Giving Thanks W trosce o odpoczynek

Many self-help books have been written over the years in
which the author highly advocates the use of "to-do lists" in
order to help us gain control over our lives. Generally, they say
we will feel encouraged as we strike off the different things on
our lists as we accomplish them. But what I have never seen
any of these so-called experts advocate is creating a "done list"
in which we take time each day to quietly reflect on all that we
have achieved, no matter how small. When we cross things off
a to-do list, we tend to say, "Thank God that's done." But when
we look at a done list, we might be more tempted to say,
"Thanks, God, for your help."
Jesus was trying to give his disciples a rest and a time for
reflection and prayer in today's
Gospel reading from Mark.
They had returned from teach-
ing throughout the area and
were excited to tell him all they
had accomplished, but at the
same time Jesus felt they
needed solitude to reflect and
give thanks in prayer for all they had done. Still, the many peo-
ple of the area searching for peace in their lives kept coming to
them, the lost sheep of God's flock.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus often draws away from his
disciples to pray in silence and solitude. And when he does, he
includes each and every one of us in his prayers. He became
flesh and blood to give himself in sacrifice for us; he experi-
enced our pain and suffering in order to free us from that pain
(CCC 2602). Few of us can remember much of any self-help
book we've ever read, and rarely if ever do we go back to them.
Yet the word of God remains, ready to be reflected upon again
and again. Doing so prayerfully is to give thanks.

Jednym z najprostszych sprawdzianów prawdziwej miłości jest
troska o odpoczynek osoby kochanej. Jak długo mąż dostrzega zmę-
czenie żony, jak długo interesuje się jej samopoczuciem, tak długo
autentycznie kocha. Istota zaś tego zainteresowania polega na tym, że
natychmiast spieszy z pomocą i gotów jest organizować godziny wy-
tchnienia. Bywa, że trzeba to czynić kosztem własnego czasu, wła-
snych sił, ale zawsze jest to czyn radosny, czyn prawdziwej miłości.
Chrystus objawia nam miłość zatroskaną o odpoczynek swych
uczniów, gdy w dniach szczególnego zmęczenia wzywa: „Pójdźcie wy
sami osobno na miejsce pustynne i wypocznijcie nieco!”. W ewange-
licznej szkole opanowanie sztuki mądrego odpoczynku musi być zapro-
gramowane. Praktyka wskazuje na to, że jest to jedna z tych umiejęt-
ności, którą u Boga trudno zaliczyć na bardzo dobry. Znacznie łatwiej
przychodzi opanowanie solidności w pracy, a nawet sztuki dobrej mo-
dlitwy, niż mądrego odpoczynku. Nie spotkałem jeszcze ani jednej
dobrej książki, która uczyłaby odpoczynku w duchu Ewangelii. Umiejęt-
ność odpoczywania i organizowania odpoczynku dla innych stanowi
istotny element miłości bliźniego. Znacznie łatwiej zachować spokój
w sytuacjach trudnych, gdy człowiek dysponuje świeżymi siłami, niż
wówczas gdy pada ze zmęczenia. To prawdziwa miłość wzywa do
troski o własny odpoczynek, byśmy mogli być dla ludzi dobrzy, i troski
o ich odpoczynek, by oni mogli być dobrzy dla innych. Nie chodzi tu
o wielkie wyjazdy na wczasy, które często są utrudnieniem a nie odpo-
czynkiem. Chodzi o godziny snu, o kilkugodzinny spacer, o relaks,
który pomaga w odnalezieniu siebie i spojrzeniu na całość aktualnych
zadań z pewnej perspektywy. Najgroźniejszym przeciwnikiem odpo-
czynku we współczesnym świecie jest przeliczanie godzin oddechu na
pieniądze, jakie w tym czasie można zarobić. Jest to spojrzenie bardzo
krótkowzroczne. Mądry odpoczynek ma wielki wpływ nie tylko na od-
niesienie do innych ludzi, lecz również na wydajność pracy. Opłaca się
zatem zarówno z punktu widzenia dobrej atmosfery między ludźmi, jak
i z punktu widzenia ekonomicznego. Warto się o tym przekonać. Aby
refleksja nad wypoczynkiem nie była tylko słowem, spróbujmy
w najbliższych dniach, dla swoich bliskich, zorganizować chwilę odpo-
czynku. Niech to będzie ta forma oddechu, którą oni sami najbardziej
lubią.

Lessons from the Desert
Majestic in its simplicity, a Saguaro cactus can stretch to fifty
feet in height and weigh several tons. Found nowhere else on
earth, Saguaros grow in the southwestern United States and
northwestern Mexico. Some have been growing since 1901.
The distinctive human-like arms begin extending only in mid-
dle age, around 75 years, after achieving a height of 14-16 feet.
The pleats of the cactus expand to retain water on which the
Saguaro lives during droughts, with shallow roots close to the
soil's surface capturing even the slightest rainfall. Saguaros can
lose up to 82 percent of their moisture before dying of dehydra-
tion.
They first blossom when fifty to sixty years old, and do so for
only one night. Crown-like clusters of creamy white flowers
bloom near the ends of branches. These short-lived flowers,
with an aroma similar to overripe melon, open fully by midnight.
Saguaros are a wonder of survival, providing food for kanga-
roo rats, squirrels, pocket mice and woodpeckers and offering
shelter for finches, martins and owls. Saguaro seeds, some-
times numbering more than two thousand in an individual fruit,
give the cactus forty million-to-one odds in favor of reproducing
and a baby Saguaro born today could be standing tall in 2200.
Jesus instructs his followers to come away with him into the
desert. There is more to be found there than they can imagine.
Although not in a land where giant Saguaros dwell, perhaps the
message of these mystical-like desert giants can help enlighten
disciples of Jesus, including us.
Disciples need patience-it takes time to stretch into wisdom.
Be generous in offering your gifts to others-you may be capable
of offering more nourishment than you think. Fold up when nec-
essary for you too are valuable and giving away too much can
lead to your demise. Above all, be sure to bloom no matter how
long it takes and no matter how short it lasts, for your bloom

Today we celebrate James “the Greater,”
not be be confused with James “the Lesser”;
that is, the younger, to whom is attributed a
beautiful letter in the New Testament.
The James we honor today is the brother of
the apostle John, one of the “sons of thunder” (Mark 3”17) who
are privileged witnesses of Jesus’ wonders – the raising of the
daughter of Jairus, the Transfiguration, the agony in the garden.
James was the first apostle to suffer martyrdom, slain by
Herod’s orders as described in the Acts of the Apostles. Ac-
cording to legend, his remains were carried away by his friends
in a rudderless boat, which drifted all the way to Spain. Many
centuries later they were discovered, and a great cathedral was
built over the spot – Santiago de Compostela – which became
one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in the Middle
Ages. To this day, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make their
way to that remote corner of Spain to venerate the relics of
