Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association President David Durham said the 2013 event will also appeal to quilting enthusiasts with the Bacchus Marsh Friendship Quilters hosting an exhibition at The Laurels, along with the Blacksmith Cottage who will hold an Airing of the Quilts. Our visitors will take home the memories of our beautiful event weekend, as well as multiple reasons to return on a regular basis over the following weeks and months. $izzling $eat
By Kate Taylor Viewers of Channel Nines Millionaire Hot Seat show may have spotted a familiar local face last week. Ballan resident Deryck Carruthers, 35, won $50,000 on the show, aired last week and filmed last month. It was his second shot at the money. He had appeared on the show four years ago, and was invited back for a special show held with previous contestants who had answered between eight and 14 questions correctly, but had walked away with nothing. According to Eddie I answered nine in a row the first time. And didnt win anything I bombed out, Deryck said. But the second time was different. Deryck found himself playing for $50,000 and had to answer the question of which movie Tom Hanks won an Oscar for other than Philadelphia. He chose Forrest Gump. I was pretty confident, but when youre under the pressure you always second guess yourself, Im ninetynine per cent sure but Im waiting for Eddie to say the right thing. Deryck already had a European holiday booked when he won the money, and so is being practical with how he is going to spend the windfall. Im looking at solar panels, water tanks - anything to keep the monthly payments down is what Im thinking about.

Tasting success
Moorabool dining venues have impressed judges at a recent foodie awards night in Ballarat. Burkes on Main and The Plough Bistro were recipients of a Golden Plate Award, which is a reliable guide for people looking for great places to eat out in the Central Highlands Region. An independent panel of judges went to each venue twice without notice, over several months, to evaluate the premise with up to 40 factors taken into account. The Plough Bistro in Myrniong won the category of - Restaurant Relaxed Contemporary Dining, with owner/chef Mark Mills saying every dish, every order is regarded as an opportunity to impress and delight the consumer of that meal. For me, The Plough is all about the community of people I require to open each and every day of service. I could never achieve my expectations without the support from my family, friends, my dedicated and food-loving staff, my individually chosen passionate suppliers, my loyal and devoted customers, as well as my peers within my industry an industry that I have grown with for over 30 years, he said. One judge said the owners of the Plough have turned a rough diamond into a lovely, warm gem of a restaurant that appeals to all. It was an enjoyable experience to sit and observe Above: Mark Mills from the Plough Inn and Below: Annette the other diners as they ate and drank with great Burke from Burkes on Main. Photos Helen Tatchell enthusiasm, dining generously and appreciating the good food, ambience and service. First impressions count and Annette Burke from Burkes on Main restaurant was awarded a Golden Plate for Outstanding Front of House Person. I was shocked when we won, I still am! We are thrilled and humbled by the nomination and the award of course, but honestly, it is something we didnt think we would receive, we are very pleased. Annette and husband Paul are no strangers to winning a Golden Plate, they received a Best Customer Service and a Highly Commended for Best Relaxed Contemporary Restaurant in previous years.

Push to create local jobs

A MOORABOOL COUNCILLOR is pushing for planning restrictions to be lifted on the operating hours of a Ballan grain handling facility. Cr Paul Tatchell said Agripak near the Ballan-Daylesford Rd freeway overpass stores millions of dollars worth of grain each year before it is exported through the Port of Melbourne. It would have the biggest budget of any business in Central Moorabool, he said. I just want to revisit it because I think it could create jobs. Agripak hit the headlines in 2005 when neighbours opposed the $3 million facility, upset about potential truck noise and the visual impact of a 28m tower. A planning application was later granted with five pages of conditions including requirements for a 300m sealed driveway and a corridor of trees 20m wide with at least six rows of plantings. Cr Tatchell told the October 16 meeting he had toured the silos and was keen to see restrictions lifted on the times of the

