This entry shall enable all ieXwiki members to create a list of software, that will work with Vista
RTM
(Build 6000), or won't work, so that it's possible to check that even before installation. Feel free to

Microsoft has now published a list of programs compatible with Windows Vista in their knowledge
base, KB933305: Applications that have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo or the "Works
with Windows Vista" logo.
NOTES:
• Entries are in alphabetical order.

• Please mention the version/build number of the software and if it applies to the 32-bit
and/or the 64-bit beta OS (e.g. "Software vX.XX.XXXX (32- and 64-bit)")!
• On 32-bit Vista RTM, 16-bit or 32-bit Windows programs which uses 16-bit drivers or
VxDs will not work anyway as on any NT systems. 16-bit fullscreen DOS programs do not
work.

• Ahead Nero 6.6.1.4 (32-bit) (installs if you ignore Vista warnings but also causes Explorer
crashes when viewing directories that have video files in them, as well as file copy/move
operations - the Explorer crashes (COM Surrogate failures) can be corrected by making
modifications to Nero specific merit values using DirectShow Filter Manager 0.5 (freeware) but
the file copy/move operations cannot - surprisingly, a better solution is to install Nero inside a
Windows XP virtual machine (ie. using VMWare Server) and let Nero burn discs from within
the VM using the burner residing outside the VM in Vista - suprisingly, this works perfectly)
• UltraCopy 9.5 Premium Edition -- During the files are saving to system, an error message
"FM20.dll, DllRegistryServer unsuccessfull, code 0x8002801C, accessing OLE registry" is
received. Click "Ignore". The setup finishes and program works perfectly.

Firewalls / IDS's
• COMODO Firewall Pro 2.4.5.111 BETA (32-bit) -- Seems to work fine despite warnings from
Vista to the contrary during installation. Setup EXE file must be run in Windows XP
compatibility mode.
Games
• Atari 80 Classic Games. Launcher and config screens have color (palette) distortion, but games
run normally.
• Albatross18: Realms of Pangya (no longer blacklisted as of 3.13c but still has issues; game is
choppy and there is no audio from system during game playback)
• Civilization IV (32-bit) - add "d3dx9_26.dll" to the program's folder. See Civfanatics for
patches. All Civ IV versions and expansions work in 32 and 64-bit Vista.
• Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Game works fine during about 5 minutes. Then it crashes
to the desktop. It's playable, if you have patience.
• Flyff v1.8 (32-bit)
o Download some extra files: here.
o Extract the two files you downloaded (Flyff.exe and Neuz.exe (the new ones)) to the
main folder of Flyff, mostly C:\Program_Files\Gpotato\Flyff . If asked to replace the
files, say yes, since they already exist.
o Run Flyff.exe as admin (right click, execute as admin).
• Heroes of might and Magic V (32-bit). Worked in Vista Ultimate 64 bits. It runs as 32bit
application. Set compatibility as WinXP SP2 and give the user you want to run it read/writte
permissions to the directory where it is installed, or the entire Pc may crash.
• LineAge II Chronicle 4 (32-bit) - Game not support DirectX 9, not start.
• Madden 07 (32-bit) - Game freezes during fieldgoals.
• Maple Story (32-bit) - GameGuard Error 360: Right-click and choose Run As Administrator.
• Microsoft Best of Entertainment Pack (32-bit) - installation will crash, but all files do install and
work properly without any further problems
• Microsoft Motorcross Madness 2 - on x86, download d3drm.dll and put in the install folder.
Then it runs fine.
• Max Payne v1.00 (This game sometimes cannot work/start the first level/open main menu under
Windows XP and Vista. When Max Payne is loaded, the game crashes with an program error
before main menu/before starting first level. But, this problem can be solved. The intro movie
file of Max Payne " intro.mpg " is broken. Rename a .mpg file as " intro ", then copy it and
overwrite with normal " intro.mpg ".
• Myst I : The game runs, there are sound but you have only a black screen (on Windows XP
either). You need to download and install Quick Time 6.5.2 (note : Quick Time 7 or Quick
Time Alternative do not work)
• NCSoft City of Heroes - game installs and updates correctly under Vista X64 with nVidia
v97.34 drivers, but no cursor is displayed with the mouse
• Need for Speed: Carbon (With 98/ME Compatibility mode, must change compatibility for 2
files, NFSC.exe and Need for Speed Carbon_code.exe. Still crashes now and then for some
people, EA yet to release a working patch for Vista, otherwise you can delete the MOVIES
folder to run it without problems & without movies :D)
• Neverend - sound stops working after you fight in your first battle (you can still read the text
version of all the conversations
• Oblivion - has very frequent crashes if using "alt+tab" keystroke when you return back to the
game.Is NO vista problem, see original oblivion readme
• Painkiller - some random crashes making the game close and windows freezes. Installing the
latest patches and running the game as administrator, on XP Compatibility seem to help...
• Railroad Tycoon III (For those whom hate Railroads) will work on Windowze Vista, do the

