Brochure
Description:
This brochure contains a price list for single prints, a brief description of myself, and what kind of work that I do. With this brochure I will be able to connect with future clients and establish a trustworthy relationship with them.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Design a brochure for a company that we made up or a personal business. The purpose of this brochure is to be able to show to potential employer the services that one offers in a business aspect.

Process:
I spent a lot of time looking up ideas on Pintrest so that I could find some inspiration for this project. I feel like I have been struggling lately with coming up with ideas for these past few weeks. While sitting in the library, the idea came to me to change the logo... again. I have changed it like five times already! I wanted something upbeat, fresh, and that motivated me. I love the bright colors on the cover page. I wanted my logo to compliment its joyful mood, so I changed it to Skyward Photography. The brochure I made is a short compilation of some of my work and what I have to offer as a photographer.

Montage
Description:
In 2010 I took a trip to Oregon with my father to tour the University of Oregon because of my interest in their journalism program. Along with seeing the campus, we visited the coastline to see some lighthouses. The one that has been blended in using a layer mask is the Yaquina Lighthouse. The background of this image was taken in Newport as the morning began. Our assignment was to blend (merge) two images together using Adobe Photoshop, but more specifically, layer masks to create on montage. We also needed to include text in the image, and I thought it would be relevant to include the state of Oregons motto to personalize the image more.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop CS6

Objectives:
Learn how to properly manage Photoshop layers while using filter and blending them together using mask.

Process:
I began by reviewing some of the pictures that I had taken in the past. My first choice was to select a few engagement pictures that I had taken. I didnt like how the engagement pictures blended together, so I decided to continue searching. The brilliant colors and contrast in the sunrise shining over the Newport Bridge called my attention. As you can see I used a layer mask to fade in the lighthouse, giving it a gradual blend so that it doesnt appear awkwardly on the image. After I finished blending the lighthouse into the background, I applied a Canvas Filter to give the image a more textured feel. The most difficult part of this assignment was to decide where to put the lighthouse and how big to make it.

Logos
Description:
We were given the assignment to come up with three logo idea for a company, whether it be made up, real, or our own brand. I decided to expound on making my own personal brand more distinguishable.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator

Objectives:
Create a wide range of logos that will represent a personal image or company using the wide range of tools in Adobe Illustrator.

Process:
Years ago while working in with Steve Mackley, owner of Mackley Portraiture in Logan, UT, I practiced signing my name on a Wacom tablet. It took me about 50 tries before I was satisfied with the results. The name T.Bach has stuck with me ever since I left high school. I dreaded signing my entire name, Tyler Rickenbach because of its length, so to shorten it, I combined the two together to form, T.Bach. In illustrator I was able to paint over my original signature and tweak it and group the individual letters together so that they looked continuous. Nothing is more simple to understand that a signature, and thats why I decided to use it as my logo. It represents who I am, my work, and my passion for photography.

Event Ad
Description:
This is an event ad that I made using Microsoft Word, the logo from Cocoa Bean in Rexburg from Google Images and the August 2013 National Geographic cover page. The purpose of this assignment was to scan an image at the correct pixel dimensions and only use Microsoft Word due to a tight budget in the company to create an event advertisement for a charitable contribution.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, Acrobat Pro

Objectives:
Design a full-bleed event advertisement from a scanned image using the only program available in a tight-budget situation, Microsoft Word.

Process:
I scanned in an image from National Geographic and then used the background editing tool to remove the extra background. Afterwards I started drawing shapes to for the full bleed using rectangles and lines running across the advertisement. I wanted to draw in the viewers attention by tilting the cupcake upward, but after doing so I realized that it was taking my eye off the page. To avoid this problem, I add the cross lines to separate the text and keep the viewers eye from wandering off the page. On top of the page there I noticed that my eye kept drifting towards the empty space, so I decided it would behoove me to add the sponsors logo and fill the vacant spot. I feel like this contributed to the event ad significantly to give it a more personalized look.