LOCAL JOBS Kelvin Kirkpatrick and Peter Manson at Ballan business Agripak. Photo Helen Tatchell day Agripak was allowed to operate. I am hoping we can support jobs in the area and business in general so we can create employment for young people. Weve got to stop the trend of the part-time resident. Most peri-urban areas like ours are trying to reduce the number of residents who commute because we want a sustainable community - not a transient one. Cr Tatchell said he would like to see less than 50 per cent of Moorabool workers commuting. Macedon Ranges went from almost 60 per cent down to 48 per cent of the workforce after developing appropriate industries that fit in with rural living, he said. There are some examples of fantastic industries in our part of the world. Just look at Paarhammer doubled-glazed windows - they have done a magnificent job with a great product that fits in with local lifestyles. Its a world class product made in a little town like Ballan. Cr Tatchell said he would like to set up a business advisory committee in Moorabool, made up of industry leaders, chambers of commerce, businesspeople and entrepreneurs.

Is Woolpack back?
Only two days after meeting with the Rural Advisory Committee in Ballan, Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay MLC has taken his concerns to Parliament. When the RAC first met with Mr Ramsay the Moorabool News published an article, 15 October, about the committees informal discussion on a number of topics. Chairman Cr. Paul Tatchell said in that article Mr Ramsay identified a number of considerations that would need to be examined citing the traffic issues within Bacchus Marsh requiring a definitive answer on Woolpack Road. In a Hansard extract from 17 October Mr Ramsay raises the issue of Woolpack Road for the Minister for Roads, Terry Mulder. I raise a matter for the Minister because it is becoming more urgent now, given that the federal government has allocated specific money for the western interchange (Halletts Way) and we are yet to reach a consensus on an option for what is known as the Woolpack option for moving heavy traffic. It is becoming more critical for the town at Bacchus Marsh and will be more so in the future, given the population corridor that has been nominated for Bacchus Marsh, that a consensus be reached so that the preferred option on heavy traffic movement meets the concerns of all stakeholders in Bacchus Marsh. Mr Ramsay said in the extract that the time is nigh for a decision to be made. I ask that the Minister for Roads advise the council and the stakeholders in the precinct how we are to retain the announced funds from Regional Development Australia through the federal government and also be able to provide a solution to the heavy traffic problem on Woolpack Road. As Parliament is sitting this week, an answer from Minister Mulder may be forthcoming by the end of the week.

The arrival of the NBN rings in changes to the home phone

Many Bacchus Marsh residents now have access to Telstra services on the super-fast National Broadband Network (NBN). As well as changing the way you enjoy the internet, the NBN will mark a change in the technology that delivers voice calls around Australia. In areas where the NBN fibre network is available, home phones will be transitioned from the familiar copper network to digital technology running on the NBN. Over time this digital technology will bring benefits, like better-quality voice calls. If you have a home phone and youre in an area serviced by NBN fibre youll need to move your service onto the NBN to keep your home phone connected. The good news is that Telstra can transfer your home phone service to a similar plan on the new network and importantly, youll keep your current telephone number. Telstra offers a range of voiceonly services for those who want to take advantage of the digital technology and keep up to speed, but arent after a broadband service. perform several tasks at once like downloading movies on your T-Box while streaming internet radio on the T-Hub 2 and uploading photos to Facebook. Helping you every step of the way

As Australias largest full-service provider, Telstra is uniquely positioned with its popular bundles, as well as voice-only and broadband plans, improved customer service and more than 100 years experience in connecting Australians. We are working closely with customers to make the process of connecting to the NBN as simple and hassle-free as possible through our team of local technicians. Once NBN Co connects the fibre to a customers home, Telstra will complete the installation with a follow-up appointment where one of our specialists will connect the customer to Telstras services and ensure devices such as the T-Hub 2 are fully connected. Our team of technicians recognise that every home is different, and will take the time to explain how to get the most out of your devices and ensure you have the right set up for your household.