• Riven (the sequel to Myst) (32-bit). Install the game but don't run it. Download this file (DLL
from QuickTime 2), unzip it and copy all the files in the same directory where Riven had been
installed. Apply this unofficial patch afterwards and run the Game as administrator.
• Sid Meier's Railroads! v1.1 (64-bit) - Game installs and runs but will frequently crash out to the
desktop without warning. It is playable if you have patience with the crashes, and save often. It
has not crashed in 6 hours when set to Win XP SP2 compatibility mode.
• SimCity 4 w/ expansion pack - some users reported this not working at all. (Note: A graphics
card with pixel shader 2.0 and 64MB or higher memory may be necessary for this to function.)
• SouthPark Super Mario v2.1 (32-bit) - You need to disable the 'shift' sticky-key
• SpaceCowboy v0.3.3.44 (32-bit) - you need to run as admin
• Star Wars: Empire at War (32-bit) - Might display SecuRom error, can be worked around in
compatibility mode XP SP2.
• The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Bloodmoon expansion (32-bit): Installer problems, before
installation or reinstall, give the user TrustedInstaller 'full control' to te map: /Morrowind/data

• The moment of silence (German version) (32-bit): I found an unofficial patch here (not tested)

stating "The color scheme has been changed" and Windows has to temporarily change the color
scheme to Vista Basic. PSP runs normally, and the color scheme changes back once you exit the

• Jasc Paint Shop Pro X - works fine but takes ages to "update cache" before operating
• Terragen Scenery Generator; usually works just fine, but some issues have come up regarding
installation problems and flat-out non-compatibility.

the association.
• MediaMax XL (32-bit) : go to the install directory and assign "run as admin" for the two .exe

Path "C:\Users\Username\Pictures" is not recognized and nothing is shown. On the other hands, folder
"C:\Documents and Settings" is still listed in folders view although is not present in Vista anymore.
Pictures in another folders are shown correctly, so seems there is some hard link for user folder that
can't be addressed properly.
Web Servers
• Apache Tomcat 6.0
Tomcat 6 will run on Vista, a small fix is needed. In the [JRE]/bin directory, there's a file named
msvcr71.dll. This file needs to be copied to [Tomcat]/bin.

