quarters at approx. 1600 hr.
E-24 control man had descended past E-24 on the 27th floor. Upon reaching the 10th floor an
unknown firefighter informed E-24 control (FF. Claes) to exit using STWY "B". E-24 Control
saw B-2 FF. Apostol. E-24 Control exited to Engine 24 apparatus when Tower 1 collapsed. E-24
received burns to back. E-24 contol then acted as E-24 chauffeur until 1600 hrs.
E-24 supplied TL 12, two handlines, and an Akron New Yorker Muliversal.
E-24 Control removed himself to Triage at Styvesant H.S. for treatment.

E-24 Back-up (ff.Billy) removed to Downtown Hospital.
E-24 Door (FF. Sterling) removed to St. Vincent's Hospital.
E-24 Nozzle (FF. Byrne) removed to quarters of E-7.

Reported to Lobby Command Post of North Tower. Was ordered to team with Engine 4
and proceed with roll ups to upper floors. Walked up staircase B to the 4th floor,
switched to staircase C . On floor 10, as ordered by Bn 11, E.28 aided evacuation of
civilians. E 28 proceeded to the 28th floor. After the South Tower collapsed we were
ordered to evacuate North Tower by Bn.11. Eng. 28 proceeded down as we had come up
with Eng 4. Upon arrival at the lobby E28 exited to West St and went north as the North
Tower fell.

Remarks:
After 1st collapse had 3 missing members, Fr.'s Fusaro, Garofalo, Macagnone. Reported
them missing. They were located later in the operation in good condition . Exited garage
with Ff. Cullen and operated as per Chief Ganci's orders to set new command post near
Vesey St. We were directed to gather as many members as were present and prepare for
next collapse. 2 members from Fire Prevention operated with us.
OPERA I IONS:
Responded to West St. south of Vessey St. Reported to command post opposite 1 World
Trade center. Assigned as command post company by Field Communications unit.
Escaped first collapse after running into a parking garage located benith bldg behind
command post. Returned to West St. and located only Fr. Cullen. Was ordered to go
through parking garage to new location to regroup. Was on Vessey St and North End Ave
when second tower collapsed and took cover behind building. I then returned to collapse
sight and operated a 1 3/4 handline from E-33 with Fr. Cullen and extinguished numerous
Car Fires, rubbish fires and a vending cart fire with propane tanks involved. We then
extinguished approx. 10 more car fires in parking lot west side West St. Then assembled
on West St. and searched pile under command of BC Salka.

OPERATIONS:
L 1 was operating at Box 171 (Church and Lispenard) for a gas leak and was about to
take up when we saw an American Airlines jet fly overhead at tree top level heading
towards WTC #1. After witnessing impact L 1 responded to lobby of WTC #1 and was
ordered by B.C. Pheifer to ascend any staircase available. L 1 chose staircase B
and encounted a steady orderly flow of civilians evacuating and water flowing
down stairs. We were instucted by an unknown B.C. to turn off sprinklers on various
floors while ascending.

OPERATIONS:
L-5 reported to lobby command post and was ordered to staging area on 35th floor.
When order was given to evacuate L- 5 made its way down using the B stair while aiding a
number of civilians. Their last known location was on the 12th floor. After the collapse a
mayday was given by a member of L-5 and was answered by L-6. After a few minutes
there were no further communications by L-5. FF Monohan of L-5 responded from home
located L-5's apparatus and raised the aerial ladder to the courtyard next to 6 WTC.
Numerous civilians made there way down the ladder to the ground

OPERATIONS:
L-6 was assigned 1st due on the 2nd alarm. L-6 proceeded on foot up the "B" stairway. Upon
reaching the 27th floor, WTC Tower #2 collapsed. At that time, L-6 decided to evacuate WTC #1. At
about the 20th floor, L-6 found a Ms. Josephine Harris who was having difficulty walking. L-6
asssited Ms. Harris in evacuation. At the 4th floor, Ms. Harris could no longer walk. L-6 was
searching for a chair to carry her in when the collapse of WTC #1 started. L-6 was trapped in
stairway "B" with Ms. Harris, PAPO Lim, B.C. Picciotta Bn. 11, Fr. Bacon E.39, and Lt. Cross E.16.
L-6 took the initiative for survival and rescue of all those that were trapped in the stairway.
Maydays were sent out, and L-6 removed themselves after about 4 hrs. L-6 transfered Ms. Harris to
L-43 so she could be removed via stokes stretcher.

