on the Far East Side!

Photos and story by Ricky J. Carrasco

On Wednesday,
workers were still putting on the finishing touches on El Paso's newest movie theater, Cinemark East Montana. The tech people were playing movies and trailers to ensure the picture and sound were perfect. Crews were touching up the building and landscaping to be as clean and presentable as possible. The concessions employees were performing practice runs and polishing up the countertops and every available surface. This will be El Paso's 4th Cinemark, but as Jennifer

Frederick, marketing manager stated, they recognized that the area east of the Loop on Montana Street is booming. "It's a good area of El Paso, lots of new housing. TinselTown Theater is pretty close by, but this area needed an entertainment spot and we wanted to be the first to come service the community." The 14 auditorium, 2,388 seat theater is part of the company's "Next-Gen" concept that aims to bring the newest in digital entertainment in all their theaters. All screens are floorto-ceiling, wall-to-wall, all digital sound throughout the

theater and 7 of the 14 theaters are 3-D capable. The flagship auditorium is the XD: Extreme Digital Cinema room, which features their biggest seating capacity, clearest image and 20,000 watts of sound pouring out of more than 40 speakers from the four walls and ceiling. On opening night, the theater will be showing the Carrie remake that opens this week nationwide. Also new to El Paso is the concession options. Cinemark East Montana features a cafeteria style counter where patrons can pick and choose from the standard fare like popcorn and nachos, but patrons will also have options like pizza, pretzel bites and self-

serve candy, soft drinks and slush drinks. There will also be a front caf area that will be serving Starbucks coffee, beer, wine and even frozen margaritas and daiquiris! Inside the theater, the seats are all faux leather, which makes them easier to clean and upkeep. All armrests go up and have some movement to be as comfortable as possible. Frederick also wanted to tout the Cinemark mobile App, where customers can look up movie times and purchase tickets. More innovative is the CineMode feature that, when activated during a movie, automatically dims your cell phones screen and lowers the

volume. Patrons who use the CineMode app during a movie will be eligible to receive coupons for in-theater use. She also promised that there will be ushers checking for cell phone users during movie running time, as well as checking for underage drinking.

Heath Poe, the theaters general manager, stated that the business is currently employing 75 people. When asked why the Cinemark company would open another theater in El Paso, Poes answer was direct and to the point. Every theater weve opened has exceeded our expectations. Continues on next page

by the Ball Boy

Continued from page 3 Though Poe has only lived in El Paso for the last few months, he sees the potential in our area. The market is growing, there are new homes everywhere. You have the military just down the street. You have explosive growth across the border. Theres potential for growth for any business. Not recognizing all the factors that make this area great would be detrimental for business. Both Poe and Frederick also expressed interest in serving the areas regional interests. For example, if there is enough interest in movies like Instructions Not Included which is a very bilingual-language movie, then that will be passed down to the corporate level. If people attend that kind of movie, then certainly more will be brought in the future. Cinemark East Montana will host their grand opening to the public this Friday, October 18th. Prices range from $7 matinee times (before 6pm) to $12 for XD Cinema on Fridays and Saturdays. Check local listings.

The UTEP football team has a bye week and this is exactly what the team needed. The Miners need a week to regroup and refocus for the remaining 6 games of the season left. The Miners lost this past Saturday against Tulsa 34-20. The UTEP defense continues to be the biggest factor in losing. Jamiell Showers is having a really great season but its being overshadowed by these nabs in the loss column. Well see if the Miners can regroup this week since there is not game this weekend. Next the Miners will face Rice in Houston on Oct 26th at Houston and the following week against Johnny Football and Texas A&M.

Miner basketball starts on November 9th and there sure are a lot of people wishing for that to come sooner. Recently 3star recruit Omega Harris committed to the Miners along with Louisiana recruit Trey Touchet. Both great players for the class of 2014. With the addition of new assistant Coach Bob Cantu, the Miners have been offering some really great players for the class of 2015. 5-star Center Stephen Zimmerman is still considering UTEP as a place to play college basketball. 4-star Las Vegas recruit Nate Grimes just picked up an offer from the Miners as well and is seriously considering the move to El Paso.

