Welcome
Wuxi, dubbed the Little Shanghai, referring to its massive development in economy, is a city with a history of 3,000 years. When two fugitive princes found this area, where the tin deposits were abundant, they called it Youxi, meaning has lots of tin in Mandarin Chinese. After the tin mine ran out in 25 A.D., it got the present name Wuxi, meaning in Chinese no more tin. Wuxi is one of important origins for the Wu Culture, which has dominated the region of Yangtze River South since then.

Tourism
Wuxi is a major tourist area of the Lower Yangtze Delta. It has both natural and man-made places of interest. The city was built on the shore of Lake Tai with the lake providing a rich tourism resource. Noted spots include Yuantouzhu (the Islet of Turtlehead), and the Grand Canal passing through the city. Located south of the Long Mountain, the 88 metres (289 ft) tall Grand Buddha at Ling Shan is one of the largest Buddha statues in China, and the ninth tallest statue worldwide.

Lake Tai
Lake Tai, or Tai Lake or Lake Taihu or Taihu Lake, is a large lake in the Yangtze Delta plain, on the border of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in Eastern China. The waters of the lake belong to the former in its entirety with part of its southern shore forming the boundary between the two provinces. With an area of 2,250 km and an average depth of 2 metres, it is the third largest freshwater lake in China.

Scenic locations
The lake is renowned for its unique limestone formations. These Chinese scholars rocks are often prized as a decorating material for the traditional Chinese garden, especially in areas such as Suzhou. One of the best locations to view the lake is Xihui Park in the west of Wuxi. By climbing the summit of Dragon Light Pagoda inside the park, you will get a birds eye view of the city and the lake. Yuantouzhu (Turtle Head Isle) is another prominent region for tourists. It received this title because its outline resembles a turtle head. The region gained its fame in the early 20th century and it contains more than ten scenic sites for visit.

Lingshan
The scenic spot is composed of many well-designed tourist attractions including the Grand Buddha with 88 meters in height, Nine Dragons Bathing the Baby Buddha- a group of large-sized dynamic musical sculpture, Lingshan Buddhist Palace --- the site of world Buddhist forum, the large-scale bronze carving The Vanquishing Demons to Sambodhi and Five Seal Mandala. Whats more, through the combination of sound, light and electricity facilities, a grand musical ceremony Eulogy of Lingshan lucky also gives visitors deep impression, which demonstrates adventures of Sakyamunis mind of being wise and enlightened. With powerful inspiration of religious culture, great divergence of historical culture and fine attraction of the scenery of humanities, Lingshan is particular among Chinese theme scenic spots and becomes the important world-famous site for visitors from all over the world to appreciate the Buddhism culture.

The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal, stretching nearly 1,120 miles from Beijing to Hangzhou, is the worlds longest and oldest canal and is still a major artery in the eastern part of China. Many places, especially in the area west of Shanghai, are historical tourist destinations: Suzhou, Zhouzhuang, Tongli and Wuxi. The city straddles the canal and also borders lovely Taihu Lake, the thirdlargest freshwater lake in China. The 3.5mile stretch of the canal through Wuxi is very scenic, especially the eastern part, where a major restoration project is under way to rebuild many of the old houses and other buildings that line the banks. If you step away from the new developments, you are quickly in a maze of narrow streets where family and commercial life seems unchanged from years ago. A busy fruit and vegetable market hums with activity while artisans ply their trades using traditional implements.

Formation
Scientific studies suggest that Lake Tais circular structure is the result of a meteor impact based on the discovery of shatter cones, shock metamorphosed quartz, microtektites, and shock metamorphic unloading fractures. Recent science has dated the possible impact to be greater than 70 million years old and possibly from the Late Devonian Period. Fossils indicate that Lake Tai was dry land until the ingression of the East China Sea during the Holocene epoch.
