INTRODUCTION
Airport is a location where aircraft such as fixed-wing aircraft,
helicopters, and blimps take off and land. Aircraft may be stored or
maintained at an airport. An airport consists of at least one surface such

as a runway for a plane to take off and land, a helipad, or water for
takeoffs and landings, and often includes buildings such as control
towers, hangars and terminal buildings.
Jammu Airport (IATA: IXJ) also known as Satwari Airport is an airport in
Jammu (J&K). It is situated 14 kms from International boundary (Indo-Pak).
It is located 8 km from the city of Jammu. The Jammu Domestic Airport
has only 1 terminal. The airlines operating at the airport are Air India, Jet
Airways, Spice jet, Go Air, Kingfisher, and Indigo.
Other airports in its vicinity are Pathankot Airport at 120 km, Srinagar
Airport at 350 km, Ludhiana Airport at 265 km, and Amritsar Airport at
250 km. This airport handles only domestic passenger traffic. No
international flights land or take off from here. Nearest international
airport to Satwari airport is Amritsar Airport and after that is Delhi Airport.

HOW TO REACH JAMMU AIRPORT

Distance between Jammu city and airport is very less and can be covered
easily in city buses or taxis. Autirickshaws are also a cheap and
comfortable choice.
Travellers must reach the domestic airport at least 2 hours before flight
timings to board the flight in time as formalities at the airport may take
time.

JAMMU AIRPORT AIDS

1) Tourism :
People love to travel. There are numerous reasons behind travelling
such as Business, Visiting friends and family, Curiosity, Natural
attraction, Historical places, Recreation. However, two factor that
influence travelling The first is Internal push factor for
example Pilgrimage, Education, Health Care. The second is
External pull factor Nature, Sports, Recreation and many more.
Whatsoever the reason of travelling people need transportation for
movement, the next question arise which mode of transportation?.
The answer is affordable, time saving, convenient and safety. So,
air transportation is the one meet most all of the above.

In Jammu, the main centre of attraction is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji,
Bawe Wali Mata temple, Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort, Shiv khodi
Temple and many more. Annually, lakhs and lakhs of prople visit
Jammu and Jammu airport help to aid tourism in the state.

2) ECONOMIC CONDITION

Aviation plays an essential role in economic progress of a nation as

it is viewed as a necessary link not only for international voyage
and trade but also for providing connectivity to different parts of
the country. Also Aviation provides the only worldwide
transportation network, which makes it essential for global
business. The Jammu airport also helps the state to increase its
business dealings. Many multinational companies like Berger Paints
Ltd. have their setups at Industrial areas in Bari Brahmana and
Samba in Jammu (J&K). So aviation is the only fastest and efficient
means of transport because in business Time is Money.

3) STANDARD OF LIVING

Aviation promotes global business and tourism. Air transpiration

alleviates poverty and helps to improve living standards of the
society. Air transport improves quality of life by broadening
peoples leisure and cultural experiences. In Jammu, the Raghunath
Bazaar merchants are dependent upon the tourists for their
business and tourists also like this bazaar because they can buy
handlooms, dry fruits, and many more.

4) Jammu airport contributes to sustainable development not only by

facilitating tourism and trade; it generates economic growth,
provides jobs, increase revenues from taxes as well as facilitates
the delivery of emergency humanitarian aid relief and swift delivery
of medical supplies anywhere on the earth.

NEED FOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

In the modern world, travelling is more centred to the annual

holidays and can be fairly well predicted. The demand in
international and even national transport infrastructures implies a
very large number of people who wants to move in an efficient, fast
and inexpensive manner. It requires heavy investments and
complex organization. Well-organized terminals and intelligently
planned schedules are essential in promoting effective
transportation facilities for tourists, notably since the industry is
growing at a fast rate. In short we can say that everyone needs
direct flight to their desired destination rather than switching
flights.

EXPANSION OF JAMMU AIRPORT

Jammu airport is small and currently hosts only 11 flights daily and
140 flights weekly. Private companies are pressuring AAI to expand
and develop the infrastructure of Satwari Airport so that more
flights can operate from here to meet the increasing demands of
growing passenger traffic.
On March 5, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, during his visit to
Jammu, had announced Rs 70 crore for expansion and up gradation
of Jammu Airport to increase its landing surface and passengerholding capacity from 200 to 700.
A comprehensive plan had been formulated for the up gradation
and expansion of Jammu Airport to provide all infrastructural
facilities to the passengers.
The expansion and up gradation of the airport is likely to complete
within one year so that more than two big aircraft could land and
takeoff simultaneously from Jammu, which is considered a strategic
move for the development of the Jammu.
The task force of the ministry had approved a plan of converting
the Jammu airport into an international airport. The proposal had
been sent to the Union Cabinet. The civil aviation development had
been ignored in North India. The Union Minister of State for Civil
Aviation is trying to bring the Jammu airports on the international
aviation map.
There is a plan of building airports which would meet the
international standard at Bangalore, Hyderabad and Goa. Since
Jammu, including the Ladakh region, has special attraction for
tourists, the up gradation of these airports in the state would be
taken in hand on a priority basis. The expansion would ensure that
instead of just three hundred passengers now more and more
passengers should have a comfortable stay in lounge. Several NRIs
have already approached to provide this facility so that they could
visit tourist resorts and the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine without
wasting much time.
Representatives from various departments gave a detailed account
of the preparedness made for their respective part of works and
assured cooperation with the main executing agencies.
Detailed discussions are being held on various matters regarding
the expansion of the Airport and the shifting of utilities.

