INDUSTRY & MARKET PLACE ANALYSIS

Industry Summary
It is unfortunate that most organizations in Nigeria are still dragging their feet when it
comes to training and developing their employees. They still do not see the need to
“waste” scarce funds that should be used to provide other facilities for the organization
on the training of people. This is more so when they are not even sure the staff will not
leave just after the training and so at the slightest strain on their budget, training budget is
the first to be cut.

The good news however is that globalization has open the eyes of many business owners
and they are now beginning to realize that except they do what their counterparts in
developed countries are doing they may never be able to compete with them.

The biggest training market in Nigeria is the public sector, This year 2004 the federal
civil service has budgeted 20% of its recurrent salutatory allocation to human capital
development, this is valued to be in excess of about N30 million – N35 million, this is
followed by the private sector whose estimated training market is in the range of less than
N 50 million, the smallest training market in Nigeria is the informal sector that
demonstrate the most lackadaisical attitude to training and development, the market size
is estimated to be less than N 15 million.

A new development in the training market in Nigeria is the entrance of foreign donor and
development agencies like the United State Agency for International Development
(USAID) and the British government funded Department for International Development
(DFID) that plans to inject at least N 150 million in training and development projects in
Nigerian in the next one to three years.
