- Assistance to the County EMA Staff was provided by:

- Public Relations for County EMA and PEMA provided
For by a employee of the Pennsylvania Department
of Environmental Protection (DEP)
- Approximately 1,100 Identification Badges were issued
For Emergency Works at the Crash Site (this included
the FBI, NTSB, and United Airlines)
- Meals, Refreshments and Support provided on a 24-Hour
Basis by the Red Cross and Salvation Army
- Somerset County Commissioners signed a "Disaster Declaration"
In the First Hours of The Crash
- Difficulty in Sending and Receiving Telephone Calls, both
Landline and Cellular due to the excessive volume of
Telephone use in the Country that morning
- Used the SEVAN Phone to Notify PEMA Harris burg with the
Initial Crash Report
- EOC and Resource Center established near the Crash Site
By 1500 Hrs. on Sept 11, 2001, and remained in place
Through September 25, 2001.
- Resource Center handled approximately 200 Resource Requests
- On-Scene Communications provided by Motorola, which
Provided for a common means for all Agencies to
Communicate. The system provided for Portable
Communications via an on-site 800 MHz Trunked Radio
System
- Daily Weather Info provided by DTN with a on-site Weather
Station at the EOC /Resource Center
- Daily News Up-dates provided by having a DSS Satellite System
On Site at the EOC/Resource Center
- FBI was the Lead Agency and In Charge because the Crash Site
was always considered a Crime Scene
- When the FBI was completed on September 25, 2001, the Crash
Site was turned over to the Wallace Miller, Somerset County
Coroner
- Temporary Morgue was established at the National Guard
Armory in Friedens, across from the Somerset County
Airport
- As of January 8,2002, 44 Bodies have been Identified
Through D & A Testing
- As of January 8, 2002, TOTAL Crash Costs have amounted
To approximately $200,000 to $250,000, not including the
Bill for D & A Testing
- The County has paid all the Bills and is expecting Full
Reimbursement from the FBI and United Airlines
- Crash Recovery Debriefing held on December 4, 2001,
At the Somerset County Court House
- Temporary Memorial has been established near the Crash
Scene at 505 Skyline Road, Stoystown, PA
- As of March 8, 2002, the remains of all the Passengers and
Crew were returned to their families by the Somerset County
Coroner.
- On March 8, 2002, Congressman John P. Murtha introduced
Federal Legislation to obtain money for a permanent Memorial
At the Crash Site with help from the National Park Service.
- Security of the Crash Site is being conducted on a 24/7 basis by
The Somerset County Sheriffs Department through a Federal
Grant of $1,000,000 for a 2-year period. This Federal Grant
Was obtained by the help of Congressman John P. Murtha.