Under this up gradation plan of Jammu airport, the runway would be

extended by another 1,300 feet towards the direction of Tawi River.
. Longer runway will allow big aircrafts like the Airbus-320 and the
Boeing 737-800 to land here. Also separate parking space for
incoming and outgoing passengers would be created. This can be
done by extending the existing one and constructing a new parking
lot in the vicinity. Form the security point of view, a gate would be
erected on the front side of the airport.

HURDLES IN JAMMU AIRPORT EXPANSION

Hurdles have once again cropped up in the much-needed expansion

of Jammu Airport with alternate land to be handed over to Army
turning out to be a portion of Bahu Games Reserve in the Forest
Department records thus requiring clearance from the Supreme
Court's Empowered Committee for conversion of its use.
In view of the prevailing situation, the Government has been left
with no other option than to make a request to the Union Ministry of
Defence for relocation of Army utilities to some other land till the
clearance to the mutually agreed alternate land from the Apex
Court so that expansion process could not be held hostage by the
latest technicality.
Sources told that as soon as Army expressed its readiness in the
month of November 2009 after hectic persuasion to accept 146
kanals of land at Sunjwan as an alternate to land under its
occupation near Jammu Airport, the State-level Apex Committee
began process to convert the use of land as area was actually
under Forest Department.
During the process, it came to fore that this chunk of land actually
falls in the Bahu Games Reserve since the Maharaja's time and for
changing land use, clearance from the Supreme Court's Empowered
Committee is required, sources said, adding due to this technicality,
hurdles have once again cropped up in the much-needed expansion
of Jammu Airport particularly at a time when everything was
seemingly going on in a positive direction after several years.

Though the process has been initiated to seek clearance from Apex
Court's Empowered Committee yet this is a time-consuming
exercise and without handing over alternate land for shifting
utilities, Army is not going to vacate the land under its occupation
near the airport which is vital for runway's expansion. The local
Army authorities are ready to relocate utilities particularly Military
Farm to any other place but require directions from top brass.
State Government has made a request to the Defence Ministry to
get Army's utilities shifted from the land near the airport to any
other place so that expansion project could be started with the
assurance that soon after the clearance from Apex Court's
Empowered Committee, the alternate land at Sunjwan will be
handed over to Army.
It is pertinent to mention here that with the availability of land, the
Airport Authority of India (AAI) will be able to increase the length of
the runway from present 6700 feet to 9000 feet and this will result
into landing of wide aircrafts with full load. At present, the aircrafts
are landing with restricted passenger load due to 'insufficient'
length of the runway.

SUPREME COURT CLEARS JAMMU AIRPORT

EXPANSION PROJECT

The much-awaited and much-delayed Jammu Airport expansion

successfully crossed final hurdle when the Supreme Courtappointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) gave its clearance
to change of use on seven hectares of Wildlife department land at
Sunjwan area, in the outskirts of Jammu city.
The CEC members visited the Sunjwan area and inspected the land
identified by the state government to shift the Army base adjoining
the Airport at Satwari to Sunjwan.
The Committee gave its final word on the issue thereby clearing
the final hurdle for the much-awaited expansion of Jammu Airport.
Elated over the decision, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote on
micro-blogging networking site Twitter: Pleased to hear that the
Central Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court has cleared
environment issues regarding Jammu airport expansion.