Weather 101
What a fall it has been here in El Paso! Temperatures have been running above normal for September and early October (upper 80s and low 90's). I had a recent conversation with a KVIA viewer that referred to our recent weather as being an Indian summer. We had a good conversation about the use of this terminology. An Indian summer refers to a time of year when temperatures are well above normal. It's a period of about a week that is associated with warm, calm weather occurring in the autumn months. Many references point out that a true Indian summer can not occur until there has been a frost or killing freeze (which we haven't had). In most instances, this is a weather phenomenon that occurs in the fall. It can be applied in winter, as long as an area experiences well

above average temperatures. I was curious how the term Indian summer came about. I checked out many sources as to the origins and there are many. According the 1985 Old Farmer's Almanac, the term goes back to the very early settlers in New England. It says that each year the people would welcome the arrival of a cold wintry weather in late October when they could leave their stockades (camp or military base) unarmed. But then came a time when it would suddenly turn warm again, and the Native Americans would decide to have one more go at the settlers. "Indian summer," the settlers called it.

LIFESTYLES
Dressing for the Weekend: Autumn Fashion Favorites
Sharon Mosley Whether you're planning a road trip through the mountains to take in the autumn leaves or strolling through the city streets to check out the latest exhibits at the local museums, it's time to put the stiletto heels and clutches away and go easy on your fashion choices. Take a break this fall from all the blacks and grays of the workweek and breathe in the new season with these new ways to dress down your old favorites: crisp fall day with your feet throbbing in those new platform boots you just bought last week. Unless you intend to just sit on the park bench looking ultra cool in your biker boots, you won't get far with those "too new, too tight" albeit "too cool" shoes. Stick to stylish flats or sneakers (or your well-worn cowboy boots) and wait to wear those groovy new platforms to your first holiday party after you have a chance to break them in a little bit more. Weekend fashion with a twist: H&M's Design Award 2013 winning designer Minju Kim's collection featured at select H&M stores, as well as at Opening Ceremony stores starting Oct. 17. No, you probably don't want to wear your leather leggings while hiking through the foothills, but you can still prepare to brave the elements with a few outdoor classics that have some style. Distressed denim is a big trend and perfect for hitting the trails along with toughlook hiker boots and funky-looking knit hats. Go for function, but have some fun! Leave them behind for the holiday soirees in the months ahead.

You Were Being Honest ... But

DR. WALLACE: I met this guy at my cousin's house. He is my cousin's best friend. He asked me out and I said yes, so the following weekend we went to the movies. He was nice, but sort of weird. He invited me to go to a beach party the following Saturday and, again, I said yes. That was the first time I saw his tattoos. On one leg, he had a "busty" nude woman. His tattoo made him look stupid in my eyes, but all of his macho friends thought it was cool. That night when he took me home, I told him that his nude woman tattoo looked stupid. This made him angry and he swore at me, hopped into his car, and then sped away. My cousin said that this guy is really mad at me and that I needed to take a course in proper etiquette. Having a nude woman tattooed on his leg proved to me that he was stupid and that's what I told him. Do I need a course in etiquette or was I just being honest? Nameless, Naples, Fla. NAMELESS: You were being honest, but you were also being rude. At the very least, you might have gotten the message across by using another adjective rather than "stupid." Forget this guy as a possible future boyfriend. The two of you were not meant for each other.

Get comfortable.
There's nothing worse than trying to enjoy the beauty of a

Give your preppy basics a punk appeal. Most of us are ready to

settle into our flannel shirts and jeans for weekend fun, but promise me, this year, you'll put in a little more thought to dressing "up" for a few days instead of schlepping around in the grungy stuff that looks like it's spent the last few years wadded up on your closet floor.

Go natural Most of us
wouldn't think of taking a trip without packing the ubiquitous makeup bag. But if there's one time to forget the smoky eyes and the movie-star red lipstick, it's on the weekend. So unless your getaway includes a wedding gala or a charity ball, it's safe to say you can stick to the basics for a few days at least.

I DON'T ENJOY PLAYING PIANO FOR GUESTS

DR. WALLACE: I'm 14 years old and have been taking piano lessons ever since I was 4. I do enjoy playing and even taking my lessons. I hope someday I can earn a living playing the piano. A concert pianist would be a great goal. My parents are very proud of my playing. They were both born in Korea, where music is very important in almost all families. My only problem is that my parents want me to play "a little song" for visitors to our house. My father is a medical doctor and we have many house guests. I don't enjoy playing for the guests. It's like my parents force my music on them. I'm sure some of them are bored when I play a symphony piece. I like recitals and when I play before a larger audience, but when I'm at home I enjoy playing video games with my friends, not performing in front of my parents' friends and house guests. Nameless, Riverside, Calif. NAMELESS: Your parents are very proud of your musical talent and naturally want you to share it with their friends and acquaintances. But they also need to consider your feelings about the matter. It would be disastrous if the forced performances wound up making you dislike playing the piano. There are times when you should just be a normal 14-year-old boy, not a musical prodigy. Show my answer to Mom and Dad and see if something can be worked out where you perform occasionally and then for only a short time. You should always end your home performance with the guests clamoring for more!

