Ion Exchange

Packed Bed Ion Exchange

When do you need it?

Packed Bed Units replace conventional Co-Current, Countercurrent Cation or Anion Units where theres a need to reduce chemical use and wastewater. They are also used where Co-Current water quality is inadequate but the high quality of a Mixed Bed isnt required. Combined with a Polishing Cation Unit, they can often produce Mixed Bed quality water. Packed Bed Units, like CounterCurrent Units, can be used as working exchangers or polishing exchangers. Since they have minimum freeboard and operate at higher ux rates than conventional Ion Exchangers, they take up less oor space and require less headroom for a given ow rate.

What is it?
Amberpack Packed Bed Ion Exchangers are Counter Current Units. They can be provided with a single resin compartment or dual compartments. When dual compartments are used, the Unit is called a Sandwich Amberpack. Unlike conventional Ion Exchangers (which have freeboard to allow backwashing), Packed Bed Units have minimum freeboard and dont backwash as part of the normal regeneration cycle. An atmospheric resin maintenance tank is used for backwashing resins once or twice a year and as a means of storing resin during maintenance inspection of vessels. Single Compartment Units use strong acid cation and strong base anion resins. Two Compartment Units use weak and strong resins, which improves chemical efciency. The type of resin used and conguration of the vessel are site-specic. They are based on water chemistry, as well as nancial and environmental constraints.

How does it work?

Service water and regeneration ow in opposite directions, removing contaminants from inuent water. The normal, preferred conguration is with service water owing up and regenerant owing down. This guarantees the bed is compacted (not uidized) during regeneration and ensures good contact between regenerant and resin. In the service cycle, water enters the unit through inlet piping and ows through the inlet retaining plate strainers, which evenly distribute the ow across the resin. The resin removes ionic contaminants. Treated water passes through the outlet retaining plate strainers to outlet piping. In the regeneration cycle, the regenerant chemical enters the vessels top and ows down through the resin. Flow-restricting check valves in the upper strainer plate distribute the chemical evenly across the resin bed. Spent chemical leaves the vessel through the chemical outlet valve. Units can be loaded with resin in one of two congurations: single resin or sandwich resin. The single resin can be a softener, strong acid cation, or strong base anion. A sandwich bed consists of one of the following combinations: weak and strong cation resins, weak and strong anion resins, or cation and anion resins. (When the resin bed is very deep, two compartments with the same resin may be used to reduce the pressure drop through the individual beds). Either gel or macroreticular resin can be selected. Resin beads of uniform particle size are used to improve resin kinetics. Amberpack Packed Bed Ion Exchangers do not use or require inert resin.

For hydrocloric acid service. Easier to modify piping in the eld and more robust. Absence of plastic spacers and instrument taps increases durability and reliability. Compact, simple and durable construction reduces failure potential. Visual indication of valve position. Higher safety for chemical lines. Provides additional protection against injection of chemical into a unit that is not in regeneration. Provides positive feedback on valve positions to the control center. Prevents resin loss in the unlikely event of an underdrain failure. Wedgewire construction provides longer life and structural integrity of retention medium. Simplied operator maintenance. Water-tight and corrosion resistant. Prevents water damage and damage from most chemicals. Doesnt require controlled air pressure. Simplies installation. Simplies maintenance. Permits local manual valve operation. Avoids possibility of electrical interference. Gauges can be replaced without system shut-down. Easy access to water samples. Monitors system to ensure appropriate product ow, unit capacity and water quality.

Valves

Buttery valves for reliable, automatic on/off control. One-piece body and a one-piece shaft, with mechanical position indicators. Regenerant valves are diaphragm type with spring-to-close actuators. Option: Regenerant isolation valves and regenerant block and bleed valves. Option: Valve proximity or microswitch type switches.

Resin Trap

Option: Stainless steel wedgewire resin trap. Removeable design lets operator clean strainer without piping disassembly.

Solenoid / Junction Box

NEMA 4X enclosure with manifold-mounted solenoids and common terminal strip. Single air connection for air lter and pressure regulator. Manifold mounted solenoids, individually replaceable, with manual overrides. Wiring in separate AC and DC junction boxes.

Instruments

Unique pressure gauge and water sampling assembly on inlet and outlet of each vessel. Standard instrumentation: 1. Inlet ow indicating transmitter. 2. Outlet conductivity monitor (Anion units only). 3. Inlet and Outlet pressure gauges on each unit. Differential pressure switch across each strainer plate. Option: Sodium analyzers, silica analyzers, and pH meters.

Alarm warns of excessive pressure across resin bed. Improves control and monitoring of performance.