SECURITY AT JAMMU AIRPORT

One of the most hyper-sensitive airports in the Northern India, the
Jammu Airport has been brought under three-tier security ring in
view of the increasing threat perception from across the border.
The airport is hardly at an aerial distance of about six kms from the
Pakistan border and is considered as more vulnerable than Srinagar
Airport which also falls in the category of hyper-sensitive. In view of
the increasing Pak trained Fidayeens attacks on the vital
installations, security forces, crowded public places and the
occurrence of a few massacres recently, the Air Port Authorities of
India have further beefed up the security of all the sensitive and
hyper-sensitive airports in the country.
Special attention has been given towards Jammu and Srinagar
which were brought under three-tier security system. Keeping in
view the increasing threat, elaborate security arrangements have
been made with the deployment of sufficient number of well trained
personnel from Border Security Force to constitute third security
ring around already highly fortified Jammu Airport. All the newly
inducted security personnel are commando trained and now are the
members of Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs). These are specially
trained for the task to perform at the airport as a part of strong
anti-hijacking teams. Earlier there was two-tier security system
prevailing at this airport and Central Reserve Police Force and
Jammu & Kashmir Police men were mainly looking after the security
arrangements here. Two companies of CRPF besides sufficient
number of JKP men are deployed and SP Anti-Hijacking Mr Amjad
Parvez Mirza is the over-all in charge of the security at the Jammu
Airport.

Recent problem faced by passengers

Firstly, they have recently changed the departure gate to the other
end, but there is no sign board which indicates the same.
This has created a lot of trouble to the tourists visiting Jammu and
Kashmir.
Secondly, at the arrival gate of Jammu Airport there is no
notification of the flights arriving or departing, as the common
people are not allowed to enter the Jammu airport, how the person
will get to know when is the flight is arriving.
Recently I waited for around 1.5 hrs outside the Jammu Airport to
receive my uncle as there was no notification which conveys that
the flight is delayed.
Thirdly, no proper parking place for the cars. The place is so
crowded at times that we have to park our car 1-2 kms away from
the Jammu Airport exit and as no trolleys are allowed outside the
gate, it is very difficult to carry all the baggages and walk.

PROBLEMS FACED BY US
1. Too much questioning by the airport authority.
2. All of the passengers were not interested in answering the
questions.
3. No entry for personal vehicle.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF

JAMMU AIRPORT
1) Increase in the no. of flights
2) 24x7 working of the airport.
3) Increase in the number of the terminals
4) Parking facility
5) Opening ATM services in the airport
6) Proper medical facilities in the airport.
7) Role of government should be increased towards the
development of the airport.

PROBLEMS FACED BY THE PASSENGERS & SUGGESTIONS

TO THESE PROBLEMS.

1. SUCH A LONG PROCESS OF SECRUITY CHECKING IN JAMMU AIRPORT

They take a lot of time in the security checking approximately an

hour. Sometimes I feel that we may have missed are flight

- Vijay
Sharma
Suggestions there should use more sophisticated machines so
that they can decrease the time for the security checking.

2. THE FLIGHTS NEVER DEPART AT THEIR SCHEDULED TIME

There are no schedule charts at the airport

-

Yogesh Lohiya

Suggestion- proper schedule charts should be posted in local

newspapers.

3. NO PARKING FACILITY IN AND OUTSIDE THE AIRPORT

When I went to receive my father at the airport, I had to park my

car 1 km away from the airport
-

Anup Parkash

Suggestion- multi level parking should be built near the airport.

4. 24x7 FLIGHT FACILITIES

Sometimes I have to attend the meetings outside the state.

provide the information yatris.

8. COOPERATION OF THE STAFF

They never listened to my grievances and did not helped me to

solve my problem
-

Lekha Aggarwal

Suggestion- there are frequent transfers in the airport like the

director has been transferred recently and new S.P. has been
appointed. It becomes much difficult to complaint about the matter.

9. TOO MUCH FLUCTIONS IN THE RATES OF TICKETS.

We cant book tickets in advance as there are much chances of

cancelling of flights especially in J&K. there are also many variations
in passengers traffic especially in yatra times or in summer
vacations. Sometimes the tickets are not available. Or there is so
much increase in rates of tickets
-

J.S Nagger

Suggestions-Chopper facilities should be increased during those

periods from jammu to katra e.g.- recently for Mata Machal Yatra
the chopper facilities was provided.

ABOUT THE JAMMU AIRPORT

Fuelling procedure 200 litre of 1barrel avg. of 15 barrels (.air

turbine fuel) is sent through helicopter to various areas like katra &
others.
Director of airport is an acting director for only few days or a month
due to transfer of previous director.
Director- Rakesh kumar
HR- Shalini

Like to issue entry passes to members

Police - J&K police & CRPF
Services provided - Internal shopping facilities like Kashmir
handloom & handicraft where we can purchase shawls, carpets.
Security gates - 4 gates
Recently the rates of the tickets were much expensive because of
the heavy traffic of passengers visiting Mata Machal Yatra.
In airport there are 3 bay area where the aeroplanes can be landed
or take off
Now there is plan to construct 4 more bays. Total 7 bays.
Hangar area (where aircrafts are parked) to be constructed for
better parking f acilities
Jammu Airport daily hosts 13 to 14 flights
Each crafts has 350(approx) no. of seats
Total passengers visit pr day is approx 14*350=4900
We can take it as 4500(approx)
Per year the passengers visit are above 50000.
