Mineral Identification Report

_________________________________________________________________________. 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Your mineral name here

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? yes, because

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. Materials: -Mineral -Streak Plate -Senses -computer 1. Mr. Finan gave me a mineral. 2. I looked up blue and white mineral 3. I researched minerals I found 4. I looked for more minerals -internet - fingers -Knowledge of mineral identification - hardness test 5. I researched those 6. I found one that I was sure of 7. I put down what I found 8. Then I presented what I did to the class

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the scientific method to find out what the mineral is 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). I predict that my mineral will be either sodalite, or lazurite. 4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

Type your paragraph here

In science, I used the scientific method to figure out what a mystery mineral was. My procedure was that Mr. Finan gave me a mineral, and then I did some experiments to see what it really was. I did a steak test and a hardness test to see the details about my mineral. Then I looked at some links on Mr. Finans website. After looking throughout all those websites, I made a hypothesis that my mineral was Sodalite. The hypothesis was correct. My mineral's color was blue and white; the hardness was 5.5-6, that helped a lot when looking through websites to find my mineral. The mineral I had also had an odd cleavage to it that also helped me to find my mineral. What helped me the most to find my mineral was the color, streak, and hardness of my mineral because there were not a lot of minerals that are blue and white with that hardness and streak that began with 'so,' so that helped a lot. Therefore, in the end you can use the scientific method to figure out a mystery mineral.

7. Communicate your results. Post this report and your Data Sheet where people can see it !