Kind journey for victims

By Jessica Howard Work Exp - (2nd year Swinburne Uni.) Local sisters Rachel Bronca and Rebecca Stanton are making a special trip to New South Wales this Saturday, but not for a holiday. The Bacchus Marsh pair will distribute donations they have collected for the recent bushfire victims. Over the past fortnight, the sisters have encouraged people on Facebook to donate non perishable food, clothing and toiletries in order to help out those affected by the fires, and there has been a wonderful response Rachel said. We have had six different drop off points within Moorabool and also an organisation called One Family in Melton helped to sort clothes. With a large number of family members living up in the Springwood and Medowie area, and an aunt having to evacuate her home, the girls felt very empathetic towards the victims of the bushfires. A lot of the family on our dads side live up there, so we want to go up and help those who have been affected, Rachel said. Rachel and Rebecca will depart at 4:30am on this Saturday with the donated items, including a generous donation of a pallet load of water by Cottonwood Springs at Mt Warrenheip, which the girls will distribute to the local fire stations upon arrival. They will then proceed to the surrounding evacuation centres in order to dispense all the donated products. This bountiful generosity is not a onetime occurrence for the sisters; in 2011 they set off with a truck full of furniture and household goods following the Carisbrook floods.

Double Century for artist

Launching the Double Century exhibition at the Gordon Edgerton Galleries recently were (L-R) Wendy Whitford, Christine Hickson, Mare Heffernan and Dr Loyd Fyffe. Photo Jane Gardner By Jane Gardner It has been a busy week in the local art world. The Double Century exhibition opened at the Gold Museum in Ballarat and a few days later, the same artists were represented at an opening at the Gordon Edgerton Galleries in Gordon. The exhibition is a major retrospective of the work of two renowned Ballarat artists and educators, Edward Heffernan and Geoffrey Mainwaring. Both men, born a week apart in October 1912, at one time, were employed to teach art at the School of Mines in Ballarat. Also included in the exhibition are works of three local artists who were influenced by them, Vida Pearson, Margaret Voterakis and Wendy Whitford. Sovereign Hill CEO, Jeremy Johnson, opened the Double Century exhibition at the Gold Museum, speaking to a crowd of 200 or more, about the creative talent and artistic influence of the two men. The exhibition, at both venues, includes a variety of paintings, drawings and linocuts and provides a wonderful insight into the lives and times of Heffernan and Mainwaring. The Gold Museum alone contains over 100 works, from still life to nudes, landscapes to WWII scenes. (Mainwaring was an official war artist, and some of the works in the exhibition are on loan from the Australian War Memorial.) Members of the Heffernan and Mainwaring families were in attendance at the opening of the Double Century exhibition, and Heffernans wife Mare is proprietor of the Gordon Edgerton Galleries in Gordon, where the exhibition is also on show. The exhibition runs until 23rd February 2014.

CFA crews return

By Jessica Howard Work Exp. (2nd YR Swinburne Uni.) As the fires begin to ease in the greater Sydney region thanks are extended to all the Victorian fire-fighters who left for New South Wales to provide assistance during the states bushfire emergency. Crews from the Bacchus Marsh area, Mount Wallace and Trentham were deployed along side more than 500 Victorian firefighters following a request for additional support in preparation for increased fire danger. Bacchus Marsh deputy group officer Tony Prowse said local crews assisted with the fires at the Blue Mountains as required since Wednesday. The District 15 strike team consisted of five fire trucks and two support vehicles including a Bacchus Marsh tanker one and the Bacchus Marsh Big Fill, he said. Units from Bacchus Marsh, Myrniong, Coimadai, Balliang, Parwan and Rowsley all put their hands together to assist and crew the vehicles, Mr Prowse said. The trucks and crews departed a week ago with their shifts ending last Friday in New South Wales, before flying back to Victoria the next day.