Throw in some edgy Lighten up. Leave the Tigraphic print jacktanic totes behind. (Or at least in the car.) I know we all think ets, oversized sweaters,
whimsical sweatshirts, quilted puffer vests or slick leather leggings. we have to carry everything we have when we are sightseeing, but believe me, by the end of the day, your arms, back and everything else will be demanding mega doses of pain reliever. So plan ahead and pare down. Do you really need that iPad with you at all times? The cross-body messenger bags may be your best bet!

Think accessories
And if you just want to give your weekend wardrobe a little oomph without spending a lot of money, go for accessories. No, not the crown jewels, but statement scarves, knit beanies, retro sunglasses or ethnic satchels. Then snuggle up before a roaring fire in a giant blanket-like cape. You'll never want the weekend to end. Sharon Mosley is a former fashion editor of the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock and executive director of the Fashion Editors and Reporters Association.

On the Town
Mercury Retrograde Alert
By Holiday Mathis The not so good news is that the Mercury retrograde on the 21st begins three weeks of cosmic pranks. The good news is that it's the last time Mercury goes retrograde this year. Think of it as the stars aligning to keep you on your toes. Stay aware of what could go wrong to trip up your cozy rhythm. There are worse things than having to keep your eyes open to the possibilities. ARIES (March 21-April 19). You may be a limited person trying to make the best of things in an imperfect world, but you're undaunted by the odds this week. Your limitations only serve to help you define your style and identify your strengths. You will achieve small and meaningful goals by Wednesday. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You may not be inclined to express everything that you're feeling this week, or perhaps you're just waiting for the exact right moment to make your feelings known. Either way, you appreciate that timing can make or break a relationship. You'll have a knack for choosing the perfect moments. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). It's true that the relentlessly positive people make things happen. But it's the more critical people the ones who stop the action at key moments who will be the guardians of quality and taste. So don't write off those who are less pleasant to be around because they don't always say and do the nice thing. CANCER (June 22-July 22). There are points in the week when you are extremely sensitive: namely Monday, Thursday and Friday. During these times, you'll be at your best in a controlled environment. The successful outcome of a project will depend on your being in a comfortable, cool and quiet place. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). There is a proverbial door that has been closed to you, and this week you are determined to get through it. The best way to figure out what it takes to open a certain door is to stand by and watch people opening it. Is it their approach that matters or their strength? Is there a password or a key? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You have ambitious aims. Your mental game will be key to the physical execution of your plans. There's something you need to rehearse in your mind over and over until you get comfortable with it. Once you can wrap your head around it, you'll find it easier to approach it in real life. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Charge a fair if not substantial rate for your

work this week, and then stand behind it proudly, even if you feel unsure of your price. If you undervalue what you do, so will others. More importantly, they need to feel like they are getting the kind of special life experience that requires a personal investment. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Is it a bit much to ask a brain that has been wired to keep you safe by noting what might go wrong to "think positively"? Somehow you manage to be extremely upbeat while navigating dangerous waters. Hopefully your loved ones appreciate this natural ability of yours. It would take others a lot of effort to achieve it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Some people are opportunistic by nature. Watch out for these types this week because they don't appreciate what is given to them. They thrill to the grab, but as soon as they fill their pockets, they move on to the next thing. Only give your service, attention and products to people who will truly value them. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Your moods will be varied and numerous. Always remember that whatever feeling one moment holds, the next moment might hold something completely different. If you're feeling negative, don't put anything in writing, and avoid text and email in particular. There's no going back after you push "send." AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You will raise your status within a certain group. It may seem counterintuitive, but you won't be able to impress anyone by trying to be impressive. Your efforts to fine tune your image and pay more attention to your own needs and wishes will raise your self-esteem, and this attracts the respect you desire. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Your strongly empathetic nature makes it easy for you to see from another person's point of view. This will help you in sales and other circumstances in which you would like to influence others. The end of the week will be profitable. You'll attract the perfect buyer for what you have to offer. THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS: You're not afraid of conflict or risk or at least not as afraid as you used to be. For this reason, you'll dive into situations that others are too timid to take advantage of, and you'll be rewarded for your gallant effort. In November, you'll perform a duty so well that you'll be given more responsibility (and money). Someone special makes you feel like your heart has wings in the new year.

Stubbs, who was elected 15 years ago to represent the town, has received many get-well wishes from the more than 29,000 fans of his Facebook page. Women who are abused may delay seeking help if they are unable to secure their pets safety.

