Gay rights factor into

Virginia governor race

McAuliffe polling ahead of
Cuccinelli as Election Day nears
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
HERNDON, Va. Former Democratic
National Committee Chair Terry McAuliffe
continues to portray Virginia Attorney
General Ken Cuccinelli as anti-gay in
the nal days of the commonwealths
gubernatorial campaign.
McAuliffe pointed out his Republican
rival once described gay Virginians as
soulless human beings in response to
a question during an Oct. 24 debate at
Virginia Tech in Blacksburg that Roanoke
television station WDBJ sponsored.
Who talks like that, McAuliffe said.
Theres somebody in this audience who
might be gay or has a friend whos gay. You
cannot grow and diversify our economy
with this mean-spirited language.
McAuliffe, who has publicly backed
marriage rights for same-sex couples
alongside the two other Democratic
candidates for statewide ofce, further
sought to differentiate himself from
Cuccinelli during a campaign rally at
Herndon Middle School on Monday at
which former President Clinton spoke. U.S.
Sen. Mark Warner; Congressman Gerry
Connolly and state Del. Charniele Herring
(D-Alexandria), who chairs the Democratic
Party of Virginia, also addressed those

In days after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced on Monday a
oor vote would take place on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act before
Thanksgiving, some members of the Democratic caucus are still undecided.
Following Reids announcement, the three Democratic holdouts Sens. Bill
Nelson (D-Fla.), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) signaled theyd
support the legislation as Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) reportedly said hes inclined
to support the measure.
Meanwhile, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) expressed opposition to ENDA in its current
form and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) may be wavering following his support for the bill
in committee.
Reid said during his routine weekly news conference on Tuesday that he feels
pretty good about ENDA, but wasnt more specic about the timing of the vote.
I dont know if well do it next week but were going to do it this work period,
Reid said. The lead Democrat on that has been [Sen.] Jeff Merkley of Oregon and
he said earlier today he has 59 supporters. So, thats pretty good. Thats counting
a new senator on Thursday.
The bill, which has languished in Congress in various versions since the 1970s,

GOP former U.S. senator
backs gay marriage, end
to LGBT discrimination

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Former U.S. Sen. Alan K. Simpson
(R-Wyo.) said he is proud to have
helped arrange for former President
Gerald Ford, during his retirement
years, to become the rst U.S. president
to become a member of a gay rights
organization.
In an exclusive interview with
the Washington Blade last week,
Simpson talked about how he sees
no contradiction in his longstanding
role as a conservative Republican and
his support for equal rights for LGBT
people, including equal marriage rights
for gays and lesbians.
All I know is we have made great
strides for gays and lesbians and
transvestites, he said when asked if he
thought Congress would soon approve
the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act, or ENDA, a bill calling for banning
job discrimination against LGBT people.
Saying he isnt always certain about
the proper terminology to use in
discussing LGBT issues, Simpson said
he is certain about his longstanding
commitment to fairness and equality,
even if he is at odds with many of his
Republican colleagues.
Lets just keep making these strides
and it will happen, he said referring
to ENDA, which is expected to come
up for a vote in the Senate before
Thanksgiving.
It will happen because other people
know these people and they love them,
he said. And Im very pleased. Anyone
who is on the side of justice and freedom
and caring about fellow human beings is
pleased about whats going on.
Simpson said his own views on
gay rights were shaped by his and
his wife of 59 years, Ann Schroll
Simpsons, longstanding belief in
fairness and equality for everyone and
by gay people they came to know over
the years.
I had a gay cousin who was a war
hero in World War II a wonderful
man, he said.
Simpson said hes also proud to have
been named about 10 years ago by the
national gay magazine The Advocate
as one of the ten coolest straight guys
in America.
Simpson spoke to the Blade on
Oct. 23 just before delivering opening
remarks at a performance at D.C.s All
Souls Unitarian Church of a gay-themed
mock trial of deceased former U.S. Sens.
Joe McCarthy (R-Wisc.), Styles Bridges
(R-N.H.), and Herman Welker (R-Idaho).
The script for the mock trial, which
is performed as a play, was written by
Wyoming writer, minister and former
politician Rodger McDaniel, a friend
of Simpsons, who based the script on
his recently published book, Dying
for Joe McCarthys Sins: The Suicide of
Wyoming Senator Lester Hunt.
In his book, McDaniel reports, based
on extensive interviews and historical
documents, that Hunt, a Democrat,
committed suicide in 1954 after McCarthy
and the other two senators conspired to
blackmail him by threatening to publicize
the arrest of Hunts son in Washington
one year earlier for allegedly soliciting
an undercover vice police ofcer
for gay sex.
McDaniels book and the mock trial
describe in detail how the three senators,
all Republicans, wanted to force Hunt to
resign from the Senate, which would
have tipped the closely divided body
from Democratic to Republican control.
A GOP-controlled Senate at the time
would have strengthened McCarthys
campaign to purge large numbers of
gays and others he accused of being
communist sympathizers from their
government jobs.
The alleged scheme unfolded in the
midst of the nations red scare triggered
by McCarthys allegations that communists
and communist sympathizers were
working in high level U.S. government
jobs and in the U.S. military.
Simpson told the Blade he was appalled
over the facts that McDaniel brought to
light in his book, prompting him to agree
to write the forward for the book.
Simpsons discussion with Gerald
Ford over gay rights took place shortly
after Simpson accepted an invitation by
gay Republican activist Charles Francis
to become chairperson of the Advisory
Board of the Republican Unity Coalition,
a gay-straight alliance that Francis and
two other gay Republican advocates
founded in 2001.
I picked up the phone, Simpson said
in describing his conversation with Ford.
Charles asked me to call him. I said
OK. And I called and I said, Jerry this
is Al Simpson. And he said, Im 80, or
whatever it was. But he said, Ill do it.

D.C. AIDS Walk raises $600,000
The 27th annual AIDS Walk Washington on Saturday raised roughly $600,000 for the ght against the epidemic.
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton were among the estimated 5,000 people who
attended the event that began on Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington. NBC anchor Eun Yang emceed the AIDS
Walk for the second consecutive year, while Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams served as grand marshals.
This morning we walk to free ourselves completely and absolutely from HIV/AIDS, Norton said.
Both Norton and Gray discussed the progress D.C. has made in ghting the epidemic.
The latest HIV/AIDS epidemiology report that D.C. ofcials released last month noted newly diagnosed HIV cases in the
nations capital decreased 46 percent from 2007.
Roughly 15,000 Washingtonians or 2.4 percent of D.C. residents were living with the virus at the end of 2011.
Men who have sex with men and heterosexual sexual contact were the two leading modes of transmission among newly
diagnosed HIV cases.

Trans activist Hughes to run
for Stein Club president

Veteran D.C. transgender activist Jeri Hughes this week announced she is a
candidate for president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club in the groups
annual ofcers election scheduled for Nov. 18.
Hughes is the second candidate so far to enter the race for the presidents
position. Stein Club Vice President for Legislative and Political Affairs Angela
Peoples announced two weeks ago that she was running for president after
incumbent President Martin Garcia said he would step down as president
and run for the vice presidential seat held by Peoples.
If successful, Hughes would be the rst transgender person to serve as
the clubs president. Transgender and Democratic Party activist Julius Agars
served as the clubs vice president two years ago.
Meanwhile, Stein Club Secretary Jimmie Luthuli announced this week that
she is running for the position of vice president for administration. That post
is being vacated by incumbent Vincent Paolo Villano, who isnt running for re-
election. As of this week, no one has announced candidacy for the Stein Club
treasurers position, which is being vacated by gay Democratic activist Barrie
Daneker, who also decided not to seek re-election.
Everyone who knows me knows Im a ghter who works hard to help the
community, Hughes said. Whatever the issues are I will ght for them.
She added, This has very little to do with Martin and Angela. I want to give
the existing members a choice.
Garcia, Peoples and Vallano ran as a slate in the clubs election last year
in opposition to the slate organized by then-Stein Club President Lateefah
Williams. Their victory, which caught some of the clubs longtime members
by surprise, resulted in a change in leadership and came about after an effort
by the then challengers to sign up more than 50 new members supportive of
them just days prior to the election.
At the time, Hughes criticized the new group for stacking the election,
even though she acknowledged their actions were allowed under the
clubs bylaws. The club has since changed its bylaws to require prospective
members to join the club at least 30 days prior to a club election in order to
be eligible to vote.

Rehoboth singer who lost home

The LGBT community and its straight friends in Rehoboth Beach have
organized a fundraising dinner and dance to provide emergency assistance
to local singer and songwriter Viki Dee, who lost her home and three pets to
a re on Oct. 20.
Dee has told friends she came home following a performance to nd her
house in a development off of Route 1 a few miles west of the Rehoboth
engulfed in ames. She said the estimated $70,000 in damage to the
manufactured house and its furnishings paled in comparison to the loss of
her pet dog, cat and cockatoo, all of whom perished in the re.
Its hard, she told the Cape Gazette newspaper. Im left with nothing but
the clothes that were on my back Im really starting over. Im blessed to be
alive. But the animals, thats what really breaks my heart.
Joe Maggio, co-owner of the Rehoboth gay bar and restaurant Aqua and
partner in Maggio Shields Realtors, said his and other local businesses have
joined friends and supporters to put together a fundraiser for Dee scheduled
for Nov. 17 at the Rehoboth Convention Center. Marry Ann Slinkman, a
Maggio Shields real estate agent who is coordinating the fundraiser, said the
event will include a spaghetti dinner and dance. A $25 donation for admission
is being sought for the event.
Slinkman said tickets can be purchased by mail by sending a check to the
Viki Dee Fund to 33 Deereld Lane, Rehoboth Beach, Del., 19971. Tickets can
also be purchased at the Maggio Shields Real Estate ofce at 18756 Coastal
Highway, Rehoboth Beach, as well as at the Convention Center at the time
of the event.