• Paragon Mount Everything 3.5 (32-bit) -- installs, but not compatible
• Symantec Partition Magic 8.0 (will back up the partitions but not the boot record/manager - as a
workaround, reinstall Vista to C:\ (this recreates the boot manager), then restore your C: Vista
partition from your image)
Financial
• Starmoney 5.0 (32-bit) HBCI will work, but no Screenscrapping. Solution announced for
middle of May 07
Firewalls / IDS's
• Agnitum Outpost 4.0 (971.584 build 079 - 1007.7323 build 591) - 32/64 bit
• AVG Internet suite: firewall component doesn't install, no warnings, no error messageg. Just
MIA. According to AVG due to "bugs in Vista's network"....
• Comodo Free Firewall 3.0, works well on Vista Home Premium though it tends to generate a
large number of informational pop-up messages and user queries to allow/deny application
activity.
• ISS BlackICE Server Protection v3.6. - 32/64 Bit
• PC Tools Firewall Plus 1.0.0.10
• PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6b & 6c - 32/64 bit - Installs and seems to work but in fact doesn't
because driver won't install to Vista. It's useless atm. Old Windows 98/ME version works but it
only blocks TCP connections. There are other methods to block the blocklisted ports without
PG2, just google for it.
• PeerGuardian 2.0 RC1 Test 2 (tested with 32bit) - Installs and blocks IPs correctly. However
UAC blocks it at startup and Tray-Icon can sometimes disappear (delete lists and cache.p2b and
it should work again).
• Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall - 4.3.268
• WatchGuard System Monitor 8.3 (Policy Manager won't start because installer can't create
folders under Documents and Settings, which are required for firewall config files - as a work
around, install Windows XP in a virtual machine in Vista and run WSM inside that to give
yourself the same effect)
• Webroot Desktop Firewall 1.3
• Zone Labs ZoneAlarm - ### WARNING: The final version of ZoneAlarm FREE on Vista32
Ultimate also installs a hidden patch KB929547 which breaks OEM BIOS cracks (Paradox,
VistaLoader etc.) on most machines which will make you activate Vista if you have not got the
legit version (better to be legit anyway) but just a warning to you budding pirates out there. :)
Otherwise the Firewall works fine although some people on various forums have had many
problems but some none at all on legit Vista installs. The patch silently installed by ZoneAlarm
messes up your crack and is actually a bug in Vista and not ZoneAlarm as far as I heard. It is
better to buy Vista even at the RIP-OFF Greedy BillyGoat prices then trying to keep up with
cracking it. I bought a 3 pack cheap and it was worth it.
• [14]I recently installed Vista Firewall Control from http://sphinx-soft.com and found it to be
extremely effective in protecting my computer. I tested it with GRC, PC Flank and Nortons test
site and my machine was completely stealthed. The best part was, all of my programs worked
without any problems. I had installed PC Tools F/W and I kept loosing my DSL connection,
tried Jetico and the amount of popups was at the point of being rediculous, Zonealarm was a
total resource hog. Vista Firewall Control only uses 3.2 mg of memory and with Vista you need
all the savings you can get on memory usage. This program is superior to all other firewalls
currently on the market for Vista. I would more than highly recommend this software to the
home user or professionals.
FTP
• Filezilla (32-bit) - Installs, but can't get access to upload. Also glitches your whole pc. (tested
on Vista Home Premium)
• WS FTP 2007 Home - Fails on Install - Will not install.
• WS-FTP 7 Professional - Will install but fails to start
Games
• Ankh II : Hearth of Osiris (32-bit): The game crashes during the chapter II and V too - it's not
possible to finish the game on Vista.
• Axis and Allies. Installs but fails to run. Adjusting compatibility fails to work (Tested on 32 bit)
• Caesar III Will keep asking to insert CD, even if it is.
• Black Buccaneer - Game does not install (64-Bit and 32-Bit)
• City Life (32-bit) - possibly due to Starforce protection (used D2D and still does not work
possible fix on the way.)
• Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood Setup fails to launch or takes a while.
• Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (32-bit) - Missing Spooge File (Directx) unable to load game.
o I can play it without problems on my 32-bit Vista Home Premium system.
o NOTE: If you receive the DirectX "Missing Spooge File" error, install DirectX 9.0c
from Microsoft - it will not affect DirextX 10.
• Dark Messiah of Might and Magic - Officially XP only. Some report it works, others it doesn't.
UBISoft won't update - so don't bother trying.
• Doomsday 3D HQ Engine, if it's tried to be used with Direct3D setting at the graphic options. -
Although DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft and the latest updated version of your graphic card's
driver had been installed fully well, when launching the game, an error message which tells us
that there occured a graphical processing error appears suddenly and you can't enter the game. I
couldn't find any way to fix it. So, I think we have to choose "OpenGL".
• Fahrenheit - MSI needs to be edited, if installation worked game does not start (64-Bit, 32-Bit?)
• F.E.A.R Extraction Point (expansion) has major problems on all platforms, including XP.
o (Works fine for me on Vista 64-bit, does crash, albeit rarely, and may or may not be the
game's fault.)
• Fritz chess 9 (32 and 64-bit) - Incompatible according to manufacturer and installation setup.
Didn't try to install after the warning. FRITZ9 UPDATE 30th APRIL 2008 by 'aboutblank':