The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine is pioneering a program that provides up to 30 days of care for the pets of women seeking protection from domestic violence at two local shelters, according to a report in ScienceDaily.com. Student volunteers care for the pets and arrange visits between the women and their pets. The program was developed in response to a recent study showing that 34 percent of

women had delayed leaving an abuser out of concern for their pets. In other communities, shelter personnel and veterinarians can help by asking women if they need help placing pets and alerting clients to safehaven programs and emergency resources for pets. AP journalist Rachel DOro reports that Stubbs, the honorary feline mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, is recovering slowly from an Aug. 31 attack

Older cats can develop separation anxiety in the wake of a divorce or death in the family. They are often more attached to people than they are given credit for, and cats who lose owners this way may pace and cry in search of them. Other signs of separation anxiety include depression, sulking, fighting with other cats, refusing to eat, not using the litter box, spraying urine on the owners clothing and compulsive grooming behaviors, such as licking or pulling at hair until it comes out. Not all cats are loners. Some become anxious when left to their own devices. Why do cats do these things? It makes them feel better. Take spraying urine on your bedding or clothing please! Distracting Attention From a Hard-Working Kitchen

Q: Instead of taking out the

entire wall between the kitchen and dining room, the past owners who remodeled the house left a half-wall as a passthrough. I find it unnerving to have dinner guests looking in at my messy kitchen, but I've gotten to like the convenience of the pass-through.

My husband thinks we should hang louvered doors in the opening, but that really defeats the purpose. Anything else you could suggest?

A: I'd suggest borrowing an

elegant but simple idea from "Creating the Inspired

House" by John Connell (the Taunton Press). Browsing for clever solutions to sore spots in today's homes, Connell focuses on the pictured pass-through (from the cook's eye view, looking toward the dining room table). Themed as a display space for a collection of attractive ceramic

bowls and tchotchkes, the handsomely hand-crafted shelves form a grid that draws attention from the more utilitarian function of the pass-through. Dinner guests may admire the display without really looking into the "messy" kitchen beyond. Talk about sleight of hand! As with much of interior decorating, it's the ultimate effect that matters. Rose Bennett Gilbert is the coauthor of "Manhattan Style," "Hampton Style," and five other books on interior design.

Perfect Approach to Restoration is Imperfection

Q: We are redoing the kitchen in our

19th-century brownstone. We took down the wall between the kitchen and breakfast room, but now we are worried that we've spoiled the character of the old house. What kind of cabinets and fixtures should we put in to be true to the time period?

Decorating Windows Gives You the Shutters? Great Idea!

The center one will obviously be longer to the floor while the shorter side curtains leave the radiators free to go about their work. In a less formal setting, you could leave the top arches beautifully bare and substitute cotton cafe curtains below. Or consider the more architectural solution pictured, where all three windows are covered with wood-look shutters including the arches. The shutters (NewStyle hybrids from Hunter Douglas, www.hunterdouglas.com.) look like hardwood, but they are less costly and less susceptible to the heat-cold extremes near window panes the manufacturer promises. Q: How do you handle a living room with three arched windows across the side wall? To complicate matters, the center window comes all way to the floor, but the side windows are short because they're both over radiators. I'd curtain the entire wall and be done with it, but my husband says it's a mistake to muffle the heat from the radiators.

but that's no motive to let reason interfere with your aesthetics. There are any number of ways to deal with this window wall successfully, but you still must factor practicality into even the best-looking solution. If so, a "Fire and Ice" door could be fun. If not, match the inner door color to the other woodwork in your entryway. Choosing door colors is an open and shut case against eccentricity. P.S.: Remember "Fire and Ice?" I still buy it!

Suzanis, FYI, are hand embroideries traditionally made by the women in various Asian tribes, mostly in Uzbekistan but also in Afghanistan, Chippy Irvine explains. Our question is about the high 12-foot ceiling (this is an old Victorian house). We're looking for cozy, and that's hard with such a high ceiling. What do you suggest?

A: Who says you have to go

on living with that high ceiling? Not when there are relatively easy ways to bring it down ... or create the illusion that you have. Dark colors often do the trick. If you paint your ceiling deep brown, midnight blue or even black, it will appear lower. Cozily set off by decorative columns in a high-ceiling bath, a whirlpool tub boasts its own TV and fireplace. Wonderful for the country: You're helping protect our architectural heritage. Challenging for homeowners, who may be facing such an undertaking for the first time. To quote an intrepid friend, who came up delighted but dazzled from a "six-week" renovation that took nearly three years: "It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience because I am never doing that again!" But I don't mean to discourage you. There's a rainbow of rewards at the end of your project. And getting there may indeed be half the fun especially if you have a wise guide like New York designer Kathryn Scott, whose design studio helped the homeowners turn back the calendar for the pictured handsome brownstone. Built in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., in 1864, the house boasted elegant features like ornate plasterwork ceilings. But it had been built to serve family life as it was lived nearly a century-and-a-half ago. Today's lifestyle calls for open spaces and easy communication between them. So, the designer joined the work and eating areas, keeping the original fireplace and plasterwork.