Anti-gay lawmaker guilty in
two drunk driving charges
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
An anti-gay state lawmaker on Oct.
25 was sentenced to 60 days in jail after
pleading guilty to two drunken boating
and driving charges.
Retired Harford County Circuit Court
Judge Emory Plitt, Jr., sentenced state
Del. Don Dwyer (R-Anne Arundel County)
in connection with an August 2012 crash
on the Magothy River in Pasadena that
left him, two other adults and four children
injured. Dwyer last week also pleaded
guilty to a charge of driving under the
inuence of alcohol after Anne Arundel
County police pulled over his car on
Route 100 in Pasadena in August.
Dwyer, 55, in May pleaded guilty to
operating his boat while under the
inuence of alcohol.
The Anne Arundel County Republican
was to have received probation
under the plea deal he reached with
prosecutors, but Anne Arundel District
Court Judge Robert Wilcox rejected it.
He sentenced him to 30 days in jail and
a years probation and ordered him to
pay a $1,000 ne.
Dwyer appealed the sentence, but he
once again pleaded guilty to the charge
in August.
Dwyer, 55, has been among
Marylands most outspoken opponents
of marriage rights for same-sex couples.
He said before lawmakers in 2012
approved the states same-sex marriage
bill that nuptials for gays and lesbians
in Massachusetts indoctrinated the
commonwealths public school students
into homosexuality.
Dwyer in 2006 tried to remove
Baltimore Circuit Court Judge M. Brooke
Murdoch from the bench after she
found Marylands same-sex marriage
ban unconstitutional. The Anne Arundel
County Republican in 2010 sought
to impeach Attorney General Doug
Gansler, who formally announced his
gubernatorial campaign last month,
after he announced the state would
recognize same-sex marriages legally
performed in other jurisdictions.
Dwyer told the Maryland Gazette in
January that then-Del. Tiffany Alston
(D-Prince Georges County) and two
Republican delegates who voted for the
same-sex marriage bill contributed to
his alcohol abuse.
The Maryland Gazette reported Dwyer
must begin serving his sentence by
Nov. 9, but he is allowed to serve them
consecutively and on weekends.
Plitt also sentenced the Anne Arundel
County Republican to three years
probation on the drunken boating
charge. The Maryland Gazette said the
judge also ordered Dwyer to complete
an alcohol counseling program, attend
Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and
agree to random testing to prove he is
not drinking.

organizer of political campaigns, both
for liberal-left causes and for progressive
public ofcials, such as the late-U.S.
Rep. Bella Abzug (D-N.Y).
He was an excellent campaign
organizer, Sherrill said. He reinvented
himself as an excellent journalist and
most important he had a passionate
commitment to justice.
Irelands longtime friend Valerie
Goodman told Gay City News he had been
suffering in recent years from diabetes and
the after-effects of two strokes.
Despite chronic, at times debilitating
pain and frequent hospitalizations,
Ireland remained a dogged reporter
and book critic in recent years, writing
articles for nearly every issue of Gay City
News, said Paul Schindler, the Gay City
News editor, in an article published after
Irelands death.
Sherrill and others who knew Ireland
said he became involved in the early
1960s with the new left movement
initially as a member and later as one of
the leaders of Students for a Democratic
Society (SDS) beginning at the age of 17.
Among other things, Ireland joined
the staff of the 1968 campaign of
then-Democratic U.S. Sen. Eugene
McCarthy, who challenged President
Lyndon Johnson for the Democratic
Party nomination on an anti-Vietnam
War platform. Although McCarthy
lost his bid for the nomination to then
Vice President Hubert Humphrey after
Johnson withdrew as a candidate,
the McCarthy campaign and Irelands
efforts have been credited with helping
open the way for the election of anti-war
candidates to Congress.
Two such candidates, Allard
Lowenstein of Long Island and Bella
Abzug of New York City, won their races
for the U.S. House of Representatives
with Ireland serving as a lead organizer of
their campaigns, Sherrill told the Blade.
He was an extraordinary organizer,
Sherrill said. He could bring people
together who would ordinarily not talk
to each other.
Sherrill said Ireland succeeded where
some left-leaning political advocates
failed because he was capable of
supreme pragmatism to achieve political
objectives, even when, at times, he
enlisted the help of machine politicians.
New York-based gay freelance travel
writer and photographer Michael Luongo
praised Irelands skills as a reporter as
well as a commentator, saying Ireland
developed a vast network of sources and
contacts in the U.S. and abroad.
I fully admired his work, always
amazed at his network of contacts and
how he was able to go deep on issues
around the world relating to the LGBT
struggle, Luongo said.
Former Redskins player
apologizes when pressed
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A former Washington Redskins player on
Monday used an anti-gay slur to describe a
one-time rival during a radio interview.
I think Troy Aikman is a queer, former
defensive end Dexter Manley said during
an interview with WTOP about the
Redskins loss against the Denver Broncos
on Sunday as he described former
Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman.
WTOP hosts Mike Moss and Bruce
Alan immediately challenged Manley.
Moss asked the former defensive end
whether he would apologize for using
the slur to describe Aikman.
Ill just say, I take that back, Manley
said. Hes a Cowboy fan.
Well we dont want certainly anyone
to think that anybody endorses anything
like that, Dexter, because that is really not
an area that we want to go in, Moss said.
Manley then apologized, but WTOP
Vice President of News Programming
Jim Farley criticized Manleys comments
almost immediately after he made them
on his Twitter page.
This morning in a live interview
former Redskins player Dexter Manley
made an offensive and derogatory
comment, Farley told the Washington
Blade in a statement. He was
immediately challenged by WTOP news
anchors Mike Moss and Bruce Alan.
We were shocked and stunned and
we apologize to our listeners that this
happened on WTOP.
Cyd Zeigler, Jr., co-founder of Outsports.
com, an LGBT sports website, also
criticized Manleys comments.
Even if Aikman played for the other
team, you have to treat people with
respect, he said. Raising more questions
about Aikmans sexual orientation doesnt
do anybody any good. Im sure Manley
will apologize when a handler gets hold
of him, but his refusal to apologize tells us
whats in his heart.
Farley told the Blade that WTOP will
no longer invite Manley to appear in the
radio stations programming.

Va. judge hears marriage case motions
HARRISONBURG, Va. A federal
judge on Oct. 29 heard arguments
on whether a lawsuit that challenges
Virginias same-sex marriage ban should
become a class action.
The Associated Press reported that U.S.
District Judge Michael Urbanski heard
motions to dismiss Gov. Bob McDonnell
and Staunton Circuit Court Clerk Thomas
E. Roberts as defendants in the case. The
news agency said Urbanski did not rule
on the motions.
The American Civil Liberties Union and
Lambda Legal in August led the lawsuit
on behalf of Christy Berghoff and Victoria
Kidd of Winchester and Joanne Harris
and Jessica Duff in Staunton.
Timothy Bostic and Tony London of
Norfolk in July led a separate federal
lawsuit against Virginias gay nuptials ban
after they unsuccessfully tried to apply for
a marriage license.
The American Foundation for Equal
Rights in September announced Ted Olson and David Boies, who successfully
argued against Californias Proposition 8 before the U.S. Supreme Court, had
joined the Bostic case. The duo is also representing Carol Schall and Mary
Townley of Richmond who joined the lawsuit.
Gay couple sues taxi company
CHICAGO Lambda Legal on Oct. 28 led a lawsuit on behalf of a gay
couple who said a cab driver forced them to leave his car after they kissed.
The LGBT advocacy group said in a press release that Steven White and
Matthew McCrea on May 30 entered a Sun Taxi cab at OHare International
Airport. The men claim the driver pulled over onto the shoulder of a Chicago
expressway after they exchanged a brief kiss and demanded they get out
of the taxi in spite of heavy trafc and rain.
Lambda Legal said the driver pulled over on a Chicago expressway after
the couple exchanged a brief kiss and demanded they get out, even
though it was raining.
White and McCrea said they refused to leave the cab. The lawsuit says the
driver then drove to the nearest exit, stopped at a parking lot and once again
demanded they get out of the cab.
White and McCrea said the 311 operator with whom they were initially
speaking transferred them to 911 and a responding police ofcer waited
with them until another taxi picked them up.
When the driver demanded that we get out of the cab, I was afraid,
McCrea said.
Christopher Clark, senior staff attorney for Lambda Legal, said the alleged
incident is a violation of the Illinois Human Rights Act that bans discrimination
based on sexual orientation in public accommodation.
OConnor ofciates same-sex wedding
WASHINGTON Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor
on Oct. 29 ofciated a gay couples wedding inside the Supreme Court.
The Associated Press reported OConnor married D.C. residents Jeffrey Trammell
and Stuart Serkin during a private ceremony in the courts lawyers lounge.
Trammell and Serkins nuptials are the second same-sex wedding that has
taken place inside the U.S. Supreme Court since the justices in June found
a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and struck down
Californias Proposition 8. The AP reported Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg over
the weekend ofciated a gay New York couples wedding.
Ginsburg in September ofciated the wedding of Kennedy Center
President Michael M. Kaiser and economist John Roberts.
Houstons Parker,
Washington states
Murray leading in polls
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Miami Beach City Commissioner
Michael Gongora is considered to have
a shot at becoming that citys rst openly
gay mayor on Tuesday despite the fact
that former President Bill Clinton has
endorsed one of his three opponents.
Gongora, Mayor Annise Parker of
Houston, whos running for re-election;
and Washington State Sen. Ed Murray,
whos leading in the polls in his race for
mayor of Seattle, are among a record
54 openly LGBT candidates running
nationwide in an off-year election.
Each of the candidates has been
endorsed by the Gay and Lesbian
Victory Fund, a national LGBT advocacy
group that raises money and provides
logistical campaign assistance to openly
LGBT candidates for public ofce.
Like Gongora, Murray would be the
rst openly gay mayor of Seattle if he
beats incumbent Mayor Mike McGinn.
Murray nished ahead of McGinn in a
multi-candidate open primary in August,
prompting political observers to predict
Murray would emerge as the winner in
the general election on Tuesday.
Most political observers in Houston
consider Parker the frontrunner in a
nine-candidate race. But they say its
possible that her lead rival, millionaire
attorney and philanthropist Ben Hall,
could win enough votes to force Parker
into a runoff election in December.
Most of the remaining 54 LGBT
candidates backed by the Victory Fund
are running in county and municipal
races, including seven openly gay
or lesbian candidates running for re-
election or election to the New York
City Council. Each of seven candidates,
all Democrats, is expected to win their
races in heavily Democratic districts.
In the Miami Beach race, Gongora,
an attorney and environmentalist,
received the endorsement of the Miami
Herald and several of his fellow city
commissioners. Hes running in a hotly
contested race against a millionaire
real estate developer, Philip Levine,
whom Clinton endorses; and former
comedian and entertainer Steve Berke.
A fourth opponent, Raphael Herman,
is considered by observers as a fringe
candidate who isnt expected to be a
signicant player in the race.
According to the Miami Herald,
Levine has contributed more than
$1.5 million into his campaign and
is believed to be behind a series of
negative ads attacking Gongora. Some
of the ads point to Gongoras 2002
drunken driving arrest that was lowered
to a reckless driving charge.
I made a mistake, and its not a
mistake that will impact in any way,
shape or form my ability to lead the city
as mayor, the Herald quoted Gongora
as saying.
Gongora has red back at Levine,
pointing out in his own campaign ads
that Levine gave money to the 2010
campaign of Tea Party Republican
Marco Rubio when Rubio ran in the
GOP primary against then-Republican
Gov. Charlie Christ for an open U.S.
Senate seat, which Rubio won.
Democrats outnumber Republicans
in Miami Beach by a wide margin and
Levines support for Rubio in 2010 could
hurt him, even though hes a Democrat.
Victory Fund spokesperson Jeff
Spitko said another candidate along
with Parker, Murray and Gongora
running in what the group considers
this years 10 groundbreaking races
for LGBT candidates is lesbian Celia
Israel of Austin, Texas. Israel is running
in a special election for an open seat in
the Texas House of Representatives in a
four-candidate race.
She would become the second openly
LGBT member of the Texas Legislature
if she wins her race on Tuesday.
Israel, a progressive Democrat,
worked as an aide to former Texas Gov.
Ann Richards before starting a public
policy consulting business in Austin,
where she and her partner of 18 years
live. Shes running against two other
liberal Democrats, Rico Reyes and Jade
Chang Sheppard, and Republican Mike
VanDeWalle in a majority Democratic
district. She received the endorsement
of the Austin Chronicle.
Spitko said the Victory Fund has
dispatched staff and board members
along with volunteers to work on the
get-out-the-vote effort for Israel, Parker
and Murray. Victory Fund Executive
Director Chuck Wolfe will be in Seattle
helping with the Murray campaign;
the groups political director, Lucinda
Guinn, will be in Houston helping on
Parkers campaign; and Deputy Political
Director Mike McCall will be in Austin
helping Israel, Spitko said.

