Bears Still Have Knights Number

STANWOOD The North Cedar Knights came into Friday nights game at home against West Branch coming off of a heartbreaking 46-45 overtime loss to Tipton. West Branch came into the game off of a 47-46 overtime win over Sigourney-Keota. The two teams have a brief history with each other with the Bears holding a 4-0 advantage in four games. Friday, West Branch increased that number by one, 5 wins-0 losses, after a 35-35 victory. The win was West Branchs third straight after a 2-2 start to the season. Those three games have WB scoring 35 points or more in those games. North Cedars slide continued as North Cedar fell to 5-2 with two tough district games ahead to end the regular season. West Branch nearly doubled up the Knights in total offense with 400 yards to North Cedars 226. North Cedar had only 16 yards rushing, a season low to add to 210 yards passing. Derrick Gray rushed for 19 yards on six carries to lead North Cedar. Jayden Johnson passed for 210 yards on 27-of-44 pass completions. He scored both North Cedar touchdowns on short runs. Jacob Hay caught 11 passes for 109 yards. Michael Gould was tough to stop for the Knights in the game, rushing for a season high 177 yards on 33 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Gould has five, 100-yard plus games this season after Fridays effort. Gould scored twice in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 11 and 4 to give West Branch a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter. A Lucas Lamont 4-yard run gave West Branch a 21-0 lead before North Cedar finally got on the scoreboard. Jayden Johnsons 4-yard run put the score at 21-7 and later, an Oliver Skov-Thuesen 27-yard field goal put the score at 21-10. That would be as close as North Cedar could get in the game however after the Bears had built their lead. West Branch added a score right before halftime on a Lucas Lamont 31-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Donovan to put the score at 28-10 at halftime. West Branch led 35-10 after three quarters. The Knights added a late touchdown to put the final at 35-17.

Pirates Snap Four-Game Skid, 47-13

DURANT The Alburnett Pirates wrecked the homecoming night of the Durant Wildcats last Friday, beating them 47-13 in a class 1A district 5 match up. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pirates. Durant trailed only 14 to 7 after the first quarter, but 33 unanswered points put the Wildcats in a big 47-7 hole that they could not dig out from. The Wildcats scored their first points in the first quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Alex Rouse to Nick Keimig. Nathan Paulsen kicked the extra point to get the score to 14-7. The kids played hard and it was a tough loss, said Durant coach Greg White. Our team is far better than our record shows and I could not be more proud of my players for not giving up and continue to play hard the entire game, he said. Alburnett scored the only points of the second quarter to take a 20-7 lead at halftime but two touchdowns in the third quarter gave the Pirates a 34-7 lead after three quarters. Durant did score before the final horn sounded on a 9-yard Conrad Hoover touchdown run. Hoover rushed for 39 yards on six carries in the game. White said that his team has not packed it in or given up the season despite no wins and only two more chances to get an elusive victory. I loved the way our kids played hard till the end. We didnt quit, said White. We need to continue to work to fix our mistakes and continue to get better as players and coaches. Our coaching staff and team is committed to continue to work hard to keep getting better, he said. Alburnett rushed for 202 yards in the game and passed for 185 yards for 387 yards of total offense. Dylan Miller rushed for 72 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Miller was one of three Pirates to score on a rushing touchdown in the game. Alec Phillip passed for 150 yards on 8-of-13 completions with 4 touchdown passes. Bryce Paul was his top receiver with three receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Kolton Rose also caught three passes and had 62 receiving yards and scored once. Defensively, Connor Shulista had 11 tackles while Austn Hoyle and Dylan Winfield each had 8 for Alburnett. Durant rushed for 150 yards and passed for 70 yards in the football game. Wyatt Helmle rushed for 68 yards on eight carries while Conrad Hoover rushed for 39 yards on six carries and scored a touchdown. Nick Keimig scored a touchdown and rushed for 18 yards on six carries. Alex Rouse passed for 70 yards and Alik Lorenz had one reception for 62 yards. Henry Hansen caught two passes for 8 yards. Defensively, Jay Randolph and Brandon Dykes led the Wildcats in tackles with 13 each. Mac Humphreys had 10. Durant will play at home this Friday in their home finale against rival Wilton. The Beavers fell to topranked Iowa City Regina last Friday night at home and will look to get back on the winning path. We play another one of the top ranked teams in Wilton next week so it doesnt get any easier, but our players are up for the challenge and we will work hard this week in

practice preparing for Wilton. It is a great rivalry game each year and our team is excited to be a part of it, said White. Alburnett looks to make a run to the playoffs with a game with Bellevue this week. If the Pirates can win over the Comets and Tipton falls at Maquoketa Valley this week, the two teams would play for a winner-take-all game in Tipton on October 25 with the winner advancing to the playoffs and the losers season ending.