She designed the new space to look like a library, Scott says, using age-appropriate materials, such as walnut cabinet fronts and restoration glass (waves and bubbles) for the sliding doors. The kitchen ceiling had been dropped during an earlier "updating," so she also brought in a plaster master to recreate the ornate overhead by copying the original ceiling over the staircase. Another way to make the new feel old: Find hardware with an antique finish. "Not lacquered," she insists. "You want the finish to wear off slowly, just like the real thing. Hardware should change with time and take on a life of its own." The keyword is "character," Scott says. "You don't want to be perfect." That is not always an easy concept for her clients to accept, the designer confides. "It often takes agonizing on the clients part before they can see that imperfections add character and are more beautiful and interesting." See more of Scott's work at www.kathrynscott.com.

Want to Bring Down the House?...

Continued from page 6 You might also consider a strongly patterned wallpaper on the ceiling has the same effect as a dark color. Ditto for dark exposed beams and low hanging lights, all of which make the ceiling more omnipresent in the mind's eye. Even more dramatic, borrow designer Peggy Helgeson's imposing idea for the high-ceiling pictured master bath. She created a room-withina-room, adding arches and decorative posts to set the tub off from the rest of the bath. Sunk in a marble-topped surround, the tub becomes the centerpiece of the bath, an environment that's all about "personal indulgences" it has its own TV and fireplace set into the dividing wall. Helgeson's clients had nurtured their dream house for years, she reports, "and were finally able to build it with everything they ever wanted." That includes posh materials, such as those marble countertops and real hardwood cabinetry from Wood-Mode (www.woodmode.com), also the source of the decorative columns and wide mouldings.

Standing Room Only? Ideas to the Rescue

Rose Bennett Gilbert

Q: Our living room/dining

room is not very large, so we bring the dining chairs from the table into the living area when we have extra guests. I can't help but think that it looks like some kind of prayer meeting. All those legs!

We have a three-seater sofa and two armless chairs in the living "room," but maybe there's another way to provide extra seating when we need it?

A: You are not alone with

your problem: smallish rooms especially rooms that do double-duty like living and dining need solutions that go beyond the usual sofa-chair categories. Furniture manufacturers have responded with clever solutions, such as low stools that stow under cocktail tables and storage benches that also make for sturdy seating. Sectional sofas are another smart answer. Angle a sectional so it embraces the cocktail table, and you multiply seating opportunities exponentially no arms to limit the number of sitters who can fit on the "L." Interior designer Gail ShieldsMiller has yet another answer: ottomans. Like you, she dislikes seeing all those chair legs in a room. Instead, she says, "I love ottomans. I'm an ottoman freak!" Touch of the wild: Zebra print ottoman adds extra seating and extra umph to a smallish living room. Photo courtesy of Peter Rymwid. Shields-Miller's prefers big ottomans, too, as you can see in the pictured living room. The large zebra-print ottoman is always on hand for extra seating. Moreover, it fulfills the designer's credo: She's known for mixing styles and periods. In her rooms, colors don't match on purpose. "Matching makes a room look like a hotel!" Shields-Miller insists. Hence, the horizontally striped curtains made of a synthetic fabric that poufs like crinoline do not match the taupe-gray sofa, which does not match the rug, which has a suggestion of orange. And the rug definitely does not match the pillows tossed on the sofa: "like adding lipstick it's bold but not in your face!" How to cultivate that captivating near-miss at home? "Take out the Benjamin Moore swatch of the color you like and go down or up two steps. It will bring your room alive." Learn more at shieldsinteriors.com.

All that wood in a bath, you might ask? Thank today's protective wood finishes. New surface coatings render wood all but impervious to normal bathroom moisture. That goes for wood floors in a bath, too, as long as you don't leave puddles standing around for long.

Rx for the Color-Phobic

Q: My house is just plain dull. It's

because I grew up with only beiges and neutrals. My mother was a child of the Depression and thought everything she bought had to last forever, meaning no color to "get tired of." My midlife crisis is about wanting color, but at the same time I don't know how to handle it. Can you help my phobia?