Activists concerns linger as
Sochi games approach
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Russian President Vladimir Putin on
Monday said gays and lesbians will
not suffer discrimination during the
upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi.
On my own and on your behalf, I
have assured Mr. (International Olympic
Committee) President (Thomas Bach)
that we will do our best, and our athletes
and fans will do their best too, so
that both participants and guests feel
themselves comfortable at [the] Sochi
Olympics regardless of their ethnicity,
race or sexual orientation, Putin said
during a Sochi press conference that
Bach attended, as the Associated Press
reported. I would like to underline that.
Putins comments come amid
lingering outrage over Russias
LGBT rights record that threatens to
overshadow the Sochi games that will
take place in February.
Putin in June signed a bill into law
that bans gay propaganda to minors. A
second statute that bans foreign same-sex
couples and any couple from a country in
which gays and lesbians can legally marry
from adopting Russian children.
LGBT advocacy groups are among
those that face nes under a 2012
law that requires non-governmental
organizations that receive funding
from outside Russia to register as a
foreign agent.
It is hard to imagine how people
can be welcomed equally regardless
of sexual orientation when such a law
... is in place, Anastasia Smirnova, a
Russian LGBT rights advocate, said
during an Oct. 29 conference call with
reporters that All Out hosted as she
discussed Putins comments and the
gay propaganda law he signed.
U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
(R-Fla.) and more than three dozen
other members of Congress earlier in
October asked U.S. Olympic Committee
CEO Scott Blackmun to outline how
he plans to ensure the safety of gay
American athletes who plan to compete
in the Sochi games.
Author Dan Savage and playwright
Harvey Fierstein are among those who
have called for a boycott of the Sochi
games over Russias LGBT rights record.
Two dozen members of Queer Nation,
an LGBT advocacy group, on Tuesday
protested outside a Times Square press
conference at which the U.S. Olympic
Committee ofcially launched a 100-day
countdown to the Sochi games. Activists
with the same organization in September
interrupted the Metropolitan Operas
opening night gala to protest Russias
gay rights record.
The USOC and the international
community should not legitimize
Russias violations of fundamental
human rights by holding the games in
that country, Queer Nation member
Duncan Osborne said.
Blackmun on Oct. 11 said Russias gay
propaganda law is inconsistent with the
fundamental principles of the Olympics
and Paraolympic movements. The
USOC Board of Directors the day
before voted to add sexual orientation
to its non-discrimination policy.
The IOC has repeatedly maintained
it has received assurances from the
Kremlin that the gay propaganda ban
will not affect athletes and others who
plan to travel to Sochi, even though
Russian ofcials have previously said
the statute will apply to those who
go to the games. Bach in September
stressed during a speech he delivered
in Greece before the lighting of the
Olympic ame that Olympic values
include respect without any form of
discrimination.
Bach is scheduled to meet with
Russian LGBT rights activists at the IOCs
headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland,
this week. Smirnova said he declined to
meet with them during his most recent
trip to the Olympic host city.
It is a shame that despite the
advanced notice, the president
couldnt nd the time to meet with
representatives of the coalition of LGBT
organizations, she said.
Rights vary drastically
across region
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Nearly 300 LGBT rights advocates
from across Europe gathered in Croatia
from Oct. 24-26 for ILGA-Europes
annual conference.
Croatian President Ivo Jospovic
on Thursday welcomed those who
attended the gathering in Zagreb, the
countrys capital, in a video message.
I take this opportunity to
congratulate you on your courage and
perseverance in the struggle for your
right to be different, your right to be
public and visible, Jospovic said.
Uzra Zeya, acting assistant secretary
of the Bureau of Democracy, Human
Rights and Labor at the U.S. State
Department joined European Union
Special Representative for Human
Rights Stavros Lambrinidis, Portuguese
LGBT rights advocate Miguel Vale de
Almeida and other ofcials who spoke
during the conference. Denis Dison
of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund,
Russian LGBT rights advocates Igor
Kochetkov and Polina Andrianova,
Neil Grungras of the Organization for
Refugee Asylum and Migration and
Hilde Vossen of the European Bisexual
Network are among the activists who
attended the gathering.
The exchange of experiences and
policy development is highly benecial
to us in Europe, as the European societies
as well as the national laws differ widely
across the continent, Sren Laursen
of LGBT Denmark, a Danish advocacy
group, told the Washington Blade.
The activists ghting the course need
to understand the differences and learn
the different political realities to be able
to formulate policies. An ILGA-Europe
conference is a big sharing experience.
The ILGA-Europe conference took
place roughly ve months after same-
sex couples began to marry in France.
Gays and lesbians can also legally tie
the knot in Portugal, Spain, Iceland, the
Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden
and Denmark.
Same-sex couples will be able to legally
marry in England and Wales in the spring,
while Scottish lawmakers have begun to
debate their own gay marriage measure.
Irish voters next year will consider a
proposed constitutional amendment that
would extend marriage rights to same-
sex couples in the country.
Maltese parliamentarians in October
began to debate a measure that would
allow gays and lesbians to enter into
civil unions. A Croatian parliamentary
commission last week approved a
December referendum on whether to
amend the countrys constitution to ban
same-sex marriage.
The upper house of the Dutch
Parliament later this fall is expected to
vote on a measure that would allow trans
people to petition a judge to change
their gender on their birth certicates,
passports and other ofcial documents
without undergoing sterilization and
sex-reassignment surgery.
Anti-LGBT discrimination and violence
in Europe remains a serious concern in
spite of these legislative advances.
Nearly half of the respondents who
took part in a survey the European Union
Agency for Human Rights conducted
in E.U. countries in 2012 said they
experienced anti-gay discrimination or
harassment. A quarter of respondents
said they experienced violence or were
threatened during the past year this
gure increases to 35 percent among
trans people who took part in the survey.
The annual ILGA-Europe conference
took place less than a week after police
in Montenegro clashed with protesters
who sought to disrupt a Pride march in
Podgorica, the countrys capital.
Hundreds of Serbian LGBT rights
advocates late last month criticized
their governments decision to ban a
Pride march in Belgrade because of
what ofcials described as the threat of
violence from anti-gay extremists.
The European Union and
the governments of the Netherlands and
other member countries have also
repeatedly criticized Russia over its
LGBT rights record that includes a law
that bans gay propaganda to minors.
Laws that validate discrimination, as
we have seen in Russia, can lead to an
increase in violence and harassment,
Zeya said during her speech at the
ILGA-Europe conference. This is
particularly true when authorities
dont act to protect all of their citizens
and when they fail to investigate and
prosecute crimes committed by or
against particular groups.
Jospovic did not specically reference
Russia in his remarks, but he did stress
human rights imply the right of every
human being to achieve his or her
potential in that which he or she is.
This includes the right to freely
express ones sexual orientation and
gender identity without the threat of
anyone being humiliated, insulted and
subjugated to violence as a result or
to be excluded from social and public
life, the Croatian president said.

We must be a state where gay
Virginians are treated equally,
McAuliffe said.
A Washington Post/Abt SRBI
poll unveiled on Monday shows
McAuliffe ahead of Cuccinelli by a 51-
39 percent margin among likely Virginia
voters. Libertarian gubernatorial
candidate Robert Sarvis, who also backs
nuptials for gays and lesbians, received
eight percent.
The survey also found state Sen. Ralph
Northam (D-Norfolk) ahead of Republican
E.W. Jackson by a 52-39 percent margin
in the lieutenant gubernatorial race.
State Sen. Mark Herring (D-Loudoun) was
ahead of his GOP rival in the attorney
general campaign, state Sen. Mark
Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg), by a 49-46
percent margin.
Fifty-four percent of likely Virginia
voters who responded to the
Washington Post/Abt SRBI poll said they
feel Cuccinellis views on most issues
are too conservative. Forty-six percent
of respondents who took part in a
Quinnipiac University survey conducted
between Oct. 2-8 had the same opinion
of the attorney general.
LGBT rights advocates and
Democrats have repeatedly criticized
Cuccinelli and Virginias statewide
Republican ticket over their opposition
to marriage rights for same-sex couples
and other gay-specic measures in the
commonwealth.
The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this
month denied Cuccinellis request to
appeal a lower court ruling that found
Virginias sodomy law unconstitutional.
The Republican attorney general in
2010 recommended Virginia colleges
and universities remove LGBT-specic
provisions from their non-discrimination
policies.
Cuccinelli defended the
commonwealths constitutional
amendment that bans nuptials for gays
and lesbians during a Sept. 25 debate
against McAuliffe in McLean. The
attorney general also spoke at an anti-
gay marriage rally at a Manassas church
last October to which the Washington
Blade was denied access.
Gay activists blasted Jackson over his
comparison of gay men to pedophiles and
describing them as very sick people.
Obenshain sponsored a bill that
Gov. Bob McDonnell signed into law in
March that bans public universities from
denying recognition and funding to
student organizations that discriminate
in their membership based on sexual
orientation and other categories that
federal law does not protect. Obenshain
also opposed a measure a Virginia
House of Delegates subcommittee in
February tabled earlier this year that
would have banned discrimination
against LGBT state employees.
For the past four years, Ken
Cuccinelli has bent and twisted the law
in order to impose policies on Virginians
that are far outside the mainstream,
Mark Herring said during the McAuliffe
rally at Herndon High School. My
opponent Mark Obenshain would
be a continuation of that approach.
Cuccinelli did not mention his
opposition to same-sex marriage during a
campaign rally at the Waterford in Fairfax
which U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) spoke.
Campaign nance reports indicate the
Family Research Council and other anti-
LGBT organizations and gures have
contributed hundreds of thousands of
dollars to Cuccinellis gubernatorial bid.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee
and Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, stars
of the TLC reality show 19 Kids and
Counting whose eldest son now works
as a lobbyist for the Family Research
Council in D.C., joined Cuccinelli on the
campaign trail last month. The National
Organization for Marriage on Tuesday
described the attorney general as a
true champion for marriage and life in
an e-mail to supporters.
NOM is honored to support Virginias
attorney general Ken Cuccinelli
in his campaign for governor of the
commonwealth, NOM President Brian
Brown wrote. Cuccinelli is facing off
against Clinton crony Terry McAuliffe,
an ardent pro-abortion, pro-marriage
redenitionist.
Annandale resident Senora Avery
told the Blade after the McAuliffe
rally at Herndon Middle School that
transportation, womens rights and
Medicare are among her top priorities
going into Election Day. She criticized
Cuccinellis position on same-sex
marriage and abortion.
His particular ideology about that is
incorrect, Avery said. People ought to
have the choice to do and love who they
want to love. And I agree that Terrys
position on that is 100 percent correct.
Cuccinelli supporters with whom the
Blade spoke at the Waterford sought to
downplay his opposition to same-sex
marriage and other LGBT-specic issues.
A man holding a National Rie
Association sign who declined to tell the
Blade his name said he feels Cuccinellis
positions on the aforementioned topics
have received too much attention
during the campaign.
Instead of on social issues as much,
we need to be on scal issues, he said.
We need to be about whats best for
Virginia.
Jeffrey Young of Bristow, who was
also holding an NRA sign as he and
his wife stood with their two young
children, told the Blade government
spending and abortion are among their
top issues.
Young questioned those who have
categorized Cuccinelli as anti-gay
because of his opposition to same-sex
marriage and previous statements that
LGBT rights advocates have categorized
as homophobic.
I read his legislation and his
policies, Young told the Blade, noting
the attorney generals Roman Catholic
faith and church teachings around
homosexuality and marriage. I read
the opponents policies and theres
an obvious disparity between them,
but none of that really comes up in his
policies or any of the legislation Ive
seen from him.

