Instructions: Closed book you may use ONE 3X5 card with formulas Read each problem carefully. There are 5 problems, worth a total of 47 points. There is one bonus problem worth an additional 5 points. It is critical that you show all of your work - don't just write down your answers Good luck!

Problem 1 ( 10 points)___________ Problem 2 ( 10 points) ___________ Problem 3 ( 10 points) ___________ Problem 4 ( 7 points) ___________ Problem 5 ( 10 points) ___________ Bonus Problem ( 5 points) ___________ Total :

1) (Total 10 points) Two point charges, q1 = +1.0 x 10-6 C and q2 = -4.0 x 10-6 C, are separated by a distance of 0.10 m. q1 0.1m q2

a) (2 points) Which object experiences the larger electrostatic forcethe object with q1 the object with q2 , or neither?

b) (2 points) What is the direction of the electric field vector at the midpoint of the line joining the two objects?

c) (4 points) find the point P along the line passing through q1 and q2 at which the electric field due to the charges is zero.

d) (2 points) Find the force acting on a +2.0 x 10-6 C located at point P.

2) (Total 10 points) Two concentric conducting spherical shells are shown in the figure. The radius of the small sphere is r=a, and the radius of the big sphere is r=b. The charge carried by the small sphere is q and that of the large sphere is Q.

a) (3 points) Determine the electric field at r< a b a

b) (4 points) Determine the electric field at a<r< b

c) (3 points) Determine the electric field at r>b

3) (Total 10 points)

I) In the following figure, the dashed line denotes a Gaussian surface enclosing part of a distribution of four positive charges

(a) (3 points) Which charges contribute to the electric field at P?

(b) (3 points) What is the flux through the surface?

II) (4 points) 12 equal charges +q are situated one on each numeral of a clock. What is the net force on a test charge Q at the center of the clock?

4) (Total 7 points) A ball of mass, m = 2 g is suspended by a l = 20 cm long string as in the Fig. in a constant electric field of E = 1000 N/C. If the string makes an angle of = 15 o with respect to the vertical, what is the net charge on the ball?

5) (Total 10 points) Three charges are situated at the corners of a square (side a) as shown in the figure -q

a q a -q

a) (6 points) Find the electric potential at the empty corner of the square

b) (4 points) How much work does it take to bring another charge +q, from far away and place it in the empty corner?

(Total 5 points) Bonus question Three pithballs are suspended from thin threads. Various objects are then rubbed against other objects (nylon against silk, glass against polyester, etc.) and each of the pithballs is charged by touching them with one of these objects. It is found that pithballs 1 and 2 repel each other and that pithballs 2 and 3 repel each other. From this we can conclude that 1. 1 and 3 carry charges of opposite sign. 2. 1 and 3 carry charges of equal sign. 3. All three carry the charges of the same sign. 4. One of the objects carries no charge. 5. More experiments are required to determine the sign of the charges. EXPLAIN.
