During 2007-08, total generation by coal plants 488157.46 MUs PLF of 78.75 % and average auxiliary power consumption as 8.17 %
If steps could be taken to reduce this APC to only 8 %, it will help in avoiding fresh capacity addition of a unit of 120 MW size. Thus APC reduction initiatives not only reduce energy consumption but also ensure more revenue because of increase in energy export.
To widen the ambit of energy conservation, a group named Centre for Energy Efficient Technology & Energy Management has been established in Corporate Centre with mandate to oversee and coordinate in totality, different energy saving efforts in the power plants including energy audits.
To comply with Energy Conservation Act 2001, all NTPC power plants have designated Heads of Energy Efficiency & Management Group (EEMG) as Energy Manager.

To control and closely monitor the electrical power consumption of different subsystems of the power plants, existing stations are in the process of installing on-line energy management system. The system is planned to be introduced in all future NTPC power plants.
Merit order operation Shift in maintenance practices OLEMS system will help in monitoring system wise energy consumption
Thrust Areas for Energy Conservation Monitoring of power consumption of major equipments and estimating the gains through overhaul. Generating the trends for the deterioration in the performance in the such equipments.
Thrust Areas for Energy Conservation Better O&M Practices as Minimizing Feed Regulating Station Differential Pressure Stopping CW pumps at low ambient temperature On/Off line compressor washing in Gas stations.
Coating of internals of large water pumps (CW pumps, Ash water pumps etc.) There is energy saving potential of 4 % through polymer coating on pump internals with payback of less than 01 year. This is achieved due to reduction in frictional losses
Compilation of Annual Energy Savings Savings due to operating practices Savings due to equipment maintenance. Savings due to system modification or replacement by efficient equipment Based upon sustainability of the EC measure annual saving is worked out

Knowledge sharing To update the knowledge in the area of existing savings potentials through energy conservation in different fields of power plants, topic specific workshop on Potentials of Energy Savings in different areas of the power plants is organized annually. Participation is encouraged from different equipment designers, manufacturers, academicians and utilities including NTPCs power plants and near by IPPs / State Gen Cos in such workshops.