would prohibit businesses from
discriminating against or ring workers
for being LGBT.
Merkley, ENDAs chief sponsor, was
similarly optimistic when speaking with
the Washington Blade on Capitol Hill
about whether he thinks the bill will pass
the Senate.
I think it will, Merkley said. Theres
just a tremendous sense that this is an
issue of fairness, an issue of equality
under our Constitution, an issue of
opportunity. If you dont have a chance
to have fairness in getting a job, you
really dont have a fair chance to live the
American dream.
Merkley wouldnt predict the number
of votes that ENDA will receive on the
Senate oor and deferred details about
the timing of the vote to Democratic
leadership, but said momentum
continues to build.
Following Nelsons signal
earlier Tuesday that he would become
the 54th sponsor of ENDA, Pryor, in a
development rst reported by Arkansas
Times, announced hed vote for the
legislation on the oor. Michael Teague,
a Pryor spokesperson, conrmed to the
Blade that Pryor will vote yes on ENDA.
Tico Almeida, president of Freedom
to Work, said Pryors support for ENDA
is evidence that momentum for the
legislation is building fast.
We applaud him for standing up
for basic fairness and predict that his
decision will be supported by Arkansas
business leaders from small to big,
Almeida said. It helps that Wal-
Mart, the states largest employer, has
protected gay and lesbian workers
from discrimination for nearly 10 years,
and adopted workplace protections for
transgender employees two years ago.
The next day, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.
Va.) signaled hed also for vote ENDA.
Asked whether he could conrm a tweet
via the New York Times that the senator
would vote for the bill, Jonathan Kott, a
Manchin spokesperson, replied, I can.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), a
senator known for his outreach to the
LGBT community, was optimistic when
speaking to the Blade about ENDAs
chances on the Senate oor.
I think it has a very good chance of
passing; Im very positive about it, Schumer
said. There are at least four Republicans
who have either voted for it, or committed
to voting for it, and ve or six other who
seem positive. Im very optimistic.
One Republican who may be in
that column is Portman, who earlier
this year after learning his son is gay.
The Cincinnati Inquirer reported that
Portman said Tuesday hes inclined to
support ENDA.
Caitlin Dunn, a Portman
spokesperson, told the Blade afterward
the Ohio Republican supports the basic
premise of the legislation, but has
concerns about religious liberties.
Sen. Portman agrees with the
underlying principle of ENDA and
supports ending unjust discrimination
based on ones sexual orientation,
Portman said. He doesnt think one of
his constituents should be able to be
red just because he or she is gay. The
bill as it stands, however, is not perfect,
and he continues to discuss his concerns
with the bills sponsors and is exploring
ways to strengthen the bill, including its
religious liberties provisions.
But other Republicans considered
possible yes votes on ENDA dont
share the same view.
Flake, who voted for a gay-only
version of ENDA without transgender
protections as U.S. House member in
2007, told the Blade in response to how
hell vote on the bill this time around, If
its the House version, Ill vote for it, like
I did then.
When the Blade pointed out that the
2013 version of ENDA in the Senate is
different from the 2007 version in the
House, Flake replied, If they dont
change it, Ill vote no.
Asked if it was the trans protections
in the current version of ENDA to which
he had objections, Flake replied, Yeah.
I have issues with that.
Another Republican previously cited as
a potential yes vote on ENDA, Sen. Pat
Toomey (R-Pa.) told the Blade he hadnt
seen ENDA, nor would he say if he was
leaning to vote one way or the other.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) had similarly
said he hasnt thoroughly examined
ENDA when speaking with the Blade,
but indicated some initial concerns
about the legislation.
I need to look at the bill, Rubio said.
I just saw yesterday news reports that
it might come up next week, so Ill be
studying it. I can just tell you my initial
read on it. I have concerns about it that
Ill address at a later time.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), identied
by Freedom to Work as an ENDA
supporter, was similarly non-committal
about the legislation.
I havent had a chance to examine
it carefully, McCain told the Blade. I
dont know when its coming up to tell
you the truth.
The Washington Post reported last
week that Cindy McCain, the senators
wife, signed a postcard to her husband
given to her by a Human Rights
Campaign volunteer encouraging him
to support ENDA.
McCain acknowledged he has
received the postcard as he maintained
he hasnt yet taken a position on ENDA.
My wife is as most women are a
very independent thinker and is entitled
to her views, and I respect those views
not only of my wife, but of my daughter
and my sons, McCain said.
Additionally, the two Republicans
who joined Democrats on the Senate
Health, Education, Labor & Pensions
Committee in voting left the door
open for them to vote no on the
Senate oor when speaking with the
Washington Blade.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), one of these
Republicans, gave himself considerable
latitude in reversing the yes vote that
he delivered in committee on ENDA.
Im looking at it, Hatch said. I want
to make sure I understand it fully before
I make a decision.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the
other Republican, also opened the
door for her to vote no when asked
if shed vote on the oor for the bill she
supported in committee.
Obviously, were going to see whats
happening with amendments, but, yes, I
was supportive of ENDA as it came out
in committee, and Im looking forward to
seeing it on the oor, Murkowski said.
Assuming these two Republicans
continue their support for ENDA, the 54
sponsors of ENDA vote for it as well as
Manchin and Pryor, the legislation now
has the 59 votes that Reid cited during
the news conference. Thats still one
vote short of overcoming a libuster.
Meanwhile, concerns among some
LGBT advocates persist over the
religious exemption over fears the
language is too broad and provides
insufcient protection for LGBT people
working at religious organizations.
The grassroots LGBT group
GetEQUAL is petitioning Sens.
Elizabeth Warren (D-N.Y.), Al Franken
(D-Minn.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-Mass.),
and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) to speak
out against ENDAs broad religious
exemptions on the oor of the Senate,
touting more than 5,600 petition
signatures.
Heather Cronk, managing director
of GetEQUAL, said her organization
doesnt support ENDA with the current
religious exemption in place.
We dont support the current
version of ENDA specically because
the broad religious exemptions
contained in the bill will set a really
harmful precedent that discrimination
against LGBT folks is acceptable if the
person or institution discriminating
simply claims religion, Cronk said.
Currently, ENDA has a religious
exemption that provides leeway for
religious organizations, like churches
or religious schools, to discriminate
against LGBT employees. That same
leeway isnt found under Title VII of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which
prohibits religious organizations from
discriminating on the basis of race,
gender or national origin.
The lack of support for ENDA from
GetEQUAL as well as concern
expressed by groups like the American
Civil Liberties Union recalls the
discontinued support for ENDA in 2007
when the transgender protections were
dropped before a House vote took
place. Despite this concern, groups
such as Freedom to Work and the
Human Rights Campaign continue to
support ENDA with its current religious
exemption.
Merkley reiterated hes happy with the
current language, but noted there will
be a debate process and opportunity
for amendments on the Senate oor.
Im very satised with the religious
exemption Merkley said. Im sure therell
be a variety of amendments put forward,
but I think it strikes the right balance.

Equality Maryland
celebrates 25 years
Looking back on the journey to achieve
full equality in Maryland and its aspirations
to continue the ght for social justice,
Equality Maryland celebrated 25 years
with a gala brunch at the venerable Lord
Baltimore Hotel on Oct. 27 with nearly 500
in attendance. State Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County), whos gay, was
the guest of honor.
The event, which was emceed by
television journalists Derek Valcourt and
Adam May, received congratulatory
proclamations from Gov. Martin OMalley
and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-
Blake. U.S. Senator Ben Cardin made
brief remarks on Marylands successes in
attaining equality. A message from U.S. Sen.
Barbara Mikulski congratulating Equality
Maryland was read to the audience.
To underscore the importance of wooing
LGBT voters, gubernatorial candidates
Heather Mizeur and Attorney General
Doug Gansler as well as his running mate
Del. Jolene Ivey (D- Prince Georges County)
were on hand. Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown,
another candidate for governor, appeared
later on a video honoring Madaleno.
We have seen a sea change in
elimination of discrimination over the last 25
years, Cardin said but noted there is more
to accomplish. We will not be satised
until we pass the Employment Non-
discrimination Act. We have work to do.
Evans thanked the many folks who
worked and volunteered for Equality
Maryland over the years and the elected
ofcials who helped reach its goals.
The 25-year journey was climaxed with
the achievement of marriage equality,
she said.
Evans made a special point to express
gratitude to the Human Rights Campaign
for its efforts during the Question 6 battle.
She thanked the organization for increasing
support during that time.
Without HRC, we would not have won,
she said.
She said that Equality Maryland is
determined to have a transgender non-
discrimination law passed, integrate
African-Americans into the movement,
seek equality in immigration and help
lesbian and bisexual women achieve pay
parity with men.
Elected ofcials including Senate
President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Lt.
Gov. Anthony Brown, members of the
LGBT caucus as well as current and
former Equality Maryland leaders and
volunteers all took light-hearted jabs at
Madaleno in a video.
The work is not done, Madaleno
told the audience. We have a lot to
achieve. He cited a gender identity
non-discrimination law as the rst priority.
Personally, it is appalling to me that we
have to ght about the same ignorant
comments about transgender individuals
as we had to face as gays.
His other priorities consist of ghting HIV/
AIDS and homelessness of LGBT youth,
which he considers intolerable. Echoing
a theme that state Del. Maggie McIntosh
articulated in the video, Madaleno said, We
have to stay focused and stick together.
GLCCB to honor Pelosi
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and
Transgender Community Center of
Baltimore and Central Maryland (GLCCB)
will honor House Democratic Leader Nancy
Pelosi during its inaugural Hometown Hero
Awards & Champagne Brunch on Nov. 17
in Baltimore.
Pelosi, the rst female Speaker of the
House and a daughter of Baltimore, will be
recognized with the organizations lifetime
achievement award for her longtime
dedication to LGBT rights and her work to
ght HIV/AIDS in Congress.
It is a great privilege for me to come
home to Baltimore and celebrate the
progress weve made in the ght for
equality, Pelosi said.
Also to be honored are Carlton R. Smith,
president of Baltimore Black Pride and
HIV/AIDS activist, and Catherine Hyde,
a longtime transgender coordinator for
Howard County PFLAG.
The event will be held in the Calvert
Ballroom of the Lord Baltimore Hotel. For
more information and to purchase tickets,