Developer must pay fees

MOORABOOL COUNCIL has insisted that a Ballan developer pay a five per cent levy on the value of his subdivided land to go towards parks in Central Moorabool. The October 16 meeting was told the owner wanted to pay 2.5 per cent for the 4000 sq m Flack St subdivision, based on a Council letter from 2003. Mayor Pat Toohey told the October 16 Council meeting the letter made no difference. Given the growth in the community and especially the need for a second recreation reserve in Ballan we could set a precedent if we allow someone to pay 2.5 per cent, based on a letter from 10 years ago, he said. Councillors were told the land was originally subdivided in 1987, before the 1988 Subdivision Act imposed Public Open Space contributions. A further subdivision into two lots was approved in 2012 - this time asking for the five per cent fee. A report to the meeting said it was possible the land could be cut up a third time in the future. It said the area north of the Werribee River in Ballan was seeing a gradual reduction in lot sizes from 4000 sq m to 2000 sq m (half an acre). The value of the land was unclear, but if the developer had been successful the 2.5 per cent levy could have saved tens of thousands of dollars. Cr Tonia Dudzik said the owners neighbours were required to pay a levy of only 2.5 per cent. Its unfair. Both neighbours should be treated the same, she said. But Cr Paul Tatchell said five per cent was cheap by todays standards and the levy would probably rise in the future. Public Open Space contributions are put into ward reserve funds, to pay for parks, ovals, tracks and other recreation facilities in the same part of the shire.

Whats on your mind?

The column where you steer and I drive!

with Paul Tatchell

Its all in the TEXT

If someone had told me 40 years ago that one day we will be communicating our deepest thoughts, even some of our shallowest ones, into cyber space at the end of a telephone, I would probably have said exactly what I would say today: why? When you consider where I grew up the telephones didnt even have numbers on them, just a little handle that spun around to contact the telephone exchange for re-direction, and the invention of the cartridge pen was considered a giant leap in technology, I reckon I have come a long way; even if my grown up kids think I havent! The art of texting is lost on me. I am not sure if its these old eyes, or these fingers that seemed to have grown too wide for the buttons that I cant see anymore! Im not saying I havent had a go at it, but by the time I find my specs, workout how to access the texting thing on my phone, hit every button twice, the second time fix the thing I hit once, then try and send the bloody thing, I could have refilled my fountain pen, changed the shirt I just covered in ink, wrote the letter, enveloped and posted it, and waited patiently for a response! Even more frustrating is when you get a text. Firstly I have to decipher the code, the supposedly more efficient way of spelling that has made the Oxford concise obsolete; after all correct spelling in the form of a text is out of context. I mean, lets face it, the text thing is hard enough without needing an interpreter trained in the art of language re-invention every time someone tries to communicate with you. If I have to reply in the same language, that only means both of us will have no idea what we are texting about! My latest phone has its own Olivetti {thats typewriter for those who still recognise who they shave every morning}. Imagine that, a bloody phone with a keyboard within the keyboard. It even takes photos; no wonder Kodak went out of business! You can even do the Google thing on this little screen. Technology is so good today you dont need to know anything, you just talk to these Google people, and the wonders of the world are at the end of those stubby little things that used to hold a fountain pen. I am trying to imagine what going to school would have been like if I had one of these Nokia Texting Google things sitting next to me, instead of the kid that was saving tubbing for a rainy day. I am happy to embrace the technology if it makes me look smarter than I really am, but talking in text is beyond the pale. My wife even texts me when we are in the same room. By the time she explains to me how to get the text, and then how to respond to the text, I reckon communication is not the only thing that is lost! If my wife ever says we dont talk anymore I am going to pull the batteries out of her phone! I am also starting to realise that all of those things I am supposed to know are being held hostage by a SIM card that refuses to communicate its ransom demands. I am continually being texted; its different to getting a text. Its when youre standing innocently in front of your wife trying to work out what you could possibly have done wrong, and it finishes with I sent you a text. I was only just getting used to I told you, and now its I texted you. If there were only three horses in the race Id be coming fourth! Kids can text quicker than I can think, and I strongly suspect, after reading some of these texts, theyre typing quicker than they can think! Its like the world has become some sort of interactive computer game. Everywhere you go people are texting, even when theyre sitting right next to each other! I keep trying to convince myself that its a fad, and that the lost art of direct communication will some-day return, but I suspect the i-phone Gods have other ideas. In the meantime, I best text my wife to email me my daughters new number so I can text her about the email sent from my sons phone regarding the text sent to my wife about using text instead of email to avoid not getting the message to my other son, who has a flat battery and cant communicate. If all else fails, I will go in the next room and tell her! Who said I cant communicate in the modern world! LOL, its G8 ATM BTW! Whats on your mind emails must be accompanied with full name, address and phone number (not for publication). Please send all correspondence to news@themooraboolnews.com.au

