No Copy! - Originals
We want your participation at the trade fair to be successful. It is important to ensure that
everything goes smoothly, not only from the point of view of organization, but also from
a legal point of view. We are particularly concerned about protecting your rights and want
to assist you as much as possible in any action you might take against product piracy. This
guide is intended to provide initial assistance. Should we receive a specific indication of an
existing or threatened infringement of property rights, we write to exhibitors before the
trade fair to refer to the conditions of participation and to inform them of the legal conse-
quences of property right infringements. However, since we ourselves are not the holders
of the industrial property rights, we cannot enforce your rights against third parties for you.
Finally, Koelnmesse reserves the right to exclude exhibitors who have been the
subject of a court decision on product piracy from participating in the sub-
sequent trade fair. However, a requirement for their exclusion is that there is
a certain risk of repetition of the offense. To download the full brochure on

Shows Have Bigger
Payoff!
Trade shows are an even more cost-effective forum to identify leads and
close deals than the Center for Exhibition Industry Research has reported.

After reviewing the data for “The Cost Effectiveness of Exhibition Partici-
pation,” a two-part study released by Dallas-based CEIR earlier this year,
M&C discovered a calculation error that inflated the reported cost of iden-
tifying prospects and closing sales at trade shows by 5.4 percent.

The published report stated that the average cost to identify a prospect
and close a sale using exhibitions is $2,307.19. But following an inquiry
from M&C, researchers admitted the number should be $2,188.40. With-
out using exhibitions, the average cost to generate a lead and close a sale
is $3,102.10, according to the study.

Dr. Matthew T. Brown, a University of South Carolina researcher who worked on the study and recalculated the numbers, noted
that “the results still stay in the two-to-three ratio that CEIR has been publishing.”

The study was based on a survey completed by 214 sales managers and executives from companies that have annual sales in
excess of $50 million. Results varied widely, so researchers plugged averages into their formula, including the number of prospects
identified per show (295), the number of salespeople staffing each show (6.74) and the average salary of a salesperson ($77,566).

The results also indicated that leads generated via exhibitions are often of greater quality than those generated by the use of
other methods.

Carbon TradeEx America 2009 was the most comprehensive

industry event in the U.S. connecting climate policy, carbon
markets, energy security, low carbon technology, and the green
economic recovery. The event connected industry thought leaders,
senior decision-makers, and practitioners interested in one of the
biggest policy priorities of the new Obama Administration. Carbon

Value-Added Tax
Germany’s VAT is 19 percent. Food brought into the country is charged at a lower 7-percent
rate. VAT is reimbursable, but there is considerable paperwork, and it could take months to
obtain a refund. The refund application must be received by the Federal Central Tax Office
within six months of the end of the calendar year in which the tax was incurred. Please visit Koeln-
messenafta.com for some helpful links on how to obtain reimbursement of your VAT.

Music Rights
Contact the German Society for Musical Performing and Mechanical Reproduction Rights
(GEMA) in order to pay royalties and obtain the proper licenses for any music you plan to
play in your exhibit during the trade show. The German authorities do enforce and check
compliance during the trade show! (http://www.gema.de)

Garbage
Order booth cleaning through show services prior to the show.
You will need to order disposal for build-and-burn exhibits. Germany has special green fees depending on the
type of trash to be disposed of by the contractor. Ask your exhibit builder for more information.

Smoking
Smoking is forbidden in German exhibit halls(during the show), but there are designated smoking areas outside each exhibit hall.

Voltage
Exhibition halls throughout Germany use 220 V.
Germans use round, two-prong electrical plugs, so you will need to bring adaptors and transformers for any
electrical equipment you plan to use or display in your booth.