Same health disparities affect New Zealand gays: study
WELLINGTON, New Zealand The same kinds of health issues that have been
widely reported to disproportionately affect LGBT residents in the U.S. have similar
effects on LGBT New Zealanders, Radio New Zealand reports.
In research commissioned by the countrys Auckland District Health Board, high
levels of suicide and depression were reported and are caused by minority stress,
the article said. Report author Michael Stevens says the rates of suicide among
young gay men there is ve times higher than that of the general population.
Though the legal setting in New Zealand has improved for the gay community, he
says, social stigma and shame persist, the Radio New Zealand article noted.
These things have an impact on peoples health. In the same way that ethnicity
and income levels can have an effect on peoples heath, so does being part of the
rainbow community, Stevens was quoted as having said.
Stevens told Radio New Zealand the governments new suicide prevention
strategy doesnt mention the gay community, the article noted.
New South Wales bill would ban ex-gay therapy
SYDNEY In other down under gay news, the Legislative Assembly of the
Australian state of New South Wales passed a motion last week that if passed would
outlaw reparative therapy for gays there, Gay Star News, a British News agency, reports.
Alex Greenwich, an openly gay member of Parliament (MP) for Sydney, introduced
the motion which passed the New South Wales Lower House, one of the states two
Parliamentary chambers.
Embedded in its theory is the notion that homosexuality is somehow a disorder
that can be xed and an immorality that must be healed. Many who have experienced
reparative therapy develop psychological conditions including obsessive addictive
behaviors, depression and suicidal ideation, he was quoted as saying.
Greenwich will now refer the transcript of the debate to the Parliaments Health
Care Complaint Committee inquiry into the promotion of false or misleading health-
related information or practices in the hope that it will recommend formal action
against so-called ex-gay therapists, the Gay Star article said.
Newer strain of HIV spreading in Russia
MOSCOW Researchers at a scientic research center in Siberia said two weeks
ago that it discovered a new strain of HIV in Russia that is spreading at a rapid rate,
the Moscow Times reports.
The subtype, known as 02_AG/A, was rst detected in the Siberian city
of Novosibirsk in 2006 and now accounts for more than 50 percent of new HIV
infections in the region, Novosibirsks Koltsovo science city said in a statement.
The number of HIV-positive people living in the Novosibirsk region has leaped
from about 2,000 in 2007 up to 15,000 in 2012, the statement said, citing Russias
Federal AIDS Center.
The new strain might be the most virulent form of HIV in Russia, Natalya
Gashnikova, head of the retroviruses department at the Vektor state biotechnology
research center at Koltsovo, whose specialists discovered it, told the Moscow Times.
She said the virus could spread much faster than Russias current leading HIV
strain, subtype A(I).
The new strain is not limited to the vast area of Siberia. It has been detected
in the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, as well as the former Soviet republics
of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the institute said.
Interestingly, the countrys MSM community (men who have sex with men) accounts
for a relatively small number of the overall HIV cases. It has been speculated that the
countrys unwillingness to address LGBT issues in general means it hasnt bothered to
secure accurate data on its gay community, Cares2.com, an online news portal, reports.

Pa. hospital system considering
same-sex spousal benets
BETHLEHEM, Pa. St. Lukes University Health Network, the second largest
employer in Pennsylvanias Lehigh Valley, said last week it would consider
extending spousal benets to employees in legal same-sex marriages, the
Morning Call, a regional newspaper, reports.
The decision to reconsider was started after a petition from the Pennsylvania
Diversity Network, which sent about 1,200 signatures to the network asking for
the change, the article said. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christies announcement
last week that he would not ght a state ruling there allowing gay marriage,
was part of the impetus, ofcials from St. Luke told the Morning Call.
Liz Bradbury, executive director for Pennsylvania Diversity Network,
handed Kenneth Szydlow, St. Lukes vice president of marketing, the petition
after holding a news conference on the morning of Oct. 24 outside St. Lukes
Fountain Hill, Pa., campus, the paper noted.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly 30 percent of
workers in private industry and in government have access to health care
benets for same-sex unmarried partners.

Getting enough quality rest
can have a profound impact
on your overall tness
So many of us are so busy with work,
with home, and of course, so busy with
that endless social calendar, that we
forfeit the most important thing for our
health sleep.
Though we all know that we should be
getting more shut eye, new studies are
showing that getting less than seven-
and-a-half hours of sleep a night can be
affecting our waistlines.
Sleep affects much of the hormone
production in our bodies, but
specically two hormones, ghrelin
and leptin which are linked to weight
gain. Think of ghrelin and leptin as our
food trafc light hormones. Ghrelin is
the green light or go hormone that
tells us its time to eat, drink and be
merry.
I believe many of you are familiar with
him. Leptin, on the other hand, is our
red light, or stop hormone, that lets
us know that we are actually full and
dont need to nish the entire bag of
potato chips.
If only that Ms. Leptin would come
around more often. So whats this
have to do with your sleep time?
Recent studies out of the University of
California-Berkeley are showing that
sleep deprivation actually increases the
ghrelin and decreases the leptin in your
body, sending you into an over eating
frenzy throughout the day until you get
back on a normal sleep schedule.
As if this wasnt bad enough, studies
out of the University of Colorado also
showed that lack of sleep affects our
brain activity, specically on what foods
we crave, and our ability to evaluate the
consequences of eating them.
Simply put, sleep-deprived people
choose fatty, high-calorie, junk foods
over healthy foods. So that party at the
club on a work night might sound great,
but it comes at a price that your skinny
jeans cant handle.
So whats a girl to do? Here are a few
practical tips.
1. Cut off the caffeine A cup of Joe
may get you going in the morning, but
that afternoon cup could be keeping
you up at night. After lunch time, switch
to decaf or my favorite, green tea, which
packs in a bunch of antioxidants without
such a caffeine boost.
2. Eat small, nutritious, meals
What you eat affects your sleep. Bigger
meals are harder to process affecting
the quality of your sleep. Also simple
carbohydrate and sugary meals spike
your blood sugar at night making it
harder to get to bed. I know we all
are queens, but follow this mantra: eat
breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen
and dinner like a peasant.
3. You betta work out Maintaining
daily workouts helps to regulate
hormone production and give you
quality sleep. Shoot for at least 30
minutes of intense exercise per day.
The best time to train varies person
to person, but be careful of working out
right before bed because it may actually
keep you awake.
Getting seven to eight hours of
quality sleep is very important to
maintaining a healthy weight. Try to hit
the sheets earlier to help avoid some of
those junk food cravings throughout the
day. Overall, pay more attention to your
sleep and more people will start paying
attention to you.

Survivor generation coping
with isolation, health concerns
Its often said that LGBT people are
an invisible minority. While its true
that some LGBT people intentionally
out themselves, the vast majority
of us are indistinguishable from our
family members, neighbors or friends.
Unless we verbally disclose our sexual
orientation or gender identity, others
would never know this facet of our
identity.
Within this invisible culture is yet
another, more invisible group. These
are LGBT seniors those over the
age of 60 years, who are either settled
into long careers, relationships and
retirement settings or living alone
and in social isolation and no longer
seen by younger LGBT folks.
Many of us came of age long before
the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969.
Many of us lived the majority of our
lives in the closet, spent years in
psychoanalysis trying to be normal,
or found a special partner and an
intimate social group but rarely
ventured beyond that safe zone.
We started the LGBT organizations
that younger people now take for
granted. We survived our brothers
who died of AIDS, sisters who died
of breast, cervical or ovarian cancers,
or those who died from alcoholism
and drug overdoses trying to numb
the pain of their loneliness. We are
survivors and the efforts we made to
build the movement of equality and
fair treatment for all LGBT people is
just now coming to fruition.
Now we face far more personal
challenges. Like our heterosexual
counterparts entering the Golden
Years, we face the issues of
retirement, growing health concerns,
and the considerations of what to
do when we can no longer care for
ourselves. We also have to deal with
increasing isolation, as we lose family,
friends and partners and our ability
to be social becomes more and more
limited.
But, as LGBT people, we have the
added burdens of entering our elder
years still facing discrimination, lack
of understanding of our needs, and
the reality that many of us wont have
families of our own to help care for us.
Many, if not most, seniors, regardless
of sexual orientation or gender
identity, will at some point need to
rely on publicly and privately nanced
long-term care services: home health
care services and senior centers in
order to stay in their homes or in the
homes of partners, friends or relatives;
assisted living or skilled nursing
facilities if continuing to live at home
is no longer feasible. LGBT seniors
face a long-term care system that is
unaware of their particular needs, if
not actually hostile.
Clearly, LGBT seniors face unique
challenges that they may not be able
to face alone. And Whitman-Walker
Health is here to help with not only
medical care, but mental health
services and legal help.
We currently offer two therapy
groups for LGBT seniors age 60 and
older (one group for lesbians, bisexual
women and transwomen, the other for
gay and bisexual men and transmen)
for issues related to aging. These
groups are professionally facilitated
and can be covered by Medicaid,
Medicare or private insurance. Call
202-939-7631 if interested. We also
offer a Gay Men Over 50 peer
support group. Call 202-797-3580 to
register.
Recently, our Legal Services
Program has expanded to help
LGBT seniors obtain adequate long-
term care and health care services;
address discrimination; obtain all
of the Social Security, Medicare,
Medicaid and other public benefits
to which they are legally entitled;
and protect their visitation and
decision-making rights in hospitals,
rehabilitation facilities, nursing
homes, assisted living facilities and
other long-term care settings.
Lets help each other continue
to survive and thrive as we get old
together.

