Travel independently in a large group while safely and quickly changing speed and direction. b. Objective i. The students will travel independently in a large group while safely and quickly changing speed and direction when playing the game: red light, green light. Big Understandings a. It is important to know how to change directions while walking. This activity will give the students experience to be aware of their surroundings. b. In the future students will apply this skill when they are driving a car. They will know what the traffic lights mean and they will be able to control their car at different speeds. Assessment Evidence a. The learner will show how to travel in a safe way, at a safe speed and how to change direction when needed. Opening Hook a. When class starts the students are in their assigned spots and the teacher will begin. b. The teacher will get the class interested t by using an app on a smart phone called Traffic Light. This will turn the phone into a traffic light so the students can see the red, yellow and green light. The teacher will talk about traffic lights and what the different colors stands for. Once the student understands the different types of traffic lights, the teacher will explain that we will play a game that involves the traffic light called: Red Light, Green Light. Instructional Strategies: a. Input i. The teacher will move the group into the center of the 4 cones to explain the rules. ii. The teacher will go over the rules, state what is expected of the students and the purpose of the game. The teacher will explain that this game is about changing direction and speed when the traffic controller (leader of the game) changes the command from: green light, yellow light and red light. iii. The traffic controller will stand on one side of the cones in a distance of 10 yards from the main group of students. iv. The traffic controller will give instructions by saying: green light which means to walk fast until the traffic controller says another color. Yellow light means to walk in slow motion and red light means to freeze in your spot until the command changes. The first one to touch the traffic controller will become the new traffic controller and the game will start over. b. Modification/ Accommodations: i. Students with physical disabilities will have a chance to start out at cones that will be closer to the traffic controller. ii. Students with hearing disabilities will get to see me sign red, yellow, green in sign language. c. Modeling: i. The teacher will ask 4 students to be model what the activity is supposed to look like. ii. Then the teacher will ask another group of students to model the incorrect way. iii. Next, the same group models the correct way. d. Guided Practice/monitoring i. The students will participate in a mini game to practice how to play the game correctly. e. Check for Understanding: i. The teacher will ask questions about the game. 1. What do you do if the light is green? 2. Where do you walk? 3. How do you win the game? 4. Why are you playing this game?
