Sustainable tourism

The projects purpose is to promote a new kind of tourism, based on the concepts of equilibrium and harmony, preserving the balance between visitors and visited. Tourists usually are just moving persons, who travel from place to place, who do not venture into building any relationship with realities around them: a tourists objective is just that to collect beautiful pictures of places, and most of the time he has no interest in a true understanding of what he visits.

A journey is a fundamental experience in the growth of an individual; in fact, by means of a journey, an individual comes face to face with a different and new reality, and the goal of such an exchange should be a personal enrichment, not limited to the individual, but valid also for the people around you. For this reason, it is important to suggest a different kind of tourism, one that is not just stealing an emotion or an experience, but that is finalized to start an exchange between the traveler and the people he meets along his way.

Understanding a different reality, one that is far away from the daily routine, could be a difficult task: in order to make things easier, the best way is getting to know some local people. Indeed, it is tremendously important to have a relationship with the natives; such a relationship can help the traveler change his point of view: from being an external watcher he can look at things from the inside, he can participate and be part of an exchange.

Two clashing cultures are not easy to manage, since just a bit of skepticism or simple fear can draw the two parties away: to avoid these issues, there is the need of a figure that can be the link between two different worlds, someone who is familiar with both realities.

When the traveler and the native meet, a spark ignites and one of the most important objectives of the journey is accomplished: the personal growth through an experience exchange. The traveler becomes a guest, and as such he has the advantage of being a direct witness of the vitality of the culture surrounding him, just by living with the local people.

This project was born to pursue this goal, and to match the dynamics of massive tourism. The area involved in the project is West Africa, in particular Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and

Ghana. These are definitely not popular nations in the international tourism scenario (perhaps the only exception being Ghana); these are nevertheless extremely interesting areas to discover, culture and nature wise. This project is a joint venture between me and my togolese friend Komi Bassah: together weve travelled for over a month around Togo and Burkina and weve had the chance to test an hypothetic safe and satisfying itinerary.

Heres what the project is about: the tourists will spend the entire trip with Komi, exploring these areas; Komi is a native, he knows the territory and he will be your guide; the traveler stays in charge of taking all the decisions: where to go, how long to stop in an area, how to travel and so on. Komi will be with you for the duration of your stay and he will find you places where to sleep: naturally these areas will not be hotels or aseptic accommodations, since the easiest way to keep contact with locals is to live with them, share meals with them and use the same services. Only by living together daily, you will live the real experience of a new reality.

Besides paying his own ticket to come in Africa, the tourist will pay his and Komis fees to move around the countries, the visa fees for all the countries hell visit and a daily charge of 10 euro which will cover food and board in the place where the tourist decided to stay. The tourist will have the possibility to live with the locals and to rely on a trustful person, who knows the territory and can help you in case of trouble. Komi speaks English (which is used in Ghana), French (spoken in every other country), Ewe (Togos most popular tongue) and he also knows enough of other languages spoken in specific regions. He will solve any communication issues. The 10 euro daily charge is more than enough: what exceeds will go to our new association U.V.S.E.D.AFR (Union des Volontaires pour le Soutien des Enfants Dmunis-Afrique), which me and Komi have recently founded. Progetto Turismo Responsabile

Lo scopo del progetto quello di proporre ed incoraggiare una forma di turismo in armonia ed equilibrio con lambiente che verr visitato. Troppe volte il turista solamente un individuo che si sposta da un luogo ad un altro senza interagire con la realt che lo circonda, dove il suo unico scopo quello di collezionare belle immagini dei luoghi visitati, senza capirne realmente la natura.

Il viaggio unesperienza fondamentale nella formazione dellindividuo, poich lo mette a confronto con realt a lui pi o meno estranee: confronto che porter ad un arricchimento personale, ma anche di tutti coloro con cui entrer in contatto. Proprio per questo importante proporre una forma di turismo che non si limiti al furto di emozioni ed esperienze, ma che porti ad un dialogo tra il viaggiatore e le persone che incontra lungo il suo cammino.