Help drive a stake into the
heart of the Tea Party
Terry McAuliffe is the clear choice
for governor of Virginia. He is a mod-
erate who understands business and
has contacts across the nation that will
help Virginia move forward. McAuliffe
has the best positions on a number of
issues that directly impact the daily life
of Virginians including spending more
on community colleges and he strongly
supports more funding for transporta-
tion to ensure Virginia has the infrastruc-
ture needed for the future. He supports
full equality for the LGBT community
and a womans right to control her own
health care decisions.
Looking at the race from a different
perspective, some consider the best
thing to come from a McAuliffe victory
would be a stake-in-the-heart of the
Virginia Tea Party. Defeating the Tea
Partys standard bearer Ken Cuccinelli
and electing Democrat Ralph Northam
over E.W. Jackson for lieutenant gov-
ernor and Democrat Mark Herring over
Mark Obenshain for attorney general,
Virginians could actually advance the
cause of national sanity. The three Re-
publican candidates are the most right-
wing ever foisted on Virginia voters.
Polls clearly show Cuccinelli and his
running mates, who have spent years
ghting against the rights of minorities,
women and the LGBT community, are
nding that most Virginians consider
them out of the mainstream.
As the election moves into its last
days, the Tea Party is preparing to lose
and lose big to Democrats. Some Re-
publican moderates who have been
jumping ship still blame the anticipated
loss on a poorly run campaign rather
than admitting its the policies and ideas
promulgated by Cuccinelli and his sup-
porters that are to blame.
On the national level, Cuccinellis and
the Tea Partys loss will be a resounding
defeat for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and
Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) both part of the
cabal that forced the government to
shut down and were willing to let the
country go to the brink, or even over the
edge, to default. When the gubernato-
rial election began, Cuccinelli believed
they would be a plus for his campaign
and worked hard to have Cruz cam-
paign in Virginia. By the time he arrived,
Cuccinelli had to back away and tell re-
porters he would tell Cruz and Cantor
how bad the government shutdown was
for Virginians who were hurt more by it
than those in any other state.
For many years, Virginia has been
a purple state. But never in recent his-
tory have Virginians elected a governor
from the same party as the president.
They seemed to pride themselves
on rejecting the party in power in the
White House. That will change this year.
President Obama won the state twice
and Northern Virginia is growing at a
rapid pace and those voters are mostly
Democrats. They are changing Virginia
politics and with the help of opponents
like Cuccinelli and his right-wing, out-of-
the-mainstream acolytes, they will turn
the state blue. A Democratic governor
will help in the mid-term congressional
elections as well as future state legisla-
tive ghts.
Virginia is home to hundreds of thou-
sands of government employees, both
civilian and military, and government
contractors. While many of these indi-
viduals are moderates and have voted
either independent or Republican in the
past, the anti-government rhetoric that
is aimed at them by the Tea Party will
begin to have an impact on their vot-
ing patterns. You can only be attacked
verbally for so long before you respond
and the way to do that is at the polls.
These men and women who work for
the government either directly or indi-
rectly through contractors are serving
their nation. Those in the military are
being asked to risk their lives for the
nation. The shutdown impacted all of
them directly. Veterans didnt get ben-
ets on time, some mortgages went un-
paid, and their childrens education was
put at risk.
Voters have begun to realize that Tea
Party leaders like Ted Cruz, Eric Cantor
and the likes of Sarah Palin are talking
out of both sides of their mouths. They
vote to close the government and then
complain when veterans cant visit the
World War II Memorial. They threaten
default and then wonder why the mili-
tary gets hurt, 401k investments tank
and interest rates rise.
It is time for moderate policies and
sane politicians to again assert them-
selves. It is time to vote out all the fa-
natics and by electing Terry McAuliffe
and rejecting Cuccinelli, Virginia will
take the rst step toward doing this
next Tuesday.

National normalization of
marijuana likely to outpace
marriage equality
Referenced as the new gay marriage
issue, momentum for expanding the na-
tional embrace of marijuana is as ubiquitous
as that of same-sex marriage. This evolu-
tion even if initially limited to decrimi-
nalization and not full legalization in many
states is likely to see greater success on
a quicker schedule.
Due to a looming wall of state-level
legal obstacles confronting same-sex mar-
riage proponents, pot normalization may
soon outpace the advance of marriage
equality. Although same-sex marriage ef-
forts have scored additional state victories
in the wake of Supreme Court rulings last
summer, further expansion is approaching
a political plateau and perhaps decade-or-
more slog toward nationwide acceptance.
Pot smokers probably wont have to wait
that long.
Both reforms enjoy majority nationwide
support for the rst time. In fact, nearly 60
percent now endorse fully legalizing pot
a larger percentage than favoring gay
nuptials. While both undertakings currently
enjoy parity in public approval and in the
number of states adopting policies that
reect accelerating shifts in opinion, con-
sumer pot faces an easier path.
In D.C., October suddenly became
marijuana month as public attention fo-
cused on two local developments.
First was the revelation that the citys
long-delayed medical marijuana program
had become an unexpected bust due to
startlingly low participation, endangering
the viability of the few product cultivation
and patient dispensary businesses already
approved and in operation. With less than
100 current or in-the-pipeline patient ap-
plications, and no more than 2.5 percent
of practicing local physicians expressing
interest in recommending treatment for the
handful of allowed ailments, it is not clear
that any of the businesses are nancially vi-
able. At present, the program is not a sus-
tainable enterprise.
Legislation introduced by D.C. Coun-
cil member and mayoral candidate
Tommy Wells to decriminalize posses-
sion of small quantities of pot simulta-
neously hit the headlines and garnered
national attention. With the support
of at least 10 of 13 legislators and the
announcement by Mayor Vincent Gray
that he approves of the effort, passage
by year-end seems assured.
The bill eliminates criminal penalties
for possession of up to an ounce of mari-
juana. A token civil fee of $25 would re-
place the current maximum punishment
of six months in jail and $1,000 ne. It
would also shield an infraction from public
record, eliminating the effect on employ-
ment or other liabilities.
D.C. will join 15 states that have de-
criminalized pot possession. Two states,
Colorado and Washington, will soon nal-
ize regulations and initiate rules for legal-
ized marijuana use approved by voters last
November. Efforts to either decriminalize or
legalize marijuana in additional states are
gaining steam and legalization-by-ballot in
California may be decided by voters in 2016.
With a recent poll indicating 62 percent
of District voters favor full legalization, an ef-
fort to qualify a ballot initiative also legal-
izing home cultivation of marijuana may
soon be launched. Backers are waiting to
see what effect passage of the legal-lite
law may have on support for their effort.
Once marijuana is decriminalized in
D.C., whether the citys medical marijuana
program is further imperiled is unclear. It
certainly wont help.
Many posit that patient need is largely
fullled on the underground marketplace.
Requiring registration with the government
and acknowledgement that the activity is
illegal under federal law are also known to
be barriers for both patients and doctors. It
is unlikely that proposals to expand the ail-
ments eligible for treatment will generate
sufcient engagement necessary to sustain
a robust number of commercial providers.
The market for medical marijuana may
only support one, perhaps two, dispensa-
ries. Only time will tell. It is unreasonable,
however, to relegate patients to required
illicit acquisition.
District ofcials must continue to main-
tain a medicinal marijuana program, no
matter how small, offering economic under-
writing if required until no longer needed or
federal marijuana prohibition nally ends.
Medical pot programs may soon be-
come a quaint relic of a transitional era.
But until then, marijuana as medicine
must be preserved.

In honor of National Coming Out
Day on Oct. 11, we asked some youth at
SMYAL for their thoughts on the com-
ing out process and the signicance of
holding an ofcial day to celebrate it.
The youth below shared some personal
memories of their own coming out sto-
ries, as well as advice for others of any
age involved in the life-long process of
coming out to people in their lives:
National Coming Out Day is an
amazing day, especially for LGBTQ
youth who want to come out to their
parents. Its a good reminder to the
youth that there are people who iden-
tify as LGBTQ all over the country com-
ing out, just like them. It provides com-
fort and condence.
Morgan, age 17,
Washington, D.C.
The rst person I came out to was
my best friend in middle school. It was
totally random, but the pressure had
been building and I loved her and felt
that she needed to know. I remember
it so clearly. Shed been cooking eggs
and I could hear the spatula stop shift-
ing over the phone. She said, So?
as if she didnt care and I was elated.
She still loved me. But then she started
asking questions and I realized she was
digging to see if I liked her. I did. Af-
ter that conversation, the phone calls
stopped, as did Facebook messages,
texts, etc. I still love her. I just wish it
was the same for her.
Cydney O. Brown, age 19,
Howard University
My coming out story didnt go as
well as I thought it would when I told
my parents. My mom thought me being
gay was the worst thing that could ever
happen and that if I was gay I couldnt
show it. So I say to all the people that
havent come out yet just dont be afraid
to be who you are so when you express
it, make a statement.
Corinthea Thompson, age 20
The rst time I told someone I was
gay I was in the ninth grade. At this
time I was doing a four-day show of
Rent the play. It was during our break,
where I was hiding under the table with
my teacher eating pizza that was only
enough for the two of us and I felt like
it was a good moment to tell her I was
gay, and I did. She gave me the biggest
hug that I have ever had in my life, and
by this time Ive had lots of hugs.