Environmental Opinion
relevant at this time in Australias political life as we begin a new path under a new government. Might I offer a suggestion that where the former government was into the Bargaining stage on the climate change scenario according to Elisabeth Kbler-Rosss stages of grief and how it would affect our way of life, the present federal government, and I must say most of the state governments, are into the Anger stage. As yet this federal government has not been able to leave the anger stage. Why else would you have a government so attacking of anything Green, be it a political party, or any environment group but because of this anger? Why else try to dismantle most of the climate change initiatives of the previous government if not out of this anger stage - anger at the possibility that our way of life is going to die? What do you think? As you read the following descriptions of the five stages of grief you might like to ponder my strange suggestion. Kbler-Ross originally developed this model based on her observations of people suffering from terminal illness. She later expanded her theory to apply to any form of catastrophic personal loss, such as the death of a loved one, the loss of a job or income, majorrejection, the end of a relationship or divorce, drug addiction, incarceration, the onset of adiseaseorchronic illness. In brief the five stages are as follows: 1. Denial - I (we) feel fine.; This cant be happening, not to me (us). Denial can be a conscious or unconscious refusal to accept facts, information, or the reality of the situation. Denial is a defence mechanism and some people can become locked in this stage - Andrew Bolt and some shock-jocks come to mind here. 2. Anger - Why me (us)? Its not fair!; How can this happen to me (us)?; Who is to blame? Once in the second stage, the individual recognizes that denial cannot continue. The current Prime Minister can no longer refer to climate change as crap. And who is to blame? Well it appears the Greens are to blame and heaven forbid a Green parliamentarian dare link

with Tom Kingston

The five stages of grief

At one time, in the not too recent past, the work of Elisabeth Kbler-Ross, M.D. (July 8, 1926 August 24, 2004) a Swiss American psychiatrist, caught the attention of many people. Elisabeth Kbler-Ross was a pioneer in near-death studies and the author of the ground-breaking book On Death and Dying (1969), where she first discussed her theory of the five stages of grief. I mention this work of Elisabeth Kbler-Ross at this time because I believe it has relevance to our situation, as we as a species face the uncertain and very frightening future as part of life on a rapidly deteriorating planet. Not necessarily the future of the human species but the future of our way of life. This is also spring bushfires in NSW with climate change. The anger can just about be felt. 3. Bargaining - Ill (well) do anything for a few more years.; I (we) will give my (our) life savings if... The third stage involves the hope that the individual (of the country) can somehow postpone or delay death. Psychologically, the individual (country) is saying, I understand I will die, but if I could just do something to buy more time... How can we preserve our way of life and face climate change? 4. Depression - Im so sad, why bother with anything?; Im (were) going to die soon so whats the point? During the fourth stage, the grieving person (country) begins to understand the certainty of death. Yes, we are going to lose our way of life. Feeling those emotions shows that the person (country) has begun to accept the situation. And finally, 5. Acceptance - Its going to be okay.; I cant fight it, I may as well prepare for it. In this last stage, individuals (countries) begin to come to terms with their mortality. Its OK to lose our way of life. It is not the end of the world. What is your opinion? Next Moorabool Group Envi(MEG)