Imaging
Description:
With the help of my roommate, I was able to capture the awing power of fire by lighting a match against a black backdrop.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Lightroom 4.0, Adobe Photoshop CS6, Canon 7D w/Tokina 17-35mm f/4.

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills to capture an image and crop and size it to a 6x6 with the resolution at 150. Process the image in Adobe Photoshop by adjusting the brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.

Process:
I had to do several things to set up this shot, the first was positing the black background (fabric). I had to hold it up while I steadied my Canon 7D on a Manfrotto 190s Tripod. The challenge I encountered was being able to manually focus my Tokina 17-35mm lens because AF wasnt doing the job fast enough before the flame burnt out. My roommate lit the match while I held the background with one hand and focused/fired the lens with the other. 300 RAW images later, I imported them into Adobe Lightroom and began to sort the good from the bad. After processing many of the images, I picked this one and began to edit in Adobe Photoshop. I applied a lighting effect filter so that I could focus more attention on the flame versus the hand below. I also desaturated the hand because it appeared to be a deep orange because of the flame. As soon as I finished processing the image I made a new document in Photoshop and with the help of the rulers, marked off the document as directed by our instructor. Afterwards I placed the 6x6 cropped image within the margins.

Web Page
Description:
After having changed my logo completely, I was finally able to settle with something that was pleasing to me and original. Our assignment consisted of learning how to use HTML and then link it with CSS in TextWrangler in order to create a web page aesthetically appealing as if we were going to put it on the Internet to display to a potential employer or customer.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

Objectives:
Design a web page using HTML and CSS to display a logo that we created during the semester that would reflect the services our company offers.

Process:
I decided that the best way to capture the essence of creating an original image was to create it first on paper then transfer the design to Adobe Illustrator. While digging through some of my mothers older camera gear, I found some 35mm slides and some already exposed negatives of my younger siblings and I. The idea came to me as I played with the two objects in my hand, why not combine the two? My original idea was to somehow incorporate my style of photography, which is landscape and portraiture, by combining elements in nature and people, but couldnt seem to find elements that united the two. By combining the film and 35mm slides I feel like I was able to capture my creative style of thinking yet be able to tell the viewer exactly what I do in a single image.

Flier
Description:
Given the information to include in the flier, we were asked to design an appealing template, make good use of one of many images, include the business logo, and select a font-type that compliments one another.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Apply design principles such as alignment and contrast and use the appropriate typography to create a basic flier in Adobe InDesign.

Process:
To start off, I decided to start by making a few simple sketches to get my mind thinking about how to create a unique and professional looking flier. I found that my paper sketches were not very effective so I decided to jump straight into InDesign to begin creating a rough draft. Ideas came to mind and creativity started to flow as I changed fonts on the body copy and placed the image. In class I was able to get feedback by my peers as we talked amongst ourselves about each others projects. Thanks to my classmates and the comments they made, I saw the valuable information that they had to offer and applied unto it. As a result of what I have learned from our peer review and textbook, I was able to design the flier you see posted.

Letterhead
Description:
I decided to keep my design simple and use the Photographer (English Essay) so that it would be similar to that of my signature on the back of the card. The reason I chose to use a paper airplane is because I liked the idea moving forward, elevation, reaching higher. I also want the viewer to flip to the backside so that they can get the rest of my information.

Program(s)/Tools:

Objectives:
While using the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign, design a letterhead that incorporates a logo (watermark) that was created during the semester.

Process:
This is probably the most difficult assignment that I have done. It was difficult for me to come up with an idea. I realized very quickly that graphic design is not one of my strengths. I knew from the beginning that I was going to use my signature as a background. Last night I watched the Disney short film, Paper Man, and fell in love with the idea of paper airplanes. I thought it would be cool to incorporate into my business card somehow. It took me a while to come up with the design on how to make it work in a photography setting. I tried to be creative and step out of my comfort zone, which was very hard for this assignment!
