MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH

I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving with your loved ones. I, for one, have a lot to be thankful for and continue to count my blessings! We are all looking forward to our Holiday programs at the GL High School on Monday and Tuesday. We hope to see you there! I was recently reading an article titled Getting Kids to Read: The 5 Key Habits of Lifelong Readers. In the article, the author reviews a book by Donalyn Miller, Reading in the Wild. In her book, Miller states that wild readers !" #$#%&'($)(%*$)(+),$'#") -" ./&&$..0/112).$103.$1$&(),$'#%45) *'($,%'1") 6" .7',$)8++9.)'4#),$'#%45):%(7) +(7$,),$'#$,.") ;" 7'<$),$'#%45)=1'4.") >" .7+:)=,$0$,$4&$.)0+,)5$4,$.?)) '/(7+,.?)'4#)(+=%&.") As a parent and your childs first teacher, you can help your child become a lifelong reader (and learner!) by encouraging and modeling the above behaviors. Assist your child in choosing appropriate, easy-enough reading material; talk about books or articles you have read recently; and, have plans for you and your child to read at a particular time, whether you are reading together or simply reading on your own at a designated time. Whatever you can do to support your childs continued reading will inevitably assist in helping them to become lifelong readers. Please join us for our PTO meeting next Thursday, 12/12, at 6:30 p.m. in our library. As always, if you have any questions, or would like to discuss any concerns, please contact me.

FAREWELL TO MRS. OLIVETO

We are happy and sad at the same time to announce that Mrs. Kathy Oliveto has accepted an Administrative Assistant position at Central Office. Although we are happy for her, as she greatly deserves this opportunity, it will be difficult to replace such a great employee and friend. Central Office has asked Mrs. Oliveto to start next week so there was no time for many to say their goodbyes. If you would like to send Kathy a message, you can email her at olivetok@glcomets.net. We all wish her well on her new adventure!!

INFLUENZA
There have been several cases of Influenza in our district, the following information may be helpful in preventing the flu, in addition you may seek additional information at www.flu.gov and www.cdc.gov There are steps you can take in your daily life to help protect you from getting the flu.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

Here are some guidelines to answer the questions: "Should I keep my child home from school?" Please keep your child home if he or she: Has a fever of 100 or higher before taking medication to reduce the fever. Has been vomiting or having persistent diarrhea in the last 24 hours. Has excessive tiredness or lack of appetite. Has an intense headache, sore throat, body aches, chills or an earache. Has a persistent, productive cough, which has kept them up at night. "Does my child have the flu?" The flu can be serious. If your child is at high risk for flu complications please contact your physician at the first sign of flu symptoms. Individuals at risk include those who are pregnant, have asthma or diabetes, have compromised immune systems, or have neuromuscular diseases. Symptoms of flu typically come on suddenly and can include: Fever, Chills, Headache, Body Aches, Sore Throat, Nausea, Vomiting, Dry Cough "When should I send my child back to school?" Colds and flu can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose other children unnecessarily to illness. Please keep your child at home until: His/her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. He/she has not had vomiting or diarrhea during the last 24 hours. If given antibiotics, he/she has taken the antibiotics for at least 24 hours. His/her appetite and energy level have returned to normal.

Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy food. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Everyone 6 months of age or older should get the flu vaccine which is available locally.