But we're not talking Malcolm Gladwell's l0,000 hours that's what it takes to become a pro yourself. You just need to invest time enough to feel both excited by and at-ease in an environment that jumps with color. "High punch color" is what Amanda Nisbet calls it in her new book, "Dazzling Design" (Stewart, Tabori and Chang). Browse a few pages, and you'll begin to tingle, I promise, with the sheer fun of unexpected color used in unexpected places. Like the vivid purple library we show here. No need to whisper, "Quiet, please." The colors may dance and patterns dazzle the eyes, but the net effect is calming and contemplative, as befits a room devoted to reading, relaxing and thinking. For another super color-infusion, get your hands on designer Jamie Drake's book, "New American Glamour" (Bullfinch Publishers). Although he seems to have given up wearing be-

Nisbet cautions, "using strong saturations of color requires the utmost discernment. ... It can be a high-wire act," the designer admits, "but if you can keep your balance, the effect is transformative." Yet another word of advice from a top designer, Mario Buatta, whose sevenpound tome, "Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration" is due out this month from Rizzoli. Mario urges his color-phobic clients "to buy art," he told an adoring audience at the annual "What's New/What's Next" event at the New York Design Center last month. Art is a way of introducing color into a room. Art is color. It can be lifechanging. Rose Bennett Gilbert is the co-author of "Manhattan Style," and six other books on interior design.

afternoon to curl up with a couple of good books by interior designers who revel in Color! with a capital C and an exclamation point! The pros may have been born with extra rods and cones, but amateurs can learn color, just as you can learn to dance or play a good game of tennis. The key as with everything you want to do well is practice, practice, practice.

Speaking of purple prose, in this ladylike library the cry is for a really vivid hue. Making Space for Sleepovers

Rose Bennett Gilbert

Mastering the Mix of Color and Pattern

Rose Bennett Gilbert

Q: We are looking for more sleepover

space in our country house. We have four children who constantly invite friends up, and I've grown weary of sleeping bodies on the living room sofas. We are thinking of building a half-wall in the upstairs hall and stuffing a bed behind it. There must be other solutions?

Q: I relate to that person who

wrote about growing up in a bland white and beige house. Like her, I now want color and pattern in my life, but I have no clue how to go about mixing things up. I'm not afraid to use just one color and one pattern and leave everything else neutral. But I'd like a lot! Are there any tricks to mixing several patterns together?

medium-sized plaid with several stripes that vary in width, plus a mini-geometric and some solid colors in a variety of surface textures, just for the fun of it. To perfect their mix of patterns, professional designers work up a swatch board, using goodsized cuts of fabrics and wall coverings. By standing back and eyeing them altogether, even a beginner can see if they get on well or if they don't. The photo we show here should help. Known for his down-home farmhouse-style, designer Terry John Woods has gone off on an interesting new tact in his latest book, "Farmhouse Modern" (Stewart, Tabori and Chang), wherein he updates his relaxed, rustic rooms with surprisingly contemporary touches. Here he transforms his home office into a modern space with a couple of genius strokes: a dramatically overscaled wallpaper pattern that plays a background role to an equally dramatic (but smaller) geometric pattern on the lamp shade. Note that they share the same color palette. And there in a nutshell, you have the secret of mixing patterns successfully.
COPYRIGHT 2013 CREATORS.COM

A: If I weren't sure you've already

thought of them, I'd mention sleep sofas and Murphy beds, both time-tested solutions to sleep-space shortages. Your hall half-wall sounds creative and doable. It might also discourage some of your young guests (at least those who've read Poe's "Cask of Amontillado," wherein a man immures another behind a brick wall in the wine cellar). Guests at Terry John Woods' country house in Maine would be luckier. The designer/author offers a friendlier solution to housing guests, seen in this photo borrowed from Woods' handsome new book, "Farmhouse Modern" (Stewart, Tabori and Chang). It, too, is in an upstairs hall that is just wide enough to accommodate a mattress on top of a low storage unit. Framed-in and hung with a heavy curtain, the sleeping nook is fairly private. It's certainly attractive, with its linen damask fabric and interior decoration including a naive portrait hung in lieu of an ordinary headboard.