Breast cancer affects lesbian
and bi women more often
Breast cancer is generally not at the fore-
front when LGBT issues are discussed, even
though it impacts a signicant, yet often in-
visible, segment of the community.
Lesbian and bisexual women are at a
greater risk of developing breast cancer
than heterosexual women. Yet despite this,
breast cancer is almost never mentioned
when activists discuss issues that adversely
affect the LGBT community.
Much of this is because, despite the
progress that major LGBT activist groups
have made to be inclusive, the concerns of
gay men still dominate the conversation.
This is not necessarily done intentionally, as
many LGBT organizations are overwhelm-
ingly male and, consequently, those groups
may not realize the omission.
As breast cancer awareness month is
winding down, I realized that once again,
the only LGBT groups that are focusing on
breast cancer are those whose main objec-
tives are centered on lesbian health issues,
such as the Mautner Project, now part of
Whitman-Walker Health. The American
Cancer Society realizes the detrimental im-
pact that breast cancer has on lesbian and
bisexual women, and as a result, dedicates
a page on its website to addressing cancer
facts that particularly concern our commu-
nity.
There are both genetic and environmen-
tal factors that contribute to higher breast
cancer rates among lesbian and bisexual
women. According to the American Can-
cer Society, women are at a higher risk for
breast cancer if they have not had children
and have not breast-fed, have not used oral
contraceptives and are older when they rst
give birth all factors more likely to affect
lesbians and bisexual women.
Additionally, the American Cancer Asso-
ciation also mentions environmental factors
that impact our community at higher rates,
such as obesity, smoking, alcohol abuse and
less access to health insurance. Additionally,
fear of discrimination by health care provid-
ers causes lesbian and bisexual women to
avoid going to the doctor and obtaining the
routine screenings necessary to diagnose
the disease early.
Its common for members of the LGBT
community to avoid places where we have
faced discrimination. However that avoid-
ance becomes dangerous when you are a
woman and it causes you to avoid getting
necessary reproductive health screenings.
You often hear of places that the commu-
nity as a whole avoids, such as homophobic
churches, but you seldom hear stories of the
women who have experienced hateful con-
duct by their gynecologist, so they stopped
going in for exams. Consequently, there are
major campaigns dedicated to informing
the community of welcoming churches, but
not the same effort to inform lesbian and bi-
sexual women of welcoming spaces to get
women wellness exams.
Its difcult to know the exact impact that
breast cancer has on lesbian and bisexual
women because the research is not there.
The large national cancer registries and
surveys do not collect data about sexual ori-
entation, leaving lesbians embedded and
invisible among this vast wealth of informa-
tion, according to Liz Margolies, founder of
the National LGBT Cancer Network. Thus,
one of the rst things we need to do is force
the major cancer registries to start collecting
data on sexual orientation, get some of the
major cancer organizations to do extensive
research on the impact that breast cancer
has on lesbian and bisexual women, ad-
dress the precise causes of any disparities
and come up with suggested solutions to
address them.
Its time for the community to realize that
issues that adversely impact lesbian and
bisexual women are LGBT issues. Breast
cancer and its effect on lesbian and bisexual
women should be given a larger focus in the
community, just as issues that dispropor-
tionately affect the gay male segment of our
community, such as HIV/AIDS, are given. If
we want society as a whole to understand
our issues, we need to ensure that we are
setting an example by understanding and
advocating for issues that impact every seg-
ment of the LGBT community.

Local group honors gay poet
with lecture/discussion
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Local historian Martin Murray is founder of the
Washington Friends of Walt Whitman, a group that
conducts tours showing spots in D.C. that are signicant
to the late, great poet who was spent a large portion of
his adult life here from 1862-1873.
On Tuesday, Murray will lecture at the Naval Lodge Hall
in a discussion of the gay poets many roles here. Here are a
few highlights from a lengthy conversation with Murray this
week about why the Leave of Grass author still matters.
His comments have been heavily edited for length.
WASHINGTON BLADE: How did you come to be so
interested in Whitman?
MURRAY: I was introduced to him in 1976 when I was
a student at Rutgers. It was the year of the Bicentennial
and there was a series on famous Americans. One was
on Walt Whitman in which he was portrayed by Rip
Torn. I was in college and coming to terms with my own
sexuality. The portrayal was very sensitively drawn, but
they made it clear he was gay which I thought was
pretty forward for 1976. I hadnt studied him much in
school, but after that, I was very interested.
BLADE: Youve done some substantial research
on Whitman. What are some of the things youve
discovered?
MURRAY: I had been interested in his role as a
journalist during the war and I found about a dozen
additional pieces of Whitmans journalism that hadnt
been noted before. Also in some of the things he
jotted down during his time visiting wounded soldiers,
he would often jot down their names or initials. I thought
it would be interesting to nd out more about them, so
by doing some research at the National Archives where
military service records are held and pension records
as well, I was able to nd a lot. This was about 15 years
ago. I also wrote a biographical essay on (Whitman
condante and probably lover) Peter Doyle that was
published in the Walt Whitman Quarterly Review.
BLADE: Whitman lived here many years. What was
his view of his life in Washington?
MURRAY: He was basically here from the last week of
December of 1862 until July of 1873. As the war was ending,
he got more secure government work. He had a lot
of connections here and worked until he had a stroke in
January of 1873 in his ofce at the Treasury Building where
he worked in the attorney generals ofce. He was basically
paralyzed I believe on the left side. He tried as best he could
to recover but eventually realized he couldnt stay, so he went
to Camden, N.J., where he lived with his brother. I think he
would have stayed if his health had allowed.
BLADE: Do we know if there were any networks of
gay men in Washington at the time or if they had any way
of nding each other outside of random encounters?
MURRAY: Its really hard to say. There probably were
networks like that but trying to nd rm evidence of it
is really difcult. We know Whitman was writing poems
about romance among gay soldiers, that there were
references in the press suggesting his homosexuality
and people he was intimate with in D.C., but its hard to
say if there was any kind of gay society in that day.
BLADE: What signicance does it hold for gays
today to have historical gures such as Whitman be
recognized as gay forefathers?
MURRAY: Even with the great progress thats been
made, theres always a struggle, always something
to grapple with when we start to realize were gay.
People need to be able to look back and realize were
not freaks. People of my kind have always existed and
theres a continuity there that goes all the way back
through recorded time.

past or present?
The Eagle until I quit drinking in 1993.
Then it was the 12-step recovery house on

Describe your dream wedding.
I had my dream wedding on Jan.
30th this year. I married my partner of 15
years, just a little over a month after Gov.
OMalley ratied the results of Question
6. My husband and I got married by one
of our closest friends who went online
to be ordained. Then about 100 people
who I know when I worked for the Obama

political event. Friends brought covered
dishes. It was fabulous.

What non-LGBT issue are you most
passionate about?
The environment and economic
inequality.

What historical outcome would you
change?
The eight years of George W. Bush.

Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
Cher

I believe that we can connect with our
loved ones on the other side. I also believe
in reincarnation.

Whats your advice for LGBT movement
leaders?
What is already being done. Focus
energies on ENDA and overturning all of

A very wealthy nancial donor/sponsor
of Bmore QFest.

What LGBT stereotype annoys you

Why Baltimore?
Because its a fabulous city!
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
A long-time lover of LGBT lmmaking, Baltimore resident Chris Lines
noticed few gay movies were getting screened here.
A lot of the lms that play the festival circuit and get shown in Philadelphia,
Washington, and of course, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, they just
rarely seem to come here, the 49-year-old Fayetteville, Ark., native says.
Some of it might be because they gure showing them in Washington or
Philadelphia is close enough, but for whatever reason, its just not been a
market distributors seemed to think was necessary.
With the new Bmore QFest aka the Baltimore QUEER Film & Media
Festival Lines hopes to change that. A re-launch of the Baltimore QUEER
Film & Video Festival he ran for a few years in the late 90s (and no connection
to the Charm City LGBT Film Festival), QFest, launched in June, has its rst
event Saturday with a 6 p.m. screening (meet and greet at 5) of Married
and Counting, a documentary that nds a same-sex couple traipsing
around the country to wed in every jurisdiction that will let them. Several
ticket packages are available but basic tickets are $10. The screening will be
held at the Overlea Event Center (6809 Belair Road, Baltimore).
Monthly screenings will be held. A full weekend festival-type event is
slated for next June. Details are at bmorequeer.org. Gay lmmaker Del
Shores is scheduled for an April appearance.
Lines has dabbled in short lmmaking himself and has freelanced as a
political consultant as well. He moved to Baltimore in 1995 after six years
in Washington.
He and husband, Brian, whove been together 15 years, live in Baltimores
Hamilton area. He enjoys lm of course and politics in his free time.

Reclaiming Gay Sensibility' s Central Role in
the Progress of Civilization.
Crumbling faade is setting
for familial character study
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Fat is bad.
Lower paying professions suck.
And gay is worst of all.
These are the cardinal and frequently
spoken rules of Carly, the uptight
matriarch in Paul Downs Colaizzos
terric new play Pride in the Falls of
Autrey Mills.
Now premiering at Studio Theatre,
the young playwrights latest effort
staged by out director Michael Kahn,
exposes the underbelly of the American
suburban dream, showing exactly
what it is that makes a privileged yet
essentially miserable family tick.
The Falls of Autrey Mill is a
neighborhood a grandly named
nouveau riche enclave in an unnamed
southern city. Colaizzo imagines a place
rife with leafy cul-de-sacs where quietly
desperate lives unfold behind Roman-
columned facades. Its here that casually
bigoted Carly (stage and screen veteran
Christine Lahti) perseveres to distance
herself from her tacky working class
roots, striving to be todays June
Cleaver with the picture-perfect family.
But as her two sons Tommy and Chad
(played by Christopher McFarland and
Anthony Bowden, respectively) move
into adulthood and her mostly absent
husband Louie (Wayne Duvall) tires of
keeping up with the Jones and looks for
satisfaction elsewhere, Carly loses the
grip on the illusion shes worked so hard
to create, and the results are chaotic.
Pride takes place over several days
preceding a visit from a photographer
whos scheduled to snap the familys
portrait for the community newsletter.
Carly has won best ower garden in the
pricey hood and the triumph must be
chronicled. Its a big deal for Carly, but
her family isnt cooperating. Home from
college, Chad announces to his mother
that hes gay and has a boyfriend. The
older son Tommy tells her that hes
forgoing law school to manage a Chuck
E. Cheese type restaurant, a job that
he nds personally fullling. And her
husband is showing signs of wanting
to leave home altogether. The play is
about how Carly and the family process
these revelations.
Like their shoddily made but well-
appointed home (compliments of scenic
designer James Noone), Carlys family
is also falling apart behind its impressive
exterior. She may appear all sugary
sweetness and light, but just below the
surface shes tough as nails. Further
down shes extremely vulnerable. Darkly
handsome Bowdens Chad comes off
impatient and angry, ostensibly irritated by
his parents inability to accept his sexuality.
But he too isnt exactly what he seems.
Beneath his brusque shell lies a needy,
love-deprived, mixed-up adolescent.
McFarland is endearingly funny as the
overweight and forever hungry Tommy,
who awkwardly walks about foraging for
food with his hands bound in big white
mitten-like bandages (the result of freakish
household accidents). He wears his heart
on his sleeve. Hes eager to connect with
his parents, but hes also careful to protect
himself from their harsh judgment. And
Duvall is perfect as the good ol boy Louie
stuck in a stale marriage.
From the moment the lights come
up, you know exactly who Carly is. Lahti
has taken the time to create a character
not only with words but also her body
and movements. She wrings the
material for all its humor and pathos.
Its a commanding performance and a
pleasure to watch.