OPERATIONS:
Responded to north tower 1 st due.
L-8 was on 30 floor when told by a B.C. to leave gear and evacuate the building.
L-8 then proceeded to lobby, when all members reached lobby they proceeded through
window to exit along building wall toward the north bridge with Lt. Halloran the last in
line. After exiting building the second tower collapsed, One member FF Butera was
knocked down and burned on the back of his neck. When the smoke settled all members
were accounted for except for Lt. Halloran.

L-8 was at the command post when the first tower collapsed.
FF Carlsen, Garcia and Grady started assisting in the evacuation of injured, NYPD, FDNY
and EMS, out of an underground parking garage through the rear of 1 World Financial
Center. At the same time FF Channell and FF Florio started a search on West St and near
the command post for injured. After the search FF Channell and Florio assisted with the
rest of L-8 and other companies in the evacuation of the injured when the second tower
collapsed. FF Channell and Florio were hit by the blast from the collapse of second tower
and knocked to the ground. After receiving O2 and eye washes FF Channell and FF Florio
teamed up with FF Garcia, Grady and Carlsen.

Ladder 9 responded on the 2nd or 3rd alarm riding with 2 extra members. FF Gerard
Baptiste (detailed to Engine 33 9x6 tour) and FF John Tierney (voluntary duty). FF's jeff
Walz, John Tierney and Gerard Baptiste are still among the missing.
OPERATIONS:
L-9 reported to the Lobby Command Post in the North tower. Ordered by D-1 to ascend
Stairway B. We made our way up and got as high as the 31st fir. While on the 31st fir the
South tower collapsed. A BC passed on the order to evacuate. We did so, passing the
order on to other FF's on the way down. We slowly descended the bldg due to the she*r
volume of FF's in the stairwell doing the same. At approx the 11th fir all progress slowed
basically to a halt. We were then informed that another stair (C?) was less crowded.

We passed this order on verbally to all FFs within shouting distance. Radio's were virtually
useless. We made our way to the lobby in the other stairwell. We were then instructed by a Be to
make our way north and to get away from the building. We did not have all of our members in
the immediate vicinity at this time. Due to the numerous FF's entering the stairwells as we
descended, we were spread out throughout the stairwell. We tried to contact them all via radio as
we headed north. I did come upon two of my members as we made our way away from the
building, sitting on a median. I instructed them to move further away. They did so. Shortly
thereafter the North tower collapsed. We ran for our lives. The dust caught us but not any large
debris.Upon exiting the dust I was able to contact four of my members either visually or via
radio. As we headed away from the debris, I was trying to locate a command post or staging area
or anyone. Unfortunately, there were very few initial responders left. After getting cleaned up at
a local warehouse (a couple of members had minor injuries and required medical assistance) the
rest of us made our way to the nearest firehouse (Ladder 8). There I learned of a staging area at
Ladder 20. We made our way there. At this time I was still confident all of men were safe and
sent one man to Ladder 9's quarters to await the arrival of any members we had not yet
contacted. I remained at Ladder 20 to await any word there. Later that evening I made my way to
Ladder 9. FF s Jeff Walz, Gerard Baptiste and John Tierney are still among the missing. The
remaining members all had minor injuries requiring medical leave.

OPERATIONS:
Responded to Command post of # 1 WTC, reported into BC Pfeifer Bn 1, Commenced
walking up 'B1 stair. Members stopped on 31 floor to receive oxypen, Lt. Harrell, FF Tallon
and FF Olsen continued further up the 'B" stair, then FF Cancel and Pilipczuk received
info from an FBI agent to evacuate the building. FF Cancel and Pilipczuk got down to
lobby and exited onto West Street, eventually ending up in New Jersey City Medical
center, after collapse of building. LCC FF Morabito helped evacuate lobby and had
civilians exit through concourse toward subway line #1 and 'A'.