A: Oh, yes. And happily, once you get over your fear they are not hard to learn.
Easiest route to a successful mix of patterns: Let a professional do it for you. There's a wealth of home fashions coordinates on today's market. The pros have already taken the worry out of putting a room together by creating entire collections, including wall coverings, fabrics, even rugs and pillows, that work perfectly together. Doing it yourself is no mystery, either, once you discover the magic formula: Choose patterns that have a common color denominator. As long as they share a prominent hue and vary enough in scale, many different patterns can co-exist beautifully say, a large floral and a

Which is every winter to ever more exotic places, like Nepal and India India was in the spotlight at the Design Center; Wolf paired with Stephanie Odegard, the remarkable former Peace Corps volunteer who has become the go-to source for rugs and custom furniture handmade the traditional way in India and Nepal. Thanks to Wolf and Stephanie, we Westerners can live at ease with exotica from the East: rugs woven of Himalayan wool "the world's best wool," according to Stephanie tables and jali (window screens) carved from a single piece of marble and carved teak chests skinned in bronze, brass, copper or silver. And then there's that Indian palette, colors to knock your socks off as it did Wolf's on his first visit. "I went to India to get jolted out of black and neutrals," the New York-based designer said. At the time, he was working on a line of colors for Pittsburgh Paint, and India added a high-decibel kick: "The Indians have such freedom about mixing colors! Even the women street sweepers wear bright yellow and pink saris!" But will it play in Peoria? Wolf thinks maybe so. "People have gotten so much more sophisticated," he vowed. "Color and exotic pieces are no longer scary."

A: Top designer Vicente Wolf has a good

suggestion: Before you buy anything, try to decide how you will fit it into your home life, he told a packed house at the New York Design Center's "What's New/What's Next" event last week. "When I'm traveling, I try to look at objects as something I can decorate with, not as souvenirs," Vicente said. As a mega-designer to millionaires and bold-face names, he is shopping for more than his own home when he travels.

Their second big outing came in the form of 'Oxford', a collaboration with Dutch talent Julian Jordan which was released on the Spinnin' Records imprint. Their next original was 'TOM', a powerful electro bomb which reached the upper regions of the Beatport Electro chart. 'Kill The Radio' followed mid November 2012. Later on they remixed Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano's take on Tiesto's classic 'Lethal Industry' with great success. Early 2013 the madness reached an even higher intensity level when they were asked by Christina Aguilera's management to officially remix 'Let There Be Love'. Defending Cup champion Brad Keselowski gets first win of 2013 with victory at Charlotte
Defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski finally got his first Cup win of the 2013 season, as he bounced back from an early pit miscue to race past Kasey Kahne with nine laps remaining and win Saturdays Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The victory, the 10th of Keselowskis Cup career, came too late to help him in the championship hunt, as he missed the cut for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. He and Tony Stewart, in 2005-06, are the only two drivers in the history of the Chase to win the championship one year and fail to make the Chase the following year. Keselowskis victory also put him in rather select company, as hes now one of just 11 non-Chase drivers to win a Chase race since the new championship format was adopted in 2004. Its happened a total of 16 times, and the last to do it before Keselowski was Kahne, at Phoenix in 2011. Behind Keselowski on the track at Charlotte and far ahead of him in the points standings, the top two championship contenders, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, battled to a virtual tie, with Kenseth finishing third and Johnson fourth. As the Chase heads into its sixth race, at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, Kenseth leads Johnson by four points, with Kevin Harvick a way to win, so that was very special. Keselowski also acknowledged that his teams shortcomings this season include some on the drivers part. I think I can do a better job, he said. I look back at a couple races the Daytonas and Talladegas I dont think I executed like I needed to. Ironically, Keselowskis Charlotte victory came at the expense of Johnson, who was cruising at the head of the pack when a caution flag for debris allowed the leaders to pit and gave Keselowski a chance to win. Johnson slipped on the restart, opening the door for Keselowski to move up and take the victory. Last year at Charlotte, it was Keselowski cruising at the front when a yellow flag foiled his chances for victory. Without that yellow we probably wouldnt have had an opportunity to win the race, but last year without the yellow that came out, we probably would have won the race, he said. Its funny how that works. I was thinking of that as I was pulling in to Victory Lane.

Brad Keselowski celebrates in Victory Lane at Charlotte Motor Speedway. a fairly distant third, 29 points out of the lead. But for Keselowski, it was a win that showed that his No. 2 Ford team is one of the sports elite, even if its not among the current championship contenders. The perception is, and rightfully so, that the guys that are in the Chase are the cream of the crop, Keselowski said. Thats how, obviously, they would make it in the Chase, and they should win races, and probably sweep the Chase, but this is a very good team. He pointed out that his team has had a number of misfortunes this season, which kept him out of the top 13. But along the way, all season long, weve had the speed, weve had what we need to be a championship team, we just havent put them all together, he said. All the pieces havent come together on the nights that count, and they did, for the most part [at Charlotte]. He did have one close call on Saturday, when the jack became stuck under his car after an early pit stop and he had to return to the pits and have it removed, which put him 35th in the running order at that point. There have been weeks where weve had the speed and execution and weve just had some rotten luck, he said. Its just been kind of one of those years where you say, How much more can they throw at you? I think we ran out of things for them to throw at us with the jack and still find