Riuscire a comprendere una realt differente da quella in cui si abituati a vivere spesso pu risultare difficile. Uno dei fattori che pu venirci pi in aiuto relazionarsi con chi vive questa realt; nascer dunque una necessit di rapportarsi con la popolazione indigena. Questo rapporto porter il viaggiatore a cambiare il proprio punto di vista, da osservatore esterno ad interno, quindi partecipe e dialogante.

Non sempre facile raggiungere questa vicinanza tanto preziosa quanto fondamentale tra individui che posseggono basi culturali differenti; basta una punta di scetticismo o semplicemente paura da una delle due parti che il dialogo risulta complesso. Perci spesso necessaria una figura che possa mettere in contatto i diversi mondi, qualcuno che a conoscenza di entrambe le realt.

Cos che quando il visitato e il visitatore avranno modo di relazionarsi, uno degli scopi fondamentali del viaggio sar raggiunto, cio quello del mutuo accrescimento attraverso il semplice scambio desperienze. Il viaggiatore, nella sua posizione privilegiata di ospite, potr toccare con mano la vitalit della cultura che lo circonda, appunto vivendo fianco a fianco con la popolazione locale.

Proprio per perseguire questi obiettivi nato il Progetto Turismo Responsabile, che va a contrapporsi con lidea del turismo massificato. Il progetto prende in considerazione larea dellAfrica occidentale degli stati del Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso e Ghana. Queste nazioni sono ancora poco rinomate nel mondo del turismo internazionale (probabilmente fatta eccezione per il Ghana), pur essendo di grande interesse sia culturale che naturalistico. Il progetto nato dalla cooperazione del sottoscritto e del suo caro amico togolese Komi Bassah, che grazie ad un periodo di vagabondaggi (oltre un mese) tra Togo e Burkina stata collaudata questa forma di viaggio.

In pratica: il turista/i passeranno tutto il periodo del loro soggiorno in questarea accompagnati da Komi, il quale, in quanto autoctono e conoscitore del territorio, indosser anche le vesti di guida; sar bens il viaggiatore a prendere qualsiasi decisione, dove andare, quanto fermarsi in una certa zona, con che mezzi muoversi. Komi laccompagner in tutti luoghi decisi col compito di trovare le sedi in cui pernottare: chiaramente si dovranno dimenticare gli alberghi o luoghi di pernottamento asettici, infatti la via pi diretta per entrare in contatto con le persone vivere con loro, condividere i pasti, utilizzare gli stessi servizi igienici. In questo modo si potr condividere una quotidianit che non si pu apprendere se non vivendola.

In soldoni: il turista si dovr far carico delle spese di viaggio, sia quelle per il raggiungimento dellAfrica che per quelle degli spostamenti interni (dovr farsi carico anche di quelle di Komi), dei vari visti per entrare nei diversi stati e della somma di 10 euro al giorno, che andr a coprire le spese di vitto ed alloggio.

In questo modo si vivr con la popolazione locale, si sar accompagnati da una persona fidata che conosce il territorio, che per ogni inconveniente sar presto a risolvere la situazione. Inoltre Komi parla linglese e il francese (a parte il Ghana che anglofono gli altri sono paesi francofoni), lewe (la lingua pi parlata in Togo) e possiede rudimenti delle altre parlate locali delle diverse regioni. Cos non vi saranno preoccupazioni di comunicazione.

I 10 euro giornalieri vanno a superare il reale costo medio della spesa quotidiana per il vitto e alloggio, i soldi in pi andranno nella cassa dellassociazione che Komi ed il sottoscritto stanno dando vita U.V.S.E.D.AFR (Union des Volontaires pour le Soutien des Enfants Dmunis-Afrique), la quale si propone lobiettivo di aiutare gli orfani del Togo, progetto che

dovrebbe vedere la futura (sperando non troppo futura) costruzione di un orfanotrofio. Ma ancora la strada lunga
