We are surrounded by technology daily. We have learned to depend on technology for a wide variety of things. Depending on technology is not the best choice we have made. They say that the use of technology can help us advance in the science field. Even though they say technology can help us, it can also hurt us. The story Tigershark! is a prime example on how technology can hurt us if we depend on it. In this story, Engineering Test Pilot David Barnes is constantly finding out the technical hitches of flying planes. Barnes had completed three different flights in one day and he was getting ready to complete a fourth and final run. During his final run, Barnes had to complete several different maneuvers; two of these moves would take Barnes up to nine gs for several seconds. He had a special technology suit that was made to allow his body to hold up the pressure of the flight by pushing the blood from his lower body to his upper body, keeping his head and chest supplied with blood. During Barnes last maneuver, the suit failed to do so. Since the suit failed, the blood was not getting to his upper body. Barnes soon lost his vision due to the constricting blood vessels in his eyes. Before long, he lost his memory due to the lack of blood flow in his brain. Barnes crashed into a snow-covered hill and died on impact. The technology in the suit was not able to keep up with the fast pace technology of the plane. We should not depend on technology during flight because it cannot replace human functions and the results of depending on technology during flight can be more devastating than we think.

Easton, Thomas A. Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Science, Technology, and Society. N.p.: McGraw Hill, 2012. Print. Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Science, Technology, and Society by Thomas A. Easton brings up issues with technology. The book shows the relationship between technology and society. It gives annotated listings of different websites that explain the different views on technology and how they affect society. I will be using this source to help me see different views on technology and society and their relationships with one another. This book will help me grasp how we are becoming too dependent on technology and how that might not be a good thing.

Koenig, David. "Wingin It American Airlines Copes with Massive Technological Failure." The Mariette Daily Journal. Associated Press Writer, 17 Apr. 2013. Web. 5 Nov. 2013. This article tells a specific story about technology failures with American Airlines. A software problem occurred and messed up computer systems that were needed to book flights, track baggage, and load and fuel the planes. Even though this technology failure was not critical, it still affected the people immensely. It caused many flights to be delayed and also many cancellations of flights. I will be using this source as another reason on why we should not put our full trust into technology.

Launius, Roger D. Innovation and the Development of Flight. Texas A&M University Press, 1999. ebook collection (EBSCOhost). Web. 31 October 2013.

Reese 3 The ebook Innovation and the Development of Flight by Roger D. Launius is a book that gives multiple stories about flight successes and failures. This book covers topics from the failure of the Langley aerodrome in 1903 to the progress of the airliner. It covers the technical topics of flight such as the functioning of the engine and the different instruments used during flight. This book is an excellent source when doing research on the relationship between technology and flight. I will be using this book as a source for more examples of technology failure during flight.

"Modern Marvels: Jet Engines." Films On Demand. Films Media Group, 1999. Web. 3 Nov. 2013. This source shows different flights that have happened in history. Not all of the flights have had positive outcomes. One story in particular I will be using in my essay from this source is the story about the F-80 Shooting Star flight. During this flight, they were experiencing with the very first ejection seat. The technology malfunctioned and the pilot, Bob Hoover, was sucked out of the plane and nearly died on Earths floor. Even though this occurrence was not as critical as David Barnes incident, it still was frightening. I will be using this source as another example on how we should not depend on technology during flight.

Noland, David. "10 Plane Crashes That Changed Aviation." Popular Mechanics. Hearst Communication, n.d. Web. 5 Nov. 2013. This source gives many more examples on failures during flight. I will be using this website to give more examples on how technology fails during flight, and why we should not depend on it. The one specific story I will be using from this source is the one on the Airlines

Reese 4 Flight 173. This story is about a plane that had failure with the landing gear and resulted in the death of ten people. This story will be used as another strong example on the failures of technology.