Dear Editor, The traditional backyard has disappeared (The MN, 22/10/2013 Has the traditional Australian Backyard been blitzed?) because developers make more money if they squeeze large houses on small blocks with instant gratification fake grass and pebble gardens. The number of bedrooms dictates sale and rental price. This trend is driven by nothing but developer greed, presenting no incentive for Council to change planning guidelines because smaller blocks equal more rates. The arguments that people want housing options, are too busy to cut lawns, and that kids stay inside more these days are totally flawed. We only have to look toward Caroline Springs for good design. House size is dictated by block size, and there are integrated mixtures of large, medium and small block sizes which lead to an appropriately spaced mix of large, medium and small houses with breathing space in between. Can anyone explain to me why Council isnt using our Structure Plans to bring the traditional back yard back so kids can safely run off excess energy, pets have appropriate yards, gardens can help clean the air, and birds and little creatures can visit for food, shelter and our pleasure? Marg Scarff Maddingley the club. Two council staff members were to come to a discussion because, due to lack of help, the president wanted to resign which threatened the future of the Senior Citizens Club. On the 25th of October, at 12.30, at least 60 elderly persons were waiting for the staff from the council to turn up. After a hour wait, the president rang the council to find out where they were. Apparently after the last meeting, they had forgotten to write down the date so were not able to attend because they had no time. The meeting was therefore not able to go ahead so all the old people could pack up and go home. Is this the way the council treats the elderly? Thanks for a (not so) excellent job. Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au bloke called Ian Cooper from IGA Civil stepped forward, gave us the machine for nothing and then refused the fuel to put in it. He said it was his privilege to do something for the community he has recently moved into. The low came on recently when I went up to the oval to find that overnight some low mongrel had stolen two of the hot water services that run the showers in the change rooms, and that the place has been covered in graffiti. To whoever is responsible I hope your conscience gets the better of you when you realise this hits at the heart of what being in a community is all about. Your actions will cost time and money but most of all it costs commitment as it starts people wondering why be involved when this is what happens. The facilities at the sports oval are there for all; lets Dear Editor, I wanted to write to let you know of the highs and the lows you can experience as part of a small community. I am part of a small and dedicated team that are responsible for the Ballan Recreation Reserve. Many of our newer community members may think that the sports facilities are provided for and maintained by council, but this is not the case. This sports ground along with many others are maintained by members of the community with limited funding from Moorabool Council and fees from the sports user groups. The highs of being involved in this is when you need a road roller to roll the oval flat so that it is safe for senior and junior cricketers over summer, last year it cost us $1100 dollars to hire one, this year a champion not let the actions of the brainless few destroy them. Mick Masters Rec Reserve Committee Ballan Dear Editor, Australians have elected the second Prime Minister who made a prominent election promise that: There will be no carbon tax under my government. The electorate supported this policy twice. With two vetoes, the desire of the people is surely obvious. Amazing Value For Money In Gordon

Enzo Raimondo CEO, REIV

4 Dicker Street Gordon $390,000

September quarter medians

While the median price of a house in regional Victoria rose only slightly in the September quarter, major centres showed stronger growth. Buyers are still attracted to the key regional centres of Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Clearance rates averaged more than 80 per cent in all three centres this quarter. The median house price rose by 0.8 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms to $308,000 from a revised $305,500 in the June quarter. Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo have outperformed the broader regional market and remain at their peak prices after growth in this quarter. Geelongs house price increased the most out of the three main centres with a 3.8 per cent increase in the quarter to $405,000. Ballarat recorded a more moderate increase of 1.8 per cent to $290,000 while Bendigo recorded a 1.6 per cent increase $315,000. Interest rates remain low and buyers are taking advantage of this with the chances of a further rate cut this year becoming less and less likely. There have also been a number of positive indicators in the state which has increased demand, primarily in the metropolitan market. We are also starting to see this demand have some flow-on effects into the major regional centres, particularly Geelong with its proximity to the metropolitan market. Unlike the strong improvement in the metropolitan market, the housing market in regional Victoria has moved more slowly. The average days on market for a private sale in regional Victoria has increased by three days in September quarter to 111 days in comparison to the previous quarter. To find out more about the September quarter medians, visit www.reiv.com.au

Round 4 of the BBDB weekend pennant took place on Saturday with Avenues Premier Division hosting top of the ladder Ocean Grove. This week, as has been the case over the previous three weeks, saw Avenue take on one of the powerhouse sides in the competition. Avenue went into the match-up with confidence, given they have had two honourable losses in the past two weeks, however at the end of the game, there was a sense of deja vu with Ocean Grove winning by 19 shots. Samantha Shannahan continued her fine form, with her rink winning by 10 shots, thus gaining a valuable 2 points from the game. Glenn Sargents rink just failed to get over the line going down by 3 shots, whilst Martin Shea who arguably drew the best opposition rink went down by 7 shots after leading with 4 ends to go. Avenue lost Ocean Grove by 19 shots Division 3 travelled to Mt Xavier and was expected to come away with the points against the bottom side. However things didnt go exactly to plan. After atight struggle early Mt Xavier dominated the day winning all four rinks. Peter Glass rink battled manfully only to lose by 3 shots.