L-12
Upon arrival at the WTC L-12 reported to the Command Post located in the lobby of the
Marriot Hotel. Since the Officer of L-12 was given their assignment none of the surviving
members know who at the command post specifically gave them their assignment.
L-12's assignment was to search the upper floors of the Hotel. They took the C stairway
up to the 14 floor and began their searches floor by floor thru the 18th floor. While in the C
stairway proceeding to the 19th floor, Tower 2 collapsed knocking all the members down the
stairs. The Company was intact with the Officer and 7 FF's he had with him. Being in a
stairway, they were not aware of what had happened, but knew it was catastrophic, and quickly
headed down the stairs leaving any tools that they had lost in the confusion. When they reached
the 4th & 5th floor area they were unable to make their way any further down due to debris from
the collapse. Lt. Petti told the members to stay where they were and he and FF Juarbe would go
back up the stairs to get the tcx.-is and LSR that they had left behind on the 18th floor when they
made their decision to get out as quickly as possible. As Lt. Petti and FF Juarbe started back up a
mayday was being transmitted by a member of L-4. Hearing the mayday several times, Lt. Petti
answered it, after not hearing any response from the command post. As they worked there way
up to the 19th floor they stayed in contact with the member giving the mayday (he did not know
his location to guide them) until they could not go any further up. They took the tools they could
find and proceeded back down, still looking for the trapped member, all the while staying in
contact with rest of the company which was still searching for a way out.
The members who had remained on the 4th(?) floor found a. hole in the debris and were
starting to work there way out when Tower 1 collapsed.
FF Mullan had started to work his way up the stairway to inform the members coming
down of the possible way out and to look for the missing member and was only 10 feet away
when the collapse occurred. Lt. Petti, FF Juarbe and FF Mullan did not make it out. The
remaining 5 members slide down the debris and made it to safety.

OPERATIONS:
L-15 responded via State St/Battery PI. At West St. traffic was severely slowed. At the
entrance to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel a traffic barrier waged under the front of the
apparatus and broke an air line. After attempting to remove the obstruction, Lt. Leavey
ordered the chauffeur to work on removing it and took the rest of the company up West
St FF Vaskis,the chauffeur, worked on removing the obstruction and repairing the leak
and when the second plane hit he ran to join the company. He was unable to find their
location.

FF Haines worked the nite tour of'''9/10, was relieved and then responded to the scene with Bn. 4
when they passed quarters. He reported to the staging area then operated after the collapse of #2.
FF Barry was in qtrs but on VL. He and FF Olsen (who had been relieved from the nite tour)
went to the scene on foot. They were seen together at the staging area on West St.
Prob. FF Allen was relieved from the nite tour but rode to the scene and operated with Engine
Co. 4. His remains were recovered with the remains of other members of Engine 4.
Nobody that I have spoken with has reported seeing L-15 in tower #1. It is possible that as the
company was running up West St. the second plane hit #2 and the company operated there. The
remains of Lt. Leavey and the frontpiece of FF Oelschlagers helmet were found in the footprint
of tower 2.

Upon orders of F.D.dispatcher manned 500 apparatus and conducted operations at WTC.
OPERATIONS:
Upcn orders of D.C. Hayden, Division 1, L-18 conducted evacuation of civilians on the 5th floor
of the North Tower (entrance on West St.)
Upon arrival it Sth floor .occupants were in the process of self evacuating, L-18 assisted.
Approximately 15 minutes into the evacuation the entire north Tower shook violently and at that
tune total darkness ensued.
The evacuation stairwell "A" was immediately filed with smoke dust making that stairwell
unusable for evacuation purposes.
Stairwell C had collapsed and stairwell "B" was found to be intact (luckily) Lt Borega then set
up a lighting relay using all of Ladder 18's members to re-direct the occupants from stairwell "A"
to stairwell "3".
All occupants (approximately 200 civilians) in the above stairwell were removed to tha lobby-
under the most hazardous of conditions. The civilians then evacuated the bulding
fjpon entering the lobby, Lt. Borega heard reports of members trappea above.
L-18 then started TO ascend the stairwell to assist LT rescue efforts.
As the members started to go higher, companies coming down the stairs informed him that upper
floors were collapsing and that there was a heavy odor of gas throughout the bldg.
Fearing for the safety of his members due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions Lt Borega
ordered his members back to the lobby.
With no orders to the contrary and hearing of the collapsing of the upper floors (via H.T j Lt.
Borega ordered his members out of the bulding
Approximately 2 minutes later the entire North Tower collapsed
Upon re-grouping the members of Ladder 18 assisted with rescue operations.
At approx.0100(Sept. 12,2001) Lt Borega and members were ordered back to quarters by D.C
Butler.

Officer and members of Ladder 24 were in Lobby of Marriot Hotel when WTC tower 2
collapsed.
OPERATIONS:
L-24 responded on 5th alarm transmitted when tower two was attacked. L-24 responded
against traffic on the Westside H'way. L-24 reported to Command Post on West side
H'way. We were instructed by Command Post to report to Chief Barbara in the South
Tower. While heading to South Tower we were told by CWTCommander Cassano that
Chief Barbera was at the Command Post inside the Marriot Hotel. We entered the Hotel at
the Southwest corner (Tall Ships Restaurant). South Tower collapsed onto Marriot before
we made it to Command Post. All members on duty in Ladder 24 survived.
