GAVIN NEWSOM ENDORSES FLETCHER FOR MAYOR

California Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom has endorsed Nathan Fletcher for mayor -- the second endorsement this week from a California official elected statewide; Tom Torlakson, the State Superintendent for Public Instruction, endorsed Fletcher on Tuesday. I am proud to endorse Nathan Fletcher to become the next mayor of San Diego. Nathan has demonstrated the ability to bring people together to move San Diego forward and has put in the hard work to be effective and create results, Newsom said. When it comes to fixing streets and sidewalks, or improving 911 response times, Nathan Fletcher is the right person for the job. With his strong focus on creating jobs in California, Newsoms endorsement was a natural fit. Newsom also understands the challenges of leading a great city, Fletcher said. Im honored to have the support of Lt. Gov. Newsom, who, as the former San Francisco mayor, knows the importance of basic city services, Fletcher said. "I'm also happy to add another leading California Democrat as a supporter in my campaign for mayor of San Diego." Since launching his campaign last month, Fletcher has earned the endorsement of a number of local, state and federal elected leaders, including Congressmembers Juan Vargas and Scott Peters, Assembly Speaker John Perez and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, State Sens. Marty Block and Ben Hueso, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, Chula Vista Councilmember Mary Salas, Escondido Deputy Mayor Olga Diaz, Southwestern College Governing Board President Humberto Peraza, Sweetwater Authority Chair Jose Preciado, and former San Diego County Democratic Party Chair Jess Durfee, as well as 16 state Legislators with whom Fletcher served during his time in the Assembly. Also backing Fletcher are the citys firefighters, police officers, lifeguards and white-collar workers; Biocom; the California Small Business Association; Union Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 230; the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters; Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 89; UNITE HERE Local 30; United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Providers; the National Electrical Contractors Association; a coalition of interfaith clergy representing San Diegos underserved neighborhoods; and the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors.