Volkswagen gets in the hybrid game with the Jetta By Christopher A. Randazzo
When it comes to building cars, next to safety, most automakers say delivering the best fuel economy is their primary focus. While most manufactures have gone the hybrid route (or even all electric), Volkswagen has long been on the diesel path proving you can get good gas mileage without sacrificing power when using diesel engines. But with Volkswagen on a quest to be the world's largest automaker, they have realized there is a large market for hybrids cars. So while for years you can get a gasoline powered Jetta or a diesel powered Jetta, you can now opt for the all-new hybrid powered Jetta. The 2013 Jetta Hybrid is Volkswagen's second hybrid vehicle (the first being the Touareg Hybrid) but the first hybrid to incorporate a turbocharger and dual-clutch transmission. This gives the Jetta Hybrid a rating of 42 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway, beating out its diesel counterpart which gets 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway. The Prius, the benchmark of hybrids, gets 51 mpg / city and 48 mpg highway. The gas-electric Jettas hardware consists of a 1.4 liter tur-

Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer and Marcos Ambrose. Regular Nationwide Series drivers with race wins this season: Sam Hornish Jr. and Trevor Bayne have one each, and Regan Smith has two, with Sprint Cup regulars taking the rest.

bocharged four-cylinder engine and a 27-hp electric motor. Total horsepower is about 170, which is sent to the front wheels by way of Volkswagens seven-speed DSG, or Direct Shift Gearbox. The use of a turbocharged engine and dual-clutch transmission makes it easy to forget you are driving a hybrid. The turbocharged four is smooth and quiet much like the popular 2.0 Turbo we see in other Volkswagens. And while most hybrids make use of boring CVT transmissions, I applaud VW for sticking with a real gearbox with the seven speed DSG. This new Jetta is like most hyrbids - in regular driving, the gas engine stops and starts frequently. But with the Jetta Hybrid the restarts are so smooth, the go mostly unnoticed. Volk-

swagen says the Jetta Hybrid can reach 37 mph on electricity alone, but you have to be extremely stingy with the gas pedal and have tons of patience. In real world driving, I found I could hit 15 mph before the gas engine would kick in. For those that are extremely frugal, tap the E button just ahead of the shifter to further save on fuel. This recalibrates the accelerator so that the gas engine rarely comes on below 44 mph. It works, but I could barely cover a mile before the car switched out of E mode to replenish its batteries. About those batteries they are mounted in the Jettas trunk, but hardly seem to take up much room as it is still respectably sized. Continues on next page

Ryan Reed signs with Roush Fenway Racing for 2014 Nationwide Series
Ryan Reed has signed on to drive the No. 16 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing full time next year in the Nationwide Series. Hell do so with sponsorship from Lilly Diabetes, which is promoting the American Diabetes Associations Drive to Stop Diabetes. Its a fitting sponsorship as Reed, a 19-year-old short-track driver from Bakersfield, Calif., was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in February 2011. This has all the right parts, and to be included in that is unreal for me as a driver and someone living with diabetes, Reed said. I just want to play a small part in helping stop diaReed said he understands that hes a role model for others hoping to overcome medical challenges and excel in sports. I just want to drive race cars, he said. I want to stay healthy as a person, so I can compete at the highest level, and thats what is important to me. I have such a passion for giving back and being that role model that I would never jeopardize it in a million years because its something that Im blessed to have. Reed has run four Nationwide races for Roush this season, with a best run of ninth at Richmond last month, and an average finish of 16.2.

Volkswagen Jetta...
Continued from page 18

As a fan of diesel-powered Volkswagens, I find myself torn between the Jetta Hybrid and the Jetta TDI (diesel). The Jetta Hybrid is easily one of the best driving hybrids around and a great alternative for those that think the Prius and Insight are just flat out too boring. But I do miss the punch and gobs of torque that the diesel engines provide. But if its fuel economy youre after, then the Jetta Hybrid is the way to go. Either way, its great to see Volkswagen giving us such great choices. By The Numbers:

Inside the Jetta Hybrid is a cabin that is simple yet comfortable. All Jettas for 2013 benefit from a soft touch dash and an updated trip computer. As with all Volkswagens, the controls are all easy to use and the build quality is top-notch. Every seat in the Jetta Hybrid can hold a full-size adult comfortably. For the driver, the tachometer has been replaced with a power meter and there is a screen that shows the power flow between the gas engine, electric motor and front wheels.
