Some important points to remember on poultry rearing

1. BUILDING PREPARATION: All buildings especially the Brooder Houses should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with proper insecticides and disinfectants. The building should remain empty for a minimum period of 2 (two) weeks before the arrival of a new flock. Before new chicks arrive, the brooder should have everything ready and heated for 12 hours before new chicks arrive. The brooder should be keptat a constant temperature of 30\") to 35C during the first week of rearing. This temperature should be reduces by 5 degrees as each week passes. 2. FLOOR SPACE: Chicks should always be started in brooders. Later floor space should be expanded as they grow to 1 (one) square foot or more for Broilers and 2 (two) square feet or more for layers.
3, ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Adequate temperature. Fresh feed and water. Fresh air. Sufficient light. These requirements will be dictated by the birds' behavior. When these requirements are met the chicks will settle happily and quietly. If not, they will huddle together and show distress and the cause should be found and rectified. 4. Upon chick arrival, they should be placed near water and feed in the heated brooder. If the room is too large, chick guards should be used and the area should be .expanded as the chicks grow, The chick guards should be removed after 2 (two) weeks. 5. FEEDI G: Bn ilers: They should be started with Broiler Starter Mash. for the first 3 (three) weeks Aft r three weeks they should be fed with Broiler Finisher, up to marketing time- (6 to 8 weeks). Layers: From the 1st day to the 8th week, chick mash is recommended. From the 8th week to the 20th week they should be fed on Growers mash, then finally fed on Layers Mash throughout the laying period .. 6, As chicks grow, the water troughs should be replaced with bigger troughs that are suitable for mature birds. 7 P F_ASITE~: 11 is very eo on for chicks to have internal parasites such as round worms, and external parasites such as lice, mites- and bed bugs. Routine programs should be exercised to eradicate them, Mice and rats should also be eradicated totally. 8. It is very important to give chicks fresh feeds and water at all time and keep their houses dry, Feed wastage must be prevented at all times. 9, A strict vaccination program must be followed. Isolation of poultry is also very important so as to avoid contamination from other birds.