Bill Hawkens rinkalso kept their opponents honest all day, but surrendered 6 shots in the last 2 ends to go down by 11 shots. Unfortunately the other 2 rinks could not match their opponents on the day and were well beaten. Withup to 4senior players returning next week, the side can only be strengthened. Avenuelost Mt Xavier by 56 shots Division 5 played BMS at home and chalked up their second win of the season. Led (again) by Vic Foxfords rink which recorded a 6 shot win and Di Hardiments rink scoring a 2 shot win. The Division was able to cover thethird rinkwhich went down by 1 shot and a draw by the fourth rink. After a shaky start to the season, this Division has now won two games in a row and with a few players dropping down from Division 3 next week and they can now look to further improvement in the forthcoming weeks. Avenue def BMS by 7 shots Division 9 received their second walkover in three weeks to earn a valuable 16 points without the need to put down a bowl. These points consolidate the sides position atop of the Div 9 ladder.

Juniors The B2 team played away against Navigators and started with a close set. Joel and Lachlan did get the win in a 7-2 tiebreak. The first two singles sets delivered one win for both teams, while Juulke won the third set 6 0. Owen played his first singles match at the B2 level and won 6 4. Ballan 5/33 def Navigators 1/20. C2 Blue played their match in Meredith. Ballan 3/21 def Meredith 1/19. The C3 team travelled to Ross Creek and like the previous matches this one was close. Ben and Adam started the match with a loss in the first set 3 6. Some great team work between McKinnon and Ethan levelled the match, winning 6 4. Unfortunately in the third set Ross Creek proved a bit too strong. Adam and Ethan did everything they could to win their second set and went all the way to a tie-break, which they narrowly lost. Ross Creek 3/21 def Ballan 1/15. The C4 played at Napoleons and were able to register their first win of the season. Jessica and Kelsey did have a great start, winning their set 6 0. Tully and Luke played some great rallies and won their set 6 -2. Ballan 3/22 def Napoleons 1/8. The signs for the C5 werent good for their away match in Napoleons. Cold conditions, rain, late arrival and sickness. However, the team played with great spirit and scored a very good result. Lillabelle and Angus won the first set 6 3. Charlie and Daniel went even better and won the second set 6 1. Ballan 4/24 def Napoleons 0/8. Next week B2 v Mt Helen (at Ballan) C2 Blue v C2 Black (at Ballan) C3 v Buninyong White (at Ballan) C4 v Meredith (at Ballan) C5 v Warrenheip (at Ballan) Seniors The A3 team played at Haddon and did not win a set. The return of Paul Tatchell to the team couldnt lift the boys in their games but playing in the mixed with wife Helen they registered two games on the score card. Ryan Aquilina took to the court this week and could only manage three games in his three sets. Helen and Kristy Tatchell were the highlight of the day winning five games in their ladies loss. Helen recorded eight games overall and Kristy six. Samantha Lee picked up three games overall and Shane Woodroffe one. Despite the score, the games played were close and often went to deuce, believe it or not! Ballan 0/12 lost Haddon 9/72 Next week Ballan v Smythesdale (Ballan)

Sport Bacchus Marsh Lawn Bowls

Bacchus Marsh took on Woodend in both top Divisions this week, with Division 1 hosting the ladder leaders. The clash was much anticipated, and certainly lived up to the hype, with the match ebbing and flowing all day. Bacchus Marsh was 12 shots down at lunch and lifted after the break to get back to all square within 10 ends, but the Woodsmen took control once more taking the lead to 18 shots with 25 ends left. The Marsh dug deep, fighting for every shot. Alan Maher and Dylan Filuk extended their margins, 31-22 and 3124 respectively, while Amy