Successfully installed Fritz9 and tested major functions (including playing board, database, and
PlayChess server) without any problem. (Did not receive any warning during install, and install
appeared to proceed normally.) Using Fritz9 32 bit on Windows Vista 32 bit with Service Pack
1 installed. Note: Prior to installing Fritz9, installed Chessbase Light 2007, which is a free chess
database program available on Chessbase.com. Chessbase Light 2007 sets up the Chessbase
directory strutcture, into which Fritz9 is installed. Uncertain as to whether this is necessary to
insure proper install of Fritz9, but have had problems in the past installing Fritz9 first, then
other Chessbase product, wherein directory structures did not seem to match properly, causing
minor problems. (Others on the web have installed Fritz9 under Vista without problems, so
suspect that the installation of Chessbase Light 2007 is not necessary.) END OF FRITZ9
UPDATE.
• Gametap -- Doesn't run in Vista. Gametap is working on an update.
• HomeWorld 2(32bit) -- Doesn't work at all, when you start it, the game crashes to desktop
immediately, no error messages.
o Works fine on my rig (AMD Athlon X2 4200+, GeForce 7600GT) on Vista 64-bit with
no problems.
o Note from user Googling Vista fixes: if you have nVidia video cards, download the
latest drivers for them, make sure the OS has Vista selected when downloading, and
HW2 works smoothly. Still having random crashes with mods though.
o Works on mine as well. The latest drivers for nVidia are the fix. I do not know about
ATI cards or Intel CPU's.
• Israeli Air Force -- Not even on compatibility mode
• Knight Online v1.453 (32-bit) -- Doesn't accept compatibility mode, displays diag about invalid
OS installed.
• Just Cause Demo (32-bit),works for a while but has some major issues,crashes system,need to
hard reset,also has some sound problems.
• No One Lives Forever(vista 64 bit),incompatible due to the fact that the installer .exe is a 32bit
file.Should work under vista 32bit.
• Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault Ver1.1 on 64-bit Ultimate. Installs fine although, crashes at
game launch
o I had no problems with 64 Ultimate and latest nVidia drivers.
• Multi Theft Auto (MTA) v1.1 (32-bit) -- Crashes no matter what you do
• Midnight Club II - Runs, but then crashes to desktop on load.
• Railroad Tycoon 3 with v1.05 patch and Coast to Coast Expansion - crashes as soon as the main
menu loads with no explanation. I've tried all compatibility modes with no success; I've tried
RT3's batch files that load its safe modes/windowed/no sound modes without success. Intro
video plays but that's it. On Vista 64-bit, AMD Athlon X2 4200+, GeForce 7600GT.
o I also experienced this problem running vista 32 bit until I disabled Windows Defender,
while not the ideal solution it should allow the game to run problem free.
• RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 [Original and all Add-Ons] (Vista 32-bit) - extremely poor frame rates
(using both Microsoft Vista and nVidia XP drivers) and no audio. On Vista 32-bit, GeForce 3
Ti 200, Audigy 2 ZX. See also RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 under 'Works' section
• Scarface: The World is Yours -- Completely incompatible with Vista when using NVidia video
cards (all kinds); may be able to run with certain ATI models.
• Second Life (32-bit) -- Doesn't recognize video card, attempts to start anyway & fails. Depends
on video card, works fine with GeForce 7600GT. Works with GeForce 8800 GTS/Geforce FX
5200 (with nVidia drivers)
o works fine on my computer but not brothers go figure. my guess is it works on random
computers
• Settlers II - Install stopped at start.
• Supreme Commander (32-bit): game has serious Frame Rate issues, I have a good rig and on
LOWEST settings the frame rate is 10 and drops to 3 most of the time
o I ran it in vista 64 bits with E6600, 8800gts and 2GB DDR 2, at almost maximum
setting without frame rate issues.
o I ran it in Vista 64 with E6420, 8600GT, 4GB DDR2, at max settings with no frame rate
issues (15-25 in campaign).
o Forged Alliance is more demanding of resources. An 8600+ video card, 2GB, 2GHz
CPU is minimum effective system.
• Silkroad Online (32-bit) -- Does not work.
• SpellForce 2 (64-bit) -- Does not work. Can not be patched.
• SpellForce 2 (32-bit) -- Does not work "out of the box". You need to download d3dx9_25 to
"simulate" directx 9.0c as well as download and update the StarForce copy protection.
• Storm Angel (the game crashes in a few seconds after started)
• The Bard's Tale (1985) -- installs, but will not run, as it needs full screen accessibility
• Fahrenheit - The installer starts but keeps saying that installation has been canceled. The game
itself does work if previously installed under XP and run from Vista.
• Sacred(Any Edition)(32-bit) - Installs fine, but when you go to play the game it crashes and
says it cant run in a x64 or server environment. No news on if there will be a fix for it.
• Rise of Nations (the first game) - It's able to install, but not to start. I have the problem every
time with Securom and no original disc can be found (with 3 different original discs), I haven't
found a way to run, no cracks and correct me if I'm wrong.
o Works great on my rig (AMD Athlon X2 4200+, GeForce 7600GT) on Vista 64-bit.
Minor flickering icons in Conquer the World campaign, but doesn't affect gameplay,
and probably an artifact of my video card, not the OS.
• Worms 3D -- Installs, but crashes on or after Sega Screens on launch. Some people can get it to
work by turning off videos.
• Worms Forts - Installs, launches but crashes on main menu screen every time
Graphics/Design
• ACDSee Pro v9.0b55 - NOT compatible

• Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X - Not Compatible
• Corel Draw 8 - Installs fine but Corel Draw won't work

• Snippy 0.41 - Screen grab - NOT compatible : when launching the selection of the screen, the
screen become fully black.
Media Players
• Quicktime Player 7 (all versions, including Pro) -- installs, but prone to crashing, especially
when opening HD content. Apple is believed to be actively working on this software.
• RealNetworks/Listen.com Rhapsody 2.1 Build 0.243 -- Windows automatically blocks this
program from being launched; does not work in compatibility mode. Disabling UAC is the only
way to get the rhapsody.exe executable to launch.
• JetAudio 6.2x -- installs, but can not play any file normally.
• Mplayer -- installs, like JetAudio, can not play any file normally.
Network
• Cisco VPN 4.x or lower - does not work at all for Vista, use 5.x for 32-bit. 64-bit Vista requires
AnyConnect, which doesn't connect with IPSec.

PDA Synchronization
• DataViz Documents To Go 9 and earlier. Program installs and successfully syncs with PDA but
Windows client crashes when opened. DataViz is aware of the problem.
• Microsoft ActiveSync (any version) - ActiveSync is deprecated; use Windows Mobile Device
Center instead. WMDC adult diapers replaces ActiveSync.
• Motorola Q from Verizon Wireless with WMDC does not work, is not supported by Verizon
either.
• TI InterActive! Does not install.

Remote Control
• RealVNC 4.2.8 Enterprise Edition (doesn't accept connections - some say you can circumvent
these problems by not installing it as a service, then configuring it as admin and running user-
mode as admin, which unfortunately means no service versions - also, you have to make
exceptions for vnc in the firewall and windows defender - that said, results are sporadic at best)
Screen Capture
• Planet Game Cam Game Cam (v1.4.0.5) [15]Will not allow the necessary codecs to be
installed.
• Gadwin PrintSCreen
System Applications
• Adobe Acrobat Elements 7.0 (PDF writer) and earlier - Installs but has an error when trying to
print. Adobe claims they will have a fix mid-2007 with version 8.x.
• BestCrypt v7.20.2 - Does not work, update will be available soon
• DriveCrypt Standard v4.40 - Does not work, update will be available soon
• Intel(R) Processor ID Utility - an error message that tells "this program doesn't support Vista" is
received at the beginning of setup. There is a link at the error message to download Bootable
Intel(R) Processor ID Utility, but after entering this link, an error page written "Page Not
Found" appears.
• Intel(R) Thermal Analysis Tool Version 2.05 - Does not work. Pretends to work - loads and
instantly exits in x64.
• Macecraft jv16 PowerTools 2006 v1.5.2.350 (Installs under Vista x64 but crashes when you try
to run it)
• MDFolder v1.1 - Context menu entry does not show up
• Mmm+ v2.02 - Works fine till any menu in any program is clicked. That program crashes.
• System Mechanic 7.0 / PRO 7.0 - before the main setup (after detecting Internet connection), an
error message that tells "7.0 is not supported Vista, 7.1 or later is required" is received. But, SM
7.1 has not been produced yet. -- this error message can be fixed by selecting "Windows XP
Service Pack 2" at compability list of SM's main setup file. but before the main setup starts, an
error message "Failure Code: 323-A. An unexcepted error was encountered while initializing
SM PRO." appears. Iolo's website said once Windows Vista is released to the public then the
products will update to Vista compatible products.
• Cakewalk Kinetic 2 - No support for Windows Vista as of yet. No plans for the future.
• M-Audio FastTrack - M-Audio has been keeping pace with changes to the Windows Operating
System since the release of Windows 95 nearly 12 years ago. We are very excited about the
opportunity to offer continued support to our Windows customers as the Windows Pro Audio
