Avasthas of Grahas
1. O Maharishi Parashar, you have earlier stated, that the Avasthas, or states of the Grahas are to be considered in the context of the effects of the Grahas. Be so kind to tell me about this. 2. O excellent of Brahmins, various kinds of Avasthas of the Grahas have been ex ounded. Out of these, ! "ill #ive you the summary of Baal $infant% and other states of the Grahas. &. Baal, 'umar, (uv, )riddh and Mrit Avastha $Baal Adi Avasthas%. !nfant, youthful, adolescent, old and dead are the states of the Grahas, laced in the ascendin# order at the rate of six de#rees in odd *ashis. !n the case of even *ashis this arran#ement is in reverse order. $)riddh + Advanced, Mrit + !n extremis% ,. *esults. One fourth, half, full, ne#li#ible and nil are the #rades of the results, due to a Grah in infant, youthful, adolescent, old and dead Avasthas. -. A"akenin#, .reamin# and /lee in# /tates. !f a Grah is in its o"n *ashi, or in exaltation, it is said to be in a state of a"akenin# $alertness%. !n the *ashi of a friend, or of a neutral it is in dreamin# state, "hile in an enemy0s *ashi, or in debilitation it is in a state of slee in#. 1. Other 'inds of /tates. 3here are nine kinds of other Avasthas, vi4. .i t, /"asth, Pramudit, /hanta, .in, )ikal, .uhkhit, 'hal and 'o . 5+16. !f a Grah is in its exaltation *ashi, it is in .i t Avastha, if in its o"n *ashi, it is in /"asth, if in a #reat friend0s *ashi, it is in Pramudit, if in a friendly *ashi, it is in /hanta, if in a neutral *ashi, it is in .in, if a Grah is yuti "ith a malefic, it is in )ikal, if is in an enemy0s *ashi, it is in .uhkhit, if in a #reat enemy0s *ashi, it is in 'hal and, if a Grah is bein# ecli sed by /7rya, it is in 'o . .e endin# on such a state of the Grah, the Bhava, occu ied by it "ill obtain corres ondin# effects. 11+15. (et other Avasthas. 8a99it, Garvit, 'shudhit, 3rushit, Mudit and 'shobhit are the other kinds of Avasthas, due to the Grahas. Placed in Putr Bhava, if a Grah is associated "ith *ahu, or 'etu, or "ith /7rya, :ani, or Man#al, it is in 8a99it Avastha. !f a Grah is in exaltation, or in Mooltrikon, it is Garvit. !f a Grah is in an enemy0s *ashi, or yuti "ith an enemy, or receives a .rishti from an enemy, or even, if a Grah is yuti "ith :ani, the Avastha is 'shudhit. !f a Grah is in a "atery *ashi and receives a .rishti from a malefic, but does not receive a .rishti from a benefic, the Avastha is called 3rushit. !f a Grah is in a friendly *ashi, or is yuti "ith, or receives a .rishti from a benefic, or is yuti "ith Guru, it is said to be in Mudit Avastha. !f a Grah is yuti "ith /7rya and receives a .rishti from, or is yuti "ith a malefic, or receives a .rishti from an enemy, it is said to be in 'shobhit. 3he Bhavas, occu ied by a Grah in 'shudhit, or in 'shobhit, are destroyed.

A Grah in 8a99it "ill #ive aversion to God, loss of intelli#ence, loss of child, interest in evil s eeches and listlessness in #ood thin#s. A Grah in 'shobhit "ill #ive acute enury, evil dis osition, miseries, financial debacles, distress to feet and obstruction to income, due to royal "rath. A Grah in 'shudhit "ill cause do"nfall, due to #rief and assion, #rief on account of relatives, hysical decline, troubles from enemies, financial distress, loss of hysical stren#th and an ecli sed mind, due to miseries. A Grah in 3rushit Avastha "ill cause diseases throu#h association "ith females, leadin# over "icked deeds, loss of "ealth, due to one0s o"n men, hysical "eakness, miseries, caused by evil eo le and decline of honour. &6+&2. ?alculation of /hayan Adi Avasthas. @o" ! "ill tell you of the Avasthas, vi4. /hayan, A avesan, @etra ani, Prakash, Gaman, A#aman, /abh, A#am, Bho9an, @ritya 8i s, 'autuk and @idr and the ?hesthas of such Avasthas. @ote the number of the star, occu ied by the Grah, for "hich an Avastha is to be calculated. Multi ly that number by the number, denoted by the Grah $/7rya 1 to :ani 2%. 3he fi#ure so arrived at should a#ain be multi lied by the number of the @avBCD, "here the Grah is in. Add to this the number of the birth asterism $rulin# star, the one, occu ied by ?andr%, the number of Ghatis of birth and the number of *ashis, 8a#n #ained from Mesh $Mesh 1, )rishabh 2 and so forth%. 3his fi#ure should be divided by 12 and the remainder "ill indicate the corres ondin# Avastha of the Grah. 3he sub+state in the said Avastha can be found out in the follo"in# "ay.
