Essay on the Problem of Social Communication in India

SAMEER ARTICLES

The environment of Indian social system also reflects a problem of social communication. Social structure of Indian society is based on the factors of illiteracy and backwardness of a large section of population. Linguistic diversity greatly aggravates this problem. This has tended to maintain or even increase the gap between the elites and the masses. This problem is clearly reflected between high and low castes, illiterates and literates, urbanites and realties etc. All these social factors are the determining factors of the environment of Indian social structure, social system and political system. These are mostly problematic factors. Indian political system is a developing democratic system operating within an environment characterized by over population, poverty, underdevelopment, casteism, communalism, regionalism, linguism, terrorism and violence. Despite these constraints Indias socio-political system has been successfully maintaining its stability as a system. It has been engaged in the process of securing development through control over these limitations by making and implementing desired authoritative values as well as through the spreads of literacy, direct political socialization, organized the spread of literacy, direct political socialization, organized economic planning and policies and above all through active involvement of the people in the process of socio economic development. After independence the process of all round socio economic political cultural development has been initiated through several well conceived policies and 5 year plans. The progress has been slow, the problems have been many and restraints have been big, yet the people of India are on the march of social change. The political system has been leading, guiding, directing, coordinating and controlling this march. It is harnessing the resources of the country and channelizing the socio economic cultural factors for ushering India towards the sphere of crisis management and in maintaining progress on the road towards peace, security and prosperity. The need of his hour is to put in more vigorous and determined efforts towards state-building, nation-building, citizen-building and system-building. Social structure of Indian society is, therefore, characterized by religious, regional, linguistic and caste diversities. There are social conflicts among the various institutions of Indian society. Social institutions are closely related to each other. All institutions face the problem of continuously adjusting themselves to a changing society. Changes in the social environment may bring changes in all the institutions. Inflation may have a radial influence on marriage, death, crime and education. Breakdown of economic institutions may have grate effect upon political institutions. Any change in an institution may lead to a change in the other institutions. No institution can avoid affecting other institutions or avoid being affected by others. All the social institutions of India society are affecting the political and cultural institutions. Political system, being a part of social system is working under the influence of social environment. Although there is diversity and conflict in the social structure of Indian society yet these diversities and conflicts have become unique features of Indian social system. They are on the path of adjusting themselves to the social environment keeping in view the unity and integrity of the nation. The contemporary presence of conflict in the society is a sign of increased and increasing awareness. Indians have a firm belief in unity in diversity, toleration and peaceful conflict-resolution. The people of India are fully alive to the problems and strains that affect their society and the political system. They are conscious of their glorious tradition and all-round developments, social, economic, cultural, scientific, industrial and technological are brand to integrate Indians into a strong united and developed nation.

A Visit to the Taj Mahal Essay

NITISH GUPTA ARTICLES

To know history more one should visit historical buildings. It gives us the knowledge of the period and age in which it was built. We know more about the kings who made them, rather than reading in the books. Of all the places none has impressed me so much as the Taj Mahal at Agra. I can easily call it a love poem in the marble. The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, in the living memory of his queen, Mumtaz Mahal. It stands on the right bank of the river Yamuna at Agra. It is built of pure white marble and looks magnificent on a full moon night. Once the Taj Mahal was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Still it is one of the most beautiful buildings of the world. One day with my uncle I wished to see the building. We saw the view of the Taj Mahal from

the train at a distance. It looked grand and impressive. We went on a rickshaw. We saw the gate of the building. It was very high and beautiful. It is made of red stone. It is called Buland Darwaja. We now saw the Taj from there. It was a white building made of white marble. We went by paths made of marble slabs. Between these paths there were cistens and fountains. Fish of all colours leaped about in them. There we saw lawns and trees on both the sides. The Taj is built on a high terrace made of marble. We climbed a few steps and saw the big terrace in the centre of which stands the Taj. There are four high towers at the four corners. Now I saw the beauty of the Taj. I never thought of so. There are verses from Quran written in black mosaic at the three sides of the gate. It is really a great work of art. I was puzzled to see its greatness and glory. Now we went in. There is a broad circular gallery all round the building. I was astonished to see the filigree work and carvings in the marble. In the centre, there were two tombs of Shahjahan and his dear queen, Mumtaz Mahal. But I came to know that they were not the real tombs. The real tombs were downstairs. We went there and found that they were exactly like the other tombs above. Verses from Quran were written on the tomb of the queen. The slab over emperor was bare. I wondered to see the mosaic work of art on all sides. It is said that thousands of the love of Shahjahan for his queen. Crores of rupees were spent. It is really a great work of art and India is proud of it. People come in from all countries to see this wonder of the wonders. Every part of the building is very attractive in a moonlit night. The Jamuna flowing by adds to it charms. The sight of the building has made a deep impression on my mind, I can never forget it. The beauty of the Taj cannot be described in words. The more you look at it, the greater is your astonishment. It is truly A dream in marble. There is nothing in the wo rld comparable to the Taj.