Drinks and appetizers
solid; entrees need work
at new Citizen
By JONATHAN HOWARD
After what felt like weeks of stepping
outside my front door and grabbing a
bite at a brand new restaurant on 14th
Street, it nally seemed like the right
time to venture out of the neighborhood
and try someplace new.
I did a bit of research, asked a few
friends, then decided to head up Georgia
Avenue and explore the up-and-coming
restaurant scene in Petworth. There is a bit
of a renaissance happening in this area with
trendy restaurants popping up and many
diners ocking to the area to try them.
The Hitching Post (200 Upshur St.
N.W.) has been serving up Southern
Comfort food for almost half a century
on the eastern edge of Petworth.
Renowned District Chef Barry Dindyal
has captured the traditions of the
original restaurant, including the fried
chicken, when he bought the restaurant
in 2010. In 2005 Domku (which means
little cottage) opened its doors at 821
Upshur St. Domku serves Scandinavian
and Slavic dishes. In April of last year,
Chez Billy began serving the Petworth
neighborhood authentic French food
and cocktails. Chez Billy is named after
the space it currently occupies, Billy
Simpsons Seafood and Steak, which
served as a well-known and upscale
venue for African-American clientele
from 1956 to 1978.
Most recently, Petworth Citizen and
Reading Room (829 Upshur St. N.W.)
named after the community newspaper
that chronicled the neighborhood
from 1916-1951, opened. This is where
I decided to take in some of what
Petworth has to offer. Petworth Citizen is
one of two restaurants that Paul Ruppert
of Room 11 fame is bringing to Upshur
Street. Former CityZen chef Makoto
Hamamura is the head chef, and Kristi
Green, formerly of Firey, has created
the amazing drink menu. With such great
names behind this restaurant, theres a
tremendous amount of potential, but
the restaurant is new and it still needs to
iron out some issues.
We began our meal by ordering several
drinks from the bar menu as well as a
few appetizers. While the house punch
was a little too sugary water for me,
many of the other drinks worked. The
Moscow Mule, which many times is poorly
executed, was a superbly concocted drink
at Citizen. My favorite drink of the evening
was the Boo Radley, consisting of tequila
blanco, lime juice and ginger beer. They
were so good, I had two.
We were also impressed with our
array of appetizers: the chicken wings
were delicious with a strong-but-not-
overpowering ginger and garlic soy
sauce, and the chicken fell off the bone.
Several people at the table enjoyed the
wedge salad, which consisted (Im told)
of fresh bright green lettuce leaves. The
blue cheese on top looked so delicious,
I even stuck my fork in and tasted the
perfectly pungent dressing. The queso
fundido with chorizo was a heavy but
excellent appetizer.
Unfortunately, as the main courses
arrived, it appeared that our luck had run
out. The fried chicken sausage sandwich
was dangerously undercooked and the
homemade chorizo burger was delivered
cold. The short ribs were a bit tough and
the mac and cheese was rather ordinary.
The cheddar cheeseburger was the top
plate of the evening.
After a lackluster group of entrees,
the Lizzys Goat Cheese Cake with
Roasted Coriander Pineapple Jam put
this restaurant back in the game it
was a decadent masterpiece. All the
dishes on the menu have potential but
were not executed entirely correct. Its
understandable to a point Petworth
Citizen is still in its infancy.

NEWMYER FLYER PRESENTS:
A TRIBUTE TO
THE LAST WALTZ
British-set ghost story
packs thrills and chills
Everything checked out ne.
You made a sweep of the house at
bedtime, nothing amiss. Security, check. No
problems, check, and you locked the door.
Didnt you? When you jolted awake
at 3 a.m., hearing something that wasnt
there, you wondered. Are you alone?
Safe? Or, as in the new book This
House is Haunted by John Boyne, do
you have unseen company?
Charles Dickens killed her father.
That was where Eliza Caine squarely
laid the blame. Father had had a cough
for some time, but he insisted he was well
enough to go listen to Mr. Dickens read
from his latest novel. Unable to deny her
father this pleasure, Eliza relented and
they walked to the speakers hall on a
chilly night but between illness and
the dreadful London weather, her father
was dead within days.
Orphaned at age 21, Eliza had no
friends and no suitors. Knowing she had
inherited neither her mothers beauty
nor her fathers handsomeness, she
accepted spinsterhood, though she did
love children and had loved working
as a teacher of small girls at a nearby
school. Still, she had never felt so alone.
And then she saw the advert, and
made a rash, impulsive decision.
One H. Bennet from Gaudlin Hall
was looking for a governess for two young
children, a position that needed to be
lled immediately. Gaudlin Hall was in
the county of Norfolk, and though Eliza
had never been outside London, the job
seemed to be just the change she needed.
She had scarcely gotten to the depot
when odd things began to happen. Strong
hands tried to push her in front of a train,
but no one was standing nearby. Friendly
townspeople turned away in fright when
she told them where shed be employed.
And though the children, 8-year-old
Eustace and 12-year-old Isabella, were little
dears, Eliza thought it strange that adults
were missing from Gaudlin Hall.
Never a shrinking violet, Eliza began to
ask questions and, in answer, heard tales
of madness and murder, things best left
unspoken, and a mother with a deadly
vow. That alone mightve scared Eliza
away, but then the ghostly hands returned
and with them, a ght for her life.
Set in Victorian England, This House
is Haunted possesses the important
ingredients for a classic ghost story.
Theres a musty castle, gloomy weather,
an evil presence, a proper governess
and creepy little kids.
The twist is in the details that author
John Boyne offers.
Pay careful attention, and youll see tiny
dashes of modern-type scandal. Theres
a strong female character who dares to
go against the expectations of her day.
Boyne even hides bits of humor inside this
story, all of which make this novel one that
Dickens himself might envy.
Readers who favor the classics will
count this among their new favorites.
Novel lovers will love it for its seasonal
creepiness. If you crave both fright
and delight this week, This House is
Haunted is a book to check out.

Next weekends g.life
expo offers seminar on
real estate investing
By TED SMITH
The D.C. area has historically had a
strong rental market for a diverse and
mobile population.
In previous columns, Ive written for
people considering their rst home
purchase about why it makes nancial
sense to buy instead of rent. In this
column, I want to address people who
are moving up or moving out of their
rst house: If you can afford it, keeping
your home and renting it out can make
more nancial sense than you think
(especially if you can get positive cash
ow out of the house).
Looking to diversify your retirement
savings plan? Holding rental real estate
can augment your savings and invest-
ments and provide a strong income
stream in the future.
If you are interested in learning
more, you can do so at the panel en-
titled Investing in Rental Real Estate
at the g.life U program that is part of
g.life, A Day in D.C., All Things LGBT
sponsored by the Capitol Area Gay &
Lesbian Chamber of Commerce at the
Marriott Wardman Park on Nov. 9 from
10 a.m.-5 p.m. The g.life U program will
offer speakers and panels focusing on
aspects of personal and professional
life for LGBT people.
In the rental real estate panel, a -
nancial planner, real estate agent, a
mortgage banker and a property man-
ager will discuss why rental real estate
might be appropriate for you, how to
nd properties that will make sense for
rental, how to nance the purchase and
what to do once you have the property.
Geared toward the small investor or
those just thinking about getting start-
ed, this panel will provide a high level
overview of how to get started as a real
estate investor. Each panelist will speak
from a particular perspective:
Financial planner Why holding
rental real estate is a good diversica-
tion of investments for retirement.
Mortgage lender What lenders
look for when people wish to nance
an investment purchase.
Real estate agent How a profes-
sional agent can help you nd the ideal
investment property.
Property manager How a rental
management company can care for
your investment while the value grows
and take the burden of being a land-
lord off your plate.
Moderated by someone who is al-
ready a successful real estate investor,
the panel will begin promptly at 2 p.m.
and end by 2:50 p.m. But the panelists
will stay around afterward to chat with
anyone interested in taking the next
steps as a potential investor.
You can nd out more about g.life
overall by going to the web site at g-
lifeexpo.com. While there, you can also
register for free for this amazing event
now in its second year.

WorkDistrict offers
environment for micro-
businesses, tech start-ups
By MARK LEE
Grafti art beckons the way.
Scanning the unembellished building
entrance interior, colorful urban tagger
graphics emblazon otherwise plain walls
at the elevator and catch the eye. Its a vi-
sual motif that continues as you step out
onto the oor above, serving as a guide
toward a doorway at the end of a short
bend in the hall.
They are kept remnants of Living So-
cials prior use of the building as a party
space in an industrial-sized structure for-
merly housing District Cablevision broad-
cast studios. Stretching along a block
north of the U Street corridor at Florida
Ave., the prominent three-level brick
building at 2217 14th St., N.W., is now
home to ofces on the top oor and the
CrossFit Praxis gym at street level.
WorkDistrict a 3,000 sq. ft. collabora-
tive workspace occupying the second oor
opened in February. Founded by local
attorney Patrick Menasco, the facility offers
variable low-cost working environments for
both individuals and micro-business teams
on a monthly or drop-in basis.
Splashed with contemporary art and
home to tech startups, small enterprises
and independent entrepreneurs, a relaxed
ambience engenders casual interactions.
However, like Menascos down-to-business
demeanor when he works out of the space
a couple days each week, its a productive
place amidst the buzz of focused activity.
WorkDistrict offers both shared open
workspace and private ofces, accom-
modating approximately 74 workers split
between each. All ve private ofces are
currently contracted. Two former dedicat-
ed ofce occupants recently graduated
to commercial Class A and B ofce space
elsewhere.
Shared-space memberships are offered
at an introductory rate of only $99 for the
rst month, half of the $199 regular fee.
Requiring no long-term commitment, us-
ers contract by the month. A daily drop-in
rate is also available. WiFi, Ethernet, fax and
phone connections, copy and printer ser-
vices, and a mailing address are provided.
A separate conference room and large
presentation space are available for mem-
ber use or non-member rental. Provided a
full kitchen and free organic coffee, mem-
bers enjoy 24-7 key access. Convenient to
public transportation and surrounded by
restaurants and eateries, rushing to meet
clients off-site or grabbing lunch is easy.
Menasco, a 44-year-old partner at
white-shoe law rm Steptoe & Johnson,
jokes he is one of the few lawyers in town
who still likes his job 20 years into it. Hes
quick to add that his involvement with real
estate development projects and entre-
preneurial engagements provide a spark
to his legal career.
I have always sought to diversify my life
to be around creative people and make it
more interesting, Menasco says.
An investor in the building, Menasco
was encouraged to launch the project by
friends at Crowdfund Capital Advisors,
specialists in crowdfunding, currently the
subject of preliminary regulations released
last week by the Securities and Exchange
Commission. Similar to social media fund-
raising, the nance strategy allows start-ups
and emerging enterprises to seek venture
capital from investors interested in buying a
stake in a company. Once the rules are nal,
WorkDistrict plans to assist businesses with
informational resources for seeking this type
of equity funding.
Co-working spaces are challenging en-
terprises serving transitional clients. Work-
District introduces the facility to tech types
and business initiators by hosting social
and professional events attracting several
hundred attendees to the site each month.
Menascos successful operation is the result
of encouraging collegial attitudes, exibly
adapting to the needs of users and offering
a full complement of workplace amenities
at very affordable rates.
A diversifying workforce engaged in
creative enterprise development and a bur-
geoning tech industry allows WorkDistrict
to serve entrepreneurs seeking space to
nurture a business and make it grow.