What is Corruption?
NITISH GUPTA ARTICLES

There is common misconception that corruption is only financial that there are no other dimensions to corruption. Truly speaking, financial corruption is a symptom, and not the disease. The real malady is intellectual. This is obvious from the perception among us, if there is corruption, one should try to circumvent, but one should not really deal with corruption. It is one thing to understand the factors of corruption. Having under stood it, it is quite another thing to have the courage to change it. We have to therefore, determine the means for doing so. An ounce of practice is better than tones of theory. Administration is the art of the possible and, in determining the limits of the possible, we may like to remember, that, within the system, IAS officers have prerogatives and powers which they can use for public rather than private advantage. A strategy has to be worked out to understand the effective use of these powers in public interest. Let me now come to the problems o understanding concerning various categories of corruption. We may also remind ourselves about the pointlessness of isolated initiatives here and there. Every one tells a story from ones own life, saying that I have dealt with this issue in such and such manner. But one is not generally willing to adapt a group approach. One has dealt with the so-called system on an individual plane. One has to deal with it systematically, as an organised group.

Ideological Corruption:
There are deep ideological reasons for the suggestion that corruption cannot be dealt with by autonomous action within the Indian polity. Paul Hacker, the Vedantic scholar has suggested that the logos seed in the Indian or Non-western soil cannot bear flower! And fruit, until it is transplanted to the soil which is fertilised by the judaeo Christian stream of thought. This comes out of a very old Oriental perception, which has a strong presence even today as a post-colonial theory.

Moral Corruption:
There is then this strong feeling that if one is not actively involved in corruption, one is not corrupt. Passive acquiescence is not corruption. And, enthusiastic facilitation, out of a complete misunderstanding of historical processes, is not corruption. If one is encouraging the destruction of bio-cultural habitats, total destruction of community economic systems, total homogenisation of our culture, then also, it is not corruption.

Cultural Corruption:
There are then, several sophistries involved in abdicating our positions to cultural corruption. Dancing to 'Dhak Dhaks, Ole Ole', Mast Mast is not corruption. Being a surrogate community, tied by umbilical cord to the western civilization, is not corruption. It is not corruption to only admire Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer. It is not corruption to gloat on a borrowed culture, to go gaga over Nintendo and such other Japanese games" It is not corruption. It is only fun. It is entertainment. There is a deep malaise in the sense that culture has been reduced in our perception from a composite culture of life to a culture of bread and circus. The cultures of ecology, water management, therapeutics, forest conservation are surrounded by mythology, song, dance, ritual, and management systems. These cultures have been supplanted by the lowest common denominators of western song

and dance. Most of the people do not know western jazz, western classical music and western blues. All they know are the gyrations of hips directed by a few film dance impresarios from Bombay.

Financial Corruption:
Take now the financial dimensions of corruption. One has to understand that what we are discussing in terms of retreat of the State, disinvestment, privatization, financial intra-mediation, liberalization, etc. are all happening anyway, because of the western teleology of history, which we have accepted without modification, and without taking precautions, before allowing it to engulf us, without sensitizing officers to the tremendous variety of composite cultural articulations in the country, which are directly linked with the rhythm of seasons and of life. The latest brand of corruption, it has been aptly pointed out, is to act as pimps in the striptease operations of disinvestment. To understand the financial processes, to regulate them and to keep away from the attendant temptations and not become slaves to themthis is what we should be able to derive from our training.

Green House Effect - Essay

NITISH GUPTA ARTICLES

Greenhouse Effect is a term for the role the atmosphere plays in helping warm the earths surface. The atmosphere is largely transparent to incoming short-wave (or ultraviolet) solar radiation, which is absorbed by the earths surface. The earth receives energy from the sun, which warms the earths surface. As this energy passes through the atmosphere, a certain percentage gets scattered. Some part of this energy is reflected back into the atmosphere from the land and ocean surface. The rest (70%) actually remains behind to heat the earth. In order to establish a balance, therefore, the earth must radiate some energy back into the atmosphere. As the earth is much cooler than the sun, it does not emit energy as visible light. It emits through infrared or thermal radiation. However, certain gases in the atmosphere form a sort of blanket around the earth and absorb some of this energy emitted back into the atmosphere. Without this blanket effect, the earth would be around 30 o C colder than it normally is. These gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, along with water vapour, comprise less than one per cent of the atmosphere. They are called greenhouse gases as the working principle is same as that which occurs in a greenhouse. Just as the glass of the greenhouse prevents the radiation of excess energy, this gas blanket absorbs some of the energy emitted by the earth and ke eps temperature levels intact. This effect was first recognized by a French scientist, Jean-Baptiste Fourier, who pointed out the similarly in what happens in the atmosphere and in a greenhouse. Hence he terms the greenhouse effect. This gas blanket has been in place ever since the creation of the earth. Since the industrial revolution human activities have been releasing more and more of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This leads to the blanket becoming thicker and upsets gases are called sources and those that remove them are known as sinks. A balance between sources and sinks maintains the levels of these greenhouse gases. Humankind upsets this balance when new sources that interfere with the natural sinks are introduced. Carbon dioxide is released when we burn such fuels as coal, oil and natural gas. And, when we destroy forests, the carbon stored in the trees escapes as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Increasing agricultural activities, changes in land-use patterns, and other sources lead to rising levels of methane and nitrous oxide. Industrial processes also release artificial and new greenhouse gases like CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), while automobile exhaust fumes lead to ozone generation. The resulting enhanced greenhouse effect is more commonly referred to as global warming or climate change. Global warming is a result of the increase of thickness of the greenhouse gas layer or increase in concentration of GHGs that are released into the atmosphere through human activity. Increased greenhouse gas concentrations may be resulting in more heat being trapped in the atmosphere and increasing global temperatures emitted by the cars we drive, the furnaces we use to heat our homes, and the industries that produce oil and gas, create electricity, and develop products for the worlds marketplace. These gree nhouse gases are completely human-caused. They harm stratospheric ozone, and so are not as directly responsible for global warming as carbon dioxide is. The question of reducing their presence in the stratosphere is being taken care of in another global convention, the Montreal Protocol. These gases are particularly effective in absorbing long wave radiation from the earths surface and preventing heat from escaping. Although the views and opinions of people across the world vary on issues relating to the cause of global warming and its possible impacts, there is a common understanding that it is a cause for major global concern and must be addressed immediately.

Are Mobile Phones A Heath Hazard? Essay

NITISH GUPTA ARTICLES

Mobile phones have brought revolution in human life. Before the invention of mobile phones very few people would have imagined that in future they would have instrument like a mobile phone. But this great invention has brought with itself many health hazards. The problem is that mobile phones are still too new to know the long-term effects on human. Mobile phones are operational on radio frequency, which ranges from 100MHz to 300GHz. But so do other appliances. Why do mobiles specially considered hazardous? It took time to ascertain whether the radio frequency emissions from mobiles cause health effect or not. People who are using mobiles while driving vehicles is the only risk that can be proven to be dangerous and risks life. Technology devises another way to be dangerous and risks life. Technology devices another way to get around this problem by using hands-free sets. But now the question is to do those hands-free sets rally solve the problem? Researchers now are looking at if the hands-free

sets dont cause other problems. A report from the magazine claims that hands-free kits raised levels of radiation to the head from mobile phones by up to three and a half times. The consumer association immediately stressed that it had done no research into this whether this radiation could cause any kind of damage to the brain. That just proves that whenever there has been research a report is released to prove that research wrong. Probably is done not to create any chaos. Brain tumors are also associated with the use of mobile phones; they say this because there was found to be more tumours of the same kind amongst mobile phone users. Mobiles cause memory loss, radiation sickness. Mobiles can alter your sleep pattern, according to the researchers from the University of Zurich, mobile phones enhances brain activity during our sleep. A strange result of the use of mobile phones is that mobile phones can release the poisonous mercury from fillings causing brain damage, scientist say this is due to the electrical fields given off by mobile phones can activate the mercury, giving off a gas. The fumes reach the nervous system causing conditions from depression, asthma to Alzheimers disease and multiple sclerosis. Some studies also proposed links between radio frequency radiation and lymphoma, microwaves and memory loss, mobile phone use and a rare type of brain cancer, mobile phone radiation and DNA destruction, and mobile phone use and damaged scalp nerves. The World Health Organisation has asked for more and more research, but all the time and money spent results in the same answer over and over again. When the press publishes such reports, that these studies came up without result the scientists will report that their data suggest it is unlikely mobile phones cause cancer, perhaps even highly unlikely. They will admit that they cannot rule out the ill effects of mobile phone use. This may satisfy the public, until a counter report is published. If these studies can identify a mechanism that causes the brain tumours, we have a real public health threat on our hands and the authorities are put into action. It is certain that one cannot enjoy technology any more without its harmful side effects, causing a slow death. If mobile phones are questioned now, when will it be stopped? Will microwaves, electric blankets, or televisions be next in the line? Is technology taking enough and necessary precautions to improve the mobile phones? To try and make the radiation that is sent out as harmless as possible, in the mean time before the technological level is high enough to do so, experts have made reports to reduce the amount of radiation. They recommend things like: reduction of time spent using the mobile phone. Factors, which can effect how people perceive how risky new technology is that no one really knows what the long-term effects are, and until that is certain people will still, be looking for new possibilities. If no immediate link is put between all the risks and the real effect of mobile phones on humans, then using mobile is absolutely fine.
